Yaoi...Why watch it?

Ah. That's right...I forgot about that. Shonen-ai means "boy love" and is generally not sexual, whereas yaoi is hardcore...and sexual. Now I understand.

In that case, I don't see any point to watching yaoi other than for sexual pleasure. As for shonen-ai, it's just like any other romance anime, but with male/male couples instead. Shonen-ai would be the sort of thing that I like, not yaoi.

Yeah, I like shounen ai more myself. Implied yaoi in a generally shounen ai fic (i.e. in "strange and beautiful" or "Only A Human") I don't normally mind-but I hate hardcore yaoi when it serves no purpose aside from stimulating the readers. That, like other PWP, is just disgusting to me as both a reader and writer of fanfiction. :)

I think people read/watch/write yaoi are for the same reasons someone my read.watch.or write about yuri(is that the correct word?) which is girl on girl. Or even watch porn. Because they feel like it. I don't know why animated characters are such a turn on, for that matter, I don't know why men watch more porn than women. *shrugs*:drunk: Maybe it's hormones.
I have no problem with it tho, But hey, that's just one otaku onna's opinion in a world of many.

I have not seen too many Shonen/Shoujo-ai or Yaoi animes, but the few Shonen-ai ones I have seen I have enjoyed. This isn't about which one are your favorites, etc... I was wondering more about what the Japanese in general feel about it?

I know the target audience for Shonen-ai and Yaoi are females. Why do you think that is? Is homosexuality an accepted 'lifestyle' in Japan?

I still can't beleive, and will never forgive, Cartoon Network making Michiru and Hikaru cousins! I think it is the most proposterous thing I have ever heard concerning the editing of an anime/cartoon/TV Show/ film.

Personally, I would like to buy a major TV station and perhaps Turner so that I would own Cartoon Network, and I would air Gravitation, subtitles, uncut, during the peak hours and the hours when school kids would be watching. I think people need to learn to accept it and editing out for kids is not the answer. Acceptance needs to be taught at a young age, because appearantly not many parents are teaching it well out there.

This has gotten way of topic, but yeah. Is it accepted in Japan and do Shonen-Shoujo-ai anime shows perform well compared to the more 'main stream' ones?

I've never lived in Japan so I wouldn't know if it was accepted or not, but shounen-ai is fairly popular (more so yaoi to be truthful.) I haven't seen much shoiujo-ai as yaoi/shounen-ai. How they do depends on the audiance though. more girls would watch yaoi/shounen ai then boys and vice versa and some people don't like either.
I was really angry when CN made Haruka and Michiru cousins too. I hate to see what they'd do to Gravitaion...
About the TV staion thing, you do that, but you should show them dubbed un-cut at the time kids get out of school and subtitled later, kids, other then otaku kids (no offense) don't like reading subtitles. Though it would be a great idea, show some lighter shounen/shoujo-ai too.

Speaking of outrageous editings, is anyone else completely terrified of how Naruto will be translated? (I mean from a yaoi-content-related standpoint, naturally.) The
Sasuke/Naruto kiss
scene probably wouldn't air, and I'd bet _at least_ five dollars on Haku getting an impromptu gender change, or becoming Zabuza's distant relative's dog's groomer's owner's half-aunt-twice-removed's ex-adopeted son (or something to that effect. They can't possibly pull of the 'cousins' trick again.). If it becomes another Sailor Moon distaster, where everone suspects incest where once was poignant romance, some translators are going to be getting more than just some nasty letters from me. If the children of America can watch pop stars of the same gender kiss not only at awards ceremonies but also in every newspaper across the contry for weeks afterwards, you'd _think_ someone might have realized that we just _might_ be ready to handle shounen-ai and shoujo-ai!

Woah! Sasuke and Naruto kiss? I never saw that one coming. Then again, I've only read a little manga from a Shonen Jump magazine. What would I know?

To get on topic, I'm sure CN would ruin these animes with their S.W.A.T. team of editors so that they're "appropriate for children." It would be hazardous for them as I would prepare a boycott of CN if they do that.

You know, QA, this is like the immortal thread of otakuboards. It started way back in June or something. . .and it's been posted to ever since. I've posted to it as anti-shounen ai/yaoi and as pro shounen ai/yaoi. It's been spammed, argued over, threatened with closure-and yet it still remains. . . ^sigh^

I really see "no point" (pardon the play on words) to this whole debate. Either you like it or you don't. Live and let live. :)

I'm completely terrified of how the anime will be edited! I was a bit afraid to buy the Viz publication of Naruto - Volume 1 (the manga) because I didn't know how they would edit it, but everything is still in there, including
the accidental kiss scene between Naruto and Sasuke
, so hopefully they won't touch a thing when it comes to publishing the chapters with Zabuza and Haku!

