Killzone - Dubbed a "Halo Killer" (56kers be careful)

A while back (a few months) the SCEA announced "Killzone" (originally code named "Kin"), which was soon after dubbed a "Halo Killer". The "Halo Killer" news is good to me, since I loved Halo, but I doubt I'll [i]ever[/i] buy an X-box.

So far it's looking quite nice, though the story is a bit cliche. In the (near) future, the human race is trying to colonize the galaxy. But it doesn't go to well when a war breaks out between Helghast and the ISA. You play as agent of the ISA, so far 26 levels have been confirmed. It will be a squad-based game, which is a little differen't for console shooters.

I'm pretty exited about it, and any self respecting PS2 owner/FPS should too.

[COLOR=darkblue]Those shots look impressive. That motion blur better only be in the cutscenes.

The main things that I am looking for in something that will be called a 'halo killer' is any weapon pickup, mountable machinery (turrets, tanks, jeeps, etc), co-op story mode, and very fast gameplay.

I hope the developers implement these elements into Killzone.[/COLOR]

I don't know. What I've read and seen about it over the last few months makes it sound like it's geared for mulitplayer and not singleplayer... which kills some of my interest already.

I'll have to try it out obviously... but FPS games on PS2 are never enjoyable for me, as I don't feel the sticks work well enough. Hopefully they'll include mouse and keyboard support. That would be great.

People have brought this up before, but the character designs are practically ripped straight out of Jin-Roh.

I read an article over on IGN that commented on how it could topple Halo and what not. Well, it may be able to do it if the SP holds up, but, the fact of the matter is Halo over XBox Live is king in the MP world. Unless the online service for the PS2 can compete with XBox Live, then Killzone will not beat out Halo, nor Half-Life 2 for the PC.

Other than that, I think it is a very impressive looking game, especially because of the PS2's limited power (with respect to GC and XBox). So, if it runs well, plays well, and sucks me in, you will have a guaranteed purchaser. ;)

Halo isn't officially even online for Xbox. You have to connect it through a PC through a tunnel. It's not really the same experience. Halo 2 is another matter.

From what I understand, this game can utilize voice communication, among other things. So it's not really on the short side of the stick.

Yes, that was my main de-turn when reading articles about this game. Everything else looks simply stunning though.

I'd never heard the Jin-Roh comparison, so I looked up some shots on google. That is a pretty big rip off, but in all honesty I'd rather have them rip off something cool than create something stupid.

Killzone - [img]http://ps2media.ign.com/ps2/image/killzone_080103_01.jpg[/img]

Jin-Roh - [img]http://www.rightstuf.com/images/large_images/ge1770.jpg[/img]

Now I need to check out Jin-Roh. =P

Jin-Roh is very cool, if you're willing to give it a chance. The first half is slow, but I thought the second half was simply excellent stuff. I fell asleep on it three seperate times before I decided enough was enough and I should just finish it all. The second half was really worth it.

I guess the game could have goofy looking rednecks or something. It's been done before in Redneck Rampage, so it's not out of the question lol . At least they look good heh.

I believe it's not limited to cut scenes or anything. I'm sure it's an effect that's utilized in real time.

I've noticed many games practicing the soft look--even in genres where it's quite out of place. Nevertheless, some titles make good use of it. Ico is a prime example. It made up for the decidedly simplistic look and gave everything a dreamy, pretty, look. If I had to guess, I'd say it's one of the programming tricks the developers are using to make up for the aging PS2 processor. The textures might otherwise look muddy.

Whether a first person shooter can pull it off sans nausea remains to be seen, I suppose.

being a huge FPS fan I think that Killzone looks VERY good. and the motion blur, if used properly (not in mass quantities) can be a very cool effect...just look at Devil may Cry that had a touch of motion blur here and there and it's a game that other action games are judged by. but anyway here are a few more screens.

even if this wasn't dubbed "halo killer" It'd still peak my interest , but don't expect it anytime soon. It's release date is still unknown even in europe (it's being released there first) and it's unknown if it will even be ported to the US.

edit: try that, I removed the image tags.

If it does not work when clicking, right-click, copy shortcut, then paste in your browser.

:)

VERY sweet pictures! I guess the PS2 does have some untapped juice to rock some awesome looking games (assuming those are all in-game)!
