1. It's already one of my favorites. Plot: Mikado Ryūgamine is a young man who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi warns him about people he doesn't want to cross in the city: a violent man dressed like a bartender, an information merchant, and a mysterious gang called "Dollars." And to top it off, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city: the "Black Rider." I recommend both, the manga and the series :) I like/love it 'cause it is quite mysterious and while watching never get bored. My crushes are Shizuo, Izaya & Kida :D go watch it
  2. I was just talking with someone the other day and I started to talk about how Code Geass is just like Death Note and how the main characters are similar when i started to think who would win if Light Yagami and Lelouch Lamperouge fought each other. There both crazy, smart, fit, and have to ability to make people do what they want (mainly killing them). They would fight each other face to face but rather it would be the situation that was in Death Note with L and Light trying to find each other out. I think that light would win, all he needs is a name and a picture of a person to kill them, and he can make them do whatever he wants before they die, while Lelouch has to be face to face with the person that he manipulates. Plus Lights laugh beats Lelouch's Laugh's no questions asked.

    Anime Lovely Complex

Risa Koizumi has always been taller than most people, and Atsushi Ootani has always been shorter than most boys. Risa, who fell asleep during an assembly and is caught doing it ends up being punished by being required to attend summer school. Only to realize that she's stuck in the same summer class with Ootani. Something that annoys both of them since they are always arguing with one another. But when a cute tall guy named Suzuki ends up in the same summer class, Ootani and Risa team up to help each other with getting to know someone they are interested in. Risa with the new student Suzuki and Oatani with Risa's friend Chiharu. But in the end Suzuki and Chicharu end up
liking each other.
However, Risa begins to notice that she has feelings for Ootani. Feelings that Ootani doesn't seem realize are there. Thus begins the start of Risa finding a way to get Ootani to understand that she likes him as well as figuring out if a relationship between a short guy and a tall girl is even possible. Now I've only watched the first episode, but it was fun, engaging and the constant arguing between Risa and Ootani was well done. It's almost as they are good friends who are too afraid to realize that they just might like each other. I'm not a huge fan of the animation to this even though it does look nice. Primarily because they way they've done both Risa and Ootani reminds me of One Piece a bit. However, it does fit them. Especially when they have moments of saying the exact same thing or reacting to something in the same manner. Like in the first episode and the two of them get all excited over
swimming in the pool. They're like little kids being given a treat.
Anyway, it does look like it will be a fun series about relationships and I'm looking forward to watching the next episode.

    Anime Cosplaying with glasses?

what are your opinions on people who cosplay, but have to wear glasses? ...okay how do I put this, I mean when someone cosplays but they wear glasses, so they have to wear glasses in the cosplay (when the character does not call for it) do you hate it? not care? or does it annoy you? I was just wondering really because I do want to cosplay (whether I will or not is debatable and depends on money I dont have at the moment) but my vision really sucks so I have to wear glasses (new contacts and convention dont scream a match to me xD)

Anime Where did you catch up?

I'm talking about the long ongoning series like Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece. I know that a few hardcore people will say they've been watching sense they came out but unlike those people most of us starting watching after they became popular. So when did u catch up to the current episode out in the series? (guess the best way to discribe that is to describe the episode for each) One Piece- I caught up just after they arrived at Shaparody Acapelligo Naruto- Shuppuden part of the series is where I caught this one just after team Kakashi reforms and is sent on thier first mission. Bleach- I caught up somewhere just before Ichigo started fighting the Panther hollow (I"m blanking out on this name) and he ran into Nell in her baby form.

    Anime Anime studying/exam episodes

I have tons of exams next week, so to get myself pumped to study (heh..yea right) I wanted to watch to see how some anime characters do it :) I know of a few already, like I'm sure there are some in Kare Kano, and there are a few in Super Gals (I think) and ummm what else?

    Anime Baccano!

I've just watched episode one of Baccano! and I'm left feeling excited but at the same time completely confused. I haven't a clue what's going on. It starts off with a newspaper editor (I think...?) and his assistant discussing a tale. They argue over where the starting point should be, and from whose viewpoint it should be told, and each time a new suggestion is made the story starts there, only to get interrupted. After the break we lose the editor and assistant and get follow-ups on a few of the fragments we saw earlier, but nothing's in any discernible order and the action jumps around all over the place. What I can gather from episode one is:

