4. How did u come across anime? A variety of ways, a bit of all you listed. I originally got into anime when i was 4 years old or something and watched Dragon Ball, and Transformers. Other than that, my friends also like it, and my cousin is half Japenese, so ya...

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain Well, i'm a hecka lot more nerdy than i would be if i didn't watch anime. Other than that, it doesn't influence desicions i make or anything like that.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so? Psshh! I don't know and don't care. I like it, and that's all that matters to me.

7. What attracts you to anime? Well, most of the anime that i watch, i love the story to it. Often it's a story that is rarely use anywhere else, even movies, so it can be very unique in that way. I also love the art style of most anime.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples? Well, anime can be a pretty poor source of judging Japanese culture from. The representation of people, occupations, it is just as reliable as watching a movie about something, and saying that you've learned so much about it. With certain exceptions, it's just not true. Id o know a bit of Japanese culture from other sources though. I just don't rely on anime, or any entertainment for that matter, to base any opinions on. And i don't have 3 examples, or at least don't feel like thinking that hard.

Edit: ahhhhh... I'll make it look nicer.

1. Age:-□ 13-18
I'm turning 18 this summer.

2. Gender:-□ male
Sometimes I pretend I'm a butterfly though.

3. Where are u from? (nationality, country)
I was born in the Philippines, but I came to Canada. Now I live in the (self-proclaimed) most culturally diverse city in the world.

4. How did u come across anime?- friends- media
I first came across anime as a child. Although, I didn't know that Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball were from Japan. The first series I knew from Japan was Pokemon. The first serii that got me hooked were Dragonball Z and Gundam W.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain
Because of Anime, I have made friends. I have learned new things. I have been to places I have never dreamed of. Anime has changed my life.

And because of it I play Go. ^^

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?
I think it may be the most recent fad. I believe people like it because it's different, and that makes them "cool".

7. What attracts you to anime?
I like all forms of animation, whether it be anime or European Cartoons. I also like comic books, and movies. All of these I consider different genres with the same purpose.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?
I grew an interest in Japanese society and culture from Anime. Now my interest in Japan and it's culture are stronger than my interest in Anime.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?
My exam will be in about a month. This is my third year.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?
1. Japanese people value their society and their country over the indiuvidual.
2. Japan is a sexist society that is deeply rooted in tradition.
3. Although Japan is so strong when it comes to tradition, they are just as open to new things and are influenced by many other cultures, especially American.

□ 13-18 (16 to be exact)

2. Gender:-

□ male

3. Where are u from?

Born in US, live in US...i have too many nationalities to count

4. How did u come across anime?

I got real interested in Pokemon in about 5th grade and i was real into mainstream stuff...then i started watching Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network and after that i was hooked to everything anime.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person?

Anime is definitely reflected in my mannerisms and sense of humor. I also became very interested in Japanese culture because of it.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

I think, because its animated and people like the fact that something animated can affect them as much as any real life movie or television show. In japan its second nature but its so unique in western culture that many people immediately latch onto it and want more.

7. What attracts you to anime?

Well...I do loves me a good fight scene now and again, but I really love how characters are developed so well its like reading a really good book or watching a really captivating movie.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

Of course it is. I would directly attribute my love of japan and japanese culture to anime since anime introduced it all to me.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

I've taught myself Hiragana and am currently learning japanese in private lessons/computer programs

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

God i've learned a ton about Japanese culture...ok 3 examples you say?
Although there have been a multitude of technological advancements over the years, many ancient traditions are still upheld, such as tea ceremonies, strong family values, and uhh i'unno, lets say chopsticks XD

Good luck on your paper/project thingy! Hope this helps >.<

1. Age: 17

2. Gender: male

3. Where are you from? California

4. How did u come across anime? Toonami.

5. Do you think Anime influences you as a person? Every hobby influences the person that's into it. Anime is no different. As a matter of fact, I think that anime might affect you more as a person than most hobbies. With sports, you really just get into the sport and that's about it. With anime, there are story lines and characters to get to know, and I know that I've found myself picking up habbits from my favorite anime characters a couple of times. *snap*

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

Toonami and Adultswim have managed to give anime some publicity. Now that people know about it, they have the ability to like it.

