Originally posted by Juuthena Then, of course, Chinese New Year, and I always have to bow to my grandparents, family, friends of family...etc. I also have to helpp my parents make Gojas for the big party, too.
Huh?? I thought you were Korean?? Hmm....so does that mean you get showered with money? Gotta love those lil' red pouches. :)
2.
Originally posted by Mystic's Knight :) I know, but threads dont just get accidentally deleted. I would have no doubt that James just went and found anything NBL related and got rid of it...
Er....plausible. But not quite. :D The Down with Newbie Lounge Petition thread thingy is still around. But now we're getting into the area of forum policy, something I do not want to do, so I'll stop here.
3. Well that would be assuming it was deleted in the first place. And that James did the deleting. And I'm trying not to make assumptions. Hence the open post. [EDIT]Thread was located in the Fan Fiction/Poetry forum. It was a poem. :D But you recently added Literature to the name.[/EDIT]
4. I might be mistaken, so I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, but after doing a couple of searches I failed to locate my Remembering NL poem. I was looking for it because there was a couple of lines from it I wanted to adapt for a poem for a friend for Xmas. I can't quite get the lines right. In any case, the poem and thread seems to have disappeared. For any of the mods or admins out there who may have an answer, was the thread deleted? A simple yes or no will suffice. If yes, no explanation is necessary nor requested. I'm trying very hard to be civil. If I am mistaken, can you please direct me to the thread? Thanks. :D
5. Sara: Yes you were right. Kinda... ;) But, me being the stupid git that I am, I found it a little confusing. :D Deus; Well yes, but small is big when it comes to computer technology. :) Cloricus; There is a physical barrier when it comes to silicon chips. You can only fit so much, no matter how small you make things. Beyond that you are in the realm of quantum mechanics and nanotechnology. There are also a couple of other ways to break the barrier. One avenue is photonics, another is the manipulation of molecular biology and the use of biological chemistry.
6. This wouldn't happen to be the Moore's Law that has computer processing power doubling every 18 months would it? Well computer chips are in everything these days, so no doubt this has a big impact on our lives. But Moore's Law in the near future will come up against a physical barrier. Unless there is a 'quantum' leap in technology (pun intended), this physical barrier cannot be surmounted. Time will tell if Moore's Law will continue to hold.
7. Yoshi's got it right. :D We're dealing with a converging series, ie an infinite series with a finite sum. The paradox is only possible if one assumes that the sum of an infinite set of numbers is infinite. This, as we know, is not the case.
8. The situation between you and your mom is one that you need to sort out. Since I don't you, I'll leave that one alone. As for Lisa, this situation has disaster written all over it, if I'm reading your post correctly. Loneliness and an ex do not a good combination make, esp during the festive season. The advice is simple, its a lot tougher to carry it out tho. If you think can you can handle it, help her out. If you don't think you can handle it (and this is perfectly okay, so you needn't feel obligated), then don't, and refuse. If you do decide to help out, make it clear to her where you stand. Make it clear to yourself where you stand (if you can't do this bit, then you can't handle the situation and you should refuse). Give her boundaries. Absolute ones. Tell her exactly what you're offering, how long she can stay and what you expect from her. And stick to these limits.
9.
Originally posted by Desbreko Here's an interesting question: Why do holes appear in the ozone layer at the north and south poles, during winter?
I assume you're not asking why there are holes in the first place, but actually you're asking why they appear only during winter? Reason is a little complicated, but it has to do with the fact that the north and south poles don't get any sunlight during winter, this creates conditions that are very cold, isolating the air and creating strong winds and making it even colder. Special clouds are then able to form that increase the rate of destruction of ozone. So the holes appear. I guess you just wanted a general reason? You didn't want any specifics right, cos if you do, I'm afraid my common knowledge doesn't extend that far,. ;) I'd have to search the web or something. I'm sure someone will do that and get back to you, but I can't cos one of my rules for answering 'quiz' questions is that if you need to look it up, it doesn't count. Yes, I'm strange like that. :D
10. Deus; Not according to my understanding of quantum physics. In fact, as I understand it, particles can exist in different states at the same time. But I'm not about to get into a debate about quantum physics here since I'll be the first to admit my knowledge is pretty limited in that area, but mainly because an understanding of quantum physics is not necessary to solve this apparent paradox. So the problem still stands. :D
11. Here's something to think about. If you take the distance between two different points in space, you can always break it down to smaller distances right? Let's say the distance to the shops from your house is 10 kilometers. Let's say point C is right in the middle. So from your house to C is 5 km. Of course there's a point D, 2.5km from your house between your house and C. You can keep on breaking the distance to smaller and smaller distances, but whatever the distance, it MUST take some time to travel that distance right? Whether its a second or a nanosecond. But if every distance can be broken down to smaller and smaller distances, AND every distance takes SOME time to travel, then how will you EVER reach the shops? Hopefully, someone OTHER than MathGuy can answer this, but if not, I guess its all up to you dude? ;)
12.