It's set in and around Prohibition-era Manhattan.
Big Band jazz and swing are awesome.
It has a massive cast (whose Romanised names are helpfully given in the OP sequence).
Certain characters can't die (and I have no idea why).
It's not afraid to be graphically brutal.
Some of the voice acting is just a little bit too over-the-top goofy (I'm looking at you, Isaac/Onosaka Masaya - but then again, his voice grew on me in Bleach... ho hum, we'll see).
A lot of it seems to concern Mafia turf wars - there are either two or three Mob families. (I lost some details in all the chopping about.)
I want to start giving people arbitrary points rewards when they explain things badly.
Being generous to bums is bad.
The whole not-being-able-to-die thing is an ability you can gain, not something you just have (and might be magic, but that might just be Isaac being superstitious).
I'm interested to see whether the 'channel-hopping' narrative style is just something they're using to draw us in for the first episode - it certainly caught my attention - or whether we'll slow down and focus on different characters in different episodes, or what. I kind of hope it's the former. It's fun to jigsaw the story back together in your head. But then, the pace might be difficult to sustain for 13 episodes. Anime Death Note TV

To catch those of you who are unfamiliar with the story up to speed, let's begin with Viz's somewhat lame but nevertheless adequate summary of the manga.
Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and bored out of his mind! But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal... or his life?
Anyway. The Death Note anime started airing in Japan today, and saying that I've been looking forward to it would be quite the understatement. I haven't watched the raw yet, but once I do see it, I'll update this post (or post again, whatever) with my impressions. I'll reserve any final judgments until then, but it certainly looks as if Madhouse has really blown this one out of the ballpark. For now, at any rate, here are a few relevant links. Episode 1 screencaps Episode 1 screencaps & impressions Official site [JP] OP sequence I'll edit in others as more sites post screencaps and the like. As for the episode count, the number that gets bandied about most often seems to be 37; apparently this might only be referring to the first arc, though. So it's all a little nebulous. ~Dagger~
  9. [strike]Time for some topic thieving[/strike] I thought this would be an interesting topic for here. I'm just going to copy and paste it because the poster certainly did a nice job in wording it. "This might be an interesting exercise and awesome discussion fodder. We have shows we love. We have shows we hate. In a normal discussion, we tend to heap praise on a show we love and tear into a show that's terrible or too silly. Nothing wrong with that, it's perfectly normal. Yet at the same time many great shows have something that could improved. We think "man, if these things were change, it would be perfect!" Conversely many awful or silly shows may at least have a little redeeming virtue, and so one might think "man, if this had been done differently, it wouldn't suck!" So here, the challenge is to think outside the box and look at your favorites and pet peeves with a critical eye. The rules are simple.
Choose any sort of anime. It can be a series or an OVA or a movie, it doesn't matter. Do this as often as you like with as many anime as you like.
If you like it, list and discuss the things you like most about it. Obviously it's vice versa for something you hate. These details can be broad or specific, it doesn't matter. Maybe it's a character, maybe it's the plot at large, maybe it's the animation or music. Anything goes.
Here's the trick. For every favorite strength or weakness, also single out and discuss a flaw or virtue respectively.
Discussing and/or challenging the criticism and praise that others have to offer is fair game and highly encouraged.
Just for even more emphasis, discussion is key. Please, please don't make this a list thread.
Here's a very simple example to get everyone on the right track.
Final Fantasy Gundam General opinion: positive Strengths Well first off, wow! I can't believe Sunrise commissioned Square-Enix to make up a Gundam story. Sure, all of the men are designed like bishonen and they brought magic into a mecha show, but the story is epic! And best of all, the corresponding game won't suck for a change! Now that's merchandising done right. Weaknesses Hey, wait a minute! This show doesn't actually exist! And it's a delusional fantasy that will never happen! Whew, thank goodness. That was close."
Personally, I don't care how you set it up. ~Props to GWOtaku for the thread~ Edit: Crap... The title is suppose to be "The Virtues and Flaws of Anime You Enjoy or Dislike"... Can I get someone to change it please?

    Anime Lucky Star

Opening sequence movie Dance, puppets, dance! [strike]Haruhi 2[/strike] Lucky Star is a new anime from the studio that made The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Much like Azumanga Daioh, it's a mostly plotless comedy about the lives of high school girls. Except in this case, the girls are otaku/gamers. I'm not sure how I feel about them making the OP so much like Haruhi's OP and ED, but I suppose that they have the right to capitalize on their own success. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the show. For better or worse, chances are that it'll achieve at least Haruhi's level of cult popularity. ~Dagger~
  11. Ok first off I'm in a boxing mood. I've been playing Punchout for the Wii and in between my frustrating losses I've been watching Hajime no Ippo. I've noticed a lot of similarities between the two. I know Punchout has been around sense 1987, and the Hajime no Ippo came out in 2000 but I have this weird feeling that Ippo is based off of Little Mac. Other than the trainer and their hometowns they could be freaking twins.... I'm curious what you guys think of this. I also want to pose the ultimate question. Who wins in a boxing match Ippo or Mac? Personally I vote for Ippo
  12. [strike]More topic thievery.[/strike] A neat little idea I got from another forum. I thought this might be a little fun thing to do for the OB since this year is coming to a close fairly quick, might I add. What you do is list your top 10 favorites in order (I know, it's going to be pretty hard since it's only ten). When it comes to tallying points, #1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 9, and so forth. Two to three weeks should be enough right or should it be 3-4 weeks? Extention if not enough nominations. Friday, January 15 is where I'm thinking about a cut off date at the moment. To keep this from being a "list" thread just give a sentence or 2 explaining what you like about it. Should I have posted this in the convention center?

