Ugh...dunno. I'm just a believer of the philosophy that humans will do anything to survive in the end. Unless...they're QUITTERS. Jk jk.
Why Jk? I think that's a fair statement... humans (well, most of them, anyway) have an instinct to survive & when faced with circumstances that threaten their lives, will behave on the pure instinct of self preservation.
[/color']Would I eat another human being? Hm...good question. I probably would if it meant I would survive. At the moment, disgusting, but whatever. Would a person kill someone else to eat them? I believe it could happen.
Again, I think self-preservation can make a person do things that they typically wouldn't even imagine that they could be capable of.
I think, rather than killing the human, if their is a way to cut off one of their limbs in a fight, then do that. It's not as though you have enough space in your stomach to eat the entire body. That would be a waste of another person's life. (Sorry to get into the gruesome details). I wasn't talking about actually killing someone to be used as food- that's a whole different issue- I meant, if they were already dead and you were dying of starvation... would you eat (some of) their body in order to survive?
I have actually eaten cats and dogs while abroad, not too bad to be honest, human's however I would never eat regardless of the situation, it's just plain wrong You fail to explain why it's wrong. Why would eating a human be anymore wrong than eating an animal that many consider to be a part of the family, such as a cat or dog?

Hmmm... I grew up in places where if you were white, you were the minority and I experienced the "anti-white" discrimination in many forms- from my fellow students and peers to my teachers and administrators. It isn't a fun situation, but I think I always perceived it as the backlash that occurs because of the oppression that white people subjected other cultures to. I never really took it very seriously, in other words... not even when my girl scout leader tried to kill me by forcing me to eat raw squid (knowing that I was allergic to seafood) simply because I was white and I was "insulting her culture" by not eating it... I got really sick... and she thought it was funny, because it served me right... "Hauli" and "gringa" were used so often to insult me that the words lost their meaning and their derrogatory effect... Right now, I'm in a position in which I have had to tolerate discriminatory attitudes because my friend isn't white and I am (well- I look pretty white, anyway). When we're at the bar together, Native women come up to me and tell me that if he mistreats me in any way, they'll take him down, etc... because he's Native and is automatically assumed to be an alcoholic and an abuser. I simply say "thanks" and leave it at that... But these attitudes can be found even within the group being discriminated against- as is the case with my friend- his fellow Natives stereotype him into being a drunken, woman-beating jerk... it's not just one ethnicity against another...stereotypes cross all lines, borders, and societies.

I think the mods here at OB do a wonderful job, and I do not envy the position one bit. I would not want the responsibility of monitoring everyone's threads and posts- it's too much akin to babysitting... and I don't have the patience required for the job. I'm glad that there are apt individuals that enjoy that responsibility and are willing to put up with the frustrating aspects of moderating, and I have a lot of respect for what they do... but I'd have to say "No way in hell..." if I was ever asked to be one of them.
I do believe that kids--yeah, even the twelve and thirteen-year-olds who come to OB desperately asking for advice--know what love is. Let me qualify--they know what love is to them, at that point in their lives. It's a dynamic concept. It changes as you grow up, as you mature, as you fall in and out of it, as you watch others and their experiences, as you live your own experiences. I agree. When you are a child, you love in a childish way, but it is still love. As you mature, so does your personal definition of love, but that does not mean that it becomes any more real than it was when you were younger- the concepts and dynamics simply shift to accommodate the way that a person thinks about things as they mature.

While reading the vegetarian thread, I began thinking about cannibalism, as I always do when I ponder vegetarianism...hmmm...strange quirk, I know, but I think it's a logical mental link... I hear so many people talk about how they love meat and could never give it up because it tastes so good, but when I ask them if they would eat a cat or a dog or a human, they cringe and claim that they would rather starve to death. Meat is meat, isn't it? Personally, I almost never eat meat... maybe once or twice a year... but if I had to, I really wouldn't have any moral objection to eating a human. An objection of taste, maybe, but I definitely don't think the consumtion of a human would damn me to the eternal pyre, so to speak... If I were in a situation in which there were only dead humans available to eat, I wouldn't think twice about it... So- in a situation in which no other food was available, would you eat a person in order to survive, or would you rather starve to death?

The inhumane treatment of animals is a horrible reality, but that fact alone does not deter me from eating meat. If the commercial world collapsed and we had to go back to a hunter/gatherer society I really wouldn't have any problem with impaling a deer with an arrow. It's survival, that's all. But since we live in a processed foods society, and I can go pick up a bottle of iron supplements when I need to, I almost never eat meat... because I just don't like it. There are too many micro-organisms and parasites and crap in there... whether the animal has been kept at a farm or was running free until it was killed. It's just gross... I'm really not one to mourn the life of a McRib sandwich, though... I have much more important things to think about in my life than the source of energy I'm consuming.

