Hmm....I actually have little problems with personal space, despite being terribly anti-social. I'm actually starting to miss contact; a friend of mine used to always get very close to me, until she got a boyfriend. Now, I get no contact at all. I need a hug.

How Correct is Politically Correct?
DeathBug replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
As I see it, as long as you're respectful (meaning you don't use terms like "*****" or "******" or "Whitey", as they are derogatory), I'm "cool."
As an anglo-American, I'm offended that the censor didn't block out 'w*****'. The problem with political correctness is that it works under the assumption that anyone who isn't following its jargon is insensative, or a racist. Heres' an idea for the Uber-PC: Instead of focusing on the words, focus on the message. A white person who says 'black' more than likely isn't trying to be offensive; they're using the term they've heard in common usage. It's about the intent, not the word itself. This would be, I assume, the same logic behind minorities using racial epitaths around each other. At least, I think it is, but I still see that practice and those words as racist, no matter who you are. -
Television historically targets the lowest common denemenator of the culture, so it should be no surprise that many people are unstatisfied with it. I watch Smallville and Scrubs, and the rest is all cartoons. Cartoons, I believe, are the best programming being produced. What I dislike more than bad televsion, though, is good television that's extended long past it's lifetime. Friends, The Simpsons, Fraiser, South Park, etc. I wish, for once, something would end exactly when it's supposed to.

*Sighs* Look, the phrase is one the money out of respect for the people on the money, who all believed in God. It's not whether you trust in God, it's that they did. Is it that bad to show such respect to the beliefs of the founders and great men of the country? This has got to be the most stupid non-issue we, as a nation, have ever come up with.

Well, my name used to be 'Beelzebumon', named after the coolest Digimon character ever. (You know he is). However, I decided I wanted a general name that wasn't limited to a specific genre or anime. I went withwhat i wanted my e-mail address to be: 'DeathBug'. It's just something I made up at random. Sounds cool and irreverent at the same time. (By the way, 'DeathBug' is spelled as one word, with the b capitalized in the middle. Not everyone spells it right.)

Furi Kuri was discussed very extensivly when it was first aired, but there's only so much you can say about a six-episode OVA. (The robot's name is 'Kanti'). The plot is simple:
After Haruko nails Naota on the head with her guitar, his frontal lobe becomes the gateway through whichj hostile Medical mechanica robots are transported. Kanti's programing is altered after a piece of him is removed, so that he becomes one of the good guys. MM's plan involves stripping the human race of the ability to think, for reasons never revealed. Haruko doesn't care about that, though; she wants the power of the space pirate king Atamosk, who is supposed to be a prisoner of Medical Mechanica. Agent Amuro, who knew Haruko from his childhood, is trying to stop both MM and Haruko, but he's an idiot, so it doesn't matter. And, while all that's going on, the story is really a metaphor for growing up, with Naota learning about who he is in the world.
Cool, eh?
I know that there are figures in history that are called evil and inhuman, such as Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and Hitler... However, if you think about it, are they just following their beliefs?
The way I see it, there are two types of 'villainous' people in the world, to apply the term loosely. First, there are the people who know what they're doing is wrong. you petty criminals, murders, shoplifters...while they might rationalize their actions, they know they're breaking the law. They know they're wrong. The second, and infinatly more dangerous type, is the person who believes that the actions they commit are right. Your Hitlers, your Bin Ladens, they are the most dangerous type of person. Anyway, Id' rather keep this conversation to fictional villains, because brining real life people into it will only turn this into another political debate.(I don't mind political debates, but I enjoy this thread for what it is.) Well, let's look at it this way: why in the Hell should the new kids on the football team have to prove anything to you? Can they play football well? Then they should be on the team. It's not difficult, and it's not your decision to make. Hazing is a pointless, sadistic ritual that you'd think we would have outgrown by now. Every time a hazing incident makes the news, it's always disgusting. Girls getting feces dumped on them, boys getting sodemized with broom sticks, beatings...it's bullying, plain and simple. There are two great ironies that I find go along with the concept of hazing. First, the hazing rituals don't improve the skills that are evenn eeded to participate in whatever activity is in question. That whole 'weed out the weak' argument is a bunch of crap to disguise the fact that you're picking on new kids for absolutly no reason. Second, hazing works under the asumption that the new kids have to 'prove something' to you, the hazer. You're just trying to make yourself feel like you're better than them, but the fact is, if you're such a thug you have to do this to get your kicks, you're little better than a schoolyard bully. I hope that tortuering younger players earns you the respect of your cruel cohorts, because you're sure not going to find any from anywhere else. Bottom line: hazing is cruel and pointless, and you're a cretin if you do it.

