1. Having a job in art is bloody fantastic, unless like me you end up crippled from all the years of scribbling away for your employer. While I don't have the rights to post SOME of my past professional work (Darn pigs wouldn't part with snot), I will post some of my personal stuff and the work I have done since turning freelance.   First off, I'd like to share my latest commission.   Client: Name Witheld Price: £23 (New years discount) Dimensions: 1000 x 1000 Pixels Subject: Client's son as a superhero.

 3. Hello everyone,   I am posting on behalf of Playing Grounded Puzzles, a start up toy company in Pennsylvania.  We are currently in the process of starting a Kickstarter for unique artwork, photography, and anime to be produced as 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles!  We're undertaking this very unique and fun endeavor to license so many artworks and bring them into fans' homes in a fresh and affordable way. We are working on gaining rights for a few anime artworks to be featured (can't disclose which ones quite yet ;) ). Why am I posting here?  Well, we are interested in gaining as much feedback before we launch the Kickstarter.  We would love to know where you, the dedicated fans, stand on such an idea?  Would you be interested in puzzles or do you think it's a silly idea?  Any specific series you would want to see as a puzzle?  Would you be interested in backing this if we launch the Kickstarter?   Feel free to throw any ideas or feedback you have this way.  Your input is very much appreciated!!   While there is no anime up on the site yet, it will be in the coming weeks so please check back. :D   Thank you very much!   www.playinggroundedpuzzles.com -Zak

 6. I haven't posted any artwork here in years! I used to love posting my drawings and graphics here. Anyway, these are random drawings that I've done over the past year or so. I haven't had a working scanner in five years, so these pictures were taken with my iPod. So I do apologize. After I moved out I've moved every year, and through that time I never had a consistent computer set up. Now my scanner is outdated... The first image I did in a notebook for a college English class. It's a Muay Thai fighter. The second is various Dragonball Z sketches. Vegeta is actually a couple years old, I just used the same page for the other characters. This is just a random drawing. This one looks better in color, but I don't have that on my iPod. The last image was actually a gift for my friend's baby shower. I used the wrapping paper inside out and drew a picture in each little square. There's more squares filled than what is shown but I won't bore you with that... I have a lot more, but I don't take a picture of all my art, these i just happened to have on my iPod so i thought I would share them.
 7. I draw various things, from realism to manga.   Here is a just a few of my better works

This thread is to serve as the general starters point for any beginning artist visiting OtakuBoards. So the idea is that this thread will be an ever-growing bunk of information to help you on your way! Also, in the nearby future you will see a variety of tutorials popping up, covering all sorts of subjects in all sorts of art media. These tutorials are made by our very own members and are meant to help you, but also to share ideas and start discussions on how things are done! I'd like to encourage everybody to post up their own tutorials and to comment on the tutorials of others, but also to share links to tutorials you thought are helpful and are anywhere else on the internet, and sites to free fonts/brushes et cetera! I'll link to everything in this very post. Also, feel free to give suggestions and ask any questions, about the tutorials or any general question about art! 9. Not sure if anyone will enjoy this or not, but I figured why not?  I created a fanfiction of sort for the game series "Dead or Alive" by using the creation tools found in the WWE video games. The video is overly long and it takes a while for the pace to pick up, but any feedback is welcomed. Thanks to any who take the time to watch.   If interested the rest of the videos can be found at me and my brothers youtube page at- Dead or Alive: Wrestling
 10. Hey guys.  So a few weeks ago some friends and I did a video about learning the Kamehameha wave (and what happens if you lose focus).  I animated it in After Effects and I thought it was cool seeing a technique from an iconic anime in a live action short, so here it is for you guys to check out too!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m37nRVc_al8   What did you guys think?

