1. They're animated, lots of people have trouble getting past the idea that cartoons can be aimed at people other than little kids.

2. Some of them are too complex for idiots to understand. That's a large part of the reason why Star Trek was hated on so much, you know...
i totaly agree because almost everyone in my school that says bad stuff about anime are complet idiots.
most of the populer kids in my school think thrir to cool to watch and it makes me mad :animeangr
Anime is considered nerdy or dorkish because there are people like me who go out and cosplay, and there are folks who spend loads of money on the little figurines, and do all sorts of other "nerdy" or "geeky" stuff.
Exactly.
For one, a lot of people that are interested in anime are those who also spend a lot of time indoors, on the internet, role playing... and so on. So, naturally, by looking at just those so many people, others get the idea that all people who like anime act that way. Unless you like anime and you don't act that way yourself. But it's hard to convince other people that anime is not geeky. And we should just leave it. People who stand up and say, "Anime is NOT just for geeks!" People will just tend to think you are a geek unless you are uber popular or something... then you just make it worse. It is beyond me how some people are so dense like that, though. But it'll always happen, so we might as well get over it.

Also, some anime IS childish because of this simple fact: it was designed for children. Anime such as Hamtaro, Digimon, Pokemon... that sort of stuff, was created with the younger audience in mind. So, that's why it seems childish. Obviously.

And I will completely admit that I am a geek, and damn proud, might I add. I love anime conventions, love cosplay, love to RPG. And if anyone has a problem with that, then they can bite my meatballs. Simple as that. People that are really into something don't have to defend what they like, because they know that they like it and they don't care what others think about it. That's how I view it, anyway.
I agree, 4kids has put out several anime that they edited and turned it into a kiddy show. Like Sailor Moon, they cut out 15 episodes in the first two seasons and ruined it in my opinion. But since they did it when you mention you like anime or someone finds out you do then they think "oh! They like that dorky show Sailor Moon! Or Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh!" When in fact they aren't dorky at all.

Though if I have to be stuck with being considered nerdy or dorkish for liking anime I'll accept that title without any complaint. Why? Cause for some reason a lot of people where I live think anime is pornography and I hate being called a pervert for watching DNAngel or Full Metal Panic. It all comes down to ignorance I guess.
And, now they have finally messed up Naruto! CN has made the rule..."No blood, girls in bathing suits only for Ninja centerfolds..." Another reason to look at us as dorks! If one of you guys asked me this thread question, I'd say "When did they start thinking that?" L.O.L. I actually like anime better than sports...No offense, I love to skateboard and play soccer. Those people that come to that conclusion before seeing it aren't the smartest ones , huh? :animesmil

The reason why people (obviously more popular people than us) call it "dorkish" (XD I don't use that word in England) is because we like to escape from reality, they like to confront it head on and make sure they get out in the open to get them recognised or anything. We, on the other hand, are timid creatures that (as been said before) get sucked into anime (that's why I'm here XD) and have a blurry social life.
Assuming that you are quiet people tend to call you a geek (I've only ever been called a freak but that's because I don't come out of my house) and the more popular people don't even like you, they are going to say anything you like is geeky, aka: dorky.
My conclusion is: They call it geeky because they think that cartoons are for kids (the majority are though, they just can't tell the difference when it's anime) and are for simple beings, actually, they give me more intelligence. Shopping or something won't give me any knowledge at all >_< So, my final thing to add is that they probably haven't even gave it a chance yet!
BUT
And there's a but...
At least every single person in their life has owned a Pokémon card.

I agree with Lore. Nowadays everyone has "I love dorks" t-shirts and being called a prep is now a big insult. So really, I'm happy to be a dork. I don't really mind, there are plenty of them.

But to the point of the thread, I think anime is only considered dorky because of the more vocal anime fans. They tend to obsess over it loudly and publicly and while I'm not saying it's a bad thing, after awhile people will associate obsessive to anime.

Really it's only some fans who are dorky, the rest are just...normal fans lol After seeing obsessed fans, the general public begins to think anime is just all around dorky. That's what I think anyway.

In truth, anime is considered nerdy and dorkish due to the fact that it's highly different than other shows we watch. Anime tends to possess things in it that can be considered... weird. Like the overly-dramatic moments it has or the sweatdrops or when they make the characters go all kawaii for a moment (that's just... ruins the atmosphere for me). If I ever call someone a dork for liking anime, I'm kidding, but in retrospect, these are the reasons I don't like anime.

Odd I go to an anime forum, eh?

Yeah I guess you're right, Lore. When someone calls you a dork it means they dislike you and you are only that in their eyes sometimes. But if you are called a jock or a prep you usually are no matter what.

As far as I've seen, Anime is considered "nerdy" or "dorkish" because peole who watch it tend to be quiet or reserved (as has been said before). the peole who openly condemn it however, often do so to make themselves more reassured about their own intersests.

