The solo at the end of KISSING THE SHADOWS by Children of Bodom. It's my favorite solo because although it's almost 2 minutes in length, it never gets boring. Not only that, but solo battles between incredible guitarists and amazing keyboardists are always sweet.
I didn't think there were many people the boards that liked classical. My hat is off to you. And if you like Beethoven, you should listen to Pachelbel's Cannon In D Major. Amazing song.
Sweet! I guess I'll join the club! I love Classical music. Being an avid true Metal fan, it's kind of hard not to like Classical music, as the two go hand-in-hand. Anyway, the prettiest song I've ever heard has got to be Chainsaw Dismemberment by Mortician! No, but seriously now. I'm gonna have to go with Eternal Wait by Ensiferum. It's not the prettiest song I've ever heard, but it is the first that comes to mind, so I figure it's worth listing here. Lyrics: Over the forgotten sea The voice of an angel is calling for me Somewhere where the mountains collide That's where I'll find my new life I have carried this burden so long for you That nothing but sorrow I feel I have let myself believe That nothing would hurt deeper than truth Never has the wind blown like thousand years ago Everything that I've known has left me on my own Never have I felt the rain fall down like the burning flames All I see is the face of eternal wait I hear your silent cry Lost in the rainy night No reason to live for One reason to die for I am the one who has fallen into the path of shadows And that road never seems to end I am the one who has drowned into the river of tears

Yeah, subgenres don't matter that much if you're not really trying to discuss minor details as far as musical theory goes. The only reason terms like "Blackened Power Metal" or "Technical Death Metal" show up is for indexing certain sounds. For example, if I'm really in the mood for melodic music, I'm going to ask someone about Power Metal, Melodic Death Metal, or something along those lines. That's really the purpose of the subgenres.
-
Yes, but this is a very common thread between solo projects.

You should order your music directly from the record labels. Nuclear Blast USA offers great music at an average of $9-12 per disc and the shipping isn't bad at all.

My answers are formatted like this: [Song - Artist. Alright, here goes! 1. Suffocation - Catatonia 2. A Dozen Furies - Nightmares of a Martyr 3. Dark Funeral - My Dark Desires 4. Bury Your Dead - Burn Baby Burn 5. Disturbed - Conflict 6. Mortician - Blown to Pieces 7. Marilyn Manson - I Want to Disappear 8. Blind Guardian - The Minstrel 9. Korn - Pretty 10. Dark Tranquillity - I, Deception Hmm... a couple of skippable songs in there, but not too bad.

Old Man's Child is more enjoyable to me than Dimmu Borgir. I'm not sure why, but OMC just does it for me.

No problem. I probably should have specified - the snoring smiley face was only in reference to Green Day's "mosh pits". My opinions regarding the actual band themselves are completely different. Like I said, I don't not like them, but it's not like they're one of my favorite bands. And yes, Green Day has become one of those bands plagued with super-stardom. People tend to take their music for granted, which is sad.

I'd hate to sound pretentious, but I'll preface my list with the following: this is by no means my entire collection; rather, it is what I have in my portable CD case today.
We all know you don't like Green Day. Good for you. I personally don't like most of the music you like [some metal is alright, depends on the song], but I haven't ever bashed any of your favorite bands just for the hell of it =/ Just 'cause we aren't metal-heads doen't mean we can't enjoy a mosh pitt. Lol.
That's funny... I don't EVER remember mentioning disliking Green Day. I'm not sure how "we could all know I don't like them" if I didn't say anything about not liking them... But this is beside the point. I actually appreciate Green Day's newer material more than their older stuff. It seems a bit more mature as far as my ears are concerned. Sure, it gets played on the radio to no end, but that doesn't really make a difference if the music holds strong. I think they've become better songwriters, and this I commemorate them for. And just because my opinions regarding one type of music are strong doesn't mean I'm ignorant. I realize that other types of music may incite moshing at shows/concerts. Ska, Punk, and Hardcore (notice that these are not types of Metal music) all have their own types of moshing that happen with almost no exceptions at every show. My comment was that moshing doesn't happen at Green Day shows. I guess if you count groups of people jumping in unison and/or occasionally pushing one another as moshing, this could be the case, but I can't say I've ever seen an actual moshpit occurring at a Green Day concert. That was all. I wasn't band bashing. And to finalize this, what's the deal with being offended when it comes to band bashing? It's simply a difference in musical taste. People bash on my favorite bands all the time because, simply put, Metal is generally socially unnacceptable and misunderstood ("SLiPkNOt is teh metalzorz" being an example here). I understand that people aren't going to like or even try to understand it - this is just how it goes. Everyone needs to chill when they see their favorite band being dissed on. When I hear someone say "Children of Bodom sucks" or "Ensiferum is lame", I shrug and say "to each his own". I'm not picking on anyone in specific here, so PLEASE don't take it wrong. I've seen it happen here on the Boards quite often, as well as everywhere else on the 'net, and even in real life. I guess I just felt the need to say somthing. I apologize for the digression. EDIT:
Everyone just wants to, as I stated before, deviate from the norm.
 Ah, the irony (and truth) of this statement is so beautiful. Everyone wants to be different - thus defeating the purpose completely and entirely.

