Airline Security: Child Pronz?

Recommended Posts

Due to recent Nigerian crotch bomber's failed attempt to light more than just his reproductive organs on fire with explosives, scanners at airlines are now including full x-ray style pictures.

This, shockingly, has ruffled the feathers of moralists around the country[s]?

Does this mean that children that are scanned produce pictures of them naked? I don't think so. The images aren't detail friendly and more or less are so benign I can show them to my grandmother and my five year old sister without having to explain what a penis is. Is this overly invasive? Is there any threat to be concerned about? Are we overreacting?

I'm gonna have to pull out my Captain Obvious cape for a second and point out that the article is from the U.K., as you said. But that also means most of the hubbub is centered around there, and not here in the U.S. Well, not yet, anyway.

Anyway, I don't see why they're in a huff. Sure it's sad that we have to resort to such scanners, but in this day and age, it's really become a necessity. And with cases like that guy nearly blowing up an airplane, anatomically-correct scanning is what's got them worried? Really?

... and after seeing images of some of the results of these scans, if anyone got off on that stuff, they have issues.

On the radio this morning they said such scanners were in the US too, but I didn't want to really listen to people whine about me posting an article from FOX news.

Anyway I remember this being discussed in my Science, Technology, and Ethics course in college two years ago. The professor was convinced the scans bordered on indecent exposure/pornography and in her words:

"Sexual perverts who like little children will get jobs at these airline security places just so they can get off."

I have no idea just how paranoid that is, but she has a little girl. Then again, she's also turned on by brains in jars [don't ask]. Go figure.

In a situation in which they would have no possible way to act on their... desires(?)... I don't think there is anything wrong with this. It makes sense to search, & it makes sense to search children as well. There's a possibility that anyone is a predator or whatever, but they would be looking at the scanned image for only a few seconds. If they get turned on, there's not too much they can do about it anyway.

Meh.

Since they're willing to kill civilians, who's to say they wouldn't use a child to hide explosives? By excluding kids from the scan, you'd just be making them a target. =/ It's a sad sick world at times and unfortunately, this kind of thing is necessary.

We are overreacting. Or rather, lots of people are overreacting. I for one may be underreacting.

I don't think that current technology is responsible for some of the TSA security issues. It is the human component that is at fault, and can you really blame the TSA security folks? They have a horribly repetitive, boring job that earns them a fairly low wage. It shouldn't be a shock that they aren't as viglant as they should be.

Lets face it, they didn't think that a guy flying into to Detroit in the middle of winter without a coat was suspicious. Do you really think that they'll more observant when it comes to looking at thousands of detailed x-rays a day?

Yes we do have the full body scanners in the US- they did one on a trial basis at my local airport and I used it back in September when I went on holiday to Canada. And to be honest you see nothing but an outline. One of the local news stations showed what you'd see during a 6pm broadcast before I went on holiday. If you're going to freak out about seeing an outline you need to lay off the glue.

I guess if they have a problem with children going through the full body scanners they could use the old fashioned method to avoid issues. But for adults this is my safety or my family's safety we're talking about... and if you want to be scarred for life go ahead and get a better view f me.

While we're on the subject though, has anyone besides myself traveled by air from the US to Canada lately and back and noticed how much more stuff you have to go to to get back into the states then get into Canada?

Actually I breezed through airline security when I was coming back from the Philippines into Hawaii, and Hawaii into California.

For one, at the airports I went through in the US, I did not in fact get groped by a woman [or even a man]. When I first traveled to Heathrow, and I was actually old enough to qualify as a homicidal maniac in my own right, I was happily rubbed down by a woman old enough to collect Social Security had she been a US citizen.

In Manila International, I was groped at every possible opportunity, my bags were passed through scanners that too so long I was pretty sure they'd become permanently lodged in the machine, and the same thing happened in Hong Kong as well as interior China. And while people might complain about a 'pat' down in the US, I can safely say other foreign countries have no qualms about giving your reproductive organs a quick squeeze.

Every time I get lonely for some burgeoning intimacy, I just travel international. And while I don't get my balls squashed by an airline attendant the way my dad and male cousins do, I DO get my breasts felt up just in case I'm smuggling explosives in my padded underwire bra. And they complain about a touch free device? PAH!

I only have experiance with traveling back and forth from the States to the inlaws but when I was coming back from Kelowna, BC to Seattle, WA it was kinda crazy. For one thing even though you're supposed to get to security 2 hours prior to international flights the security gates didn't open until 45 minutes prior to my departure- so I at least had plenty of time for check in (15 US dollars for one bag to fly about 500 miles or so). And I just had to send my carry on through not take my shoes off or anything like I did back in my hometown airport. There wasn't even any groping or a hand held metal scanner so I feel kinda hurt.:animeswea I'd have to say in some ways the Canadians are pretty cool and not into groping.

Getting my connecting flight in Seattle was more of a juggle (I do partially blame the time of day- 6:45AM ) But on the bright side since it was a larger airport there were more customs agents (4 compaired to 2 in Kelowna) I believe the lay overs at SeaTac were worse than the security checks in either YLW or ROC.

Having said that though I did have fun getting into Niagra Falls ON over the past summer from NY. Also the security guards at Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport don't seem to mind a quick grab.

I can already see the celebrity scan pron piling up in the tabloids. These things are ridiculous. There'll be some easy peasy way to avoid detection by these scans like with every other type of security anyway.

Honestly, I think it isn't much more paranoid to be against these things than to be for them. You might as well just not fly at all if you want to be 100% sure of not being victim of terrorist attacks and the likes in plains. Saves a few walruses and penguins too.

Boob outline? There's obvious nipple. If this were national television, it'd get censored like mad at any time before 10PM.

Clearly the choice of a somewhat attractive 20-something female undermines the "this isn't porn" argument somewhat.

If these machines make it less of a hassle to move through the airports, than I say lets use them. Now if the engineers were particularly clever they would devise genitalia recognition software to run on the machine and blur out the unnecessary unless something suspicious is found. I'm pretty sure all it takes is a firmware update.

Your professor actually said that? Don't the Universities over there screen people to stop that kind of blatant stupidity getting through? :P

Anyway, I will say the obvious: there are many, many professions that could (and do) attract pedophiles. If we take your professor's reasoning to its natural conclusion, children won't be able to interact with adults on any level anywhere in society because there's a risk of pedophilia.

In terms of these scanners specifically, I think my biggest issue with them is that they will add massive inefficiency to airports. I'm prepared to go through the security hurdles if it keeps everybody safe - but if they start adding full body scanners, I imagine airports across America will move a lot slower.

I just don't know what the right balance is though. You can always do more for security, but you also have to try to keep things moving.

These scanners would only really be very useful if you could have a lot of people just walking through them, rather than needing to take individual people aside to be scanned. But who knows, I suppose it's at least important that people are looking carefully at security rather than brushing it off.
