I've been going through my "I'm going to listen to All Shall Perish non-stop while I'm drivin my car around" phase. haha
They're building up so much for that CD, ughhhh, I can't wait.
ha

Lucky! Haha, Summer Slaughter won't be in San Diego for another month and a half or so. I'm excited for it, but I'll wait.

Zen, how many people are you going with?

On a side-note, is anyone going to Warped Tour?
There are actually a few bands I really like who are gonna be playing, so I'm seriously considering attending the San Diego date.

See, I just got over my "Bring Me The Horizon" and "Born of Osiris" phase myself. I JUST got back into listening to hip hop and dance music thanks to Michael Jackson and Zapp and Roger (America's Best Dance Crew = win).

Sucks for you. I'm going on the 30th with about 6 or 7 people I think. Those guys from Tales of the Black Freighter are playing and I might, MIGHT get to meet some people. Maybe.

I plan on going to Warped Tour once I figure out the dates for my area. I hear tell that Bring Me The Horizon are gonna be playing, and if that is so, then the ticket is worth that alone. What all bands are supposed to be rolling, do you know?

Anyways, later this week I'm going to go to FYE and hopefully, I'll be able to buy Iconoclast by Heaven Shall Burn. It was on sale for 10 bucks, TEN BUCKS! So yeah, can't wait for that.

EDIT: All Shall Perish's The Price of Existance has one of my most favorite album covers.

So anyways, yesterday was Summer Slaughter, and I got face-f***ed by the brutality of that concert. Born of Osiris DESTROYED the house, literally. During "Bow Down" we had a little sing-along that nearly killed the entire first row, which immediately turned into me breaking people down in the throw down circle. It was beautiful.

During the Faceless set, right as they started, an avalanche (literally) of bodies smashed against the stage like a tidal wave. I ended up crowd surfing twice and shaking hands with the vocalist.

Despised Icon smashed as well, and I got one of their shirts. I also ended up smashing some people in the pit then as well. That and Tales of the Black Freighter.

White Chapel was crazy amazing, and that was my first pit of the day also. Goodness, was it a great time.

Unfortunately, we left before Black Dahlia due to the venue not allowing people to leave and return, and charging two dollars cash for simple water (I had to spend all my cash getting my friend in, leaving only debit card, which those pricks did not accept).

Still, it was an amazing experience, and by leaving, I probably avoided my death by dehydration/crushing.

Amazing.

My god, American Hardcore gets sooo annoying after a while, well not really. But Maximum the Hormone, a Japanese Hardcore band, is still awesome. I can't understand the lyrics, but I don't care they're a pretty talented group. Billy in Despair is a very noticable song because it's the end song in Death Note, awesome tunage too.

They're pretty cool. They've done like... three? Three songs for Death Note, I believe. All on the soundtrack, fosho. Anywho. I'd like to bring up... Norma Jean and Zao of course. The past few nights I've been listening to The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here and O' God The Aftermath. Good job. Norma Jean, and Zao of course sound different, but they both have some of the same qualities. For one thing, they knew they wanted to make different metalcore albums, that didn't sound the same as the last chug chug fest. Respect, definitely. Both bands have a raw sound, and you can tell they didn't load their songs up with a bunch of computer mutilation. Very nice. Also, they released DVDs for the making of the CDs. Won my heart over. lol. If you want to hear something different, listen to Zao's stuff off of The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here. But I believe O' God The Aftermath can't be beaten. Except by Heavy Heavy Low Low's Everything's Watched, Everyone's Watching. HHLL ftw. Other similar acts would be Everytime I Die, HORSE the Band, Underoath, Poison the Well, Fear Before the March of Flames, and my personal favorite... can anyone guess?

I haven't been in this thread in a while, haha.
Awful shame, to be honest.

Anywayyy, I'm gonna get some things off my chest.

Elysia's new full-length CD "Lion Of Judas" was a complete FAIL in my opinion.
They completely did away with their sound which I think helped popularize Deathcore and slow, heavy-a** breakdowns. They kicked out 3 of the 5 original band members, got 3 new ones, and got a new sound. They're more thrash then anything now. They got a bit more technical, but that still doesn't take away from the awful direction in sound they took. Zak, the vocalist, doesn't sound good AT ALL anymore. He has no high scream anymoe, and hardly uses any growls. He's using yells now, kind of like The Warriors.
It's just all bad.
I miss old Elysia.
Listen to their debut full-length, "Masochist."
That CD is just fantastic, but the new one makes me go ew.
=/

Anyone listen to any Knights Of The Abyss new songs off of their new full-length "Shades" yet?
Because THAT is fantastic.

