To the second part: I'm going to have to disagree with your comparisson. I would say it's more likely that aliens exist than it is i'll trip on the sidewalk. This is because i do not ever trip. I have perfect balance. BEAT THAT LOGIC! :smirk:
Famous last words, I'm afraid. In fact, you're more likely to trip than we are to see Aliens. If you're saying you've never tripped before in your life, you're either A) Lying or B) Lying. That's just arrogant.
To the first part of this: We actually do have the resources to prove whether creatures live on any given planet or not. We can look at them. If we see some little space-kittens running around then we can conclude that life does exist on said planet. But you are right in saying we cannot disprove (with 100% certainty) whether any life is on any given planet. This is purely because it's difficult to disprove a negative... or prove a negative? Yes... prove a negative. Because you can say, well life isn't on the surface of this planet, but you don't know whether there's any life underneath or anywhere else. So yeah... you got it half right.
You're being awfully condescending here. There is no plausible way we can prove things just by pure image alone.Even with our sophisticated techonological advances in aeronautics, we have yet to prove any signs of sentient life or life at all in our immediate solar system. I find it highly doubtful we will find life on these planets if we haven't found anything within the 40+ years we've been at it.
Crimson Spider Your discussion on probability really wasn't necessary. When i used the word i was using its colloquial definition. I wasn't going for anything as formal as probability based on mathematics... which i admittedly know little about. The argument, "I think there must be life other than our own somewhere in the universe because it's so vast," is valid as long as its not meant to be a logical argument to prove the existence of aliens. It's only a speculation giving a speculative conjecture to back up and justify an opinion.
I don't find that statement the least bit un-patronizing. If any argument or discussion should be had, it should be done where people don't discredit others opinion outright, but instead appeal to logic or simple fact. From what I can gather, it seems that anyone else's opinion is immediately discredited by yourself. I kindly disagree with such practices. Now I take the high road out. Aliens existing? I have my doubts. In this isolated niche of the universe that we live in, we simply do not have the resources at the time to either prove or disprove creatures live on other planets. The same can be said of religious phenomena. There is no proof either way showing that these events have ever happened or not. All we have is a collective belief on one side or the other. Is there a probability of aliens existing? Yeah, same as there is a probability of you walking down the street and you trip and fall. Anything's possible, but it's all up in uncertainty land at the moment.

Eclipsed Dreamer, we are having a discussion here and I would appreciate it if we kept it that way. We're not personally attacking your theory, we're just finding it silly. Little difference in opinion never hurt anyone. You're certainly entitled to thing that the government is trying something, as we are entitled to thinking it's silly. For discussion's sake, let's keep it civil. ;) Sure I'm a little curious as to the different media forms, but I'm more concerned about how the government is going to keep people from exploiting this coupon system. I hope it doesn't fare the same way our American welfare is faring at the moment....

Sparring with Grace was definitely a different experience. Her movements rang true to her moniker, full of grace and fluditiy. I matched her movements with my own. I threw moves at her, but I didn't make contact with her, because I knew that this was just play fighting and I didn't want to accidently hurt her. We moved around the yard, tossing out moves at each other. All this time I was content. Not my brother, me. I was always thinking it was my brother's consciousness doing the work whenever I fought, but this was all my doing. I wasn't upset, I wasn't happy. I was just content with my body. Grace threw a spinning back kick and I nimbly dodged it and tried to punish her for missing such a big move by moving in closer but to my surpise, her face was right where I had intended to be. I stopped dangerously close from her lips, and found myself staring at her eyes. Those deep pools that were aged with the experiences of life. For someone so young, Grace had been through a lot. I didn't utter a word, didn't pull back. I just stared. I couldn't think of anything. Thankfully I was saved by the sound of Carol's voice. "Ok you two, enough making out in the backyard," She teased, "Dinner is ready." I turned away, grabbed my shirt and walked back into the house. Grace stood there, bewildered by what just happened. As I made my way into the kitchen I saw Carol finishing up setting the table and an elder woman sitting at the table staring off into the distance. I went to say something but Eros interupted me before I could utter anything. "Best not to say anything to her right now. She's in her zone right now. She can get quite violent if you interrupt her. She'll talk to you later. Come, sit down over here" Eros motioned to a chair on the opposite side of the table. This was surreal, sitting down for dinner with people who had just tried to attack me not even 3 hours before. Carol set the dishes down on the table and I sat down and offered to help her, but Carol smiled and waved me off. "You're our guest. Let us take care of you for now, sweetie." The maternal sound in Carol's voice reminded me of my own mother. My mom might have been one of the only people who didn't judge me for who I was. Even if I didn't have any friends or wasn't involved in any activities, my mom was supportive of me and always greeted me with a smile on her face. I haven't the slightest clue how she put with me all of those years before she died of lung cancer, but I could see that in Carol. Grace came into the kitchen and took her spot to the right of the older woman on the opposite side of the table from me. Eros took a spot next to me and Carol sat down to the left of the older woman. "Shouldn't we..." I stammered out before Carol interrupted me. "She's coming, I can hear her coming down the steps." Yamiko strolled into the Kitchen with a cautious look on her face and sat down next to Grace. Carol bobbed her head and held out her hands, in which she linked her hands with the older woman and Eros. Even if the world was going crazy, it was good to know that people still tried to believe in some sort of divine body. I bobbed my head in respect and took Eros's hand. Then the elderly woman spoke for the first time. ""Dear Lord, thank You for this meal we are about to receive. We ask that Your divine Providence continues to keep us safe from the hell that has been unleashed upon Your Kingdom. Keep us safe from further harm as we continue to sing Your praises and worship You alone. In your Son's name we pray, Amen."" "Amen" The crowd replied in unison. Amen, indeed.

