I don't have a real answer for you, but everyone I talk to who has gotten one tells me that if you are going to buy a card, don't go for the cheap ones. basically if you need to save up to get a good one, do it, because there is nothing worse than buying a card , then needing a new one because it isn't good enough.

as for helpful information:
IMO best GPU for the price is the Radeon HD 5770. It's just $120 and can easily max Crysis at 1280x1024 with anti-aliasing turned off. The model I linked to is also a single slot card, which will come in handy if you have a small case (or one with weird backwards slots like mine).

The GTX 460 is amazing as well. It goes for about $130, but is commonly a dual slot card. A single slot "Razor Edition" version came out about a week ago, but it's well over 200 dollars. It's about 5-10% faster than the 5770.

Both of these cards are overkill for many games out right now, and they aren't even considered "high end."

The big question is this: Do you have a good enough power supply run faster cards? After the Radeon HD 5670 and Geforce GT 240, all higher cards use PCI-Express power connectors. the 5770 and 460 need one 6-pin connector, and higher cards need two connectors--the first couple of high end GPUs need two 6-pins, then the highest end cards use one 6-pin and an 8-pin.

If you don't have at least a good 400-500 watt power supply that comes with a PCI-E connector or two, I wouldn't try running any card higher than an HD 5670

That card can still max most games out today, and it's only $72. If you don't want to spend extra money on a better power supply if you don't already have one, then I say you should get it card and not have to worry.

You still gotta tell us what you're currently using. Your card may be bottlenecked if you have a weak processor.
i got it from this link if you wanna check the rest of it out. Edited by CaNz

I've the Radeon 5670 and it allows me to play every game I laid my hands on so far, mostly fully maxed out, without any troubles. I guess the 5770 would top that then.

Thing is, if you buy an expensive one, you'll be bummed out because a better one will be out the next day and your expensive one will be cheaper. However, if you buy a cheap one, a better one will be 'the cheap one' the next day, so yours ends up being less good than 'the cheap one'. Choices in life...

After looking at some comparison things, I think the Geforce 9800 GT(X) one tops the 5670 just a bit, so maybe you should go for that one. At that site it's $11 above your budget though.

i got this graphics card (ati radeon hd 5770) its cheap (because im dutch) and i must say i am pleased with its performance(or else i would get angry).
you dont get te latest games up to high on every single option but mass effect2 is running with everything on its highest with 4x anti aliasing.
that said there were 2 frame rate drops in the entire game (vs 1236718263 on x360 mass effect 1) so thats barely noticable also to get some better performance out of it i just had fun sliding bars in the ATI catalyst center which worked out (hooray!). plus you have the delicate matter of overclocking if youre feeling like a real cybertechgreasemonkey person.

i'm not a real expert on this area but i do have a pleasant experience with this graphics card (and entire setup)
