Anime Crushes

Actually I find the idea of anime crushes rather interesting since I've yet to have a crush on a real boy let alone an anime one. ^_~ However I do have characters that I adore, but it's more like what others have said, an admiration of the creation of a character that can make you laugh, look cute and even remind you of people you know. And thinking some of them are hot are in my opinion no different than admiring other forms of art. If it's beautifully done, you like it.

But in no way do I want or feel any desire to attempt to know them (since they aren't real) or even the creator for that matter. So I like them but have no feelings beyond that. Personally I think people can get so caught up in how reading a good manga or watching a show with a character that they feel connected to means you must like them on a level that isn't possible. What it really does in my opinion is it touches your feelings and emotions but that's really more of an indication that the person behind the story or animation is skilled at what they do.
yeah it starts really getting creepy when they crush on the character so much they start looking at yaoi and yuri etc.
Actually I think that's a faulty assumption. I've peeked at both yaoi and yuri material and that was before I even got into anime. Where I live that sort of stuff is considered very, very bad so it was only natural that I was curious about it. Mind you I'm talking about the more soft material and not hard core, though I can't think of the name for it right now. But in the end, I'm sure lots of people are into both and have never had a crush on an anime character.

Looking at yaoi and yuri isn't really connected with crushes. It's like porn. Except... in cartoon form.

Yeah i know that but alot of kids get in to that because they have crushes you dont have to be a genious to know some people get in to that because they have a crush on them OR they just like porn OR they were told about it by there friends
I been on myotaku and some girls have crushes on the character and they talk about looking at yuri of that character

So... by your way of reasoning, if I were to get a crush on a character in some TV sitcom (Lost, Heroes, any of those shows I don't watch). That would be the reason that I would go and look at porn?

You don't have to have a crush on an anime character to look at Yaoi/Yuri/Hentai. All you need is to be curious enough to look at it. As for your other reasons... thats basically the same way people watch porn. It doesn't deal with having a crush on a character. Its like Lunox said, All Hentai/Yaoi/Yuri is, is porn only animated.

If you think MyOtaku is bad you should go to Japan and see the fanbase that it has there.

Personally I think it's alright to have a crush on a fictional, animated character. I, however, don't have those kinds of feelings for a character of any show, but I can see how one could. I mean, the animators didn't make unlikeable, mean, ugly, and down right stupid, characters that everyone would hate, did they? No. They instead, usually try to make some characters that would appeal to the watchers, whether it be by looks or personality. I think it's kinda mean to say it's bad or weird for others to have a crush on a fictional character.

Posting my views on it, not in reference specifically to anything anyone has said (since i have not read every post thoroughly yet).

It boggles me honestly as to how people can question why people can either have a crush on an anime character or find one attractive. When characters are created, they are given mannerisms, personalities, physical anatomy, basically everything a real person possesses. When you like someone in real life, you are ideally drawn more so to their personality and attitudes, and of course in addition to how attractive they are. It's essentially the same thing, the only difference being the potential of being with an anime character is zero where as the potential to be with someone in real life whom you like for the same aspects are significantly higher, though not garaunteed obviously.

As a writer myself, I give my characters an incredible amount of depth and make sure they can appeal just as easily as real people can. Putting myself in a position where I could have the opportunity to bring those characters to life in the form of something that does not involve real life actors, I would find it highly understandable that my viewers would form some kind of connection with my characters because they have everything a real life person does minus only tangible form in the real world as we know it. If you are capable of being infatuated, liking, or even loving someone for their personality and emotional appeal then you can very easily find yourself "crushing" on an anime character. If you like a girl who cooks and dances, then it's highly likely you'll like an anime girl who cooks and dances. If you like a guy with long hair and works out, then chances are you'll like an anime guy with long hair and works out. It's the trait that is being viewed as attractive, which is extremely reasonable.

Putting into logical perspective, it explains why I find it strange that people still wonder how it's possible. You may have preferences and it may be to completely disregard anime characters completely, but to think it's impossible to create a connection of some sort with the characters of someone's favorite story or anime is quite unreasonable.

Obviously real girls (and guys, for those of you out there who like that sort of thing :P) have a more realistic appeal, and I myself prefer them for the most part. But I do live in an area where personality wise, i've seen more girls in anime who appeal to me in that category then real girls. Anyone else who lives in NYC would understand :p. But seriously, it isn't like we have a choice between the two since we can only be with a real person, but liking an anime characters is hardly dissimilar from liking a character from a book, or a movie. In the case of the movie, sure the people are real...but are your chances of being with Angelina Jolie or Ben Affleck any better then your chances with an anime character? Odds are, it won't happen.