7. What attracts you to anime?

Deeper and more complex character developement and story. I also like action in some of the violent anime, but its secondary to the better characters and stories.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

Not really. I do have an interest in learning about Japanese culture though. One of my long term goals in life is to examine as many cultures as I can.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

No, but I'm going to Japan in September, assuming that no big bills come in between now and then.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

Not so much from anime, but I know that the Japanese in general are generally more polite than most westerners. Drinking at a young age, while not encouraged, isn't as discouraged in Japan as it is here. Lastly, Japanese habbits are healthier than American habbits. Their meals are about half the size of American meals, and many of them choose to walk on short trips rather than drive.

1. Age

Just turned 20 last week

2. Gender

Male

3. Where are u from? (nationality, country)

Born and raised in Portland, OR. My mom is native Japanese and my dad is from Georgia

4. How did u come across anime?

Back when i was an infant my grandparents on my mom's side would periodically send me tapes of various animes that aired on japanese TV back in the mid-late 80s. been hooked ever since.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain

Yes, i believe that anime has an effect on how i view various situations, opinions and events. It also has a large impact on my personality, like what i find funny and/or offensive and so on.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

I have said this before and i'll say it again, the internet is probably the biggest cause for the rapid growth in popularity of anime in the western world. the fact that we're all here on this message board discussing anime is proof enough.

7. What attracts you to anime?

Sometimes the art styles, sometimes the plotlines and sometimes recommendations from friends.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

Definately, i love learning about japanese culture. and anime is a great source of information and not to mention very entertaining at the same time.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

Currently attending my second year of japanese in college. Have been to japan on four separate occasions: once for the funeral of my grandfather, once for the funeral of my grandmother. and twice as a vacation to visit my relatives.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

I'll state a few things about japanese culture that i noticed on my last trip to Tokyo last summer. 1.) The pornography industry in japan is HUGE! and its really not frowned upon like it is here in america. some of you may find this funny or maybe offensive but its true. almost every Department store, electronics store, hobby shop, book shop (and even sometimes grocery stores!!) that i visited in tokyo would have entire sections or even entire floors! dedicated to hentai and pornography, it blew me away!! and all of these shops had children frequenting their estanblishments (granted not in the porno sections) but the kids could freely go into those sections if they wanted to. 2.) Everything is much smaller and more compact in japan. everything from housing and buildings to streets and automobiles are much much smaller than in the states. The streets are much narrower and your typical car is much smaller in japan (i even saw someone driving down the road in a 1 person car, it looked like a cross between a mini-cooper and a go-kart). I stayed at my cousin's apartment in tokyo and though it was considered normal size in japan, it was laughable on american standards. my Apartment is easily twice the size it was. 3.) Things which are considered geeky/nerdy (for lack of a better word) in american culture, like video games, anime/manga, etc. are the backbone of the Japanese economy.

Well, i hope that all helps your report. Good Luck!

1. Age: 12

2. Gender: Male

3. Where are u from?: Boston Area, Massachusetts, United States of America

4. How did u come across anime?: Being forced to see Spirited Away

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person?: Except for taking up a lot of money, no, anime hasn't done much to influence me.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?: Because timeslot filler anime in the '60s and '70s (ala Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Voltron, G-Force, etc.) was actually better than most of the prime Saturday morning shows, creating a generation of fans who grew up to create the Toonami and Adult Swim blocks and release anime movies in art house theaters and on video and DVD. They showed the rest of the market that anime was profitable and slowly everyone tried to contribute to the craze in some way or another. Plus James Dobson thinks it's evil, and everyone hates James Dobson.

7. What attracts you to anime?: The same reason I'm attracted to any other form of expression: It allows people to tell meaningful and deep stories in beautiful, unusual, stylized manners. Also, it's interesting to learn about a different culture and because Japanese animators seem to be more comfortable taking risks, probably because anime has never been in a "dark age" while American animation seemed to be virtually dead from the cancelation of The Flintstones up until The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy livened things up and still the dark age stigma is attatched to most animators.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?: I wasn't that interested in Japanese society before I became an anime fan, although I loved karaoke and sushi. However, throughout my anime experience, I've noticed cultural details that intruiged me. I discussed them a lot at first with my family, and now I know quite a bit about Japanese culture and have several books on the topic.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?: No, but I want to.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?: 1. Slurp. 2. Burp. 3. They basically praise anything in American pop culture as long as it's kawaii.