Government conspiracy theories? First I've heard of them. I don't think that the government is trying to mandate thought by telling us to use digital instead of analog transmission. Someone's been watching too many "robots take over because of the vast quantity of technology being developed" sort of movies/ shows. There are far worse cases of the media itself trying to program thought, which is why I no longer watch the National News Stations such as CNN, Headline News, or Fox News. When media decides to throw in politics instead of just reporting the news, that's far worse than big brother trying to get everyone on the technological ball. It's kind of silly when you think about it. Personally I have Digital Cable and mine works flawlessly. I've had only one minor issue and that was when our entire cable network went down in our house. One quick call to the Cable company and it was fixed. That'd be the only problem, I guess...would be the tech crashing on us. Digital media forms tend to do that some times.

You're not fooling me, milady. Hmm I love lots of people but a lot of it isn't the kind of love you get from a relationship. But if we have to list people... My parents- Through all the bad times and the good, they've stuck by me and supported me 100%. My parents are my heroes, especially my Mom. No offense to my Dad, but when you are a military wife who has to deal with her husband being deployed several times while you're raising 3 kids, you will become some sort of strong. I hope I can be at least half as good at parenting as they are. My friends- I know it sounds mushy, but I do really love my friends. From my friends locally to my friends I've met through online or through traveling, I do love them. They know I wouldn't try anything with them, but the love is still there. I wouldn't trade my friends for any others. My girlfriend- Through all the drama that my ex put me through, it's nice to have someone that loves you unconcditionally. Who says your past isn't what shapes their opinion of you. Who says that you're their hero and proclaims it publicly. For the giant goofball she is, my girlfriend is the person I love more than most things. She's easily one of the reasons I take pleasure in life. I love talking to her on the phone, sending her little messages online, getting her things....it's just so fun to be with her.

Methinks that you have not researched the problem enough. No one is "forcing" anyone to have anything. I know people who don't have the telly period. To be honest, I don't watch much TV to begin with. However, the reason why all stations will be broadcast in digital is twofold. 1) It's cheaper to produce now than Analog signals. Almost every new TV that is made has Digital capabilities. With the advent of cable television, getting more TV stations is simple and relatively cheap now-a-days. Broadcasting in both formats is a waste of resources that could be spent elsewhere, such as making existing television better. 2) It's actually better than Analog signals. Why someone still uses analog is beyond me, but digital is cleaner, easier to broadcast and more can be done with it. It's just overall better in everyway. Hope that clears it up for you.

I've been working on Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past recently and it's been fun going back and re-playing one of my favorite games. It's been interesting getting back into the game, because I've been using my keyboard as opposed to a SNES controller and it takes some getting used to. I've been watching Desbreko's videos to see general things and make sure I don't miss any cool items or treasures. That normally happens with me, I beat an RPG story wise and then I go back to it later and find all the nifty items I would have normally missed because I was too focused on beating the game.

