Does a cultural difference count as a race? If it does, I have this to say: I like to play out the Canadian sterotype, really. Being sterotyped as the most polite people on earth with a slight love for beer and violent sports isn't the worst thing to be sterotyped as. But as a cultural race, I think that sadly we do typical view ourselves as more moral than, say, Americans - and this may be entirly based on certain actions by a certain government *caugh* - but it's not really true. As a generalization, Canadians are all 'We're not with them... For the last time we aren't with them!' because we generally view ourselves to be superior, morally. Wether it's true or not... well... The only real problem with this, though, is that the only people really effected - Americans - don't give two flying rats' ***** about what Canadians think and therefore we're just screaming 'WE'RE BETTER THAN YOU' into a wall of lead. But as long as it makes us feel better... But when Americans come to Canada, across the preverbial wall of lead, they're is a feeling of tension between many Canadians and Americans - a sort of sick, culturally bred hatred, mild or extreme. So, ya, Canadians feel superior to Americans, but only feel dominant when Americans come to Canada, and Americans only typically feel inferior or opressed while in Canada. I've been to America for extended periods of time, and I generally get a similar vibe. The above is, of course, based entirely on the Canadian-American stereotypes.
Look back at my previous post, and you will see that I am comparing two squirrells from different ancestries. The australian flying squirrel is a marsipual (it has the pouch like kangaroos and koalas). It has the same common ancestor as the other marsipuals, while the north american flying squirrel has a different ancestor. That's where I question evolution. By chance, you get 2 very similar flying squirrels, that aren't even related to eachother?
Welllll... I do seem to remember a certain supercontinent some few millions of years ago. Lets just say that these common ancestors, whatever they are, were very similar at one time; except that one species ended up drifting to Europe where the pouch was unneccessary, and the other ended up in Australia where one was. Evolution took over and gave the creature what it needed. It's like fossils that have been found on Pacific Islands. Fossils of the exact same animals have been found on mainland asia, but the ones found on islands are 1/10th the size. They're the same animal, but because they were thrust into radically different enviroments they changed completely to suit their needs, be it small size for small enviroment or pouch for keeping young safe.
Yes, I am a Christian and if you don't like it deal with it. I did not want to be taught the theory of evolution, but it's not my decision. So maybe all of you atheist should just learn to deal with being taught ID if all of us Christians have to deal with learning evolution. P.S. Where IS the missing link?
Go to Catholic school. In public school you learn about things that have proof. Your taught things that will help you and things that we know to broaden your mind. You don't go to be preached too. P.S. Ever hear of a woman named Lucy?
Hitler never admitted he was "going evil". He was so staunch on his beliefs he let his country die before he realized that the war was lost. Even then, he killed himself instead of being captured. Illium, while we can both agree that the US Gov't was too slow to react to this disaster, and that we should have been better prepared- blaming the lack of relief on Bush is both irrational and infantile. Don't take advantage of a truly tragic situation to push your political agenda. This is exactly the wrong way of going about this the wrong way. If you think President Bush is Hitler, take it to another thread... I think attacking him EVEN while he is working at this very moment to help NO is not only innappropriate, but misplaced.
Fair enough. I wasn't making the comparison, I even said I didn't really agree. But I was only responding to Retributions question on why I hated the Bush Admin. The comparison was more directed at the fact that Hitler didn't try to hide the fact that he was invading somone; he invaded Poland and didn't hide his reasons. Bush is all 'Progress, progress, Iraq, progress, democracy, peace, fair trade, down with the evil-doers, etc etc.' and than he turns around and slaps it's biggest trading partner in the face. I wasn't pushing my agenda. Part of the blame does rest with the Bush Administration though, but my main blame for the slow reaction to this disaster was directed at FEMA. I don't know all that much about FEMA, but considering that it has the word 'Federal' in it's name, I'm assuming it's a branch of the government.
What can you do to 'fight' the hurricane? Board up your windows? Yes, you can do that, but it doesn't require watching the storm roll in from your door stoop. It would be hard to throw everything away, but if there's a manditory city wide evacuation, it's common sense to know that it must be a large storm. Cities don't have manditory evacuations for any old storm; they have them when there's a significant risk that you're going to die if you choose to stay. Sadly, that is what happened to a great many people. If there were a manditory evacuation, yes, I would leave my house. My life is more important than worldly possesions. I'm not saying this is some easy decision, but I would rather keep living and have to start over, rather than have everything end.
