Homosexual anime?

There's a whole world of shonen-ai, shojo-ai, yaoi, and yuri. Unfortunately, a lot of it is mostly for fanservice value (that, and I'm against the genres of yaoi and yuri because they're pornagraphic). However, there are a lot of good animes that have homosexual characters/undertones/overtones in them.

Shinji/Kawrou is one of the few shippings I actually support. Try watching Neon Genesis Evangelion. The gay stuff is minimal, but it's still there and is very important to the character development at the end of the series.

I admittedly haven't seen much of Utena outside of bits and pieces (I'm intending to start watching the series as a whole tonight, Dagger!), but it has some pretty heavy lesbian themes in it (moreso than in Evangelion). That might be what you're looking for.

Azumanga Daioh (one of the funniest animes of all time) has Kaorin, the crazy fangirl who is in love with Miss Sakaki. Some of her scenes are pretty funny.

Samurai Champloo makes a crapload of jokes about the prominence of homosexuality in ancient Japan and (while it might not be what you're looking for) Cowboy Bebop has a 2-parter concerning a transsexual character (who's in my avatar) as well as the hacker-of-ambigious-gender Edward Wong bunchamiddlenames The Third.

It's Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV. There's an anime called Loveless, but it is shota(adult men attracted to boys who are younger/not legal). Personally, I have no problem with shonen/shojo ai, boys love, yaoi or yuri.

If you don't like homosexual anime, why do you want to know about them?

GoldScorpion78, please pick just one signature image; I don't want to have to make the choice for you. Thanks. :)

Speaking for myself, silver_blade, I wouldn't call Loveless shota (your definition of the word is also a bit off, heh). But this argument's been debated to death already, so I guess I'll just leave it at that.

Woohoo! You're either going to love it or totally hate me for recommending it... :animesmil

Warning: Long post ahead. And a quick note about terminology--I'm going to call shounen-ai/yaoi "BL" (boys' love) and shoujo-ai/yuri just plain "yuri." Both are terms that can cover everything from outright porn to stuff in which the characters don't even hold hands. That said...

Someone who has started with Gravitation might as well watch Mirage of Blaze and Descendants of Darkness. For a while, they (along with Gravitation) were the only significantly BL-ish anime out in America, and fans seemed to gravitate toward them as some kind of holy trinity. Pun intended; don't hit me. After that, move onto something far superior: Loveless, which also has yuri. However, be warned that if you're going to watch this, you will end up needing to read the manga--it's one of those series.

If you're desperate for more, try Sukisho. Personally, I have a lot of problems with it (but at the very least, it's much better than Gakuen Heaven, the most recent anime to be adapted from a BL game).

The truth is, though, if you're looking for BL, manga is the way to go. There are tons and tons of BL series about to start coming out over here (not to mention all the ones that are already being sold). Several BL-dedicated lines have been created by various companies, including Be Beautiful (mostly explicit), Blu (covers a range from fairly innocuous to much more explicit) and June (ditto). To learn more, I recommend checking out this Manga Workshop thread. Pick a random page, read backwards, start from the beginning, or just make a post asking for recommendations... it's up to you. Even if, as you say, you don't like it. ;)

The situation is almost the opposite with yuri. You'd be hard-pressed to find any yuri manga over here (and compared to the number of BL series, there aren't all that many yuri titles in Japan, either). On the other hand, more and more yuri anime are being made nowadays.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito and Kannazuki no Miko pretty much have to be mentioned--despite the fact that, frankly, I didn't care much for either of them. Devil Lady is a lot better. For something more elegant and more based in subtext, go with both seasons of Maria-sama ga Miteru (or Oniisama E, aka Brother, Dear Brother).

As for newer shows, Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl is fairly well liked, but you have to work past the fact that the main character is a boy who gets permanently transformed into a girl (not a spoiler). And two highly anticipated yuri anime started airing in Japan a few days ago: Simoun and Strawberry Panic. The jury's still out on them, I suppose, but the former sure seems a heck of a lot better than the latter.

For the moment, I stuck mainly to mentioning yuri/BL series in which the yuri/BL content is either an obvious focus or present in the form of a major canon relationship.

Shonen-ai and Shojo-ai are mainly fan based but there are a lot of them that aren't. Their almost as popular in Japan as straight animes. I personally fine some of them enjoyable and fun to watch. I'm not the type of fan who'd take animes with a boy and a gril, and write something with that boy with another boy or the girl with another girl, but if the creator writes it like that, then I'm fine with it.