1. Age:- 19-24

2. Gender:- Male

3. Where are u from?
Maryland, USA

4. How did u come across anime?
Media

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain
I believe anime does influence me as a person. A lot of animes have characters in relation to our real lives, and theres often morals in animes. This leads a person to really relate to the show and/or form themselves to become a better person.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?
I'm not quite sure. I think when one person watches an anime they really like, they share it with their friends which leads to more and more people watching a certain show.

7. What attracts you to anime?
Actually, at first I was just interested in the fighting. Which I still love, but now I've learned to really read into the story and form a bond with the characters of each anime.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?
I do have an interest for the Japanese culture, but its not solely based on anime. I love anime and I'd like to meet some of the famous authors and artists of todays anime. However, I've always been kind of interested in the Japanese culture, I just never really pursued the interest.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?
I've never been to Japan or taken a class. I have read books, however, about the Japanese culture and some others about the language. I know some Japanese but I doubt it would be enough ot acutally get me some where in the country.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?
Its hard to think of three specific things I've learned about the Japanese culture. Its hard to generalize so I'll just leave this one blank.

Ahhh! WOW! Another Aussie! I'm from Brissie ^_^

1. 13 - 18 category

2. Gender:-

Female

3. Where are u from? (nationality, country)

Purely Australian ^_^

4. How did u come across anime?

Anime sampler DVD from Madman. That's when I saw my first episode of what I classify is real anime. I'd watched DBZ, Beyblades, Zoids, etc before.

I watched Transformers and Robotech when I was younger. And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some people classify that as anime. Don't ask me!

5. Do you think Anime influences you as a person?

In some aspects, yeah. It makes me enjoy some things more like drawing, painting and writing. It gives me more inspiration for writing especially. How characters react to certain situations, settings, etc.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

Because it is different than normal cartoons and reaches a wider target audience in general. Some animes as specifically aimed at adults, the ones with adult or complex themes. Other are just plain and simple. and aimed at children.

7. What attracts you to anime?

Other than some great storylines and amazing characters (that's the most important thing), it was really the artwork that took me in. The detail of the characters were amazing and how the animation was produced. There were all different styles of representing one character, how different artists draw the character differently. How one stance can portray what a character is like.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

I've had a couple of Japanese exchange students homestay at my home. I've learned a lot about the culture from them, and it was really them who introduced me to anime. The first girl gave me a manga from Japan. This was after the sampler DVD I received from Madman in a magazine.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

I've done a little study on Japanese. I'm aiming to become involved in the anime industry in Australia and trying to further its development here. We have such a wide and diverse market to pose to.

My dream is to have an anime company of my own, based here in Australia.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

Wow.

Well one major theory I have myself about anime/manga is that it is an outlet for Japan's once conformed society. My Japanese students told me what it was like for their parents, and their grandparents, and how lucky they were to have so much freedom. That explains a few things about why anime characters have such weird colours for hair and so on.

Hee! I hope that helps you! I finished grade 12 last year. Hope you do well on your TTE!

1) Age 18

2)Male

3) United States MI

4) I came across anime by watching Sailor Moon a few times with my little sisters. It was pretty good, so when I looked it up on the Web, I ran across the world of anime.

5) Yes, I think it does. It alters our intrests, such as people wanting to learn/visit/move to Japan. That is just one example.

6)It is increasingly popular because it lets people enter complex worlds of anime, unlike the Amerime, where it is regulated and kept clean and simple, not to metion redundant, so all people can see them. Anime on the other hand has classes for this kind of thing. For instance, if you want simple and for little kids, you got things like Pokemon. For young teens, you got DragonballZ, and Ruroni Kenshin(the TV version). For older teens and adults, you got Akira. And with each class, the stories get more complex and deeper meanings. :animesigh

7)What attracts me to anime is the story. I like to watch anime like Fullmetal Alchemist and Gundam Seed because The story runs deep and there is ofter more going on than you know. For instance ,anime like DBZ is quite boring because all it is is people beatin the living @#$! out of each other time after time, and the appeal just fades.