Fair enough. I don't think either of us knows what was running through the minds of the people of N.O. I don't think even they know.
What suffering what you endured? I'm being serious about this question; it's not meant to be sarcastic, despite how it sounds.
Well, my community has a large reliance on the Beef industry. My family personally doesn't work on a Cow farm, but the large majority of people in my community do. When the vast majority of the community suffers, everyone in the community suffers. The beef industry of Canada is partically dead; and the Bush Administration's protectionist policies are directly to blame. The Beef Ban has made it nearly impossible for most beef farms to sell their product. My community has been bled dry, and my entire countries econemy has suffered tragically due to it. Furthermore, the Bush Admin's protectionism has killed another prime industry of Canada: Lumber. By completely disregarding NAFTA and illegally ******* over the Canadian Lumber Industry they've already cost us 5 Billion or more and caused hundreds of plants to go out of buisness, thousands of jobs have been lost. Again, and this one is more of the US' Government in general, the US completely disregarded legality and fairness by patroling Canadian waters in the Artic with it's subs. As little a deal as this is now, once the North West Passage opens up it's going to be a VERY big deal; the US has a 'If we can't have it, Canada sure can't.' attitude on the subject. Arguements to declare it international waters, thus killing Canada's right to taxes of ships passing through, are already in progress. In closing: The Bush Administration makes me sick. They prattle on about spreading democracy and peace and making the world a better place, and than turn around and do exactly what they claim to be stopping. Two-faced rotten bastard. I've heard people say Bush is worse than Hitler, and, though I don't necessarily agree, they do have a point: at least Hitler addmitted he was going evil. There's nothing worse than somone who says 'Don't worry, I got your back!' and than shoots you.
Right, valid points. However, I was saying that those who could have gotten out in time, but chose to fortify their homes were foolish. Yes, there are those people who were trying to leave, but got caught in the storm, or those who did not have the means, but those people weren't everyone. Make no mistake - there defintely people who decided to camp out in their homes.
True... but think about it. If your entire life is your home, you have NOTHING else, everything you own in the world is there, would you be so quick to just throw it away? Would you throw away everything you've worked towards in your entire life? Not many were expecting this to be the worst natural disaster in the US' history, they thought they'd ride it out in their home because, well, it's their home... I wouldn't just give up my house without a fight.
As for the government being rotten ... eh, I still stand in the same place. I definitely don't approve of [most of] Bush policy, but I'm not going to call the man rotten or facist.
Fair enough. But maybe when you've suffered as much as my family and my friends families and my communities have at the hands of this man you'll understand.
True, it's useless, but I was telling Chibi something. I wasn't preaching, I was saying that those who camped out by choice aren't getting as much sympathy, as those who just couldn't physically make it out, from me at least. As for it being cruel, I don't think so - I think I was being pretty reasonable. And really, are we disallowed to remark on what should have been done, for the reason it might be cruel to the person? No! That's what history is. We remark about what should have happened. And yes, you do what you can in the present to help people.
As it was, somthing like 30% of New Orleans was below the poverty line. There was somthing around 70,000 people who stayed and took refuge in the Superdome and surrounding area. I'm **** at math, but I think that 70,000 is somthing around 30% of 500,000. Wait, no, it's less. So the majority DID get out. But in all honesty, do you know how difficult it is to just get everyone out in the course of a week or two? Now throw in the fact that maybe 50%, maybe more, have no transportation at all. They never had a chance to get out; and I'd rather be caught hunkered down in the Superdome than caught in traffic.
Well, I'm no Bush fan, but I know enough to say that my country's government is not rotten. Yes, those holding office have different view from me [or you, for that matter], but that doesn't automatically make it a rotten-to-the-core system. Really, I'd like to think that the American government has more intergrity than that of the Chinese.
Not that I really want to get into this, butttttttt... Wether you share his views or not, the current Bush Administration is rotten. When they aren't busy screwing over NAFTA or handing out under-the-table bonuses to the CotW, they're busy being baught out by King Fahd or Haliburtun. When Bush isn't on vacation, he's busy doing favours for the people who got him elected (See: The Ambassador to Canada). The fact is the Bush Administration is rotten to the core. And ya, it's better than the Chinese Dictatorship. But that's like saying 'Least we're not the Nazis!'. Just because it isn't the worst doesn't mean it's not terrible.
