First off, only the "asshole" types are thinking is childish(You know the gangster-wanabees? those guys picking on weaker kids?)...
Secondly, it's because Anime is Cartoon(Damn...Didn't come out right...umm...Cartoons? no...Well, you got the point.).
And finally, only anme like Pokemona and DBZ(And Sailor Moon, andDigimon, and...Well, the list goes on...) is childish, let alone nerdish...

It's shows like DBZ and All the shows i listed above that are ruining Anime's name.
Go watch something god, like Elfen Lied, Jing king of Bandit or Kino's Journey...

Us anime fans tend to be quieter and more personal with our hobby. However, those who are verbal are the worst of us. That is to say, you have these people who try and represent anime and by doing so, give us all a bad name.

Think about it: how often do you express anime-related things? Not very much. On the other hand, there are people who associate everything with anime: love, fighting, theory, you name it. I'm sick of some people comparing every new movie that comes out to Mononoke Hime.

So, to answer your question, it's just that the majority of us are reserved, polite, and very indifferent, so very few people ever become aware of anime interest. They only find out about people's interest in anime by those people who love anime too much, and so just stereotype and think all anime fans are like that.

Hope that made sense, heh.

I agree that some anime sucks bad. And that some people take it a little to far but don't dis us all. I mean come on i live in texas and we don't get to watch much anime other than what comes on G4ttv, toonami and adult swim. Even With SATILITE. I don't like cosplay, but think about your favorite maga series or your favorite show. I do think though, people shouldn't tell every one they meet that they love anime to a point. I mean some of that stuff... is STUPID & HAS NO MEANING but you don't have to beleive me....

it is your choice to respond or not.........^___________^

Well, I AM a nerd, so I really don't give a damn when people laugh at me nowadays. I've cosplayed once, and you know what? It was fun. Yes, it was fun walking around as one of my favorite anime characters. Not in some random, public place, but at an anime convention, where a ton of other nerds are too. It was fun to go with my brother and point out people dressed up as characters I knew.

Aaaaaaaaanyways, back on topic. Anime is considered nerdy or dorkish because there are people like me who go out and cosplay, and there are folks who spend loads of money on the little figurines, and do all sorts of other "nerdy" or "geeky" stuff.

I can understand where people get that anime is for nerdy because, since people think of it as a cartoon, they think that people who like anime must be like little kids. However, they havent took the time to try and understand anime and if they took that time to try and understand it they would be able to see that it isnt nerdy at all its just a cartoon for people that want a cartoon, but it is one that is for older people and has different carying themes in it.

I think it's because of what they know of anime, you know pokemon and that stuff. Plus most of the people that would call you or anyone else a nerd or freak are wannabes. I'm not big on talking to people about anime, I only talk about to people who like it. I think that people who tell everyone about it and talk about it all the time are messing it up. And I dont want to be mean but in my chase alot of people at my school that talk about anime all the time are kinda nerdy. As in they're live is anime and computers.

Anime in general is nerdy and whatever else you want to call it. There's no way around it. And you shouldn't care if people call you a dork or whatever, anyway. I agree with what Azure said, if you're always obsessing over anime then people are going to see you as a weirdo. Just keep your love for it to a public bare minimum and you won't worry about namecallers.

Just my two cents. Two cents is not worth anything.

1. They're animated, lots of people have trouble getting past the idea that cartoons can be aimed at people other than little kids.

2. Some of them are too complex for idiots to understand. That's a large part of the reason why Star Trek was hated on so much, you know...

People just don't get it. Many people think that anime is stupid and it's just cartoons. That's why people think it's stupid. I just think that if everyone were to watch a little the world would be better.Hahahahaha :animesmil Well Peace, love, and oil grease

For me it is true, me and my friends who watch it are in a way losers, it isn't always for losers, but whoever gets into anime gets sucked into because it is so cool and deep, they in turn lose all social life. Also alot of the good anime is very deep, and hard to understand if you aren't smart you need at least have good reasoning skills, and when people are smart they are considered nerds, even though that isn't exactly true, I get all A's but I haven't studied in 3 or 4 years.