Icky.

False metal.

False hardcore.

Icky.

I respect those few bands mentioned here that respect their roots. But bands like With Blood Comes Cleansing and Bring Me the Horizon...icky.

Me?

I've hit a recent phase with doom and stoner metal that I can't seem to shake. Hence my username--weedeater. You should check them out, they're awesome.

Is With Blood Comes Cleansing really getting that big? That's strange to me. I've known them for years. Remove the Veil, anyone? What about Chasing Victory or I Am Terrified? A Plea For Purging? They're all from around my area and I've either known them all personally or at least worked with them.

WBCC is personally very disapointing to me, because Jeremy Sims writes most of their music and he has much better musical taste/ability than he shows.

Respect, my friend.
Deathcore is far from both of those anyway, which would be my favorite genre/sub-genre/whatever.
FAR from it, haha.

I'm personally not that big a fan of WBCC.
If you ask me, their originality level is severely lacking.
His vocals get annoying after a bit too.
In my opinion, inhale vocals sound really bad after about one song. Maybe two, if you're lucky, haha.

I can tell right now, you're from the southern part of the US, because all the bands you just named are really big in Arkansas. I don't listen to any of them, though. False metal and false hardcore. You mean. Metalcore? lol. It's the latest thing. If you want to have a conversation with anyone about any kind of music, down here, it has to be about metalcore, or deathcore. Or of course. Chiodos, Blessthefall, or Alesana. Sigh. Good old southern part of the US. Weee.

Strike the Choir just recorded with Tyler Orr and Cody Bonnette from As Cities Burn. I'm very proud of the guys, and I'd like all of you to check out the new stuff they recorded soon. Whenever they put it up, that is. My bandmate (from I Was The Red Wine of 1955) D.J (STC's lights guy) also went over to Tennessee with them, to meet the dudes. I'm a little envious. As Cities Burn is one of my favorites. Definitely.

Everyone. Go out and buy Here At The End of All Things by The Number 12 Looks Like You. Best Live CD/DVD you're gonna get all year. I'm very pleased with my purchase of it. The sound is amazing. The lights are amazing. The band.. however... Is more than amazing.

Of COURSE I've listened to Whitechapel! I actually heard about them BEFORE I got into my full deathcore fandom. My favorite song is definetly "Ear to Ear", and I'm also a fan of "Vicer Excisor". Brutal lyrics and guitar work. They're a great band. They were the first band to play on my leg of Slaughter Tour and I was instantly throwing down. Southern Deathcore at its finest.

On a related note (i.e. Slaughter Tour UK), has anyone heard "The Cleansing" by Suicide Silence? I've been a fan of theirs for a bit now, but I haven't heard many people mention them here. I love their work, especially the song "Bludgeoned To Death" and "Unanswered". Their lyrics usually dwell in between nihilistic and hateful rage, and it is delivered viciously by their vocalist Mitch. Not to mention their brutal breakdowns and guitar work. It's great.

While listening to "Bludgeoned To Death", I pretty much feel like punting a cedar block through someone's chest. Brutal stuff.

Hah, you named songs from "The Somatic Defilement." I'm talking about "This Is Exile."
OHMYGAWD.
And here I thought the songs from "The Somatic Defilement" were brutal, heavy, and awesome. Seriously, please listen to anything from "This Is Exile," haha.
FANTASTIC stuff.

And Suicide Silence is awesomeee.
I actually know and talk to everyone regularly. They're from San Diego county, I knew them before they were big haha.
Mitch Lucker has one of the most incredibly insane vocals in all of metal, in my opinion.
He's really laidback though, really nice guy too.

Mmmm. Just gave a few tracks a listen and you are correct sir. "This is Exile" the song, is pretty bad ***. I think I recognize it from their set list actually. B-A. I like the distortion effects mid-song also, that's a nice touch. And the breakdowns I'm hearing are sick. That guys vocals are pretty nice. Damn.

It's pretty odd how pretty much all the death/hardcore fans in this thread are connected closely to their local scene, huh?

Haha, I don't even have a local scene! Which really sucks, but hey I still have my music. You know I feel odd, I'm wicked picky about my extreme music, for some reason I can't stand Whitechapel. Suicide Silence is awesome though, so at least I don't worry about that.

Yeah, San Diego is an especially connected scene if you ask me. Everyone knows everyone for the most part, we all go to the same shows, it's all just good times.
I like making new friends in the pit, haha. Like, whenever a band finishes a song, I like walking around talking to random kids and what-not.
It's cool, cause if s**t happens to go down, you have a new friend to have your back, hahahaha.

