Geek Affirmation

So today I ended up having several moments that affirmed my geekiness.

First, While driving to Des Moines I heard the DJ on the modern rock station talking about how he was excited about the new Ninja Assassin movie but disappointed when he saw it. Then he recommended people should watch the anime series Ninja Scroll instead.

Then, after months of searching I finally was hired for a full time job today. In true geek fashion, my first reaction was an (internal) "Yatta!"

Finally, I stopped by Barnes & Noble to pick up a couple volumes of the Bleach manga. When I went to check out the girl working at the register not only knew about Bleach but talked to be about how she was reading it too. Then when she asked me if I wanted to donate a book to the local children's hospital she tried to find a geek-friendly book to donate in my name (she made the comment that she needed to sneak more geeky books onto that rack).

All that in one day.

So I was wondering, if you consider yourself a geek, do you ever have moments of geek affirmation like this (i.e. moments that make you feel good about being a geek)?

So I was wondering, if you consider yourself a geek ?

Relatively speaking, yes. I try to maintain the appearance of a normal, sane person however.

Do you ever have moments of geek affirmation like this ?

Yes. One of which involved meeting an engineering friend of a housemate of mine from last semester. After the discussion strayed into the topic of future power sources we both ended up agreeing GN particles were the way to go. Naturally my non-geeky housemate was rather mystified by the whole thing.

I have yet to do the internal "Yatta" however, thankfully.

I try to maintain the appearance of sanity as well and the "Yatta" is just a result of watching too much Heroes.

I too try to maintain the appearance of a somewhat normal person. That said, I can flip flop between nerd and normal fairly easily.

As for geekish glee, the other day, I was sitting in my college's cafeteria, when someone at a table across from mine suddenly shouted OBJECTION!, and I think pointed at them, too. I smiled and giggled on the inside.

Though the friend went "OVERRULED" in retort, instead of TAKE THAT, HOLD IT, or GOTCHA. I was sad at that. :(
Every second of my life is an affirmation to my geekdom. For example, I'm currently wearing both the Red Lantern and the Green Lantern power rings.

Also, internal "yatta!"s? Amateurs. Mine are 100% vocal.
I didn't think a 100% vocal one would reflect well at a job interview. Would have likely resulted in massive confusion.

Just tonight, I watched (and faved) a bunch of .hack game cutscenes (the original four) on YouTube. Felt damn good, gotta say.

But anyway, here's a better one.
About a month ago I was in Japan traveling around Osaka via the trains. I got lost though and ended up trying to look for a bookstore that might have subway/train maps. I wandered into a random one and what should I see (other than the pornographic stuff) but .hack posters plastered on the walls. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Then I got the heck outta there since they didn't have what I wanted and all the pr0nz was creeping me out.

What's with all the "I'm a geek, but I try to look normal" replies? Being geeky is just about having passion for something. Your interests make you who you are. Why would you go to lengths to hide that?

This sounds like the start of a bad romantic comedy.

Because male geeks are apparently considerably less attractive (and far more numerous) than their female counterparts thereby forcing us to adopt a more normal outer appearance to attract women. It's not really hiding it, just keeping it in reserve until we're certain they're comfortable with whatever level of geekiness we possess.

I know, I know. I ought to turn in my lightsaber right now but I believe that by getting previously un-nerdy girls used to dating a nerdy guy it opens up a larger playing field for the rest of us. I'm like Quinlan Vos, joining the Dark Side to destroy it from within.

Of course should I happen to come across a nice nerdy girl who's already a giant Star Wars geek then the mask drops immediately I promise.

It's kind of hard to hide your geeky nature when it's your career and major. Not that I try to, I like what I do. Though I suppose being a music major is a totally different type of geeky behavior deal than one of a Star Wars fanatic like you are Gavin. =P

Heh true enough, although my geekiness is spread out over a variety of subjects I am a colossal Star Wars nerd. That said, you are a Doctor Who fan which is technically an even smaller niche of the sci-fi fandom. :P

It seems like you're just inconveniencing yourself, and the other person. If she won't date a Star Wars nut, wouldn't you both rather know that beforehand?

So apparently I am a mythology nerd. I found out in my Global Studies class that I know more about myhtology in every culture we've studied so far than my teacher does.

Also, my pokemon addiction seems to be shooting out everywhere. Heck, my ANIME addiction is as well! Example: After watching the G.I. Joe movie (was crappy) last night, I shouted out to my entire family, "That movie had more freaking flashbacks than a Naruto fight scene!" Shame.

Well it's not as if I specifically pick women whom I know would never date a man with geeky tendencies, it's like any relationship where it takes time to get to know a person fully. If the subject of conversation becomes our interests then sure, I'll let her know I'm a bit of a geek, but I do interests aside from geeky stuff and have had girlfriends who weren't geeks and still had quite a happy relationship with them.

Perhaps "put in reserve" was a poor choice of words, I just meant that I don't I turn up for first date with a gal dressed like Darth Vader, insist that the establishment provide me with penne all'arrabbiata and then engage her in a deep philosophical debate regarding the Endor Holocaust.

When I show her my apartment she's going to see my Star Wars books intermixed with other books, my DVD collection, my 360, my PC. I don't hide any of that either.

Today my glabal studies teacher was teaching us about the Hebrews and their eternal bad luck with people. When we got through the many invasions and slave-makings and whatnot, I said, obviously without thinking, "These guys have been kidnapped more times than Princess Peach!" It brought on a few giggles here and there, but mostly I heard the "ba-dum-CHISH!" sign of a bad joke. I has a sad.