Senior year; big whup. Why bother getting all excited; I'll just be a freshmen at Hillsborough Community College next year. High school is just an arbitrary stepping-stone on my path to a good career, and certain greatness. The people I've seen really enjoying their Senior Year are those who typically take high school waaaayyy too seriously. Can't say I envy them; I'd much rather just check off the block and continue on. I got the grades, which are all I needed. Let's move on, please. Grranted, I hope Prom and Grad Night are cool. ^^;
It's funny. . .it costs money to live. Living's a "god-given" right, as well as something that should be allowed. Another thing--health care isn't free in this country? I think that's sad. Canada's better than us in that way.
Actually, it doesn't cost money to live, if you really want to get down to it. Enough social programs exist in America to feed you, clothe you, protect you from the elements, give you check ups and even entertain you. And health care is free in America; if you go to an emergency room, you will get treatment no matter what. What you must be asking is, "Why don't we have socialist health care like Canadia"? The reason we don't have it is that it doesn't work. Free market health care is superior in every way, because when doctors work for you and are held accountable for you, they hold the motivation totreat you in the best, most timely matter they can. Socalized doctors answer to a government bueracracy, so you'll be getting as must efficient service there as you would at you local DMV. The average medical patient in Canadia is seen two weeks to a month after asking for an appointment. Sure hope you don't get a heart attack, huh? The fact that about half of Canadia doesn't like their health care system, and are upset at paying more for an inefficient system, should tell us something. So should the fact that roalty from Middle Eastern countries have historically come to America for health care. Wonder why? What does this have to do with anything? Lately, I've been pondering entering politics. I see many problems with the current political scheme. First, the most powerful members of a party are always extremists. I'm not an extremist when it comes to my views; I'm moderatly conservative. The vast majority of the nation isn't Right Wing or Left Wing, itr' moderatly conservative or moderatly liberal. We need more politicians with our mindset. Second, politics has become increasingly nasty in the past ten years. Bush is a moron. Kerry's a tool. Dean's an idiot. Nadar's an egomaniac. What ever happened to working out our differences in a civilized manner? We like to think we've outgrown the kindergarden sandbox arguing, but we haven't. We just use bigger words. ("9/11 is your fault!" Na-uh!" "Uh-huh!" "Na-uh!" "Uh-huh!") Third, I'm tired of politiians who pandser to certain groups. Why are the needs of the AARP more important than mine? The NRA? The ACLU? Fourth, I like to argue. In public. A lot. So, yeah, I might enter politics. Anyone wanna' vote for me? I'll give you a cookie.

The worst (or 'best', in this case) type of villain to face is the one who is clearly doing evil, but who honestly and truely believes that they are doing the right thing. This villain can kill you in some cases, or try to convert you in others. One of my favorite villains was Hank Scorpio from The Simpsons. Sure, he was evil, but he ws a very likable person. I think that you can get one of two really effective vibes from a villian: either they're so alien and inhuman to you that it's a bit disturbing, or they're so human and relatable that you can see their point of view, or see yourself in their position. Depending on how it's presented, that can be equally disturbing. Great villians from fiction include Megatron from Beast Wars, the original HobGoblin from Spider-Man, Uriah Heep from David Copperfield, Mayor Wilkens from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Millions Knies from Trigun, the Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Krang, from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

In my humble opinion, Halle Barrie helped make it one big train wreck. I am very, very sorry, but that woman cannot act. She has all the emotion of a two-by-four; I could forgive an actor/actress having a problem in a role requiring a large spectrum of emotions, but all she had to do in this movie, for the most part, was be scared. It was laughable.