And Aberinkula! For shame. What do you not like about Whitechapel?

Just curious, how did everyone start to get into their extreme music genre?
Ha, if that doesn't make sense, what bands/genre eventually led you to enjoy the genre of music you're really into now?

I'm the same way. I've met alot of cool peeps from going to shows and them complimenting me on my throwdown (being a Tae Kwon Do black belt, my flying spin kicks tend to look better and are usually more deadly than others). A lot of really cool people. If I ever get a band started, they'll be there, I already have people who'll check it out, heh.

As for how I got into it. It started out slowly, I guess. I'm a late bloomer when it comes to the genre.

Before these days, up until I was, say... 16, the heaviest band I listened to was probably Linkin Park. I was actually (and still am) very much into Hip Hop as a genre and that comprised of about 90% of what I listen to, and everthing else like good Punk and what not was the other 10%. Then I slowly started to be introduced by my friends (this was a small town, mind you) to heavier bands like Shadows Fall and Avenged Sevenfold. I became a big fan of the second, and I maintained that for a while.

After I moved to where I live now, I started to get more into strict metalcore, and found how much I liked the heaviness of All That Remains, finding that they basically took what I like from A7X and just amplifying it. I started meeting some people who were deeper into the extreme scene localy as I made friends, who listened to the genre almost exclusively. Lots of Job for a Cowboy, Killswitch Engage and The Black Dahlia Murder. At first, when shown this, I was repulsed, mostly by the pig-squeal lyrics or black metal screeches.

Then I heard the song "The Weak Willed" by All That Remains, the heaviest song yet recorded by the band, and I fell in love with it. Shortly after, my best friend's myspace profile became "Bow Down" by Born of Osiris, a band lacking pig squeals that stuck with primarily mid-gutturals. I loved it, though not at first, and the more and more I heard, the more I started to like them. BOO replaced ATR as my heaviest band, and after that, I realized there was no return.

My buddy prior to this had told me (he's a guitarist in the genre, and we are now trying to form a band) that once you catch the ear for it, you just keep getting heavier, and heavier, and heavier. Every time you think "Oh, I'm done, it can't be any heavier without being bad" you find a new band that's heavier that you like.

And he was completely right. I've gone from modern heavy metal and now I've stopped just behind porngrind. I'm a big fan of American Black Metal, grindcore, death metal, and especially, deathcore. I think one of the main reasons I loved the scene so much and a big catalyst for me getting into it was going to my first show and see all the crazy energy that just vibrated through the room. I'd been to the same establishment, rapping with a different band whom were an Indie Pop group. But with a deathcore group on stage it was just completely different. People were head banging, jumping, screaming, and throwing down, which I was instantly in love with. I found that deathcore, hardcore, grindcore is the only musical genre that you can dance to, and that's something I loved to do in my Hip Hop phase (and I still do it). Being a martial artist, it came very naturaly to me, and I love it.

To this day, there's rarely something I'd rather go do than go to a show. It's just so much fun, and its exciting. It's rare when I can say "Dude, I totally owned a guy with a flying 360 hook kick". Good times, and usually those guys are my buddies after the show. Its just so heavy and aggressive, the music I mean, that it just hits you and flows through you. It's like a drug you can't get enough of. Once you feel it, every other genre sounds kinda limp in comparison. Though I'm still a fan of everything else, Deathcore (and related genres) has basically taken up about 45% of what I listen to now a days. The other 45% is Hip Hop, and the 10% is everything else.

In the past months, I've started to learn how to scream/growl and I plan on being a vocalist very soon. I just love the stuff, and I want to be a part of it, to be the one who makes that aggressive energy come out of myself and others, and be the one who makes people go crazy in the pit. But also just to express my own turn on the typical deathcore lyrical and vocal style.

So yeah, that's how I came into it.

I've come from Avenged Sevenfold to All That Remains to Born of Osiris. And now I'm listening to stuff like Suicide Silence, Bring Me The Horizen, Whitechapel, Carnifex, and The Black Dahlia Murder.

That's the problem Boothy, I don't know why I don't like them >_< But I can tell you who I like a bit now, Deicide. They're pretty cool and heavy. They mostly have stuff on XM radio from the album 'Virtue has Few Friends.'
Hope I got the CD correct I get confused with all the artist's they have on there >_<
Oh **** I forgot, I saw this wicked kick-*** band on Head-banger's ball, and these guys were ****ing KICK ***! But, me being unlucky ol' me, the information on the song said 'undefined.' I was quickly saddened and withdrew to my musical corner. But still, if I find out who it was, I'll quickly go after the album. The video is kinda hard to remember, so that also hurts my brain.