I don't agree completely with the statement that just because you are open with how you feel that you're wack! That's not what was actually said but thats what I got. I am open with my love for all things anime and I am still not insane about it. Sure i wear my t-shirts and stuff but I don't go around associating anime to real life situations. Anime is a big part of my life, its what makes me tick you could say, but when you get into full fledged stupid with it you're not obsessed you're crazy! Those who want to be open need to learn an important rule: Keep reality out of it. Now that I've said my peice I'm going to watch Inuyasha.

It's probably considered dorky or nerdish because people just think it's for little kids only or something. Which is totally untrue! Yeah, there are some that are looked on as childish (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon)But there are also ones that aren't childish. People pretty much ruin it when they cut episodes, lines, and stuff. Making it look childish, which gives the look of: Nerdy, childish, and/or stupid.
Some people think anime/manga is nerdy and dorky, so who cares what they think?
You are you, and you should be proud of that, no matter how you express your liking for it.(Although as people say,if you link it with reality, that's a bit far, but okay if that's how you express it)But all the other stuff....go for it if it's fun for you!^^Who cares about the point of views of others!?!
It's their loss right?
That's my opinion.

That does not mean that every person who is called a prep is an snob who only cares about buying ridiculously expensive clothes, or that every person who is called a jock is a blockhead who's only joy in life is clobbering people on the football field and dating cheerleaders.

Anyway, whether something you like is considered nerdy, preppy, or whatever else, just be yourself. You'll be much happier with yourself later on.

I, personally, am a nerd and I am proud. The only people who see anime as childish have never seen real anime. What I mean are the deep, compelling, bloody, and sexual anime which are numerous. I have noticed that most people don't care anymore whether you do or don't. For example I openly read manga in class at school and talk about anime with friends in class and no one gives a flying fart. It does me well to see people growing up and not tormenting a person for watching anime. this is truly the golden age ot anime, soak it up cause it may end at ant time.

Most people don't know anything about it. So they figure that someone who likes anime basically likes cartoons. And many people find it childish.

Sadly, whenever people think of anime they automatically think of Pokemon.

what can I say? people think that anime is childish/nerdish 'cause they are have never watched it before. I guess it also gives them a sense of power! The biggest reason I'd say is that it is the whole "dead fish, go with the flow" thing. If someone says that it is uncool then everyone else just says so too ... pfft! :animeangr

Anime Is not considered dorkish to those who watch it? Those who understand the concept of it... See you will find out later in life that either somone is 1. Ignorant 2. Unintelligent 3. Or Cool.... The fact of the matter is people categorize everything. See that is the downfall of the Human race... Once one turns into a Ignorant d*ck they are no longer in my eyes worthy of ME. Nor am I joking.

So a basic answer is don't care what others think and be yourself... If you act how people want you to act you are just as foolish as them. Most follow a code or group, this group says what is and is not cool, but their is no real leader the group all thinks alike. So that should answer your question. And if you don't get what I just said... May your soul R.I.P.

So as a final word of advice why care? Why care if they think it is geeky or nerdish?

Its a stereotype... "All Blacks Are Skinny and Gangsters"

"All Rich Kids Are Snobby"

"All Fat Kids Like Pie"

"All Geeks like computers"

I mean its just basic common sense this race is ****** up man... Thats all I can say

Excuse my language

Im Glad I have found a false sense of security here at OB since most here are quite like myself.

One last word of advice: Pick your friends with extreme caution.

Try as non-otakus may, they will never understand a thing when fans talk about anime. Fans tend to get so specific and in-depth when it comes to their favorite series that they may seem like they're taking a course about it or something.

It's kinda like how accountants will react when geologists talk about transform faults: they may not blatantly declare the latter as "geeks" but will surely comment on how, erhm, different they are.

Add EVA Unit 100's comment on stereotyping and you've got a psychology theory in the making.

I do be myself lady lore, and I'm very happy with it. But that doesn't stop the flow of 'hey dorks' and crap like that. I'm freinds with jocks, anyway... It is just what they are, and they don't take it as an insult. They know they are. It's the preps and popular people I can't stand to be around. They are stupid is what they are, no exceptions.

I think people haven't given it a chance. Anime and American cartoons are on two diffrent levels in my book . The story lines and everything are diffrent. Personaly I think anime stories incorporate alot of meaning, and morals that american cartoons don't.

Right you are, for watching spongebob, the only moral you'll get is the stupidity of sponges and fish. LOL. But yeah most anime have hidden morals, but back on topic... Ive known some jocks to like anime. Football players, and me, a soccer/sk8r boi/swimming/basebaLL/Karate/Basketball... Well you kinda get the point. I'm a jock sorta and dork. I prefer anime over sports, but I do play those sports alot. Some sports are just a little stupid to me thats all... I gave sports a chance so why not them giving anime a chance?

American cartoons can be very meaningful as well. Ignore the obvious, just-for-laughs examples like Spongebob and Family Guy (and remember, anime has its decent share of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobos and Excel Sagas), and you can find a lot of greats as deep and meaningful as any good anime of the sort. Watch a few really good episodes of Justice League Unlimited (particularly "For the Man Who Has Everything"), or one of Brad Bird's movies (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) and you'll see what I mean.