8)Yes. I learned quite alot from watching anime like Ruroni Kenshin, and anime that takes place in the present. In RK, you learn about what life was like back in the Meiji era, and the shows about the present, if you look closely you see some details. EX: school uniforms, taking off shoes outside the door, chores, Ect.

9)Not yet. I am planning a trip in the future to visit Japan, but Ive got too much going on right now. I just turned 18.

10)Yes. They are stated in #8.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Yes, because it teaches us alot about life, like love and sometimes the reality of the world.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so? Because i think most of us are open minded and we like anything that is foriegn

7. What attracts you to anime?
Everything

Please explain your answer
Because i have grown up around anime, i have learned many new and interseting things about all the diferent anime out there. There are all sorts of stories about different things, unlike real movies and t.v shows most of them are all the same. that gets alittie boring

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society? Yes, sure is. i want to learn abouit Japan as much as i can, and anime helps alot.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? no

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples? Yes i have learned about Japanese culture. Like they go to school on saturday and that they love to read. How come nobody fixed the spelling errors? :p

1. Age: □ 13-18 (Almost 15 *feels so young*)

2. Gender: □ female

3. Where are you from? I'm American, thank you. :D

4. How did you come across anime? Definately media. xD

5. Do you think Anime influences you as a person? Other than my being poser-esque in trying to be Japanese? Nah. (Kidding. xP)

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so? Because it's different. Here in America, we're (mostly) lazy bastards who could never think up some of the stuff that gets shipped over here from Japan. After all, if Japan's influence had never reached us, all those Yaoi fangirls would have nothing to do. ^_~

7. What attracts you to anime? A little of each. When I first started watching anime, it was the violence (I was a very naught 6 year old.. >>;; ). Then, eventually, I got more into the story and the characters. The humor was always a plus, and now I'm quite interested in the medium.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society? Definately. It was anime that first sparked my interest to learn the Japanese language, culture, and people. Now I'm being tutored in Japanese (mainly the language, but my tutor enjoys telling me things about her home ^_^ ) and I'm actually doing well, to my parents' surprise, lol.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? Never been there, though I wouldn't mind going. I used to be in a Japanese class, but then I moved after first semester (this past February, as a matter of fact), and my new school doesn't offer it as a language. Soo.. I'm being tutored. =D

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples? Basically.. It's a much more polite in the way people interact and talk with each other. Almost everyone is formal with another, unless they are very close. Yet when you look at some of the manga and anime, they show lots of violence and/or sex. It's strange. You take a regular person, and they'd be very polite and reserved, but you take a manga, and it's the opposite; in your face and crude. Not that the readers mind, mind you. And lastly, while America is influenced by Japan in some things, Japan is influenced by other countries as well. Where do you think Kanji came from, eh? (I think I'm right about that point.. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Wow.. Lots of talking from me. ^_^;;

A survey! Hurrah! I love surveys!....sorry....I'm just odd that way. Right. On to the important stuff that you wanted....

1. Age:-
13-18

Yep. That would make me one of the masses. 16 to be precise.

2. Gender:-
female

3. Where are you from? (nationality, country)
Hrm...I guess I'll go with Washington (the state, not the dear capital of the US)...but I don't consider myself....ack. I'm having a hard time explaining it...So I'll just stick with that.

4. How did you come across anime?
- friends
- media
- interest in Japanese culture

5. Do you think Anime influences you as a person? Explain
Oh yes, I do definately believe that. There's a lot one can learn from it, even if it is just a 'backwards comic' in the immortal words of the stupid people at my school. Recently I've taken a bit more interest in soccer because of the series Whistle!
And it influences how people see you. I'm considered an 'anime freak' at school just because I read it...not that I see that as bad, necessarily...but you see my point.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?
Simple. Everyone tells their friends, then gets them hooked on the stuff! That's what's happened to me, and I do it to my friends! So that's what happens. I think...

7. What attracts you to anime?
- it?s different
- humour
- appealing medium
- violence
-Other: A good storyline
And much much more...I just love it all around...