For me, my venture into this music started with Avenged Sevenfold, I used to listen to stuff like Zen did, you know, Linkin Park and the rest of the Nu-Metal/Rap-rock fray as well as other hip-hop artists (My old mentor was Eminem and I can actually stand listening to him, if hes on the radio or TV I won't change the station, but the rest of the genre, I hate).

Anyways, my first real extreme album was 'Waking the Fallen,' now I had liked Metal earlier, stuff like Metallica and it grew into stuff like Amon Amarth and Mastodon, after that phase I discovered such bands as Between the Buried and Me, Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine (which I listened to during my 'metal' phase). My friends helped me too (much like Zen, I live in a small town), my best friend loves Mudvayne, so they helped me get interested in the vocal part of the music. And from there I bloomed.

Then through Wikipedia I began listening to such bands as Heaven Shall Burn and All Shall Perish, and that's how it flew into this. I'm still learning though. As for me becoming a vocalist, I'm not really practicing much, but I'm finding my boundaries, my scream/growls have gone from the vocal style of Anders Friden, lead singer of In Flames, to a much higher pitched voice of such vocalists as, yeah I said it, Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth. But yeah, I'm learning.

Slight-Rock obsession/Hip-hop obsession > Rock Music Like Breaking Benjamin > Harder rock like Tool > Metal like Mastodon > Hardcore music

That's pretty much the time-line.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with my buddy weedeater on most of this stuff.

Some deathcore is good, but that's a band-by-band standard for me. I heard tell that WBCC may be breaking up soon. Allegedly Jeremy wants to do something poppier.

At least that's what Holmes and Brad from Manchester Black told me.

But you know how rumors are around here. Last I heard, Scarlett O'Hara is getting back together with me, DJ, Shane, Griffis, and Eric. No keyboards. Haha. I also heard tell that I'm joining Blackheart to replace Jeremy Bolin.

Of course all that was before everyone found about the Navy thing.

And let's not forget about the rumor that Pat from RTV is joining Norma Jean.

Oh, the Columbus rumor mill.

Bands to check out?

Wolves in the Throne Room.(doomy black metal)
Autumn Aria.(Proggy MDM)
Manchester Black.(Groovy southern hardcore-ish rock)
Weedeater.(Doomy, blackish stoner metal)
Agalloch.(Awesome.)
Integrity.(Classic CROSSOVER)
Skeletonwitch.(Blackened thrash metal)
Cursed.(Dark hardcore punk)

PS: Good to see you, Tim.

Actually, I didn't want to say anything... but Whitechapel isn't exactly my favorite either. But I havn't heard a full album by them. And that is usually what gets me into a band, is an entire project in its complete form.

How did my musical taste start? I've been screaming since... 2004? Around the time that I liked bands like Staind, Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Hawthorne Heights, Slipknot... Etc. So yeah. Bands I no longer like to listen to. But without those bands, I wouldn't have the voice I have today, considering I started my growls at an early age. But my original scream was a drythroat squeal, similar to pg.99 or Drop Dead, Gorgeous.

Anyway. I started playing drums. I got into bands like From First to Last, that were giving something fresh, and different. In 2006, I got into Underoath. Define The Great Line was a major point in my life, where I said... "wow.". The guitar riffs and drumming were not at all traditional, compared to what I had listened to before. With this, I went out to seek more technical music. This is where The Number 12 Looks Like You comes in. This was the band, that I took all my inspiration from. Without The Number 12 Looks Like You, I definitely wouldn't be the same, considering they were the band that gave me the idea to train my voice for high pitched vocals. So, with this new found love for high-pitched vocals, dual vox, mathy time sigs, tempo changes, and incorporation of Jazz...

Next, I found the different genres that Number 12 incorporated into their mix. Emo/Screamo, Deathcore, Mathrock, Hardcore Punk.

I listened to each individually. Which I still do, and this is me right now. In fact, The Number 12 is still my favorite band.

But, after that, I went to see Strike the Choir live. That show was my favorite, absolutely ever. And it was their CD release show. I bought their EP It's Worth It
, and over time, listened to each song more than 200 times. (iTunes count). STC's ep is to this day, my favorite CD. I supported those guys, and I still do, and with that support, I developed a bond to the guys. Their frontman recently invited my friend and I into his home to record our debut EP. The EP is still in the mixing process. (We just finished it...monday?)

But. That's basically all that shaped me into this point in my life. Also, my band is playing tonight. I'm doing something I love. :]