Alright. The lines each represent a string on your guitar. The bottom line is your E string (the biggest, fattest string). Each line above that is the next string. The numbers on the lines represent which fret you play on that string. C ---------------- D -2--2--2--2--- A ---------------- E ---------------- For example, this is telling you to play the 2nd fret on the D string four times. Any zeros on the tab mean that you play that string open (without pressing down on any of the frets). Hopefully that'll help you get started on your tabbing adventures. And you're gonna hear this a LOT, so I'm sorry to beat a dead horse, but it must be said: PRACTICE CONSTANTLY! Every extra second you find yourself with, sit down with your axe and jam. Even if it's just improv, it helps.

Trust me, Green Day doesn't have mosh pits. The kids in the crowd might like to think they do, but they don't.
1. The majority of people who post in this forum are Metal Heads [No offence, I'm just stating the obvious!
No, there's really only 3 or 4 actual Metalheads here on the boards - we just tend to post the most, making it seem like there's more of us than anything else  As for the question about moshing, the appeal is this: raw energy and raw outlet go hand in hand. You can't just go out onto the street and kick, punch, or push any random individual. At a Hardcore or Metal show, the idea of physical contact is a universally understood one. You can engage in fighting, but here's the thing: it's generally a friendly environment. This concept is lost to outsiders, but if you've ever been in a real moshpit, you know that while other moshers are hitting each other, they're also quick to help each other up if they've fallen or get them out safely if they're really hurt. I honestly can't put my finger on why it's so appealing, and I personally would rather stand in the front row and enjoy the band, but moshing definately has it's place. I guess you just have to try it yourself.

I think that nearly everyone is missing the point of SOAD's lyrics - thus showcasing the problem with the band's leap into the hyper-mainstream. Now don't get me wrong - I think that all of System of a Down's music since Toxicity is some of the most annoying crap I've heard in a long time (Steal This Album is flat out awful), and even such, the first two albums weren't great either (IMO). But people seem to have this strange misconceptions about their message. They don't write random lyrics. Most of lyrics tend to be politically charged, but some deal with other issues. Either way, songs like Cigaro (an allusion to multiple issues, including countries vieing to prove that they're the most powerful via military and financial power) and Chik'n Stu (an attack on the manipulative powers of corporate advertising in our everyday lives) aren't just silly rants. Unfortunately, the casual musically inept yet musically voracious masses fail to look past the celophane-deep surface of the songs. Sorry if I sound rude, but come on. It's not that difficult to figure out.

Thorkell stood watch outside the building. Tyr had gone in not too long ago. It sounded like the Slake almost had a run-in with that Jar character, but all was fine now. Thorkell removed his drinking horn from it's holster and took a swig of the rich mead. He turned to look into the room where Jar, Tarma, Eskari, Dred and Tyr were conversing. Everything was still secure. He heard Dred say "Well, who the hell is gonna start?" He could taste the tension in the group. Thokell turned back to continue his watch duty. The security of the situation was brutally shattered by what he saw. "Guys, you're gonna have to start your conversation later! GET THE HELL OUT HERE WITH WEAPONS AT THE READY!" The five ran out with their arms brandished. Tyr was, of course, still calm and level headed as he emerged from the building, but even his eyes widened at the sight of the coming onslaught. "Oh... oh Gods..." Thorkell removed his battleaxe from it's place across his back. What the fuck are Trolls doing in Balthazar - or anywhere outside the Frostbitten North for that matter? OOC: A little description of the Trolls real quick so this battle better last more than just a paragraph): they're large, standing about 8 feet tall on average. They're generally muscular, but some are rotund or pot-bellied. They're technologically simple creatures, and their armor consists entirely of leather and wood. This doesn't mean they aren't unintelligent, as they do have a full spoken language and a complex societal structure. Trolls generally cary huge axes, sickles, scythes, flails, or morningstars/clubs. Some use Nørdwolves as mounts. There are three of them facing the characters right now. Two are on foot, one is riding a Nørdwolf. One of them has a scythe, one has a spiked flail, and the one on the wolf has a battleaxe. Have fun.

