Favorite Album Artwork

Some bands manage to have some darn good artwork on their covers or in their little insert booklet. What are your favorite examples of album artwork? Note that pictures aren't a requirement, I just thought it would be cool.

In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3

Band: Coheed And Cambria

Why? The cover doesn't do it much justice, but this CD has some astounding artwork. Most of it is very grainy brown and has a deserted feel. Buildings lean in on deserted cracking streets and all of Earth seems, well, silent. (if you've played Gears of War, a lot of it is in that vein of destroyed beauty)

Good Apollo I'm Burning Star Four IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness

(note: this is the comic cover, but I couldn't find any album art)

Band: Coheed And Cambria

Why? This CD takes images from the graphic novel which corresponds with the disk and puts them on the pages. The artwork is simply amazing, and Christopher Shy is unbelievably skilled. The images are creepy at times and synch well with the dark overtones of the songs. It truly comes to life in the graphic novel version which makes me disappointed that they switched illustrators for the future releases.

The artwork is done by the guitarist, and the entire package is awesome, the cover doesn't do the whole package enough justice. Click for a giant version.

Boston - Boston (Sorry for the bad image quality.)

This album cover, like the album itself, is nearly perfect in every way. It's iconic, aesthetically pleasing, able to be taken in at a quick glance, and yet also conveys the feeling and (unstated) auditory premise of the album absolutely to a tee. This is, plainly enough, "This is what the city of Boston would sound like if it suddenly found itself rocketing through space." The cover reflects this, and Boston's sound in general, with magnificent precision, down to the level of visual detail (or, almost, lack thereof) present.

A lot more intelligence went into it than you'd realize at first glance.

Frances The Mute

Band: The Mars Volta

Why? The only thing more strange and disturbing than the lyrics of The Mars Volta is the artwork. A man crawling down a massive treetrunk, men driving with red bags over their head, a mannequin torso beside a mirror reflecting a different image, and the woman with her mouth sewn together. All of these and more make the chilling atmosphere of FTM even more... chilling. It's freaky, and the photography is top-knotch. Plus they actually included all the lyrics in all their freakish glory.

Agreed 100%. Incredible album, great artwork. Nothing fancy, just simple and well done, accomplishing a lot with a little. The Artwork on Don't Look Back was pretty great aswell.

Now, as for my nomination...

Fully Completely

Band: The Tragically Hip

Just the coolest art I've ever seen (And one hell of an album to boot!). It was made in quite possibly the coolest way possible; the Hip photocopied different parts of their bodies and then made into an awesome collage out of them. It looks really cool and crazy, although it's not really that related to the album itself... Still looks great though.

artist- Mars Volta
album- Amputechture

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000GPI1BO.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V41379603_.jpg

sorry, had trouble figuring out how to paste the picture up. Took me a while to figure out they are smuggling a giant baby. The art style of this album reminds me of the work of Diego Rivera, if he actually didn't do it. The album itself is pretty nice, but you kind of have to have a thing for long tracks. Viscera Eyes is probably my favorite rock song of all time now.

That picture is very special, my friend. Head to the Mars Volta website and go to the forums -- you can learn a hell of a lot of background on the amputated mutant, the smuggling itself, and the wrappings around the mutant. It's very interesting. I also nominate this album.

Hybrid Theory

Band: Linkin Park

Why? Most people just hear this name and say, oh, they suck. And the hater would look at the artwork and say, man that's so gay. different music for different people, but beside that point. The artwork for this album is amazing. Very simple, a soldier with angel wings equipped to him. the hybrid of Soldier/angel. The hybrid of Rap/Rock. The artwork trully brings out the meaning of this album.

Band: Jesu

Why?: I think it's a very serene and artistic image. A bit gloomy perhaps, but it's not as garish or egotistical as some of the Album artwork I see. It's message, if it has one, could be complex but the image they use is very poignantly simple if that is the case. The photography involved is very skillful.

to Lionheart: I love that album's art as well. I like the tech-versions in Reanimation more, though. I actually had that cover as a birthday cake once.

to Deathknight: Gunna see them in March

Blood Mountain

Band: Mastodon

Why? While I do not yet possess this album (2 more days!) I can safely say that I absolutely love this cover art! It's got a healthy dose of 'WTF?!' Mixed with enough 'holy cow!' (in both the literal sense and as a term of expression) and more than a little 'sweet!' What this appears to be is a 3-headed moose standing on 2 legs holding some sort of weirdness (the crystal skull? Who knows?!) and all of it's set on this freakishly orange backdrop (ORANGE!) over red (RED!).

Artist: Bloc Party
Album: Silent Alarm Remixed

Why: Cos it's a mirror image of the orginal Silent Alarm, but it's in black and white, whereas the orginal cover is gray and white. it just gives it this dark, brooding, deserted and earthy feel, exactly what you get when you listen to this remix record.

Those are dragonfly/insect wings, not angel wings. The title is only about the hybrid of nu metal/hip hop, not soldier/angel.

That's the one album for those of you who aren't familiar with the Beatles, it's got all their number 1 hits. I love how the number 1 isn't just a solid colour. It's very patched and grungy but bright. I like it.

I just don't think you can get cooler than the Master of Puppets art. :/

Yeah, it's a Christian band. Yeah, their music is kind of lame. But the cover looks pretty sweet, lol.