Originally posted by BabyGirl People need to lighten up and seek a sense of humor; not one that's dripping with rude, sarcastic remarks :p.
True. But if you were to read Foredaddy's post again, the one you were defending, you might find that it is just as rude and sarcastic as mine, if not more so. And there's the rub... And this stuff about ugly or beautiful people being freaks of nature, I don't really buy into all of that. There are some truly ugly people, and some truly beautiful people. But for almost every single one of us, we fall somewhere in between these two extremes. We are not 'born' with our looks, to a large extent we 'create' them; by the choices we make and by the lives we lead.
13. Some kids need to be pushed. Some don't. You don't want your kids to be burnt-out and resentful, but at the same time, there are very few things in life more sad than having a kid with all the talent and none of the ambition.
14.
Originally posted by BabyGirl Foredaddy is not an ***. He's actually a veteran to these boards, and an extremely funny one at that ;) Roxie- I don't think super models are freaks of nature at all. Just because they were born with super beautiful features doesn't mean that we should discriminate against them and call them weird names :p
Let me take a wild guess here, you're not the ugliest person to have ever walked upon the face of the earth, are you? ;) Word up for all the beautiful people of the world. Good job! :D As for supermodels and their ilk, personally I find it a little disturbing that people pay so much attention to their looks. But then again I find it equally disturbing that others pay so little attention to their appearance that it almost amounts to sabotage. And I agree mostly with what Anna said. Although I would probably tone down the talk about being selfish. Its been my experience that generally people are selfish enough as it is, its selflessness that is difficult to learn. Genuine selflessness that is, not the preachy, self-righteous type.
15. Do the people with problems have pop-up killers installed? Just a thought.
16.
Originally posted by Sara Begging thy pardon?
Its just a remark dudette. Take it as you will. Although personally, I've never found navel flint to be particularly interesting...:D
17.
Originally posted by Lady Asphyxia And you know, critism is welcome...
You really shouldn't have said that. :) And you should have waited. I had read it, and was going to reply, but alas my friends draggd me away from the computer (we're kinda in a huge partying mood at the moment, being the end of the university year and all). :D I enjoy reading the stuff you write. It shows promise. Of course, on occasion you do succumb to the common pitfalls that seems to plague all teenagers, but its all good cos everything is a learning experience. :D For this particular piece, I think you might have extended yourself just a bit too far. Which is not really a bad thing, its good you're experimenting and pushing the boundaries. However, 'Perfection', in my mind, was a better work. More honest and closer to heart, it was both endearing and sad at the same time. This piece reads well enough, but it comes off just a tad bit contrived. Try not to over use the device of 'And' to start sentences. It can become repetitive. 'Repressment', to my knowledge at least, is not a word. There were a couple of other grammatical errors, but nothing to be overly worried about. Second paragraph, the single word of 'Tradition' does not sit well there for me. I would have preferred something along the lines of 'The rigour of routine'. Yes, the story is about tradition but you don't really need to hammer it in our heads. Overall, its pretty good. There is an annoying feeling that something rings false, and this is probably because you've stretched yourself too far. For a 9th grader, I would give 'Perfection' an A. This I would rate a B+. Good job. As I said, a lot of promise. But do read more and write more, or else that promise will not be realised. And that would be a shame. ;)
18. 1. I didn't bring up NL, you did. 2. I did say I was not going to get into a discussion about NL, and I won't (if you or anyone else is interested PM me), despite your attempt at baiting me into some sort of argument that will no doubt end up with some reason for me getting banned. So please don't get all high and mighty with me. You're the admin, not me. This is your Board, not mine. You've been on here far, far longer than me, and certainly a heck of a lot more people, for one reason or another, respect you more than they respect me. So in any p*ssing contest, who do you thinks gonna win? And that's the way it should be. Because, unless I'm mistaken, you've probably put more blood, sweat and tears into this place than anyone else. So not only do I acknowledge your power, I respect it and your right to hold such authority. But let's not get off track here. I'm no butt-kisser. Nor am I some lame troll (for the uninitiated to Boards, a troll is someone who