Request: Did we really go to the moon?
elfpirate replied to Roxie Faye's topic in General Discussion
" Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it." Anyone here, feel free to correct me on this, because I'm confident in my position. But the force applied to the flag [i.e. it's motion] when he was 'wriggling' it from side to side as the flag was mounted, would be expended. The flag wouldn't keep waving. Waving, or rippling, requires a constant force. I know about rockets, because a body without the exertion of any other force upon it, will continue as it was. Such as a rocket. "Tremendously weak" the Moon's gravity may be, when compared to ours, but it is more than enough to cause a flag to hang down, lol. You're not the only person here who has studied physics. I have to agree with the baron- it's the law of kinetic energy... and I also believe that the moon landing really happened. You can see their footprints on the moon's surface if you are fortunate enough to have a good telescope and know where to look. And -about the flag and whether or not it would continue its pattern of motion-any amount of gravity would eventually diminish the energy needed to sustain the flapping of a flag in the absence of the original cause of energy (the astronaut). It just takes longer on the moon for a flag to drop than it does on earth. The earth's gravity will pull a flag down quickly when the external force is removed (wind, etc...) but because there is less energy and force in the gravitational pull of the moon, it occurs at a slower rate... but it has to occur if there is no other force acting upon it. -
My riddle: Alice is walking throught the forest of forgetfulness. She wants to know what day of the week it is. She stops and asks a lion and a unicorn. Now the lion lies all of the time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The unicorn always lies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Alice asks the lion what day it is, he says, "Well yesterday was one of my lieing days." Well Alice cant figure it out just from the Lions answer so she asks the unicorn and the unicorn says, "Yesterday was also one of my lieing days." What day is it? Hmmm... I've been up for days on end again, but I'm going to pretend that my powers of logic are intact right now and guess that it's Thursday and that the unicorn is lying... @Lennex3- isn't that the riddle Gollum asks Bilbo in the cave in The Hobbit? I haven't read it since I was 8 or 9 but... isn't it?
*scratches head* I'm really confused, haha. I thought I had- Birth control pills and other hormonally- based birth control methods are often used to restore the normal levels of hormones in a woman's body... curing problems with irregular menstrual cycles, cramping, and mood swings, among other things. They also give Depo Provera (the shot) to inmates that are overly aggressive or are overly sexually violent...
Tattle tail is a rather childish term, isn't it? If someone is smoking a cigarette, I couldn't care less. Something like marijuana, a hallucinogen, on the other hand could endanger them or could end up disrupting the school. I've known people who do cocaine in our school, given, I didn't tell the teachers about that. They actually offered me some and I turned it down, I was worried that they would come and beat the crap out of me if I told anyone. A hallucinogen could and most probably would cause them to be rowdy and personally I don?t want people like that in my lessons disrupting my education which I have a right to. But if someone has been smoking then you should have the right to tell a teacher, as it is illegal. Basically you are saying that if I saw someone murder another I shouldn't tell the police because that would be 'telling' and 'everyone breaks the law sometimes'. I?m sorry, but your attempt at making me feel guilty leaves a gaping hole for other excuses. Laws are there for a purpose; in the case of ULX he was treated a little more extreme than he probably should have been for someone just saying he smelt of spoke. But like I say again, the law is there for a purpose, I refuse to be pulled into a debate over it. You think this law is unjust, tell the government. Woah! Uh... relax, Mr Defensive! I wasn't calling anyone in particular a tattle-tale... but I guess it was one of those "intent vs interpretation" kind of deals, neh? Anyway, all I was saying is that there are other ways of going about it than to narc- if your primary concern is for the user. But if you are seriously worried about a pot-smoker freaking out and getting *ahem* "rowdy"... and therefore disrupting your learning process... all I have to say is HAHAHAHAHAHA-- Sorry... here- some seriousness: Pot smokers are some of the laziest, do-nothing, monotonous, civilly behaved people there are... because they don't have the energy to do otherwise. They might display some gross eating habits sometimes, but they're usually harmless... and they don't care enough about your learning process to disrupt it... if they even bother to be in school to begin with... And- pot is not an hallucinogenic drug. It doesn't cause hallucinations like LSD and PCP and 'shrooms... and all the other true hallucinogens. But- cocaine is a heavy CNS stimulant known to cause sudden mood swings... and, specifically: sudden, unpredictable violent outbursts. Yet you didn't turn in the kids that were using it ... nor did you worry about their use of cola disrupting your class somehow... is it because they offered to share? I wonder...tee hee... SO- no, I wasn't calling you, personally, a tattle-tale... but I am now calling you a hypocrite (and an uneducated one at that) on this particular issue. And I didn't say that the anti-cannabis law was unjust... I only implied it... so...nyah... how's that for childish? For those of you who are curious--no, I'm not a pothead... ...anymore... :smirk:

