Big Poppa Hump and the Hump Wars

The inmates ran the asylum when Big Poppa Hump and his Buddy Christ avatar spread calamity across the forums.

The early part of OtakuBoards history is often characterized by long periods of unchecked back-and-forth flaming, known as “wars.”  “The Hump Wars” became one of the more famous examples of these incidents.  “The Hump Wars” began in May 2001 when a member by the name of “Big Poppa Hump” joined OtakuBoards Version 2 and immediately began flaming other members. Although Big Papa Hump would have been promptly banned had he registered during later iterations of OtakuBoards, his encounter with the forums was during a time when many days would pass without an authority figure even looking at the site.

Big Poppa Pump’s flaming was so abusive that his name managed to spread across the site before he had even reached a dozen posts, with members clamoring for a ban.  Some members tried to reason with Big Poppa Hump while others tried to smother him with kindness in hopes that he would stop disrupting the regular insanity that was Version 2.  However, Hump would answer their attempts with caustic insults, always resulting in members simply giving up their attempted kindness and returning Hump’s insults with nasty attacks of their own.  As the uproar swelled to epic proportions, members began to parody Big Poppa Hump through fan fiction stories or mock accounts. On one such occasion, ZF Foredaddy created a Dragonball Z-inspired parody in which Big Poppa Hump took the form of Cell and went around the boards raping members with his suction tube.

While Big Poppa Hump’s calamity spread in the form of a volley of flames and crude parodies, members looked for some sort final resolution. During this time, Sephiroth answered the problem with a level-headed approach; he urged members to simply ignore Big Poppa Hump. Sephiroth only acknowledged BPH to the point of telling him how ridiculous his behavior was and that he would be removed from the site imminently. Unlike others, Sephiroth refused to get into a name-calling match with OtakuBoards‘ most notorious member. Big Poppa Hump answered back by creating another user name called “Aeris247,” which he used in an attempt to make a fool out of Sephiroth by befriending him and publicly turning against him. However, Sephiroth was suspicious of this new member, who meekly stood up for Big Poppa Hump in various threads. So, Sephiroth played along while biding his time for the saga’s ultimate conclusion.

When Sephiroth finally contacted Shinji (an administrator at the time) and alerted him to what was going on, he had Shinji check Aeris247’s IP address. Suffice to say, Sephiroth’s suspicions were correct. Big Poppa Hump, his false account and anything resembling an imposter account was banned and wiped off of OtakuBoards permanently.  However, the Hump Wars became canon in OtakuBoards history and Big Poppa Hump would remain a topic of conversation among older members for years.