I once wrote this long thesis about Vash symbolically being Jesus Christ, with Rem representing the Virgin Mary, Meryl as Mary Magdolyne, Wolfwood as an apostle, Knives as Satan and the Gung-Ho Gun as demons. If you think of the story as a religious alagory, sort of a re-interpretation of the story of Christ, it adds a slightly different level of interest to the story. I think you could convert more people to Christianity with the ideals of Trigun than watching a man get the living #$%& beat out of him for two hours.

Most anime took its early roots from "Snow White and the SEven Dwarfs"< oddly enough. Disney was huge in Japan, but I don't know if it is anymore. I think that crossing genres and styles is okay, and can usually produce quality results, assuming you have quality creators. However, there are two ways to look at domestic use of Japanese styles, IMO: you can either work with them in an artistic manner, or you can ape it as a shallow excuse to cash in. Example: the Marvel Mangaverse was a huge waste of trees, a group of manga stereotypes that translated into a huge pile of garbage. However, the aforementioned Sknit! was a decent story with some very nice art. It's a little arbitrary, but it's obvious a lot more thought went into that latter project. (Interestingly, Ultimate Spider-Man is the most manga-style title Marvel produces; they just don't know it.) That works both ways, historically. In the seventies, the Japanes take on Spider-Man floundered when they just tryed to repackage the American villains and themes. When they began to use the American style as a guide, instead of forcing themselves into an arbitrary type of storytelling they weren't adjusted to, the comic prospered.

Anime What's your Favorite Anime Soundtrack?
DeathBug replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
Well, I must also put in a vote for Furi Kuri, although it's about tied with Cowboy Bebop. I mean, even my Dad likes Bebop music, and he has zero interest in anime. For some reason, I'm also very partial to Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon music, even though I know it's not the best anime music. It's probably because it's very availibe, and I have a lot of it. -
Correct me if I'm wrong (It happens sometimes) but In the comic books of the Hulk there is no mention of the guy's father killing his mother. Then he kills his father

Actualy, in the comic,
Bruce Banner's father wasn't a scientist or anything. He was an abusive alcoholic whose treatement of Bruce caused the majority of the mental problems that manifest themselves in the Hulk.
But have you noticed all the DC comics that have been redone into movies? There has been Spiderman, Daredevil, The Punisher(which comes to theaters soon), and Hellboy.
Actually, there haven't been any DC movies in the past five years; all of those properties, sans Hellboy, are Marvel Comics properties. Hellboy belongs to an independent publisher whose name escapes me at the moment. You also forgot "Road to Perdition" as being a comic book movie. Besides, one could also argue that Hollywood was never creative to begin with. Out of the vast array of films created and produced in Hollywood every year, a relatiely small margin are any good. ('Good' being completely subjective.) Aside from the rise in sci-fi/fantasy films and comic properties, (which, as much as it pains me to say, is most likely a fad), I think it's business as usual in Hollywood, creativity notwithstanding. Then again, I'm not an expert; that's just my off-the-cuff jugement.
Since this thread is about The Passion, I'll say that I haven't seen this film, and I don't plan to.
Fair enough, but here's what I'm curious about:
And if you think the film doesn't inspire anti-Semitism, then you are simply naive.
So, you haven't seen it, but you've already decided that it's anti-Semetic? I'm afraid there's a flaw in the logic. I haven't seen it either, a niether do I plan to, for reasons explained. And, because of that, I make absolutely no call whether or not it's anti-Semetic. All I know about it is what people tell me, and that varies widely, to say the least. As you can imagine, who saw what in the film depended on the person seeing the film. Saying that racists and extremists see the film is anti-Semetic really doesn't say much, because they will see anti-Semitism everywhere. I've heard, from various people, that it's anti-Semetic, nuetral-Semetic, completely free of anti-Semetism, has anti-Semetism if you go in looking for anti-Semetism, etcetera. I hardly think it fair to judge the movie before seeing it, which is why I don't plan to judge the movie at all.