Holy **** that's just.... Well, I didn't watch the video because I've already seen too much stuff happening to all the survivors. I mean **** (sorry there's just no other word to really use even crap doesn't cover it! ) These people survived a catergory 4 hurricane just to die of starvation and insulin shock! THere was no problem getting aide to FLorida last year when they had 4 hurricanes there! Why are these states different? LIke I've said before and I'm saying again. Parents are watching their children DIE and children are watching their elderly parents suffere and die for all things sacred. Why is aide to these people only coming today nearly a week after this? That's just a bunch of bad kharma waiting to happen for Bush.
I really don't know, it's very, very odd. In places like California that are earthquake prone, billions a year are spent on defence and evacuation plans; almost nothing like that in New Orleans. I mean the bloody city is two meters below Sea Level on the sea. Wouldn't you expect some super-detailed evac plan for the eventuallity that the city will sink? Wouldn't you think that they would have a way to evac the city, especially considering they had weeks to prepare for it? Just a thought: Maybe Bush waited a week because he didn't need the votes. Maybe it's because it's a predomenently Democratic, Black, bleow-the-poverty-line city. Things to ponder...
Yes. I believe that, somehow, President Bush made a huge blockade stopping people from getting into New Orleans and Biloxi. Somehow it's always his fault. After all, who is our glorious all-knowing all- powerful tyrranic dictator?
Would you consider not allowing other countries to help blockading? And maybe Bush himself wasn't directly blocading it, but somone was. FEMA. Here's an Interview with a Survivor Here's a transcrip if you dont want to watch the heart-wrenching video.
Let me give you just three quick examples. We had Wal-Mart deliver three trucks of water, trailer trucks of water. FEMA turned them back. They said we didn't need them. This was a week ago. FEMA--we had 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on a Coast Guard vessel docked in my parish. The Coast Guard said, "Come get the fuel right away." When we got there with our trucks, they got a word. "FEMA says don't give you the fuel." Yesterday--yesterday--FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice. Our sheriff, Harry Lee, goes back in, he reconnects the line. He posts armed guards on our line and says, "No one is getting near these lines." The guy who runs this building I'm in. Emergency management. He's responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said. Are you coming. Son? Is somebody coming? And he said yeah. Mama. Somebody's coming to get you.. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday. And she drowned Friday night. And she drowned Friday night. Nobody's coming to get us. Nobody's coming to get us. The Secretary has promised. Everybody's promised. They've had press conferences. I'm sick of the press conferences. For god's sakes, just shut up and send us somebody.?Aaron Broussard

Well, this is kind of wierd... My school year started on Wensday. I didn't know where any of my classes were, but when I got my list I was rather oddly surprised. See, during the summer all of the classrooms were moved around for some reason or another. Turns out all my classes this year are in the exact same rooms as I had last year. Of all my friends I'm the only one who had that. I found it pretty sweet because I've got a lot of fond memories from last year.
Ilium, that's a funny way of thinking, you know. Not all people here are below 13 years of age to believe there's a ghost just by hearing a sound in a haunted house. Ghosts do exist. Although, I haven't seen one, a lot of people I know has seen them. They didn't have to lie to me for any reason so I believe them. One of my friends have two ghosts in their house whom they welcome because the ghosts take care of the house. In my religion (and I dunno if I believe it or not), ghosts are not the souls of the dead. They are demons pretending to be the souls of the dead. And they're evil no matter what form they take.
The human imagination works in a funny way. If you went into a deep, dark, scarrrrey woods in the middle of the night and heard some noises and the like you'd probably think nothing of it. But if before hand your told by a lot of people (Like some of those TV Shows) or somthing like that that there are ghosts there definatly, those little noises aren't little noises anymore. The human imagination is a funny thing, it'll blow things out of preportion just because it wants to believe it's true - I know this doesn't apply to everyone but to a lot of people it does, and those are often the ones who speak out about ghosts. Othertimes it's just people making up stuff to get attention: who really knows. Imagine you were in a dark underground complex of some sort. You hear a sort of scrapeing sound but can't figure out where it's coming from - the walls distort the sound and it sounds kind of like a groan. Than lets say there's a window that lets in a little bit of light - this light reflects off of somthing and you catch it out of the corner of your eye at a difficult angle. Now your disconcerted. That noise again - but it's not the same noise, it's definatly a groan this time. You swallow hard. You start to run. Adreniline takes over - wait, what was that light; no time to explore now. You keep running and by now your scared out of your skin. Moral of the story? Simple things under certain enviroments can really change how they're percieved. Hey, maybe I'm making this up - maybe it's only an explination for some of the ghost sitings and maybe it explains all of them, I don't know. But it's how I like to think of it. BTW, if your religion believes in ghosts that's fine. What religion is it? I'm just curious because Pacific religions always intrested me but I never really got into them. Ah, just thought of somthing. If all ghosts are evil than why do two ghosts take care of your friends home?