Mosh pit at a Green Day concert? Riiiiiight. There's a pretty cool tour going around starting in January. It's Zao, Devildriver, Trivium, and IN FLAMES. Personally, I think that's a really poorly chosen lineup for In Flames openers, but it should still be good.

Six feet Under - music or mindless yelling?
Jakehammaren replied to [Sound_Nin]'s topic in Noosphere
I disagree. I don't think Six Feet Under sounds anything like Cannibal Corpse. Six Feet Under is a very straightforward, simple Death Metal band, whereas Cannibal Corpse does a more complex grindy/brutal thing. -
I like this Tyr fellow. Something about him... I don't know. Something tells me the two of us could be good friends. "Wilder!" Tyr turned around in his seat. "Yes, Thorkell?" Thorkell got up and walked over to the Wilder. "I'd love to join ya!" Tyr was shaken by the gigantic pat on the back. "I never could pass up on an adventure, so ya got me."

Six feet Under - music or mindless yelling?
Jakehammaren replied to [Sound_Nin]'s topic in Noosphere
Actually, the Pentacle is the symbol for godess worship (among other things). The Pentagram is inherently evil as it is a distortion of the Pentacle (the Pentagram is simply an inverted Pentacle). Yet still, many bands miss the point and just use it to be scary. And why the hell would you bring up bands like Interpol or The Shins on a thread about Death Metal? -
Nirvana = Most overrated band EVER. And if I hear one more person call Kurt Cobain the "greatest guitarist ever" one more time... I don't know what'll happen, but it won't be good. There are countless guitarists who are way, way, WAY more talented than he.

I think you're wrong - Mr. Jack is not a random song. It sounds serious, and it is serious. It's about police brutality (or something along those lines). And Metallica is definately not a depressing band (well, their new stuff is depressing, but that's only because it's excruciatingly lame). And since this is, after all, an opinions thread, I can say that I think System of a Down is becoming increasingly more lame. They hit their stride with Toxicity, which wasn't anything amazing to begin with as far as I'm concerned. But that's just me.

Six feet Under - music or mindless yelling?
Jakehammaren replied to [Sound_Nin]'s topic in Noosphere
Haha! My reply was quite a while back, and my opinion has changed since. I think Six Feet Under is quite possibly one of the worst Death Metal bands I've ever heard. And I don't know much about their lyrics, but I know enough to know that they have nothing to do with Satanism. Most bands that are "Satanic" simply use the Christian version of Satan to scare people. If such bands knew anything at all about Satanism, they'd know that Satanists don't even believe that Satan exists as a being - which is something many "Satanic" bands use in their lyrics. -
OOC: Sorry about the late join-in, folks! PLEASE take the time to check out my character! PLEASE! Just click here and it'll link you right to it! IC: Thorkell stood just outside the Cauldren. He was on his way to get a flagon of mead, but the tavern seemed to be getting a bit rowdy as he approached it. Two days in a row there had been a ruckus at the bar. Can't a man get his fucking mead around here? A Slake came tearing out of the door, booking it as fast as he could down the alley to his left. Thorkell decided that he was very annoyed with this particular fellow, as it was the lizard's fault he would be meadless today. Thus, off he went after the Skale. Slakes may be fast, but a meadless Thorkell? Faster. He began gaining on the frantic Slake, who didn't notice his pursuer. When he did, it was too late; Thorkell was upon him. The Norseman tackled the Slake. Thorkell lifted the lizard up by the scruff of the neck. "What are you up to, my fork-tounged friend? You do realize you've disturbed my daily mead run."
