Massive thoughts and love to everyone in Japan. Living in an earthquake-prone area across the Pacific, I can relate. Everything I read and see regarding this is just terrible. It looks like the tsunamis could be equally devastating.

[strike]Syk3 (Greg), who was a popular member and moderator here, currently lives in Japan. I'll let everyone know as soon as I hear from him.[/strike]

Just heard from Greg and he's doing fine!

It's much too early to estimate the damage, but this is already being called one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history.

I tried to get in contact from Greg as well. However there is none yet. Isn't there a warning for tsunami for California now? I have so many friends in Chiba, Japan as well as around the Pacific. I am worried sick.

They're calling it the seventh largest earthquake in recorded history. My heart is absolutely broken for them.

Hawaii is under a tsunami warning.

The west coast is under a watch. Now I'm hearing California's under a warning.

I have many, many friends all up and down the west coast. To say that I am terrified for them is an understatement.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this. Be safe... Edited by Sangome

Yeah, but we won't know for several hours whether or not coastal communities on the U.S./South American west coast will need to be evacuated or not. However, any potential damage will be relatively minor compared to what is happening around Asia right now. Australia is also under a tsunami warning, and they'll see the waves long before we do.

Hawaii is also under a major tsunami warning. Beachside communities are moving as far as a half mile inland, and tourists are being advised to move to the top of their hotels when the waves hit in a few hours.

Russia, New Zealand, and Australia no longer under tsunami but apparently Mainland US is....hrm. (According to Al Jazeera)

EDIT: Greg is safe! I have just heard from him on Facebook. Edited by Japan

I've been watching live coverage since it all happened. The death toll rose so quickly, it was scary. The 200 and 300 bodies that were found on a beach near Sendai was a huge hit. Apparently someone tweeted not long ago that they were on a beach on Maui and the sea receded and revealed reefs. Not a good sign. I just hope that it doesn't hit them too bad. They are saying Crescent City might see the largest waves if it hits and that the traffic on route 101 is packed. Back in Japan 3000 people have been evacuated near that nuclear powerplant. Ugh. Madness.

I have a friend who lives there and I'm somewhat worried. Edited by Starscream

Been watching this all morning, since I found out late last night; I went to bed about the time Shy was posting, apparently. Got some video from CNN last night, and more this morning from them and FOX and The Weather Channel.

...it's flooding in New Jersey, for some reason. o_O

Uh. All the news stations, and TWC especially, are making a point of noting that they're watching Twitter feeds for faster live updates. According to CNN right at this moment, Maui saw a seven-foot rise, followed immediately by a seven-foot drop, and then a seven foot rise right back. There's a bunch of damned commercials right now, though, so I can't give anything else immediately useful....

Some of the videos coming in from Sendai are horrible. From what's been said about them, there were 13-foot high tides sweeping across the mainland. I've been watching farmland literally swallowed by water; dozens of half-submerged cars clumped together by the sides of highways, like forgotten toys clustered by the rim of the bathtub; an airport literally engulfed in a matter of seconds. I think four nuclear power plants were shut down successfully, but there may be one (or two) other plants having some damage issues. There was also apparently a whirlpool off the coast somewhere.

Okay, TWC and CNN are confirming now that Maui saw seven- to eight-foot tsunami-effect waves, which wrought a little bit of havoc there, but overall Hawaii has not been overly damaged so far. Pearl Harbor got basically nothing, and the US Military there declared the tsunami threat over about an hour or so ago, although obviously that's not the case on the rest of the island chain. =P

According to this news video uploaded by RussiaToday (also news article here), the Kuril Islands saw tsunami waves up to 3 meters (about ten feet) high, along with a few 5.0-magnitude aftershocks.

As far as US West Coast warnings go, if I recall right officials don't expect more than a three- or four-foot variation. I'll verify that as soon as I can.