New Orleans just goes to prove the old addage that no matter how sophisticated you are, your just two days away from anarchy and three meals from canibalism. I mean in supposedly uncivilized countries like Inda or Sri Lanka notihng like this happens. I remember reading first hand accounts of people in India. There were no muggings or shootings or any of that, people were only concerned with helping eachother. Why is it that we supposedly civillized cultures can't just help eachother instead of sniping at med evacs?

Ghosts, Demons, Satyrs, all the rest of em, superstitious mumbonutbo. No truth in em. People see what they wanna see. They go into a place that's supposedly haunted, they hear a sound (Like a sound you hear everywhere) and all of a sudden OMGSHZORZ IT'S A GHOST! RUN AWAY! and in the confusion they think they saw some kind of light which the human imagination turns into a ghost. S'all bull.
Sadly, I almost believe it. But do you have any sources? I've looked around on Google and I can't really find any article that directly says the US is rejecting Canada's aid.
It was a bit dramatized because, well, I was bored. Paul Martin did personally phone Bush as well as several others and offered support, told them DART and tonnes of aide were on standby but Bush apperently turned it down. DART aswell as the rest of the Canadian millitary couldn't move without the permission of the host country - on wednesday, they asked and they didn't get it. I'm happy to hear that finally DART is on the move and will leave by tuesday to help the relife efforts in New Orleans.
Yeah, a lot of our money is being pissed away in Iraq, but what's done is done. It's horrible and somewhat disgusting that we've been watching so much money drain in Iraq, and that preventing us to have better programs in which to help these people, but all we can do is just hope and pray. Bush is trying, it's not like he's sitting around getting a tan somewhere.
Actualy, Bush did spend the rest of the day after the hurricane getting guitar lessons and biking - Condi was at an Eric Idle show and buying new shoes, go figure - guess they call him the Vacation President for a reason... Even with the money being pissed away in Iraq, I gotta wonder what Bush and congress are up to. This basically how the conversation went: Paul Martin: Gee George, I'm really gosh darn sorry to hear about Katrina and the loss of the Big Easy... Is there anything I can do to help? I've got billions of dollars, well-trained rescue personal, tonnes of supplies, Canadians everywhere are just waiting for the request. George Bush: Nahhh I'm good, umm... What was your name again? Ahh it's not important. Well anyway, I could accept DART and JTF2 aide, I could accept the largest cash donation of any nation to date, I could do what I promised and save thousands from the hell that is the Superdome. Buttttttt... nahh. We're the US! We don't need any help from Canadians of all people. My personal ego is much more important than the well-being of the American people. Paul Martin: But George, there are hundreds still trapped on roof tops that have gone without water and food for days, nearly 70,000 people trapped in the Superhell, and not nearly enough National Guardsmen to save them all - I seem to remember a certain conflict their all tied up in. George, ask congress. They'll make the sensible decisions. George Bush: *Snicker Snicker* Okkkk whatever you say. Congressssssssssss... Conservative Congress (Majority): ALL GLORY TO THE VACATION PRESIDENT! Lib Congress (Minority): Well comon, that doesn't sound right! The American people come before the presidents ego! Conservative Congress (Majority): QUIET YOU UNPATRIOTIC HEATHENS! HOW DARE YOU QUESTION OUR PRESIDENT! ALL GLORY TO VACATION PRESIDENT! Lib Congress (Minority): **** it, let them have their ego. I've got five dollars on me, lets go see if we can find some imported beer. Beerbeerbeerbeerbeerbeerbeer... George Bush: Funny what a little money and electroshock can do... Well, anyway... you, we're turning down your aide. *snicker* Oh, while I've got you here, how's the lumber industry do- Ah, sorry, gotta go. My guitar teachers a'callin. Condi'll be right... oh that's right, shoe shoping. Umm... Call back later! Paul Martin: What the **** just happened here? The saddest part is that's the basics of what happened: Canada offered the most aide of any nation and were brushed aside by Bush and the Cons for whatever reason, costing hundreds if not thousands of lives in the process. What's so hard about letting Canada help out? The gov't make to much money screwing us to allow us some leverage? Comon, this is just pathetic on behalf of the Government. Trucks full of aide can only do so much; nothing the US has at home can match the DART or JTF2 for search & rescue prowess and they just laugh in our faces. Pathetic...