Condoleezza Rice should not testify to anyone regarding anything. I sayt his not because of any stance of the idea of prior knowledge, but because of the horrible precedent this would set. Rice is the National Security Advisor of the United States. She is privy to knowledge that is incredibly confidential. If she were forced to testify, then her position is worthless; in the future, any information she or future NSAs recieved would be at the mercy of Congress. Any and all National security plans could be broadcast because of partisan politics. It is vitaly important that Rice not testify at all.
Well Carnage isn't that cool, but the Ezekiel thing was the best Ive seen in spiderman comics in a while, the mj story is just I dunno not so interesting, can u tell some of the new stuff that goes now please the last issue I bought was #502 of the amazing spiderman. Thanks anyway.
I'm afraid I haven't been reading Amazing since issue 500, so I couldn't help you. In my opinion, no comic mystery should last over two years. I mean, this thing's taken longer to sort out than the Clone Saga!

Blue Gender is one of the worst anime shows I ever saw, if not the worst. the characters were annoying and boarderline psychotic, and the show seemed to make up its own rules as it went along. The only reason I even watched it was because it aired between Furi Kuri and Inu-Yasha. Another show I cannot stand is the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I simply can't see how anyone could find that entertaining. It's almost sadistic to constantly watch these two dimensional characters continue to suffer in more and more ways. In the end, it just got predictable, mopey, and pathetic. I do'nt see the appeal it apparently had.