Yes, as far as I can tell, we're not in any severe danger here; it's just that we're being extra cautious. Better safe than sorry. Apparently, beaches will be closed today because the currents could get weird, and you don't want to take the chance that someone could get hurt, or worse. But as far as I know, that's the extent of any danger we are in here. Thanks to everyone who has shown concern for those on the West Coast, though. I think most Californians who visit OB are too far inland for any quake fallout to affect us in any way.

If anyone here has the means, then please donate to the relief effort. Thanks for the reminder, Shin. It's easy to forget how much we can actually help by donating.

I'm praying for all the people affected by this, and hoping to hear from friends and family in Hawaii soon.

Plant is in Fukushima, and residents within a 3 km (a little less than two mile) radius of the plant were asked to evacuate (about 3000 people). Residents inside 10km (about six miles or so) were asked to stay home.

There are no reported immediate signs of problems, however.

This is horrible to hear. I've been folowing it via the American Radio station and several people that I know that lived on Hokkaido island were hit by massive waves. Luckily they were all evacuated to safe ground and everyone's ok. My heart goes out to all the families in Japan that have had this devastating quake basically destroy their lives. I hope that Japan has an effective disaster recovery plan in place. Edited by AvalonAngel

Yeah anyway. Besides redcross and global giving do you know of any other charities that are doing aid work and all that shiz? I want to put in coinage.

OH nukeplant. Nuclear physicist Dr Walt Patterson told the BBC it sounds like there is a serious problem at the plant.
"It's the sort of thing that nuclear engineers have nightmares about," he says. "If it is not resolved in the next few hours it will get serious. If the core is uncovered, then those rods at the top may get hot enough to melt themselves."
I can see all of this going on, and it's sad to see and hear about. I can only wonder as to how the people will live their lives now, though all they can do is move on. The lives and precious treasures lost to this quake are beyond measure in the scope of humanity. I hope those lost rest in peace.

It's called getting a sharable source, melon-head. =)

Speaking of, another update on the plant in Fukushima; they're going to try releasing some radioactive vapor to relieve pressure on the system, which has risen to about fifty-percent above what's considered normal. Meanwhile the US has sent reactor coolant that direction.

Ducky's link finally let me figure out where those round burny things were. It's an oil refinery in Ichihara. I can't find anything current on that situation, though. Seems all interested parties just took pictures of the big billowing flames and went looking for more water damage and whirlpools. =/

EDIT!!!

I did, however, manage to find some news from tomorrow!! Specifically, it gives some better details on industrial and economic repercussions.

Is it really the 12th already over there? I mean, it just now got to be the 11th over here ... wait. When did it get to be twenty after one? o O

Good to hear that Hawaii essentially dodged a bullet. They really are truly blessed right now.

Also good to hear that they don't expect anything too bad for the west coast...as Shin said, most OBers from the area are more inland, but I also have non theO/OB friends in the area whose locations I was unsure of. But I'll tell you what, when this was all happening late last night, and I was unsure of what's going on, my stomach was in knots. Like. I was acting like I do when I''m about to get a severe storm. Endlessly glad to hear everyone's going to be okay. <3

But as for the subject at hand. Hearing and seeing images from Japan is just so heartbreaking...I don't have any money to donate, but I'll certainly try once I can. And I'll continue to pray for everyone affected by this. Edited by Sangome

I feel so fortunate to be in Kumamoto, which has been relatively unaffected by the disaster. The scale of this thing is absolutely staggering.

Glad to hear you're doing okay, Dagger.

Watching the news coverage of this event is just heart-breaking.
I heard from my friends in Chiba. The oil refinery aflame there is slowing down and they think the nuclear plant thing is being over rated.
Really? That's good to hear. I've been looking for news on that refinery since yesterday and haven't found anything except the same old "Ichihara is burning" deal.

As far as I know, the Fukushima plant is well under control, and no US aid was actually required. I think the 'overrated' part comes from the threat of meltdown, which is a little more destructive, both immediately and in the long-termâ??but I'm glad to see both clear of danger levels.