I think shonen-ai in Gravitation is completely fine, but taking, whats a popular one? Oh, Sasuke and Naruto from Naruto is a bit much. Other then one scene, there are no huge shonen-ai hints. Yet it's still rivaled to NaruHina ans SasuSaku in popularity.

Some shonen-ai couples can be completely adorable. And they aren't just designed in Japan wher homosexualty isn't odd, they can be designed here too. One of the best shonen-ai American comics is Off Beat.

Um, actually homosexuality is about as common in Japan as it is in America, and in Japan it actually is more kept in the closet. They don't really have any powerful right-wing fundamentalist groups against homosexuality, but on the other hand they don't seem to have made quite as much progress in the gay rights movement. It happens to show up in anime and manga a lot, but if you were to judge America by most of the movies we put out you'd think America was a country based off of repetition, idiots, blood and guts, and anorexic chicks (oh wait, that's not too far off from the truth...).

If we compiled a list now, I don't think it'd ever end. Besides all the obvious yaoi/shounen-ai/yuri/shoujo-ai titles like, as were mentioned, Gravitation and Yami No Matsuei, there are countless series that have innuendos at the very least. Pretty much anything by CLAMP has such: Legal Drug, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Chobits, to name a few. There's some jokes in DNAngel on it, there's Kaorin's obsession with Sakaki in Azumanga Daioh, and heck, there's even a quick one-liner (one I hardly even caught) in the ridiculously immature Hare + Guu. The fact is, homosexuality is a big theme in anime, one that a lot of writers can't help but either implement or poke fun at. Face it. People who create like making fun of their fans. This whole topic is just a fact of otaku life.

There were actually 2 cases. The one your talking about,
Gren, who technically is a male, just with an increased estrogen count due to experimentation (as said already) he developed breasts. And when Spike is looking for "Julia" he is directed to a transvestite prostitute named Julius. It wasen't as big of a part but it defintly freaked Spike out.
.

As for the concept in general, i find it to be uninteresting because of 2 major reasons; 1. I am a comfortably straight male who does not enjoy watching anything involving homosexual actions though at the same time respect the preference of others to be homosexual as well as the potential interest others may have in it and 2. I would rather watch an anime that can deliver an awesome story with other aspects without a strong aubundance of sexual contents to distract attention from the central storyline.

I for one will take sailor mars and venus on top of each other over Spike bent over a chair any day...though i ultimatley perfer my animes to be non-sex based. The obligatory love story or sexual tensoin that fits in well and dosen't culminate over the course of 2 minutes of an episode is fine, it's an important aspect of animes IMO...even a sex scene or two as a result of whatever...but not every single episode.

Did nobody notice V.T. from the episode Heavy Metal Queen? He looked like a man, but
at the end Spike finds that picture of him as a woman with his husband. He was a female-to-male transsexual. That was the point everyone trying to guess what V.T. stood for - He didn't use his full name anymore because it was a woman's name (Victoria something, I don't remember).
EDIT: Oops, spoiler tags added.

At the beginning he was wearing an open shirt. Anyway, there's no proof that the prostitute was actually transsexual either, instead of just a man dressed up as a woman.

Something I forgot to mention, Gren doesn't count because he wasn't actually trying to be/look like a woman. There are men who grow breasts naturally due to hormonal problems, that doesn't make them transsexual.

Well a transexual is usually defined as a human with both gender's genetalia, so in a way that's true. Needless to say it wasn't a natural hormonal increase though.

I'd have to recommend Peace Maker Kurogane. While they never outright say they're gay, or have any openly gay scenes, you just get that vibe from Souji and Hijikata. It's an undertone, and not the main point of the series, mostly just implied/hinted at (up to Episode 12 where I am, anyway. Please correct me if I'm wrong! ^_^; ), but it's just so darn cute ^__^ Not to mention all the guys in the Shinsengumi that pick on poor Tetsu and call him puppy-kun because he's so adorable XD

Actually, that was who I had in mind when I asked, I just figured, you know, manly looking woman. xD
But now that I think about it, that was the first episode I ever watched. Then I saw the movie.

