Kansas abortion doctor killed in church
Rachmaninoff replied to Allamorph's topic in General Discussion
I have little doubt his actions were also fueled by hate (whether he'd admit it to himself or not), but that doesn't mean he was hypocritical in his stance on killing.
I think his actions are what's hypocritical, not his actual stance against abortion. James already covered the other so I'll not bother to do the same. -
That's definitely an interesting selection of Tatoo, Vicky. My grandparents are in town for my sister's graduation, so I'm gonna be stuck at the house entertaining relatives. My grandparents on my father's side of the family are really nice and easy going, but if my cousins come....lord help me. I may be arrested for murder.... Obviously I don't choke children
Stuff like that makes me glad I live on my own. I have some cousins that when they come to visit, I'm only too glad to retreat and go to my own place at the end of the day. ^^ I remember them being more than a little annoying when I was still at home.
Extreme pro-life groups often seem to be saying "terminating a life is always inexcuseable, regardless of circumstances - oh, unless those circumstances involve our agenda." And unfortunately this is the problem with any extreme group really - they have a set of rules that everyone except themselves must live by.
Stuff like that, always makes me want to bang my head on my desk. It's just so hypocritical like you said. Also: Suspect in doctor's death warns of violence Hopefully the claims that he's a lunatic, are correct. We don't need more people like him out there. -
I've already seen the new Star Trek movie and I'd recommend it, even to non Trek fans. It was a very enjoyable movie, in spite of the few hang ups that it had. The other movie on my list to see this summer is Up. The preview for it just looks like a lot of fun and the people I know who have seen it, loved it. I'm sure there are others I'd like to see, but I don't recall which ones at the moment.

Or so Bill Gates is saying in this article here: ?Give it away, you'll enjoy it,? Gates tells rich Now apparently the idea is that giving to charity or doing charity work is something he thinks the rich should do, and he has at least started this by working to eradicate polio. I don't know more than what I read in that article, but it certainly seems like a good thing to do, to work on eradicating certain diseases. Putting that aside though, to give this thread more to go on, what would you give money to if you were a billionaire? I know if I had that much money, I'd probably do something similar, give money to research to find a cure for certain diseases, like cancer and AIDS. I'd also want to provide vaccines to those who can't afford them. After all, it's not like you wouldn't have enough money to actually do that if you were rich enough to be considered a billionaire. =P

I don't know if I should bang my head on my desk, or laugh at this paticular article: Pastor asks members to bring guns to church Apparently, according to the pastor in the article: "Says it's a good way for his Ky. flock to celebrate Independence Day" Now I'm all for responsible gun ownership and promoting it, but at church? o_O Yup, I'm still torn between cringing or just giving up and laughing at the whole thing. So what do all of you think? Good idea or exceptionally poor one on account of where they want to hold the 'learning' session as it were? Oh and what happened to outdoor cooking and fireworks? Much better way to celebrate the holiday in my opinion.

I think both of you would benefit from using Google. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day :p

This time of year is when I start putting everything I drink in the fridge so it's nice and cold when I get it. Soda, juice, lemonade, etc. Of course I also break out the ice trays so I have plenty of ice on hand too. Also, freeze pops and ice cream are perfect on a really hot day.

Well he wasn't one of my favorite actors, but I still enjoyed what he was in. It's a shame to hear that he's passed on.

This year is pretty easy for me and my brothers. My dad's lawn mower is pretty old and doesn't work very well, so we're all pooling our money together to get him a new one. He has no plans on getting a new one since he thinks it will last another summer. We know he'll object to getting it, but he never tells us anything he'd like to have.
-
The ashtray is filled with cigarettes. Not from me, though. I wish my dad wouldn't smoke when he has my car. :/
Some of my brother's friends do that. I wouldn't mind it so much except they never bother to clean it out. I really need my own car. XP
On a totally unrelated note: Good grief it's as hot as blazes. I need new shorts.
And we have a cold front coming in so it has cooled off quite a bit. I just wish it would actual rain, though the breeze we're getting right now is pretty nice.

Kansas abortion doctor killed in church
Get off your high horse, cowboy. From the first moment you labelled the act as a senseless crime and have been judging the man's actions, doing it off as someone committing terrorism because he 'only' had a different opinion. ??People?? here are not justifying the assassin's actions nor letting their judgement get clouded, but they are speaking up because the other side of the ??people?? are so quick with their replies and their judgement.
That's what terrorism is Boo: ter·ror·ism (těr'ə-rĭz'əm) n. The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons. His ideology if you will, was that the man was a murderer. If you read the article, the clinic where this guy had been working had been bombed and he himself shot in the past. I said terrorism since the place was consistently threatened instead of some one time attack. On the other point, I'll clarify the clouding judgment bit. I've been discussing this with some of the narrow minded people around here (and by here I mean where I live not on OB) so that was intended more towards those people than anyone in the thread. So my apologies for that since it's not really intended for anyone here. -