As for the anime, I'm not hopeful at all. If ever the anime does get licensed in America, I agree that Haku will be castrated. They couldn't handle Sailor Moon or the shounen ai implications in Cardcaptor Sakura, so I highly doubt they'll allow Haku to remain as is..If that's the case, which it probably will be, I'm going to demand an uncut version be put on DVD so I can watch Naruto in all its uncensored glory, but I'm not sure if they'll even listen to my inevitable complaints ^_^

Well MillieFan, the discussion is still decent and new people are coming in everyday to talk about it. I think that it's better to just let this thread live on instead of creating a new one every few weeks. Everyone's being pretty respectful and spam is pretty much limited. So yes, it is immortal, but let it be. ^_^

Saying that Naruto and Sasuke fell in love with each other? They freakin HATE each other and Naruto is in love with SAKURA!
...That isn't true. They may outwardly hate each other but they're best friends.

...ok...the reason some of us like some yaois is because we feel sorry for one person in the Pairing.(like hiei) Then as we watch more and more...we realized that homosexuallity isn't really that bad. I mean when else can you see Hiei looking like a little kid~! :catgirl: :animesmil BUt to all the yaoi watchers out there, I feel your pain. Some people don't like Yaoi or Yuri and because of that they call it "stupid" or "gay". But that's the way the world is. If one person doesn't like it, It's "gay".... :animeangr Stupid americans....The people in Japan would have the sence and manners to hold their tounges. Oh well....G2G

So nice of you to group all Americans into the stupid catergory... stupid newbie... you can't even spell the sorrect sense that you meant... grr stupid newbies. Okay that was well... you know what I don't care. Ahem.

I'd watch Yaoi or Yuri (which with a different character means some type of flower) if the anime containing the relationship had an actual plot and wasn't based soley on sex... same thing with real life stuff, but I'm not going there too many younguns. I don't want to watch sex for the sole purpose of watching it because I'm legal]If I wanted to watch sex for the sole purpose of watching sex I'd.... .
ha censored blah blah blah blah
And despite what some people may think, Homosexuality in Asia is still a bit of a stigma, but Asia is not a majorly Judeo-Christian society like the United States Canada and most of Europe. So it's not as big a stigma as the rest of the world, but it's not as out in the open as you may want to believe.

I simply watch yaoi or shounen-ai for the art and the fascination that it holds over me. The art in yaoi is generally very beautiful. Of course, if it has a story line, I like it even more.
Oh and Yuri is the Japanese word for the lily flower.
(Barazoku means "rose tribe" and that refers to gay men. Whereas yurizoku means "lily tribe" and is used in reference to lesbians.)

Yaoi -- I've only watched one (Ai no Kusabi) and I liked it, if I could find more I would watch more ^^;

Shounen-ai -- Yes... I watch is as often as I can find it. Yami no Matsuei is one of my all-time favourite animes ^^ The art of shounen-ai is generally very beautiful and detailed. I also find that shounen-ai has some real heart behind the romance, which I find missing in a lot of guyxgirl animes (I still watch them though ^^: ). Shounen-ai also tends to have a mix of everything: romance, comedy, action... That's why I have a hard time disliking them :P

I guess everyone has their own opinions about watching yaoi and yuri. I don't care for yuri, but I like yaoi, simply because it's different than the regular romance. It's not boy meets girl, falls in love, has problems with relationship, sun sets on romantic ending thing. I think yaoi's cute! But I also think it's an aqquired taste, so I don't hold it against anyone if they don't like it.

I agree with jazie. Yoai isn't your typical romance story. It's diffrence in a lot of aspects, but, of corse, it kind of weird at first, as is everything new. Personally, I love yoai and I don't see how I lived without it. Just give yourself time, and if you really want to, you'll get into yoai.

Perhaps one should also ask why watch anime shows with only straight couples in it? Even if such relationships are not put into anime shows it will not change the fact they exist. I think such shows that address the reality that boys fall in love with boys and that girls fall in love with other girls are quite interesting. After all the boy falls in love with girl and vice versa is easy to find in just about any type of show.

Interesting that you would make the assumption that people who do not like Yaoi or Yuri are somehow a stupid American. I am quite sure that there are plenty of people who do not like it around the world and not just here in America. Besides I like yaoi and yuri and I am an American. Such a broad statement is pointless as it is not accurate.