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?
Well originally no...but I'm learning from it...not much mind you, but it provides an interesting insight into the mind of the culture, depending on the popularity of the series...

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?
Not as yet...but I'm getting there.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?
Yes, I'm sure I have. But I can't provide specific examples because that would make my brain hurt, and my WASL (standardized testing junk) already did that once for me today. :D

Australia

4. How did u come across anime?

- Other_________________

I watched shows like Astro Boy as a kid not knowing they were Japanese - I first watched something that I knew was 'anime' around 1995 and it was introduced to me by a friend

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain

not particularly. I don't act certain ways because of what's in the anime. However liking anime is a big part of who I am.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

I think it's become more accessible to people. There are also more mainstream tv channels and movies that are incorporating anime or anime like action.
EG The Matrix was a big factor in many people that I know turning to anime. That was a couple of guys who made movies and liked anime taking it to a wider audience.
The more people that like anime the more they show it to and the more that ultimately like it. I think the audience will continue to increase.

7. What attracts you to anime?

-Other_____________________
Please explain your answer

As it is animated it's not constricted in the same way live action films are. It is possible to do things that humans physically can't.
Most directors/writer etc use this to enable them to enhance the stories they're telling.

I find most western animation to be humour based and often obvious or crude humour which I don't find interested (there are exceptions and there is some western animation I like)

Anime has many styles and the stories are all varied and no I don't like all anime.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

I have an interest in Japan and Japanese society - it is not related to my interest in anime in any way other than anime is a facet of Japanese society. It is not the reason I'm interested in Japan.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

I take Japanese lessons and am visitng Japan in June

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

I assume you mean have I learned anything from anime about Japanese culture?
If so the answer is no

I have learnt much about Japanese culture from friends, language teachers and other sources, but I have not taken anything i've seen in anime to be related to their culture. It is an expression of their art more than a reflection of their society.

good luck :)

1. Age - 13-18 (15 exactly)

2. Gender - Female

3. Where are you from? I am a Native American, from America obviously.

4. How did you come across anime? - Cartoon Network aired Tenchi Muyo.

5. Do you think Anime influences you as a person? Explain. I think it has, because of it, I seem to be a bit more open about myself. Why? Well, when I was younger, I was rather timid. I didn't like to be made fun of, and even my closer friends didn't know a lot about me. And when one of my (former) friends made fun of me because I told her that I liked anime, I felt that I should stick up for myself more often, and be more open. So, I told her off and said "Who cares?"

6. Research shows that anime is becoming increasingly popular with the Western World. Why do you think this is so? Well, I have always thought that there was an anime or manga out there for everyone. A lot of people could relate to an anime, maybe not directly, but...you get my jist. It just seems that more companies have been able to get the word out about anime and it seems to be catching on with a lot more people.

A lot of people are figuring out that there's more to anime than the fact that it's animated. A "cartoon" if you will, there's a great plotline and good character development. Cartoons have no plotline, you don't see Tom and Jerry go through a multi-episode dilemma or anything like that. Do you?

Movies such as The Grudge, Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix...etc. (you see my point) where stars such as Keanu Reeves and countless others are into this whole thing are able to influence the masses. ((Thinks of creepy fangirls who have those pictures of him on their walls, reading interviews about what he likes and saying. "Well, if that's what he likes, then that's what I like." And I know they're out there. :p))

7. What attracts you to anime? It?s different, it's more than a cartoon. (See above)

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society? Actually yes, my friend and I can't wait to go there ourselves and see what it's like.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? No, but my friend and I plan on going after we graduate.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give three specific examples. Little things like school on Saturdays like WhiteAoiFox mentioned or things as simple as taking off your shoes outside like DarkTigerPack17 mentioned. Or something like the fact that they have the shower/bath in a different room than the toilet, and that the toilets are not...Americanized toilets.

Well then, that should be enough. "^__^" Hope that it helps...I talked a lot...
It is increasingly popular because it lets people enter complex worlds of anime, unlike the Amerime, where it is regulated and kept clean and simple, not to metion redundant, so all people can see them.
Amerime... Hey, I like that term! Let's try to make it official!