I'm not saying they are inseparable, I'm saying legally, what he was doing, by law isn't considered murder. Ethically the man who shot him thinks so, but that's why we have laws in the first place, because of situations like this. Also, you already answered the question about the situation you presented. That sort of thing is illegal and I don't see it becoming legal anytime soon. I'm not downplaying what this guy did for a living, after all, I don't agree with abortion at all. I just can't condone killing him over it. Even though by the religious standards I was raised in, it's unacceptable unless there is no choice. I don't always agree with the decisions our government or local law makers make, but I still try to accept and live by them. And yes I do try to vote and change laws that I don't agree with. Anyway, I'm kind of wondering what drove that person to resort to terrorism to put a stop to it. So many people don't agree with abortion, but they don't resort to such drastic measures either. -

It's the principal Gavin and there's nothing disingenuous about it. Vigilantist justice, regardless of the reason, is wrong. I think people are going, oh well, he was doing abortions so whoop de do da. However, what's the point in having and upholding laws if someone blatantly disregards it to murder someone? All because they disagreed with that person's occupation? You can't just go, oh, well he considered the guy a murderer and shrug it off. No matter what his motive or reasoning, it was still cold blooded murder. If anything you proved my point by saying people wouldn't label the actions of a judge morally dubious. Well what about those same judges who ruled in favor of abortions being legal? Still gonna say that? People are letting their disgust for this man's chosen profession override their common sense. Where some of us are refusing to let it color our judgment in regards to a senseless crime. -

I agree with Vicky. Whether I agree with abortions or not, it's no excuse to murder someone for it. If anyone is pig headed in this situation, it's the fool who went to such extremes by shooting the guy, just to have things done the way they think they should be done. It reminds me of an article I saw about the increase in threats against judges in our country. There's nothing pig headed about ignoring threats like that and doing one's job. It's a shame when others are so fanatical that they can't handle someone having a different opinion or doing their job. -
I hate the summer. Cookouts are nice and all, but I cherish my sleep over cookouts. And trying to sleep during muggy nights is the crappiest thing ever. (I need an air conditioner in my room.)
That's where having central air pwns. Though I remember when my parents had a swamp cooler when I was a kid. o_O Hated it since on humid days, it didn't work very well at all. That and you had to sleep with your door open or you didn't get any of the cooler air at all.
Define comforting XD. Was I still a moderator when he came up with that? I remember Des giving everybody an avatar with the girls dancing or whatever for an April Fools day prank, but I don't remember the skin being made...
In Des's case, I'd say comforting, for him, is him knowing he can nail you with a prank whenever he feels like it. XP Anyway, the April Fools day prank is what inspired it. The skin was added shortly after that prank. Within a week or two if I remember correctly.

Haha, no worries. It's not like they show up every single day. o_O Patrick may trust them to wander around a bit, but they know better than to be a nuisance. Well, at least they try... for them.
Curiousity.... Switches to the Caramell thingy. EDIT:
%@#$ WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
X_X Whoever came up with that is pure evil.
Desbreko came up with it, and just think, he's one of our site Administrators too. Comforting thought , isn't it? =P

I see Boo beat me to reminding you of the Jaderoll, Sangome. That one Des put together that's ten minutes long is just insane. lol

You're not alone Ace, I prefer the standard as well. Indigo, though nice looking, is just a little too dark for my tastes. And the Geisha is too purple and the other too damn pink. So Standard it is.

Oh I can certainly see why you would find such stories hard to understand James. But for us, unfortunately, they're pretty common. I'll use one of my parents friends to give an example. She's a divorced mother of three kids and worked as a teacher with just enough part time hours so she could get insurance for her kids. The cut back means that as of September, they'll have no insurance at all. She can't just go and pick up private insurance since the cut back in hours means she'll have no money to pay the monthly insurance premium. When you get it through work, your employer pays part of it for you, or you get a much better rate than on your own. If I remember correctly, she was paying $110 a month for herself and her three kids. Private insurance would cost around $300 a month, something that with the decrease in pay, she simply won't have the money for. A lot of people object to the idea of a health system that includes everyone, but I find the idea of millions of people having no insurance at all, far worse.

Since I finally got a copy of The Cardinal of the Kremlin by Tom Clancy, that is what I'm currently reading. Certain people here [pokes basement cat] know why I hunted up a copy of this paticular book. Oh and I really need to get started on Faith of the Fallen. I've had a copy of that for a month now and I haven't even started on it yet.

I'm not sure how I ended up listening to Chains of Love by Erasure. o_O Oh wait, nvm. I accidentally clicked on one of Beth's stations for Pandora.... *headdesks*