This is a great thread :) and I've got lots of stories to tell... so I'll start by saying that I've been "haunted" since I was little (like 3 years old). Spirits seem to follow both me and my older brother... showing up wherever we move to. At my dad's current house, there have been so many incidents that at least 4 non-believers have had to change their minds after staying there... and they start believing... When I was staying there, there were two things that happened all the time that scared me every time (never got used to it). One was a "shadow person" that lingered in the doorway of the basement bathroom and laundry room. It didn't matter how dark it was down there- he was darker still... and he would watch you if you were in the basement... you could tell he was looking right at you... and he gave off a feeling of pure hatred and evil...like he would kill you if he could... The other was... I would be talking to my dad or my boyfriend about whatever was on my mind, and they would get up and start walking away, beckoning me to follow and keep talking, so I'd walk along behind them and they would go downstairs and into the bathroom/laundry room area... and as soon as I would cross the doorway where the shadow man stood, my dad or boyfriend would disappear and I would be standing down there alone. Sometimes, they didn't take me to the basement, but would just turn a corner upstairs and vanish.... Not once did I suspect that it wasn't really my dad or my boyfriend that I was following- they looked real and solid and they were breathing and making the old stairs creak, etc...but it wasn't them... I've got tons more, but I've gotta save them for later... I have an appointment to go to  .

Yeah- Billy Shears- you got it...it was shadow. Sorry I don't have one to contribute right now... I had intended to be more involved with this thread but I got...uh...distracted... @Baron Samedi- is it "Bob and Dick bought a dog" ?
But on another note of what happened to you, ULX. I think you have to see it from their point of view. I can understand that you?re annoyed about being falsely accused for something that drastic but I would have told a teacher if I smelt someone and I thought they?d been smoking. I?m not saying you don?t have a right to be annoyed, but maybe you just have to look at it form another side of the argument?it is the law, after all. Why would you tell the teacher if someone else smelled like smoke? That just makes you a snitch. If you were concerned for the person regarding their use, you could try talking to them first and let them know that they smell of smoke... instead of simply being a tattle-tale. Everyone breaks the law sometimes... they don't all have to be turned in... and not all laws are just...
Also, it's almost impossible to create a female viagra: women's sex systems are just far more complicated than originally expected. One hormone triggers a cascade, with various checkpoints. At the same time, if two hormones within the cascade are in large amounts at the same time, they may actually hinder sexual activity instead of setting off the series of events. So, administration of a few hormones and a sprinkle of a few "feel-good" chemicals just isn't the answer for women. (women are "ewww" when it comes to reproductive systems *shudders*) Do you not know that Viagra also works in women to restore their sex drive and that there are quite a few other drugs on the market that effectively do the same? In fact, women need a certain amount of testosterone to trigger their sex drives (in conjunction with their more "womanly" hormones). But that is not the issue here. The fact is that men are favored by both the government and by the insurance companies. If it were the man's responsibility to menstruate, get pregnant and have children, you can bet that birth control would be covered by the insurance companies. Most of the women that I know who take the pill take it to regulate their hormones and their periods (and to control PMS so they don't freak out every month). And I have never heard of a man taking Viagra for his moods... unless you count the cancellation of his sexual frustration as mood regulation.;) I think that if Viagra is covered, there is no reason for birth control not to be covered. It has nothing to do with science, hormones, or chemicals- it has everything to do with politics and sexism. and...ahem!...our reproductive systems are amazing- not eeew... we can build life with all that "eeewie" stuff in there... beat that.
I always do whenever somebody asks me a question in the lines of "does this shade make me look fat?" Being honest=Big favor. I try not to be blunt about it, though; it would be pretty awkward if I just said "Yeah, it does." I really think it depends on the person who is insecure enough to ask whether or not they look fat in something- if it's someone who's self-esteem is extrememly fragile, I think it's better to lie and tell them they look fine than to say "yeah- you look kind of big in that" and have them throwing up their meals for the next month... I mean- by all means, be honest when the person can handle the truth- but be gentle when they can't...(sometimes lying is the only way to be gentle)