 13. Hello everybody, I'm new here and like some of you I LOVE to draw, especially anime and manga. So, to begin my OB existence I'm going to post some of my works, one by one, and please, give me some feedback on them. This first one is a girl. She's like ascending underwater. I goes with another picture that I'm finishing, wich is a boy descending towards her. It was made to be hung on the walls in my room. I love to draw hair and you will probably see that (took me a while to figure out how hair behaves in a braid though.) Hope you all like it. PS: I also had a full color one, but I'll have to reduce the size of it in order to post it here. till then, stick with my monocromatic underwater girl.
 14. (As requested) Everyone always asks me just how much money I make as a professional artist. The thing is, it always depends. Should you be picked up by a company, you will be paid a set wage. However, since I am now freelance it is much different. Each job is different and therefore the quoted price is different. There are always different factors that need to be added up. For example:

Number of commissions
Size of comission(s)
Materials used
Time spent
Medium used
These are all important in giving a fair and accurate quote. My answer to the question of how much I make? 'Never enough.' The truth of the matter is that you can never make it a main occupation when you begin. You do not have a stable customer base and the art world is always changing. What is popular one month could be out the next. Do not go into it with any misconceptions. You will not be an instant millionaire. Will I Need Qualifications? Yes and no. For a job at a studio or a company they will generally require qualifications. Unless you know someone in the company, it can be quite difficult to get in. For freelance work, it's not needed. Though clients will prefer to see that you have qualifications over not having any. Every little helps, after all. What Qualifications Do I need/Should I Get? It all depends on what you want to do. It always helps to study fine art and art history. Design is always a good option as well. Some find that places offer an illustration course and if this is the sort of work you are interested in, by all means go for it. Technical drawing is not needed, but it can open up more opportunities. How Do I Make Money Then? Ah. Yes. Let's get down to business. Firstly, you will need to have a game plan. What soret of art are you producing? Who would you say is your best target audience? How much are you spending on supplies? And what are your future goals? I will now post a list of basics that will hopefully help you get started. Portfolio This is one of the most important things for an artist just starting out. It would be best to have an online and offline portfolion. And online portfolio can be on an art site, but it looks much better when on your own site. You can use the readily availible site builders out there to create a stylish site in minutes. (I recommend wix.com) The site should be simple, easy to read and understand and have clear directions to your portfolio gallery. You should also have a contact page and an about page. Be sure to list any relevant info on your about page. (IE: Qualifications, age, history with art etc.) An offline portfolio should be a folder that you can carry with you when you need it. It should have a mixture of various types of work. If you do digital art, print out examples. Sketches should also be added to give an idea of the stages of your artwork as it takes shape. Should you be a painter, print out shots of your work, rather than toting the canvas in the folder. It would damage too easily. Another option is to purchase USB memory sticks. Only small, cheap ones are needed. There is no need to go overboard on cost. Then you can upload an array of art on that and hand it to potential clients, or gallery owners. (This is not required, but it can't hurt.) Costing The best way of going about pricing your commissions is to provide personal quotes. However, if you would prefer set prices, I would recommend using a percentage system. Work out how much your art supplies cost, for example, and create a percentage based on that + hours spent. You can also create an hourly rate, but I do not recommend this for starters. Protect Your Work Remember to keep your work safe. Never hand over the finished product until payment has been received. Should you need to show examples, make sure to watermark them if didgital and send photos of traditionally created art. This way, your client can't scarper with the finished product and skip out on paying. This also applies to all portfolio shots. Watermark and sign them whenever possible. Base Of Operations You can choose to either trade via email (Which you can do via your website), sell finished work or commissions on sites such as Ebay and Etsy, or you can create a shopping cart section on your site. (For offline info, see 'Advertising') Art Type It's a very common thing for creative people to have their fingers in too many pies. Sometimes you can't resist giving a new idea a chance and it can lead to heaps of unfinished projects. This is why you need to stick to your guns. Choose the art type you want to be selling and stick to it. When you are more secure and have a good customer base, THEN you can try your hand at other types of art (IE: Sculpture, jewellery, etc.) Stick to what you are best at. Advertising You can never advertise too much! Get yourself online and set yourself up on sites. Add yourself to artist listings and art related business sites. Another good way of getting known is to have a business card. You can find places who print them out for reasonable prices and they are of a decent enough quality. (For UK people, I recommend Vistaprint. For US try Zazzle.com!) One way of getting into the swing of things is to vist local galleries and art shops. Hand over your cards at as many places as you can. Visit shops that you feel may have a customer base that would be interested in purchasing art. Get talking to people. Gather interest. Also, I highly recommend signing up for sites such as LinkedIn. That way you can network with people who may be able to help you. (You can find me here: http://uk.linkedin.com/in/meltycat) Another site would be Skillpages.com. This is a site where people post jobs and people can apply for them. Some are paid and some are unpaid, but it looks GREAT on the old CV. You can also add these to your portfolio information. Another way of getting noticed is to offer other sites and artists an affiliates program where you post a link to their site on yours and vise-versa. This can often help more than you may think. Should the artist be quite well-known, then your link will be seen by all of them. And it is a form of endorsement. It may sound really stingy, but never pay for something you can get for free! Advertising is one of them. While paid advertising can be good, free listings can also be just as effective! I hope this has helped some. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask in the comments.