Also transvestites & transsexuals = not the same.
hermaphrodites have both male and female genitals, transsexual means: having or wanting to have a SRS (sexual reassignment surgery, AKA sex change)
At least that's the current definition.

And finally, true, about the whole Gren not counting as a transsexual. You can't be forced into it.

Oh, and BKStyles, a chair is too flimsy. A pool table would be better. ;)

Actually no it's not. Just taking the opposite sex hormones enough for there to be changes qualifies you as transsexual, surgery's not required (I know this because I am one).

I am too. FTM pre-hormones, pre-op.
But I suppose there are several different definitions, either way, it's not the same as a hermaphrodite.

Anyway, as far as "homosexual anime" goes, what about VanDread? It's pretty moderate, no hard-core stuff as far as I know, but still.

Okay. My friend loves guy gays. Don't ask me why.But she done some research and found three gay anime series. Gravitation, which I already knew about before she told me, Gakuen Heaven, and Pap to Kiss is the Dark. Gravitation to me is pretty cool. Gakuen Heaven is okay to me. And Papa to Kiss the Dark is scary.

Papa to Kiss is theDark is about a boy who gets adopted by his uncle and ends up falling in love with him. It's creepy. I can never image a boy who falls on love with his uncle. I'm going to have nightmares for life.

What u think about these gay anime?

I think that since we already have a thread discussing homosexual/gay anime, it?s better to combine them to avoid confusion. For future reference Alannie it?s a good idea to check the first couple of pages of threads in a section to see if the topic you wish to discuss already exists. If you have any questions feel free to pm myself or another member of the staff. ~indifference

Gakuen Heaven and Papa to Kiss are pure unadulterated trash. Honestly, Gakuen Heaven makes Sukisho look like a work of genius, and seeing Papa to Kiss gave me the urge to go wipe my mind with some good old-fashioned hentai. It really was that awful, and I'm not even referring to the lame faux-incest. :animesigh

As for Gravitation, I like it well enough, but y'all probably knew that already.

I'm sorry but i really, don't understand why you have a problem with yaoi, yuri or other homosexual anime. :animeangr and frankly i am kind of annoyed and it. I am a girl and i do like yaoi, shota, hentai, and i can withstand yuri, but i am not a fan of it.

But if you say you don't like gay anime, then is it fair that a gay person says they don't like straight anime?

and most of the anime around is not yaoi, the only few yaoi anime that are around are, Sensitive porngraphy,Legend of the four horseman and enzai, they may be more but they are the ones i know of at the moment. The rest are shouen Ai, which means they are slashy or they just contain kissing or a hug.(for example sukisko and gravitation).

But if you get any gay mangas then it's different. I mean if you don't like it then don't watch it, no one is forcing you too :animeswea.

I just don't think it's fair that you only know of one yaoi anime and yet your assuming that all yaoi or yuri anime are like that. I also think that it is very wrong of you to say that you don't really know why is it created, Yaoi and yuri are just like hentai for fangrils or boys, yaoi and yuri doujinshi more then anything.

I mean, have you ever thought, 'I wonder what would happen if kaworu did sleep with shinji' or 'i wonder what would happen if melfina did fall in love with gene and they when further into things'.

and frankly if you watch hentai, then you shouldn't judge any yaoi, because yaoi is mostly created mostly for a female or gay genre, which is the same pupose that hentai has apart from it has a different target audience.

But as i have said if you don't like yaoi or yuri don't watch it, but do not put it down for being a 'gay anime', when you don't even know what it's about.

Im just going to nit pick for a second. At the end of episode 14 Gren
posses as a woman to trick Vicious
. So in that case he was trying to look like a woman. But I understand what you meant

it just pisses me off, i am a yaoi fan and i have been a yaoi, shouen Ai and shota fan for 7 years and to hear all these people slag off yaoi and yuri, when the only yaoi anime they know is gravatition and FAKE is a bit out of order.

Again i understand if people don't like, i also understand that many people get offend by anime such as gravatition,FAKE, Sukisko and so on. That is the same with me, i like shota, but there is a hell of a lot of people who do not like shota, and i am fine with that. But what annoys me is they don't even know what a shota is, Papa kiss in the dark and Loveless are both shotas. I would just like people to research more into the subject, rather then just say 'i don't like it cos it has homosexual material in it', there normally is more to a boy love anime then sex :animeswea apart from SP of course ¬_¬...