    Anime Gantz

I'm pretty surprised no one has written a review about Gantz so far. Anyway though, this anime is so far becoming one of my favorite animes. Its unique since the first episode focuses more on the actions and voices on other peoples minds compared to the focus being on the main character(s). The atmosphere is similar to modern teenagers (how we cope with someone being in trouble and how in some cases when people are in need of help not everyone is up to doing the task). Eventually it gets into the game aspect of the anime
where random people who die are stuck in limbo (or at least thats what i get from it so far) and have to (I think) beat a game system that the orginal creators could not
. As of right now I've seen up to episode 8 and I can't wait for the next DVD to come out in May. This anime is also very violent (up there with Elfen Lied) and has segments of nudity so if your not a fan of that i wouldn't recommend seeing it. Other than that its been pretty good. Until the whole series is complete (which wont be for a while) I won't write a full review but this is what I have thought of it up till now. Almost forgot the opening song is amazing in this I can't get it out of my head sometimes.
  14. Obligatory Wiki link So Sunrise's latest foray into the Gundam universe aired the day before yesterday with the first of six adaptations of the Gundam Unicorn light novels. I have to say I was rather pleased with the finished product, the style for the anime is modern while at the same time the visuals are all clearly reminiscent of the original series and its sequels. Funnily enough I've never got around to watching the original series, something I may have to remedy. Anyway anyone else watching Unicorn ?
  15. what is the most disturbing thing you have seen in an anime? I think hansel and gretel from black lagoon were freeking weird. they're these little twins that were raised in as
porn slaves. they get their kicks from putting nails in peoples heads, believing killing people would make them immortal. im not even sure which one is the boy and which is the girl, since they're both split personalitys who take turns wearing a wig. oh yeah, and they made out.

Hey there goldenboy, next time use spoiler tags so you don't ruin it for people who have yet to see the show. Anime Winter 2010 Anime Season

Yep, it's that time again! The winter season is upon us, and while there are way fewer shows than fall, winter has no shortage of shows that at least look interesting. Plus, there's no way it could possibly suck as hard as fall did, right? Right?? Right????? Season previews for those who are still in the dark about what is airing: Bokutachi no Blog, Sea Slug Team! and Random Curiosity Series I am definitely interested in watching: -- Durarara!!: Adapted from light novels written by the creator of Baccano!? I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now. -- Nodame Cantabile Finale: I heard the manga did not end in an especially satisfying way, but hell, after watching the great first season and the solid second season, there's no way I'm not going to watch this final season of Nodame, ****** ending or not. So there we have it. What are you all tuning in to watch this season?