 17. As of late I haven't been too active on this forum nor have I been doing a lot of stuff I like from classes..(starting to get into more interesting stuff that I enjoy though..) Solution : rejected sketches from this morning..! Hahaha! Out of the 12 I did, these are the ones that I liked sketching but knew they were not acceptable for the assignment. I have reverted back to my freshman conceptual nonsense. I have to work on that again..(sigh) These are some of sketches based off the story of Genie, a severe case of social isolation from the '70's. My heart goes out to her. <3
 18. So, pretty much anyone who's been around the site and seen me around the site knows I'm a halfway decent writer. But I'm not the only one in my family with artistic inclinations. All three of my sisters are heavy into the visual arts, and their tastes range from sculpting to charcoal to graphic design, to these little, six-inch, ridiculously intricate clay people who, like, dude. Holy crap. Not gonna show any of those right now. What I do want to show off is a small upload of a piece my second sister worked on for a couple of weeks. Medium was acrylic on newspaper-covered canvas. She has also done a 3D-illusion mural of a cheesecake for a local dessert place. Seriously.
 19. Not sure when this was done last, but regardless I'm interested in seeing what everyone's computer desktop looks like. Feel free to show your actual desk as well. To make things interesting why not also talk a bit about your setup. I'll start: This is my Desktop which is currently running the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. My wallpaper is something from www.theotaku.com . I chose Linux as my operating system because Windows is less secure for a variety of reasons. I dual boot with Windows and Linux on both my desktop computer and my netbook.
 20. Art trades can be both fun and great for practice. How does an art trade work? Simple. You post your terms (What you are willing to draw and what you will not draw.), how many trade slots you are willing to open up (IE: Three at a time.) and also (If you already have it in mind.) what you want from a trade, then people can request trades with you. Discuss what each of you want if you are unsure and draw your pictures. Sound fun? Post your terms and start trading today! ------------------------------------- Axel's Terms I accept trades from anyone and accept any skill level, even doodles (You'll just get like for like.), so don't be scared to request a trade. Won't Do: Coloured work - Unless it's a commission, I dislike doing coloured work. So just be warned. c: Although I may tint the picture for you if you want. Specific styles - I have my own style that I have adapted over the many, many years I have been doing art. I would like to keep it. Hentai/Full frontal nudity - I will accept mild smut though. ;D Will Do: Sketches/Inked lineart OC's Fanart of any kind Transformers/Robots Smut Furries Animals/Monsters/Pokemon/Digimon Short stories Songs/Poems What I Want: To be honest, I want anything based on any of the characters or fandoms I have in my gallery. I'm a sucker for romance, so pics of the couplings in it are very, VERY welcome. Examples: Gru x Rachel Ionia x Acid Storm Ionia x Perceptor Ionia x Yoketron Dr Tenma x Rachel Fireman Sam x Rachel Open Slots

1 - EMPTY
2 - EMPTY
3 - EMPTY
23. Hello! This is something I hadn't noticed as a subject yet, so here we go. I drew this for Christmas and I wanted to know if anyone else can guess which character this is and from what show! Btw, I sketched this on paper, scanned it, and then outlined/colored/shaded it using Paint Tool SAI. If you want, you can also post links to your Christmas-related fan-art too! (has to be SFW)
 24. Do you draw mostly fan art or do you tend to draw up original works? I started out doing mostly fan art, but now my gallery is 95% original work, including some OC's from various anime. But even that is far in between. And when you do draw original work, is it entierly a work of it's own, or is it loosely based on an anime series? What inspires you to pick up your pencil and not put it down till the blisters are forming? :)