In reference to anyone wondering how someone could find an anime character attractive, the explanation for that is simple. In real life it's extremely unlikely to find a perfect looking girl because we as humans are nothing of the sort. The mind and the imagination however is fully capable of creating an idea of perfection from a particular point of view. The mind conveys this idea to the hands given the right talent and the character finds physical form by way of a drawing and then it is brought to life. So in other words, a drawing can easily depict someone's ideal vision of an extremely attractive person because it's the person who is creating him/her, where as in real life we choose from what we see, completely out of our control as it pertains to the group selection.

I personally have quite a liking for a few myself (not neccesarily all because of attraction, but liking them as a characters or because they have features that I like in females) and it doesn't change my ability to be attracted to and like real life girls, so therefore it isn't doing any harm to my judgement or preferences. I know many girls in real life, been with quite a few, will continue to be, am turned on much more by real girls, and I like it that way. Though it may be specifically a writer thing to be able to form connections with non-existing characters. Even if it is, I still find it to be a very logical viewpoint.

I'll keep this post short. I think that a lot of people are mistaking an emotion more like "a longing for reality" for actual feelings of love for fictional characters. This can be a hazy subject since those types of feelings always seem to be, but I think this is the case.

p.s. True Angel I assure you that I'm no robot. Despite what you may think, I am a human being and thus have had feelings of love in my lifetime. >.<

I think the consensus is basically that ... the characters have qualities that we ourselves either long to posess or long for someone we love (or would like to love) to posess. I'm not talking crazy hair, or schwicko-colored eyes or anything (though I gotta say, Hitsugaya of Bleach has some DAMN pretty eyes. That's just an amazing color in general), I mean personality traits. I know a lot of girls (and some guys) who really like Vash the Stampede -- and it's because of the carefree qualities he has. The outlook on life, I guess.

I know a lot of girls will likely lean towards the stronger characters (read: more ruthless) because of some lack of safeness or protection in their life (or a boyfriend mayhaps that couldn't buck at a mosquito and win), and this mental process that tells them "OH HAY, LOOK, BIG STRONG PRETTY BOY. Y HALO THAR", or something to that effect.

I wouldn't say I've ever had a 'crush', per se, but I've definitely admired some characters for what they were.
I have a crushes on someoen I actually can have instead of looking retarded while drooling over a poster of an anime girl.
Isn't it kind of rude to stomp all over what someone's interests may be, no matter how opposing their views are compared to yours? I mean, calling it "retarded" is pretty mean. I mean, I don't think you'd enjoy it if, per se, you liked; Let's say brunettes with blue eyes. You liked them and saw a whole bunch of girls (or guys) who looked like that, but everyone thought you were stupid and called you dumb for even liking them. I'm sure you wouldn't like that.

This is essentially the same thing, but I just put it onto a different level to help explain my thoughts. I, myself, don't have crushes on animated characters, but I know people do and I'm fine with that. So I stick up for them. Besides, if it's not to your liking, don't care.

I had one a few years ago on Yami Yugi- the big purple eyes and brave, kind demeanor (I love a man who sticks up for his friends) are what did it for me. I realized after awhile that I wasn't getting anything out of it and began relationships with "real" men instead.

Sure, they can break your heart, but it's better than pining away for something that will never come to fruition. :animeswea

1.You can imagine them as real. If you have a quite vivid imagination, anything can happen.
2.They might not look like your possible partner, but you can copy personalities[urgh..not Setto Kaibas...]

Honestly, I admit that I'm having a crush on anime characters... lots and lots of them. Maybe, because the ideal type of the person I like is reflected in that anime character. But, it's not forever that I'm going to have a crush on several anime characters...
I just noticed this (because I'm so perceptive and all), but a lot of people on the 'boards have crushes on anime characters. I have never had one on an anime character and I'm incredibly interested in knowing why someone would find a 2-dimensional image of someone they've never met (and know doesn't exist) to be an object of desire. Its just odd to me.

Have you ever had a crush on an anime character and why?
I have at one time... i used to have a crush on i think it was naruto not really sure it was a long long time ago... so yeah. Oh by the way im WickedDreams my real names heather... im kinda new to both sites so yeah...

