A Scanner Darkly

I've just been browsing around the net and stumbled across a new Richard Linklater movie by the name Of A Scanner Darkly. I'm not really familiar with any of his works but I've seen pictures of the movie and the visual style itself is enough to get me intrigued, so after a little research I found out it was based off of a Phillip K. Dick novel. Again, I'm unfamiliar with his work, but whatever.

The visuals really are something different, like Waking Life(which I never got the chance to see) but still rather different. Apperently it's made by animating over the top of live-action filming, it comes off as looking like a vectorised animation very cool. It stars Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochran.

Discussion is open, people. Please fill me in on any more info that I'm missing, I'm off to look for a place to buy the book.

I was watching The Screen Savers yesterday and they featured this movie/book thing. They commented more than what you said... but I can't find the script for that show. All they had was a link to a site.
http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=19085

Hey folks, Harry here... When I saw that image from Premiere Magazine show up online, I was sort of let down. Not by the image, but that the first image was a pixel-y low res shot - when I knew good and well that the artists working here in Austin on Linklater's production of Phillip K Dick's A SCANNER DARKLY... well, it just wasn't going to do the film any justice.
So I contacted Linklater and the producer of the film, Tommy Pallotta and asked if we could have a higher resolution image of the Premiere image. Instead, they wanted to give me 3!

These 3 images are grabs from the trailer which looks like WARNER INDEPENDENT is attaching to WB's CONSTANTINE in February! More reason to see that film, eh? Like you needed any.

Anyway, just got off the horn with Tommy and as is revealed from the images... he told me that they're going for a far more realistic look for the animation, than they did on A WAKING LIFE. The reason is obvious. On that film, the movie was episodic and lent itself to a variety of freeform styles that the artists had a freedom to explore. Here, he says there's far more thought and effort going into designing the scenes and frankly, they're designing much of the film in animation. Also, most of the animators for this project are coming out of the world of illustration and are graphic novel artists - so what we'll eventually get when it is done will be the closest thing we're likely to get to a living graphic novel telling of A SCANNER DARKLY... and that... that's way cool.

Here are the images... Click on them to Enlarge... enjoy:

Ha, wow, someone actually made a thread for this film before? Color me impressed.

Anyway, you'll find the latest trailer for A Scanner Darkly here. The movie just looks better every time I see something new; the rotoscoping (the technique used to make the film seem as if it is animated) may look gimmicky at first, but it adds a really surreal element to the film, which is key to the novel. I don't think that stuff like Agent Fred's shapeshifting outfit or the multi-eyed creature would work as well if they were CGI (not to mention that the visual style makes the characters themselves look like they're in another world).

Everything I've heard and seen about the film so far has been positive, and I'm glad that it's seemingly doing the novel justice, because A Scanner Darkly is a great novel. If you're planning on seeing this, and you haven't read the novel yet, then you definitely should - it's not very long at all and it's just so hilarious and insane. I'll be re-reading it before I go see the film for sure.

The release date is July 7th. Unfortunately, since the film isn't exactly mainstream, it'll be a limited release in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and Seattle, and then it'll filter out elsewhere after that each week. I think that the film will be well worth seeing if it ends up screening in a theater that's close by. :)

Did I hear about this a while ago, or am I thinking of something else?

Anyway, I saw a poster for this when I went to see x3, and seeing Shin's post, I'm actually really excited about it now. It looks neat, and I'm going to look for the book when I'm at the library today.

And yes, that is Norman Bates. I saw Psycho the other day, and I have the hugest crush on him. =]

I thought this movie had disappeared off the face of the Earth for the longest time. Thanks for the heads up about the trailer, Shin.

Only problem is I haven't found the novel anywhere, guess it's eBay for me.

I first heard about this movie about a year and a half ago [I was an IMDB addict :animeswea ] but then I thought it had just disappeared until one of my friends brought it up recently.
It looks like it's going to be a really good movie.
I am really looking forward to it coming out!

&&Thanks for the new trailer link, Shinmaru!!