comes to a Board to post specious arguments or thinly veiled personal attacks for no other purpose than to annoy or disrupt a discussion). So from time to time I will voice my opinion. As I believe I am entitled to do under the rules. At this stage, after an ultimatum like the one you issued to me, most people will do one of two things. They will either capitulate, by basically retracting their statements and backing away at 100 miles an hour, or they will post some long-winded rationale for their behaviour and stand defiant with some throw-away line like 'So ban me if you wish, I don't care'. Well I'm not going to do either. Let me put this on the record. I do care. I don't want to be banned. If I didn't give a sh*t I wouldn't have spent the last month trying to decide if I should leave this place or not (still not sure, but its still a decision I want to make for myself and not be decided by someone else). But I will continue to say what I think. Just because I don't give this Board glowing testimonials is not something that should be held against me. Just because I lock horns with you and many of the old timers here is no reason to dismiss my arguments off-hand and label me some kind of troublemaker. And just because I say things no one else here is prepared to say does not mean I'm not afraid of being banned for saying them. So if my 'annoyance' is too much for you to take, then by all means ban me. No one here would hold it against you, least of all myself. And yes, I am saying that with a straight face. But please don't make it out to be all nice and fair and objective and for the good of the Board and all that nonsense. Now that that sermon is out of the way let's get back to the topic at hand. :D My whole point is not that we should get rid of post counts, but that we should keep them. There is a reason why almost every single Board I've ever been to has a post count. Members like to know where they stand in relation to others. People want and need to be differentiated (in some simple and official way). Post counts and titles are the easiest ways to do that. If you get rid of them, you'll need to install something else that serves the same function. My suggestion about resetting the post count to zero for everyone was to make a point. If everyone imagines that tomorrow their post counts will all be reduced to zero, what would their reaction be? If they are truly honest with themselves they will say their reaction will range from mild annoyance to total disaster. The point is everyone cares about post counts but very few will admit it. Just because people care about their post counts does not mean they are 'spammers'. They may well have earned their post counts and that's why it means so much more to them. It is also a mistake to believe that people who care about their post counts come to this Board for that reason alone. It may be the furthest thing from their minds when they post, but it is part of the history of this Board, and their place in it.
19. It would do plenty. If everyone really doesn't care about post counts, then let them put their money where their mouth is, so to speak. You don't even need a vBulletin hack. Just go into the admin panel, delete all groups save one, call it 'Members' (or 'Newbies' if you have a ironic sense of humour) or anything else you want. Have the the required posts for that level set to zero, and then everyone is the same (except for the mods/admins who of course will still have their titles). There is only ever one title so there is little point in moving up 'levels'. Wouldn't that be great? Everyone the same...so that someone who has made only ten posts can stand shoulder to shoulder with someone else who has made a thousand. :D Is it gonna happen? Not on your life. Why?? Because people's post counts do matter. Period. I dunno how much more simpler I can make it. Many of the 'more mature' members of this forum doesn't care about post counts? That's a load of bollocks and you know it. Of course they care. Some of them may care more than others but they all care. Take away a 100, they're not gonna give a damn. Take away 200, and all is still well. But starting taking away a thousand or two, and they will care. If there is no way to easily differentiate between veterans and newbies, then people will care. So please let's not start patronizing the 'younger' members of this forum about 'more mature' members having a higher level of ethics or values or whatever other nonsense. "It's impossible to please everyone". True. But the point is if you get rid of post counts completely, then you will please no one, except maybe me or one or two others. And you're not gonna want to displease the overwhelming majority of the Board just for the heck of it. If you're gonna do something as drastic as that you're gonna need a damn good reason. And guess what? None has yet been provided. So why am I suggesting this? Well because that is the topic of this thread, but moreover because I'm sick and tired of