Have you ever had a crush on an anime character and why?
Well I've never had a crush on an anime character. But I can imagine why people would. Not only do they probably have characteristics that they admire, but they are safe. At least in the sense that they will never meet them and have their view of how they really are shattered. There's no danger of meeting them and finding out that they are a jerk instead of as cool as you thought they were. You can keep having the fantasy of what they are. Though one would hope they eventually outgrow the phase of crushing on anime characters.

It seems silly to me since they aren't real and as others have mentioned I think it's more of a liking the author's skill type of deal than a true crush. You like how they created a character that seems so real that emotionally on some level you feel connected to them.
Every time I read this sentence, i want to throw up. Every time someone brings up this topic it's always the same thing.

Anywho, as the type of fan who looks at hentai, anime doujin, talks about characters in a disturbing fashion, hands out with people who are too old to be liking these characters (thank god I'm still only 15) and obsesses over characters -- you can guess what my answer to this question.

It's not like I'm in love with these characters or something - I just think they are hot. You might say 'oh fake girls are not hot', but that's just your thing. It's not like I don't find any real girls attractive or something, and even if I didn't, it's still a matter of preference.

It's like if you pointed to a woman with huge breasts and said 'she's hot'. If I disagree, it's just cuz I don't like big boobs (and I don't, usually.) the same goes for anime characters. I think some of them are hot, and that's my preference, maybe not yours. It just so happens that more anime girls fall into my personal range of preference than real girls. Oh well.
I agree. Its not sad or weird to think that an anime character is attractive. In fact it is human nature. Since the time of cave men we have been drawing pictures of things that excite us and visually stimulate us.

Also humans are the only creatures on this plant that have the ability to use their imagination. So its not that hard for us to find a well drawn every attractive anime character hott/desirable.

P.S
Read Genshiken it explains in better detail.

Well, since I do not know what "love" or "crush" means, but I shall take the word "crush" as just an attraction to someone or something
So, if you use "crush" with the definition of an attraction of someone or something, then it would mean that the fan girl/boy have an attraction to the character in the anime and/or manga. The attractions may include the characters personality and appearance. A fan looks at the character as a living person, therefore they look at their personality and appearance
I believe that the reason why some perfer to be "with" a character than a living person because you know the character, you know their personality for in anime you know their thoughts, and everything, but in real life you don't what what the real person is thinking or what they planning to do.
At least thats how I see it
Its simply more or less an attraction, true I find it hard to believe that someone would actually give up all relationship (boyfriend and girlfriend) with real people, for in the end you may shall never be with that certain character
It is unhealthy to be that overly obsessed with the character no matter what excuse
There is nothing sad or weird that a person may like a character, but to actually give up real boyfriend/girlfriends and "be with" the character is weird ((at least to me))

Honestly i don't mind if anyone have crushes on anime characters because im one of them (BUT that doesn't mean i don't pay attention to human beings). I would sleep with my stuffed anime characters. A football freak would possibly sleep with a pillow made off football. it's not a crime or what. It's your damn thing...your ball.

The tv is turned on and suddenly 'H' anime pic/scene appears, 90% of the viewers (im refering to those who are into manganimes) would probably switch to the documentary channels............DUH!!

And if it's not mentally healthy, i really can't agree. As far as im breathing, i've never turned into a schizophrenia or dimentia after that. And there's not even a word in dictionaries which have meanings for 'not mentally healthy due to obsess/having crush with anime characters'.If there was, it might've come from the damn planet called Pluto.

We're human beings and we satisfy our desires in many ways, OUR OWN WAYS. If we're taught to do other people's way, then lets just be clones. This is our life (plus one and only) and we paint it with our own hands.

I'm not really sure if people have crushes on characters in anime but it's quite possible. I just find myself liking one character more than another. My friends act like they have crushes on all sorts of anime characters, but I think it's more of a favorite character. I guess some characters are so close to perfect, people fall in love with their personality. Book characters can be that way too... it's all about the personality really. I know that some think characters from anime is hot, and why not? If they have some sort of attributes that you think is great... then think what you must!

I think deep down there's always an anime charcter you really admire. For me the jbst stands for Jakotsu,Bankotsu,Shikamaru, & Temari. Those aren't all the char. I admire but I wanted to keep my name simple. I think the artraction isn't by how they look but by their personalitys. You know must people want to be like the char. they admire. Ummm... but that's just my opinion.