Is it possible? I guess, ya. I don't rule it out. But I still don't believe it, as one of the prequsites is to have a belief in God, which I lack. I don't know, I mean originally it was that God created everything, because we didn't know any better. Than all of a sudden we know that we evolved from apes and the story changes to God creating what we evolved out of. It seems to much like 'Uhh... God did that too!', way to superficial to me. So, in answer to the question, no. I think it's a crock. An alternative to evolution? Not a chance. I remember that Bush wanted to supplement teaching intellegent design for teaching evolution, and that's just criminal. First of all, not everyone believes in God, and a significant amount dont believe in the Christian notion of it. Second of all, there is very little supporting evidence and even less common sense supporting it... Seems fake to me.

An arm, a leg and half a foot: the gas price thread
Lafleur replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Well, my mom said that the gas prices were going up to 1.50/lieter in town, 1.80 in Montreal. There is aprox 4 lieters to a US gallon - apperently there is a difference between American gallons and regular gallon, go figure - so the whole time I thought that it was 3 lieters to a gallon, I thought the US was getting screwed; now that I know we've been paying what they're paying now... the only thing I can say is 'Bloody hell...' -
This is New Orleans we're talking about here people. I don't know if you've never been, but it basically has a history for being an extremely shady place. I don't think vehicles were literally being tossed around. I'd have to guess it takes more than 160mph wind to do that. I don't really know since I'm too lazy to check.
Shady, yea. But shooting at Med Evacs? That's just... wtf? One of my friends aunts worked in one of the hospitals along the river until recently when she was rescued, but they've been working tirelessly to keep 350 critical patients from dieing, literally keeping them alive with manual lung-pump thingies. One of the nurses went out to get a breath of air and was attacked and robbed. I know the Big Easy has a history... but... Even if New Orleans isn't a great place, DART or JTF2 could really be of help there; DART and JTF2 are two of the most well trained urban combat and rescue squads around and not even a request has been made. What's the government thinking? Well, a class-4 hurricane is like having a tsunami for 12 hours; so cars could have very likely been thrown around, but I don't know of any.
-
The **** is really hitting the fan in the Big Easy. Lootings abound, there are snipers - SNIPERS - shooting at medical evacuation vechials, and the evac plans are a mess. Bush is yet to even issue a official request for aide to help quell the violent uprisings and evac the survivors - Canada's DART teams are on standby but no request has come. It really could be an awful long time before any progress is made in New Orleans at this rate, especially with looting and armed criminals on the rise (See: Two Wal-Marts found robbed of all guns and ammunition) many more could die before the whole thing is worked out.

They should do Survivor: Siberia. THAT I'd watch. By the fourth frost-bite amputation they'd have everyone with a TV watching. As for the current Survivor trends, meh.
I can link you to a website that says that New Orleans deserved it because they're all queers down there. I bet both of these statements are equally valid. The gas prices really shouldn't be too high for a while. A lot of the high prices is due to the refineries being shut down due to the hurricane. In a month or so the prices should decrease.
First off, it all depends who you believe. A bunch of radicalists with too much freespeach (Specifically the GHF nuts) or a decently credible source. It's no secret that a lot of money that would have otherwise been spent on social development back in the US was pissed away in Iraq; things deemed unncessessary at the time were first to go, including the money budgeted to repair the Leevies. With the gas, it all depends. The Gas companies aren't exactly known for their honesty. I mean, remember when the Gas prices spike pre-war? They claimed it was because Oil was becoming for scarce and costing more to find, but they were recording MASSIVE increases in profit; who's to say they won't pull similar **** here and just keep the prices high and invent something to explain it away? Probably worst case scenario, but possible. Probably be a bloody revolt if it happened though :/