However, what you said there has some innacuracy to it. First of all, you act as if the Japanese have no regulations. They do. Looser than American regulations, but they still have pretty firm regulations. For anime, it's a win-loose situation in terms of the censorship. On one hand, there's hardly any differentiation between a "kid show" and a "family show" in Japan, and thus shows such as One Piece, Sailor Moon, etc. which would have to be butchered to pieces by American Saturday morning standards end up with reasonable ammounts of violence and content in Japanese early primetime. On the other hand, it's harder to sell anime geared for exclusively teens and young adults to Japanese networks, and so we either end up with shows getting cut to pieces in family timeslots ala Cowboy Bebop or keep those shows exclusive to satellite TV and home video. Also, not all Amerime is regulated that much. Have you even seen South Park or Family Guy, or even something slightly tamer like Justice League Unlimited or Invader ZIM? If not, watch one of those shows and if you tell me it's "clean and simple, not to mention redundant", then you either have bad taste or are whacked in the head.

For me its made me appreciate the hard work others go through even just to do a small task (how many times have anime been a success despite severe Budget problems? :animesmil )

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

Mostly Because when it was released in the west it was a breath of fresh air. Once people started to see what the fuss was about they quickly became addicted to this new entertainment

7. What attracts you to anime?
- it?s different and has story lines that make the viewer think and take it seriously... And both violence and comedy attract me :animesmil

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

When I first started it was to learn more about the culture for a term paper. Now i just use it for entertainment,

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan?

No but I do plan to when i have the money.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples

Ive learned that they value hard work and respect for their elders above most things. This can put pressure on students to do better but can also be a bad sign (e.g. they could cave in and run away). I also learned that many believe that you shouldnt waste things and try to make do with what you have (this can usually be in the form of their living space).

3. Where are u from? (nationality, country) USA, babeh.

4. How did u come across anime? My brother was addicted to DBZ when he was younger, and I watched it with him.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain

It's just one of many hobbies for me. It does enrich my life, in the sense that I see different styles of art and different ways of thinking than I would have had I just stuck to being a Western art/cartoon fiend.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so?

It caters to a niche market -one that wants to watch animation with more adult themes and topics. Like my father pointed out, it's our generation's Star Trek.

7. What attracts you to anime?

When I was a teenager, I would have replied because it was different. Now I say because of the level of characterization that is sadly lacking in a lot of American programming. (Not that 'harem girl' anime's any better...I jsut like shows with brains.)

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society?

Yes, actually. Anime was my impetus to learn about Japanese society, and later, Buddhism. :animesmil

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? I've been taking Japanese for four years at the college level, and I do fan translations.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?

1.) The language has to count for something, right? It's interesting to see how some other culture represents their way of thinking. (Kanji, the two kana systems, idioms, the DAMN PARTICLES...)

2.) There are, of course, very few Japanese Christians. Most Japanese practice an informal blend of Shintô and Buddhism.

3.) During the feudal era, male-male romantic relations were rather common, especially among the warrior class. However, after contact with the West during the Meiji era, the attitude towards homosexuality became similar to that of the Victorian Western world- that it was a shameful disease. Yaoi mang are NOT that accurate, fangirls. :p

4. How did u come across anime?Apparently watched Akira with mother as an infant, but earliest memory of seeing anime is watching Ninja Scroll with my mom and dad.

5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain Yes it has, the belief that humanity can survive and thrive during great trials is a recurring theme in anime that has planted itself in my very core. I believe anything is possible no matter the odds.

6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so? Of course it's increasingly popular in the western world, more anime is pooring out from the Eastern world and the old walls of misunderstanding are slowly coming down.

7. What attracts you to anime?Other, It's just another form of media I watch. I watch movies, cartoons, sitcoms, the news, anime, and a lot of other things. I get excited over new movies, new shows, new episodes of favorite shows and so forth; which also translates into anime.

8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society? I have always been interested in Asia in general, so in turn I am interested in Japanese culture and society, but my interest in japan does not affect my interest in anime.

9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? No, but I intend on doing so in the future. Japan is one of many great places I'd like to visit.

10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples?Sure, but these may be complete misconceptions.