I've been falsly accused of a great number of things... but the worst was when my own mother accused me of stealing syringes out of her medical supply bag (she's a midwife). It wasn't resolved for a long time, but she eventually realised that I'm always honest with her and that I always hone up to my crimes when confronted... well... I hone up to her, anyway... it's a little grey when it comes to the authorities... If I were you, I'd demand that they give you a urine analysis (if you're really out to prove your innocence... and if you really are as innocent as you claim to be). Then, you won't have to worry about it... and they'll owe you an apology for stereotyping you when the test comes back negative.
I'm generally an honest person. But I can also be the most convincing actor you'll ever meet. I can lie my way out of just about any situation that might be hazardous to some aspect of my being. And, unlike many liers, I remember my lies. I'm barely ever caught in a lie, and when I am, I own up to it. Ha ha- me too- that's how I've stayed out of jail all these years... but I can't remember ever being caught in a lie... not since I was about 6 years old, anyway... I only lie when I feel like I really have to, though... and I don't come across a lot of situations where I do feel that I have to... and I don't lie to my family and friends... unless it's one of those "innocent" white lies.
Being a "lone wolf" is really the most fun. Nobody expects you to follow the crowd, be like them. Although you do get made fun of sometimes, it's better (in my opinion). Discuss (Pirates) Scourge of the Spanish Main (M-VL)
elfpirate replied to Drix D'Zanth's topic in Theater
Okay... I'm posting again, as promised. Age: unknown- late teens/early twenties, as far as anyone can tell Name: Rowan...? (Surname unknown) Weapons: Usually a pair of hand-crafted twin blades, though sometimes uses other blades such as knives or a single Scottish bastard sword. Appearance: Rowan is average in height but has small bone-structure, and her strength is often underestimated because of her size and gender. She wears comfortable, loose-fitting attire that would be considered "unladylike" for the times... but that allow her the freedom of movement in battle. Dressed all in black, her accessories include her dual back-scabbord- which is tied with a red sash and outfitted with her favorite (self-forged)twin swords, her boots, an intricately embossed pair of leather bracers (containing the knives she will sometimes use), her gauntlets, and a red ribbon in her braided, raven-black hair. She wears a small, close-fitting locket of silver around her neck with the simple rune for "strength" engraved upon its cover. She has tattoos like thin, delicate war-paint streaks across her cheeks and a scar across her left brow... presumably from a blade of some sort... but it does not detract from her beauty. Bio: No one knows much about her (or her past) but that she escaped capture when the armada overcame the last vessel she was aboard and hanged its captain and crew... and that now she silently thirsts to avenge them. Judging by her accent (though she seldom speaks) ,she hails from the land of the red-haired Saxons. She sees her crew as her family and the sea and vessel as her home, and is therefore loyal to the death to both captain and crew. Although she is small and quiet, she is a swift, strong, and lethal opponent- using it to her advantage that she is underestimated by her enemies. Though she is both humble and quiet, when her blades are drawn, blood and death are emminent. No one would accuse her of arrogance... just of being extraordinarily skilled at what she does. Her new crew likes and respects her, but she remains a mystery to them... at least for now... Sorry I don't have a picture to post- I guess you'll just have to imagine my character...:smirk: I'll edit my journal entry to include a journal date and to edit the dialect for the character's accent. If you have any questions, suggestions, etc... just PM me. -
Here's one: It's only there when something else is gone It can be short and can be long When night-time comes, it takes a break & even when you walk behind it, It follows every move you make It's an easy one, I know... but oh well...

I was thinking about honesty, and the things I lie about- well, more accurately, the things I don't lie about... and I decided to pose the question to you all. How honest are you? Do you always tell the truth? What about those little "white lies" like: No, honey- you don't look fat in those jeans... Is it okay to lie sometimes, or is it always wrong/hurtful? I'm almost always honest- to a fault sometimes. Lying just seems pointless to me most of the time. I do, however, tell an occasional white lie- when the feelings of someone I really care about are at stake and my lying won't be of any consequence whatsoever. (ie: trivial matters that aren't worth hurting the person's feelings over) And I will lie (and have lied) when a cop is close to arresting me for something and a lie will make him go away... I don't think I've lied to anyone I care about (when it was something important) since I was really little. Now, I am more likely to be brutally honest instead... and you wouldn't believe how many people would rather be lied to... Well, how 'bout you? Are you a big fat liar or an honest abe or do you fall somewhere in between?

Are you a leader or a follower? Or perhaps both or neither? I'm usually neither... I'm usually the "lone wolf" type, though every once in a while, a few others will stray from the pack and decide to follow me- I'm not exactly sure why. I've never been the type to be a follower, though... and I really don't have any desire to lead others. I'd rather just do my own thing, and if someone decides to follow- well, that's their decision... doesn't much matter to me... And I will take the leader position if I must, but I'd prefer to do my own thing... So what are the rest of you? And why do consider yourself to be one or the other, etc... (And please- I'm aware of the whole "evils of labelling and classification" mantra, so let's avoid the parroting of that lecture, okay? The thread wasn't started to brand anyone... I'm just curious about how you see yourselves on this topic...)