I'll play devil's prosecutor here and just point out what people have said and bring up the original post.
Where were you on September 11th, 2001? When did you hear the news? What did you feel?
Now I'm pressing this because I didn't see a need for people to say it was inevitable for us to be attacked. This was my expression when that was said. How can you say that innocent people that had nothing to do with our government's workings and "world police" status in the world deserved to die? These weren't soldiers, politicians, figureheads. These were INNOCENT CIVILIANS. Unarmed, innocent people trying to make a living and were targeted by terrorist cells. How can you say that we deserved that? That statement just bleeds of ignorance. Who cares if people got fed up with it? The fact is that innocent people died. My neighbor didn't do anything to offend our fellow humans in the middle east. Neither did I. Neither did you. So let's stop the "we had it coming talk" with no real reason to justify it. It's ignorant and is almost a blatant slap in the face to Americans who didn't deserve to die because of actions our government takes. Moving on... I was in my 7th grade Humanities class when the news broke to me. We watched it on the TV and I was just in awe of what happened. I couldn't ascertain it all that moment. I didn't know who attacked us, and why it happened. I thought it was a mere accident at first, but that was cleared up for me real quick. It is truly a shame that these people had to die so needlessly. I'm glad that no one in my family was hurt and my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones in those areas.

I carefully studied our newfound visitor. She had a hint of danger about her, as to say that she had been through some sort of trauma within her life. I might not be a living sonar device like Carol, or a human bloodhound like Grace, but I was good at observing people. I had done that for most of my life, sat from far away and observed people as they passed by, living their lives. The moms running after their kids screaming their names as the kids laughed while leading their moms on a wild goose chase that inevitably ended up with them being caught. The couples swooning all over each other and showering each other with kisses and other public displays of affection. The various animals that would get the food scraps left over from discarded leftovers found in trash cans, you get the point. I saw the girl twitch and knew she was plotting something. I didn't wait for the others to make a move. I immediately walked over to her and she lunged at me,with a knife that was previously lodged in the door drawn. I immediately pushed her aside and tripped her, using her forward momentum to my advantage. I stood in my stance, ready for her to get up and attack again. At this point I wasn't thinking like myself, this was my brother all in control. He was a master of Wu Shu, and while it was a performance martial art...my brother knew how to apply it to self-defense. Our new found intruder picked herself up off the floor and began to circle me, looking for an opening in my defense. Although it was probably pointless of her to attack me, seeing as she would immediately be gunned down , the others stood and watched me work, perhaps ascertaining what skills I possessed. I wasn't going to wait all day for her to attack me, I needed to disable her so that we could get whatever info we needed from her and move on. I started to move in and she swiped at me with the knife, missing by mere centimeters. I could feel the air moving off of the blade. I waited until she became predictable and immediately swept her off her feet. She dropped the knife upon landing on the hardwood floor and I raised my foot above my head and sent it flying back down in an axe kick. I don't hold back when I fight, especially when my life's on the line. Gender made no difference to me. I'd been fighting for my life enough to not care about killing my opponent or not. When you're fighting Eaters to save your own life, you have to develop a killer instinct. The blow came down with an impressive thud as my heel crashed into my opponents stomach. I felt her stomach muscles cave in as the blow hit, and with a gasp she fell unconscious. Trying to kill me or not, I still needed this girl's info. Then she can be turned over to my newly made "family". I relaxed my muscles, letting out a sigh. I heard a clapping noise and turned to see Grace approaching me with a sadistic grin on her face. "Impressive. Didn't know that you could beat up a girl so nicely." "She's tougher than she looks. Normally that could have killed a person." "Well let's hope you're that rough in other areas, not just fighting." She said teasingly. I lifted our unconcscious friend and put her on the couch. We would get to the bottom of this when she awoke. I went outside and found a nice quiet spot to relax. I took off my shirt and sat down on the overgrown grass. I closed my eyes and tried to relax and meditate. It's something my brother's consciousness had put into my brain. I cleared out all the things in my head and tried to remain perfectly in balance with my surroundings. I heard birds chirping, felt the breeze blowing and from far away cold hear the waves crashing against the water. With my mind fully cleared, I stood up and readied myself in a stance. I began to do an old Wu Shu routine that my brother did when he practiced it. For as much as I hated my brother and his popularity, it was really exciting for me to watch him do his routines. The grace in his movements; the fluidity of them just captivated me. Now those abilities had been passed onto me. I struck the air violently as I went through the routine. I wasn't upset, it was just how my brother did it. I heard the back door open, but that didn't stop me from finishing up. I leaped into the air and struck it with my outstretched legs in a fan pattern. I landed and let out a large sigh as I went back into my stance. Then I peered over to see Grace looking at me with attentive eyes. She seemed to be studying me. Seizing the perfect opportunity, I quipped... "What? You have a staring problem?" She giggled and nodded. She had such a cute smile. This seemed to be so natural for her. I couldn't help but laugh a little myself. I felt a warmness within my cheeks. I hadn't felt that for a long time now. What was this feeling?
Yes I can. Being pro choice for me means that you don't oppose a woman's right to choose an abortion but you don't think you'd do the same thing. There are other options than just having an abortion, such as adoption. There are millions (maybe not- I haven't done research on that) of couples waiting to adopt a child and they spend a lot of money on lawyers waiting for someone to be willing to give their child up. I don't find the statement contradictory in the least
Fair enough. Perhaps it was in the way you worded it that threw me off, because you kinda were rather vague at first. Thanks for the clarification. That being said, I do believe that sex education programs are only as good as the people that are teaching them. However, I do find that the best re-course for kids who have questions about sex is to simply ask an adult, not necessarily their parents. I actually went to my parents, more specifically my dad because one of my GF's was pressuring me into sexual activity and my Dad didn't give me the run around about how sex is bad and I shouldn't be having it. He told me that if I was gonna become active, to make sure that I always used a condom and that I had made doubly sure my partners didn't have STDs. 'Word of mouth only travels so far, son. If she loves you, a simple test to show it is no big deal' . Where I think kids go wrong is that they think that they think that their parents or adults will judge them harshly for having questions about sex, but it is normally just overreacting on the child's part. I can't speak for those who have parents who are devout about sex after marriage, that's their deal and God bless them for that. I had sex when I was 16, and I am no less of a man now than I was back then. In fact, I might say that the experience was just a step in life. I am a Christian, but I don't think that love is really something that can be dictated so much. Such an abstract concept can't be governed by another abstract concept.