I'd love to tell the KKK that they can't publish materials, butt he fact is, that's still censorship. It's unconstitutional. It sucks, but if someone can create andd istribute such materials legally, then noo ne has the right to censor them, no matter how disgsating they are. It's one of the prices one pays for living in a free society. However, we as a whole society can say that we don't want such materials to be part of the public eye, and supress them, forcing them to be distributed privatly.
I don't know where you're from or what you do but you might as well be a conglomorate corporation.
Are you a loyal Yu-Gi-Oh! fan? I wouldn't know. I don't know you. But from your post you seem to be more inclined to be in favour of making money than making or protecting anime. That and "Takashi". It's a win-win thing.
Why did Takahashi write the Yu-Gi-Oh original manga? Why do ANY manga artists become manga artists? Because that's what they are, artists. Do they sell their work? YES. Does that make any of their work any less valuable emotionally to them? NO. If you've actually taken the time to create something, even if it wasn't for yourself, you will feel pretty attached to it and proud if it has matured into something that you can be proud of. A series practically a decade in the making especially.
No one's arguing the value of the work, emotionally or otherwise. I obviously think it's pretty valuble, considering the amount of free time I've spent on it.
Yes, Takahashi is probably getting more money from the American Franchise. Yes, the Japanese companies are probably earning profits also. Takahashi might not watch his characters becoming "Americanized" but when you know someone is destroying something you created, something you poured your heart into, it's kind of hard to ignore. And if you say he did not work hard or care about his manga, you have not seen his more recent volumes.
Takashi-san is still the owner of the property. Depending on his contract, he could stop the production of this film, or make his objections known. He apparently does not object to the "Americanization" of the franchise. Why? Because he probably realises that he is ensuring that he may continue to create this work.
Takahashi will be earning money. But what is this? Money over matter? Why must money be the object that destroys everything? It destroys lives, people, why must it now take over Anime? Anything they were to do to Yu-Gi-Oh would become Yu-Gi-Oh by defenition. Money is allowing YGO to continue; were there no cash in the property, everyone would pack it up and go home.
Why must the American Companies that kill everything when the Japanese are obviously[/i'] creating a success from the phenomenon.
Or maybe the product was originally intended for a vastly different culture than America, and the American importers feel that the series won't be successful if they culture and material weren't altered. Think about it: It costs more money toi make changes than to leave the work alone. every script re-write, every scene alteration costs money. Obviously, they wouldn't do this unless they felt there was a great need to. Now, I disagree on a lot of the changes they make. But when they're pouring a lot of money into these changes, so they obviously believe they are neccessary.
No, few people will make things for free. There are not many people who like being a starving artist. But if the Japanese Companies don't have to change anything, why must the Americans?
Again, how can the Japanese companies change the product they release?
If they don't like something, don't change it. If they wont make money from that, DON'T BUY INTO IT. Especially don't buy into something if you're going to just change it into another american stereotypical cartoon. The plot of this 'anime' is laughable. Has it been done in Yu-Gi-Oh! before? No. Has it been done before? YES. Revenge? Taking over the world? Please. If I can't go to a blockbuster and pull 10 movies off the new releases or cartoon shelves I will eat my hat. Hey I have an idea, let's compare this plot with American Comics! Revenge? The Joker fell in a vat of acid and came back for revenge. The Riddler was fired by Wayne Enterprises. Came back for revenge. Posion Ivy's lab was *something* by Wayne Enterprises. Came back for revenge. The Penguin was raised by birds. :drunk: On to Spiderman. The Green Goblin lost his company's project to another company. Came back for revenge. The Green Goblin was killed by Spiderman. His son came back for revenge. And that' s just from two comics... OH! And Taking over the world??? That is a joke. No, really, it's a running gag on Kim Possible that takes advantage of that age old stereotype that villains want to "TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" If the s*itload of villains in that series aren't enough to show how corny that topic is, we could always ask Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff girls to help us with examples. -_-
Hmmm..... Kaiba looses a duel to Yugi. He sends him and his friends through a demented fun house for....
Yami Bakura watched his village being slaughtered. He attacks the Pharoh for...
Noa Kaiba screws with Seto and Mokuba repeatedly for... The Big Five screw with Seto for... Revenge is hardly an American concept. I can think of a dozen different anime shows where a factor in the character's behavior is revenge. And taking over the world? Can we ask Yami Bakura, both Mariks, or Gozoboro Kaiba about that?
The point is, that theme is worn out. Do we know much about the plot? No, I'll give you that, but what more do we need to know? I'll keep an open mind and watch the movie, but I can not lie about what is truth. The American corporation changed an original and fun manga concept, a boy playing games with a dark spirit inside of him, to another stereotypical sell-out. Does money run the world? Maybe. That would mean that it's money that is destroying this work that so many have loved for years. That's enough to make a fuss about. -ArV
And I would tell you that if you are opposed to the movie, vote with your wallet and don't go. I don't plan to simply because I think it will be shallow and uninteresting. But, the fact remains, I want YGO projects to make money, even if I don't like all of them. (I, for instance, have no desire to own a YGO beach towel.) That will ensure that the story and game that I do enjoy keeps coming out.
In my opinion, material that contains swearing, sex and violence is fine, when it comes to literature. What is not fine, is if some one tried to publish a book that was racist, sexist or a fine example of any other -ism. Hate material is different from bold self-expression.
I'm not trying to call Godelsensi out in particular, but the way of thinking that statement represents is a bit flawed in the least, and dangerous at the most. If I'm Amish, profanity, sex and violence are just as offensive to me as sexist jokes are to a woman, or racist jokes are to a minority. If I'm a rascist, what I'm saying wouldn't be hate material; it would be bold self-expression, because I would believe in the message. Do you get the problem? What is hateful or offensive is relative. The general society must reach a consensus on what is acceptable to be out in the public. To view swearing, sex and violence as "fine" while "-isms" aren't is hypocritical. Yes, the "-isms" listed are incredibly offensive, and most educated people would find them pointless. And I wouldn't mind, personally, if the people who espout hate material collectivly decided to shut the hell up. But the fact remnains that censorship and freedom of speech are two-way streets. You must take the bad with the good. The problem with censorship is that most people view it in "All or nothing" terms; as in, either there can be any and all sorts of sex and violence everywhere, or you're trying to strip away our freedom of expression. Like I said before, though, the society must agree on a set of boundaries. Porn, for example, is produced. As a society, the majority of us decided that it wasn't appropriate for the public eye. You can still get it, but you have to get it through different channels. (Figurativly and literally.) Do I think things should be censored willy-nilly on the chance that some might find it offensive? No. However, do I think that any forms of expression should be paraded about in the public eye? Also, no. Balance is needed. The problem today is that it seems the political and social scenes are becoming increasingly polarized, with little room for compromise. Oh, and even if you disagree with conservative or religiously-minded folks who try to censor things on grounds you don't agree with, you must still remember thatt heir political voie is just as valid as yours is, even if you think differently from them. Like I said, two-way street. :D
