Most controversial Anime

Media wise, it's Death Note. It's been banned in countries such as China/Hong Kong, I believe. Personally, I think it's Battle Royale (not an anime, but the manga is very graphic) or any of Yuki Kaori's manga. She includes themes like incest, self harming, male prostitution; very human, but these topics are generally considered quite taboo in society.
Hi,
Im new to this site but I would like to get everyones opinions on what anime they think was the most provoking and controversial. So far the anime I think is on the top of the list is Elfen Lied. The way they did things was very convaluded, I understood what theme they were trying to make a little but still...
I'd say that Elfen Lied is the most controversial, though most people I talk to about it just think that it's violent. They seem to just pass by the whole back story of the little girl (I can't remember her name for the life of me right now) and the molestation that happened to her. Plus, though some may not find this to bad, there is the whole incestuous relationship between Kota and Yuka. There is also the animal abuse and child abuse, nudity and whatever else I'm forgetting. So that takes number one for me. Another anime that's pretty provocative is Angel Sanctuary, which was short, lasting only three episodes, it was heavy on the incestuous relation ship between Setsuna and Sara Mudo, who are siblings in love. Plus the whole church theme, Setsuna being the reincarnation of the organic angel Alexial and Sara being the reincarnation of the angel of water Jibril. It became really dark near the end, but I liked it. If you want to know where to get this, if your interested, just look it up on Veoh.com. Also, there is Eiken, which was hilarious. I think that's the only anime I can think of.:catgirl:
Well for me I got to say it was sailor moon. The way they had incorporated jupiter as a tom boy who ends up having feelings for uranus was a surprise to alot of us over in USA. And not to mention the last season with the trio who are disguised as a boyband but are actually sailor stars! And to top it off the main girl falls for uasgi.. Weird* . It might not seem too awkward now but back then most of us were around what? like 10 or 12 years old, we were a little shocked.
Yeah, can't have Jupiter sodomizing Uranus, that would hurt.:catgirl:

...Okay, I realize this post is a few months old, but eh?!

I don't recall Makoto ever having feelings for Haruka. Yeah, her [I think] and Minako did...before they realized she was a chick. Do some more research next time, ne?

Now that I'm done talking to something not even there...

In today's day and age in society, I do agree that Death Note has some controversy. Banned in China, and some other places I don't know of...and some yut here in the States pulled something not too long ago, IIRC.

But really, as anime as a whole is starting to become more and more mainstream, I worry we'll see more and more people construing the truth and thinking all anime is violent porn...well, outside of the small minority that already are convinced of that.

...oh, wait, I forgot, that's already happened.

Although, honestly? I doubt we'll ever see anything as controversial as Pokemon was back in the good ol' says. I heard it called everything from enslaving children to the occult, promoting Buddhism, being "demon seeds", promoting cock fighting...the list is endless.

Oh, and for all the people saying how Elfen Lied is controversial...wow. Just wow. I don't deny it's a good bloodfest with boobies, but seriously, there's so much worse. Although I guess to the unknowing, "normal" person, they wouldn't realize that.

Not to mention Usagi had an underage relationship with Mamoru. But then again, most anime/manga have frequent mentioning of child porn /pedophilia. In Japan, it's culturally accepted to draw these types of things.(but just not actually do it to an actual child) Whereas the US has more strained morals while Japan's are looser.

There are so many ways I could object to this statement. For starters, any actual pornographic material, drawn or otherwise, is censored whether you like it or not over there (as I understand it.) Here, you can pick up a Playboy at any old gas station and the only censorship (as I understand it) would be the black bar on the plastic wrapping covering the cover.

In Japan, children are like the center of the world. In America, they're the reason you can't go partying Friday night anymore. (This is a sarcastic example, but you probably already knew that.)

In conclusion, never claim that another government's morals are "looser" without adequate evidence. Odds are they're just different.

Guest Crimson Spider
The most controversial anime that I have seen has been Neon Genesis Evangelion. In the beginning things are good and all that, but towards the end they just get weird. It quit making sense to me at the last episodes. I eventually learned that I wasn't the only one; I heard that the writers/director of Evangelion eventually received death threats in the mail to make a better ending, which eventually lead to the movie.

Basing the term "controversial" on content alone...

I know Angel Sanctuary has already been mentioned in here, due to the brother/sister incest storyline, plus how Kaori Yuki plays with the traditional Heaven & Hell ideas (which would obviously be controversial to people who are of strong Christian belief).

One I read about some time ago that would definitely fall under this definition is Boku wa Imouto ni Koi o Suru, which translates to "I'm in Love with My Little Sister". No points for guessing how that could be controversial.

I don't know if anyone has seen "Jungle de Ikou" but it seems to be nothing but a showcase for the main character's large breasts. The storyline (which is horrible) revolves around them. Each character talks about them almost non-stop. However this is no nudity, but just the suggestion of sexuality, like James Bond films.

"Through a very bouncy, sexy and jiggly dance, Natsumi can transform into the voluptuous Mii, a spirit of flowers, fertility, and reproduction. Her gigantic breasts are said to represent and contain Earth's life-giving energy. In addition, her already humongous breasts grow larger yet as Mii increases in maternal strength. Mii can also enlarge her whole body to giant size when needed.
Mii's other powers include temporarily increasing her breast size, making her entire body grow, reflecting projectiles off her chest or absorbing them into her cleavage, as well as extreme muscular strength needed to carry her absolutely enormous breasts around without hurting her back or tipping over forward. Usually, men are not able to look at Mii's face because of her big boobs."

Controversial?..Depends what you mean by 'controversial'. Anyways heres a list of animes i think to be controversial.

Death Note- I agree with what people have said so far for this one so im not going to add much more to this one but it does reffer to alot of things from the bible, e.g. I have a picture of light reaching out and giving ryuk an apple, i think this was taken from a very famous painting, also when L washes lights feet, aparently thats a refference from the bible too. Then they add lots of people dieing and in my country theyve labled the movies as a 15 o.o when i bought them i was asked for id and proof of age (more or less id with your D.O.B on it...)

Naruto- just a little mention to the 'gore' (aparently it has lots of this to label the anime a 12 were i live -.- they also dont show it until 9:30 pm, after the water shed) and Hidan's swearing. If u read volumes 36 and 37 you'll see that all the swearing has been censored, i mean, come on! they kept it un-cencored everywere else why censor it for countries besides Japan :(. I was reading some of Hidans speeches and theyre all messed-up now (he sounds like a gentle man...), also with all the religious reffrences in there with him too.

Higurashi- Probably one of the most violent animes next to elfen lied and school days. Aparently it was so violent they cancelled it due to a murder case (same with school days). To save me time ill copy the stuff about the case from wikipedia:
"The day before the final episode was scheduled to air, a sixteen-year-old girl killed her father with an axe in Kyoto. In response, TV Kanagawa replaced the episode, which was known to contain similarly violent material, with half an hour of scenery and classical music to avoid association with the murder."
BTW that was copied from school days on the wiki but its more or less the same story, if u watch this you'll notice that the OP was changes too.

Dont even get me started on poptan, remember 'caramelldansen'?

But all in all, it depends what you mean by 'controversial'... BTW i could go one for deckades but ill stop here..

I dunno so much about higurashi as controversial. yeah, it's got lots of murders, that's about it. in my eyes, something being controversial means it promotes doing the morally criminal, and higurashi is about the misery and problems that comes with these crimes, rather than just the crimes themselves, which is why i like it. and yes, popotan was pretty bad. thanks for mentioning that one. you should look into kodomo no jikan, as i mentioned earlier.