See, I live in Texas and even though we have an abstience only policy, we didn't learn diddly about sex-ed in our required Health class that we were required to take in order to graduate. Nothing, nada, zip. While Sex education is important to educate people about sex, I don't think that telling kids "YOU CAN'T EVER EVER HAVE SEX UNTIL YOU'RE OF PROPER AGE." is the right way to go about it. I feel that educating kids on the dangers of unsafe sexual practices and so forth would benefit them more than just simply advocating abstinence. Whether we try to tell them to be abstinent or not, kids will react the same way adults do in throes of passion. Especially young teens who have never experienced this sort of thing in the past. So I believe the best we can do is educate them to practice sex in a safe manner if you are going to practice it and make sure the precautions are taken in order to prevent disease and accidental pregnancies.
Oh yeah and before anyone starts flinging anything else at me- I'm pro-choice, but not pro abortion. That is all.
I find that statement to be highly contradictory. Perhaps you can explain it better?

I gazed at my newfound surroundings and tried to take it in all at once. The place looked serene and peaceful from the inside. You couldn't tell that they were trying to hide from the Eaters at all. Everyone looked like they just lived there lives normally. Carol had sealed me inside this place, so it looked like I had better make myself comfortable. For a while I sat and observed Grace, as she puffed on the second cigarette she bummed off of me. She noticed me staring and laughed, but continued to blow smoke rings into the air. She had a calming air about her, and it made everyone in the immediate area feel at ease, including myself. "So you gonna stare at me all day? Or are you gonna say something?" "Sorry. Talking's not my thing." "Well you better get used to it, because we're gonna be spending a lot of time with each other now. Why don't you start with 'My name is....' " She said teasingly, with a grin on her face. My heart sank. Why do I have to constantly be reminded of the past when all I want to do is get over it? I didn't want anyone to know the horrors of my life. Then my brother's voice snuck into my head. "Korey you need to just tell her. All the forgetting in the world won't help you get over it. " Thanks, you asshole. My brother was always good at that. Preaching. I guess it's something big brothers are supposed to do and as little brothers, we're supposed to resist it until the sudden realization hits us. I sighed and began my futile explanation. "My name is Korey, I'm 19 years old. I used to live in the area around San Bernadino, until about a year ago. I had an older brother, but he's gone now. Well, not really. His voice still lingers in my head. " "Why are you roaming around here?" Grace interrupted. "Ever since my brother died, the Eaters have hounded me non-stop. I was constantly attacked on my way home from work, when I was out with friends...everything. It drove me insane. My girlfriend wanted to leave me because of that. She couldn't take living in fear, hiding, locking the doors and windows at night. Then one night...." my voice trailed off and I stared down at the ground. "Yeah?" Grace was on the edge of her seat. "Nothing...forget it. It's all a memory now anyways. One I wish I could forget." Grace looked at me and sighed. Her face showed one of diassapointment. She smiled. "Well, the important thing is that you're safe and that you actually have a place to stay instead of being on the run. Don't worry, Carol and Eros keep us pretty safe." 'Safe? You just added another loony to your arsenal. Now they're gonna come in flocks' I grumbled to myself.
