Thanksgiving Plans?
|
Okay, since we seem to have a thread for every upcoming holiday here on the boards, I'm going to keep up the tradition.
Thanksgiving is around the corner folks! HUZZAH!!! So, what are your plans for the holiday? Have any entertaining stories of Thansgivings past?
Well, nothing special planned for me...I'm going to spend all day eating and sleeping. As for entertaining stories...for the past couple of years I've tried to cook something or at least help. And every time, the food I tried to come near spontaneously combusted... I always end up banished to my room until all the food is cooked. Needless to say, I am a menace in the kitchen...

My parents are taking the brood to southern California to be with my mentally fading grandmother. I sadly have midterms and papers due all throughout the week of Thanksgiving which is just more proof that the school I attend is run by maniacs. So I'll be working and studying, although I've been invited to friend's places in the area, so I suppose I'll see.
I do know that my grandmother has invited me and a male [cough] friend to her place to learn how to play traditional mah jhongg and bluff and lie and eat until we waddle away eventually. Lucky us.

THANKSGIVING IS THE ONE HOLIDAY THAT I LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That day is the only day I can gorge on food without feeling bad. My plans for Thanksgiving are to help my mom cook and then eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and...............well, you get the picture. After that, I'm probably going to just lay in one spot for about two hours because I'm too full to even move. Entertaining stories? Hm..........one time I helped my mom make chitlins and last year we had the turkey in the fridge for about 2 months( I didn't even want to see what was in there) and when me and my sister took it out, it was covered with mold and looked like a monster. It stunk bad, too. I had to clean it..........
But yeah, it was awesome. My dad always leads the family in prayer at every Thanksgiving and sits at the head of the table. We thank God for everything and then we eat and eat and eat some more.
*sigh* I love that holiday.

Upcoming? Thanksgiving was exactly one month ago! But I suppose I'll talk about what my family and I did anyways for you American folk. </shot>
Twice a year my dads side of the family gets together for dinner at my Aunt and Uncle's ginormous house. Once for Thanksgiving in October and again near Christmas. There is always plenty of homemade recipes and turkey going around along with wine and egg nog but this year was a little different.
My Aunt and Uncle bought a new house (seeing as all 8 of their kids have moved out) and it is very nice but a lot smaller. It was weird eating thanksgiving dinner somewhere else but it was the same family so fun times were still had. And this year I got to drink and be merry! I was thankful for that.

I'm going to try and visit my family, but I don't know if it's going to happen or not. I hope so since I love catching up with everyone and helping my mom make all sorts of goodies for the holiday is fun. We have a tradition of picking a few new recipes to try out each year. I've already been looking at stuff for this year since I'll end up trying something even if I can't get home.

Thanksgiving is the best holiday ever, haters move to the left.
But here's what I plan to do:
1) eat
2) sleep
3) study for finals
Repeat.

Eat, eat, and eat some more.
And when I'm full, I'll probably slump into a chair and watch some TV.
Seriously though, we always just stay at home, cook dinner, and eat over at grandma's house. I'm hoping some of our errant relatives might drop by for a quick visit at least.

Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is the time of year that everyone in my family decides to have a family reunion. Even more so, my family is filled with religious, racist, and very judgmental people... Every year, my mom gets crap for marrying a white man. (Instead of another indian) I get crap for being so open about my lack of religion. (and my refusal to say prayer) And my brother gets crap for having two children (one out of wedlock) and being divorced. They're really going to go all out on him this year when they find out that he's got a third kid coming. (Also, out of wedlock)
It always ends in tears, someone leaving, curse words being thrown, perfectly good food being thrown, or an actual fist fight. Yes, my family is the definition of dysfunctional. Last year, my dad decided not to go because of all the verbal abuse. It was sad but kinda funny because all the older members were so excited. They thought my mom was getting divorced.
Also, every year, all 80+ members of the family go around and say what they're thankful for. My response is always, "I'm glad there hasn't been a fight yet," which usually inspires one. I guess I shouldn't say that, but it's the only thing I'm truly thankful for when I walk into that environment...
I really don't want to go. Neither does my mom, but coming from such a tribal family, all of the older members take GREAT offense if you just don't show. They may even decide to show up at our house to see why we didn't go. So, as good as the food may be, I just really really hate Thanksgiving.
I'm worried that my food may be poisoned one year.

Its okay, like many people you just ate yourself into a coma. This is all a dream, and its really december. Sorry you had to find out like this!
That being said, that's exactally what I plan on doing. However since I've been engaged I've found that I end up eating more than most people. With both of our parents living within 30 miles of one another, I'll be pregaming at my mother's. Stopping by my father's for some homemade peanutbutter pie (perks of divorced parents), and finally topping it off at her parents. So basically I keep enough leftovers in my fridge to survive a nuclear holocaust.
As far as funny stories, I'm sure I could think of some when I was little. But as far as the past couple years? None that I can recall, I'm normally past out on the couch by the end of the last dinner.

Weirdos and your late Thanksgiving...
Anyyyways. This year was crazy because I was moving out during Thanksgiving, so we didn't do much special. It was my Mom and I on the road, so there wasn't any big gathering at home like usual.
Regular years though, it would be held at my Granny's and most of my Dad's side of the family would come down for the day. We ate a lot and always finished the meal off with pie. Pumpkin generally, but since I don't like pumpkin my Gran started making me my own coconut cream pie =P I dunno if I'll be going home for the next few Thanksgivings due to financial reasons, but hopefully I'll get that tradition back on track once I actually have money!

My plans are the same really, spending time with friends and family. The only difference this year is it looks my parents are going to travel to where my older brother lives up in Idaho. And though I think it would be fun, I'd rather stay here, even if that means making my own food this year.