people taking the "high moral ground" and saying that post counts don't matter. Its silly, ridiculous and patently false. Let's stop the hypocrisy shall we? :D As for the removal of the Newbie Lounge, well in the half year or so I've been on here, I do believe that is the most disappointing thing I've seen from the leadership of this Board. Not for the action or the decision, but the manner in which it was done. The callous, indifferent and complete contempt shown to some members of this Board was sickening to behold. But let's not get into that. Not because its done and I should 'get over it'. But because it was a very disappointing thing, and I don't really want to be reminded of my disappointment. And people, let's not circle the wagons around James. I'm sure he's quite capable of taking care of himself. As no doubt his repsonse will demonstrate...:D
20. Well, I wouldn't hold your breath. Post counts will not be abolished anytime soon. It might be hidden or they might do something with it, but no one is gonna get rid of it altogether. Reason? Simple really. Despite what everyone says about not caring about post counts, blah blah blah, the bottom line is that everyone does. Of course some more than others, but I do mean everyone (save one or two exceptions, and if you are reading this, no, you are not likely to be one of those exceptions). I posted a suggestion about reducing everyone's post counts to zero in another thread. Except for MK, who for some reason I can't take seriously ;), no one accepted the challenge. Which to me says a helluva lot... This is a place essentially populated by teenagers. And of course no teenager I've ever known has ever cared about status/rank/titles...:D PS: You are right, your suggestion would require too much moderation. Besides, how are you going to measure 'quality'? To do it objectively, transparently and without bias, you'll need to measure the number of 'valid' posts and then determine how many such posts are required for each 'level'. Which brings you back to the same problem...:)
21.
Originally posted by Sara I am what I let you guys see.
Not quite true. For every word we write betrays us. Rick: "Half the time I either feel like a baby-sitter or people's personal punching bag not a good feeling at all." Oh I dunno. I think babies can be a lot of fun! :) As for being a punching bag, well, its a good thing I've got a thick skin. However, some people have been known to say its not my skin that's thick its my skull. But of course, that's just an outright baseless lie! :D But back to topic. Watering holes are a funny thing. You drink your fill, you are refreshed and revitalised, and you continue on your journey. Trouble is, for some people watering holes can be death traps. Dry and thirsty, they rush head long into the watering hole, only to find the sun has baked off most of the water, leaving behind a muddy mess. Inevitably they become mired in the mud, and like quicksand, the more they struggle, the deeper they sink. A few will not be able to free themselves. They remain bogged down, and die a slow lingering death from thirst or heat exhaustion. Their dead carcasses will no doubt attract the scavengers all too soon.
22.
Originally posted by Sara I've never dated....anyone. Methinks Jonah should get out and get a new perspective. :D Would I date someone from a different race? Sure! I have nothing against purple people. :D

how come

They (yes they are infamous) say that you are only as old as you feel. I guess by that yardstick you're....about a hundred?? ;) Well, its not so bad I'm about three... :D
25.
Originally posted by BabyGirl Not if both parties partaking in the sexual act are responsible :) I don't want to get in a debate, but just you wait! sex is MUCH more enjoyable than then loneliness of masturbation :toothy:
I don't think you'll get any debate on that one BabyGirl. ;) If masturbation was even remotely comparable to actual sex, the human race would have died out a long time ago. :D Although I must add, there is really no such thing as safe sex. Pills and condoms DO fail on occasion. I guess you can use BOTH and really protect yourself but this is really rare. And boys and girls, can I just say, pregnancy is not the only thing you have to worried about. 1 in 5 adult Americans have herpes. Along with hepatitis B and C it can be spread by the simple act of kissing. The levels of ignorance of STDs in young American children can be quite surprising. I once was told by a 20 year old university student that oral sex was perfectly safe. WTF?? Have I turned everyone off sex?? Good!! :D Nah, I just wanted to say life cannot be lived without risk. Acknowledge the risk, take adequate precautions (for sex that would be condoms, condoms, condoms, condoms! I really cannot emphasis that enough) and enjoy yourself! Life was never meant to be bottled up and buried in some dark and dank basement never to see the light of day. This community announcement was brought to you by the bored and the boring... :D