    Anime Shin Mazinger Z

I don't know how many people here will be interested in watching this, but for the mecha fans here, I cannot recommend Shin Mazinger Z more. It's got all the crazy plot, insane characters, hot blooded action and participation from the gods themselves that you could ever want in a mecha series. The anime is a re-imagining of Go Nagai's Mazinger Z (sprinkled with characters and elements of his other series), but you don't really need to have knowledge of those to enjoy Shin Mazinger Z -- I don't have much more than a cursory knowledge of those works, myself. Basically the story follows Kouji Kabuto, who becomes the pilot of the giant robot Mazinger Z that his grandfather created. The awesomely named Dr. Hell wants Mazinger Z for his own nefarious purposes, and he sends his trusted followers Baron Ashura (a half male-half female with mysterious origins), Count Brocken (a Nazi cyborg who carries his own head around) and Viscount Pygman (a pygmy warrior with voodoo powers) to [strike]Gundam[/strike] Mazinger Jack Mazinger Z. The first half of the series is pretty basic, albeit with crazy villains and cool action. It sets the scene pretty well for the second half, however, with goes deeper into the story and the intersecting pasts of the characters and the origins of Mazinger Z. There are twists and cliffhangers aplenty, and the ending is one of the most memorable I have seen of any anime recently. Shin Mazinger Z is an homage to super robot anime (often watched by children), but the build-up and execution of its ending is as intelligent and adult as anything you'll see in the best of series. Plus, Shin Mazinger Z is so awesome that even the narrator is hot blooded, as evidenced in this scene ... You know you want to watch after seeing that. Don't deny it.
  18. Death Note/CLAMP/Goro Taniguchi/Gundam? Count me in! Alas, if only it were that simple... Code Geass is a futuristic mecha series with character designs by CLAMP (though they had no input, as far as I know, on the story) and direction by Goro Taniguchi (Planetes, Infinite Ryvius, s-CRY-ed, GunxSword). It takes place in an alternate world in which the Empire of Britannia--which is basically the United States, haha--has invaded and taken over Japan. Now called Area 11, Japan is unfairly subjugated, oppressed, blah blah blah. Fiery mecha action ensues. Let's get the good stuff out of the way first. Code Geass proves conclusively that it is possible for CLAMP's lanky, new-fangled character designs to shine on screen. The same type of designs that ended up looking rather like crap in the Tsubasa Chronicle and xxxHOLiC anime are absolutely wonderful here. So that's a treat. It's also a good-looking series in general. The first episode has a fast-moving and decently engaging story--no annoying dawdling here. Lelouch, a Japanese high schooler who resents Britannia, is in many ways reminiscent of Death Note's Light Yagami, which is hardly a bad thing. Pacifistic mecha heroes make me want to retch on my keyboard. And to be fair, Code Geass has a lot going for it. I enjoyed the first episode, and it could turn out to be a very strong and entertaining show. But! Here's where the twofold trouble starts. First of all, there's the somewhat disturbing nationalistic element... "Nippon Banzai!" and all that. Britannia's actions are clownishly evil; seeing
soldiers gun down an old couple in cold blood
made me wrinkle my nose at the ham-handed emotional manipulativeness of the writers (rather than sympathize with Japan, as I was meant to). I'm actually not too worried about this, though, if only because Lelouch himself is clearly going to be a morally ambiguous character. The other issue is the relationship between Lelouch and Suzaku, his estranged childhood friend. It's so derivative of the Athrun/Kira relationship in Gundam SEED, and so obviously meant to reel in the fangirls, that I couldn't help but cringe. The positive side of this is that Athrun and Kira's friendship/rivalry/etc. was poorly handled, as far as I'm concerned, and Code Geass will perhaps be able to do something more interesting with the same type of relationship. But I just couldn't get Gundam SEED out of my head during the first episode of Code Geass, and it was distracting. Especially since I'm not a SEED fan. There are other cliched aspects to the series...
mysterious girl? Blah.
Yet even that won't necessarily be a huge drawback.
Mysterious girl getting killed in the first episode? Intriguing.
It probably sounds like I'm being very harsh on the show, but I do think it has a ton of potential. I just don't want to see them screw it up by going too heavy on the nationalism and so forth. ~Dagger~
  19. Hey everyone, I'm looking for Valentine's Day Anime episodes if you guys can suggest some for me. Any genre is okay (although comedy is my fav). I'm sure there's tons out there but I could only come up with a couple. Cheers in advance!
  20. Ok I've just recently started reading manga. I was wondering how long it takes to translate Mangas conpared to Anime. From what i understand it takes less than a week for anime to be translated and subbed. Manga on the other hand I have no idea. I know there is more time put into manga due to typesetting and other stuff.

    Anime Japanese Transcripts

Greetings! I have an important question to ask. I've been looking for a complete Japanese Transcript for Cowboy Bebop. I've only found episode one, and few other episodes, but not the complete series. Can anyone out there help me? Thankyou.
  22. For those of you fans of Japanese pop culture living in Canada and U.S., some of you may know that Issue No. 98 of "Anime News Network's Protoculture Addicts" (Protoculture Addicts' Guide to 80 Anime You Must Watch) was suppose to be released in stores in summer of 2009 (scheduled date mentioned at http://www.protoculture.ca/Proto/index.html) . Issue No. 97 of this mag came out in summer of 2008. Anyway, it's been months now, and it seems no copy of it appeared in any stores in the Montreal city, which I live nearby. So I was wondering if there's a chance that the magazine is facing a delay or hiatus scenario or is there a chance that this mag got cancelled without its editor making an official announcement about it on the mag's website. I mean, a cancelled magazine series would normally use the "last issue" sign on the front cover of the issue released before its cancellation.

    Anime Your Collection

I just completed my Sailor Moon anime collection. I'm really happy about it. Sailor Moon is a major comfort anime for me, so having the whole thing is almost like reuniting with a childhood friend or finding a stuffed animal you loved when you were a kid. What items in your anime/anime-related collection are you most proud of, and why?