Well...in my own view, I think most people find it nerdy because most fans of anime are always obsessing over it. Like me for example, I spend most of my time worshiping Japanese animation. And maybe, some people just find that weird so all they CAN say is that it's nerdy. I dunno, that's just my opinion. :animeswea

my guess would be because its mostly misunderstood. most unknowing people (at my school anyways) asociated anime with pokemon, digimon, and DBZ, because that was all they ever heard of, would be my guess. and yeah, they are crap. some of the really good shows have slightly unpronuncable titles (haibane renmei, azumanga daioh((the manga, not the anime))), or really strange, dorkish sounding titles (fruits basket, appleseed, read or die). to me, this adds to the bad steriotypes...and my train of thought just derailed, guess im done here

I'm Sorry Miss Lore...And I too Think Miss Mirelle Chan has good replies :animesmil I'm a bit of a dork sometimes, too. Everyday me and my friend think of ways to cosplay anime without anybody knowing, and we succeed! Sometimes I Wear some goggles like Naruto's around my forehead, and my friend wears his hair in a little pony-tail like Miroku...We are big dorks without any one knowing...But we could kick a bullies butt in about two seconds if they got us mad! So we are jocky but nerdy but goodlooking cause we get girlfriends alot but are still considered dorks by our girlfriend friends... :animenose :animestun Am I confusing you guys? I don't think that Anime is nerdy though, its way more complex than saturday night wrestling that most dudes watch!

It actually depends on the continent you're from. Some consider it dorkish while others consider it a daily value of life. This question is like the galaxy, answers are as numerous as the stars. Anything can be considered dorky; videogames, movies, collecting the Martha Stewart collection, sports, cars, etc, etc. This list never ends, so the answer to your question would be, does it really matter what people think? i think the reason a lot of ppl think it is kiddish is because of all the animes that 4kids and other companies like that have edited and produced in america like pokemon. and i somebody that doesn't know nething about anime automatically think "pokemon! wut a stupid show!" but luckiely, people in my school really have no problem with anime or manga. in fact a lot of my friends (and my sister) love manga and anime as much as i do. and if nebody does have a problem with anime or manga, they simply didn't take the time to learn more about it and assumed it was just like pokemom or other shows like that. at least that my opinion. but wut do i know? :animeswea

I got into anime waayyyyy back with Akira, Fist of the NORTH star, Macross, etc..
and always kept it to myself. Then one of my friends came over and saw the tapes on the shelf. I popped one in for him and he totally got into it. What I'm trying to say is that maybe if one of the "haters" actually watched the stuff their view would change. Even got my GF watching Tenchi Muyo cuz of good ol' Ryo-ohky (sp). Been awhile.

What is dorky/nerdy anyway? Why should anime be considered more dorky/nerdy than anything else? It's an opinion. It doesn't matter.

If I think sports is dorky or nerdy, or a complete waste of time, does that make it so? NO! Come on people, it's not about what other people think.

And I say why hide the fact that you like what you like? I am 25 years old, and I have come to the conclusion that I don't CARE if people think I'm dorky or nerdy. I spent all of my school life caring. At the age I'm at, expressing my interests and proclivities and seeing people's reactions is simply a good way to figure out who is and who is not worthy of my friendship.

I have a standard office job where people expect you to be "professional". I always say "What does professional mean, anyway?" I like to talk personally and frankly to people, so I just do. I tell them I like anime, and I proudly use an anime desktop and screensaver. If they think bad of me for it, who cares? I don't particularly like some of the things they like either, but does that make the person? Not really.

I just don't understand all this judgement stuff. Why do we have to put tags on everybody? Come on people, be proud of who you are! Realize that the people who think badly of you for what you like will not make good long term friends anyway, because you always have to watch what you say or their opinion of you will change.

That's BS to me.

And, for the record, I think people consider anime "nerdy/dorky" because it's not "normal" (meaning 50% or more of the population doesn't do it) to like it. People don't like to accept things out of the realm of what they're used to and comfortable with. Lots of people have closed minds, and fear the "unknown". They also think that people who cosplay are childish, which makes them nerdy because they should "grow up already". Well I say if it's fun, do it.

I plan to cosplay at Otakon 2005 next week, and I am having FUN making my costume. I'm PROUD that I put something together for myself, even if it's not something specific from an anime, just generic. And I WILL post photos of it where people can publicly see them.

I my Grandfather watches football he says stuff like "Yay we won". When I watched DBZ and Goku/Krillan/Gohan/ect. won a fight I didn't say "Yay we won". Yet I'm Strange and my Grampa's normal.

I agree, 4kids has put out several anime that they edited and turned it into a kiddy show. Like Sailor Moon, they cut out 15 episodes in the first two seasons and ruined it in my opinion. But since they did it when you mention you like anime or someone finds out you do then they think "oh! They like that dorky show Sailor Moon! Or Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh!" When in fact they aren't dorky at all.

Though if I have to be stuck with being considered nerdy or dorkish for liking anime I'll accept that title without any complaint. Why? Cause for some reason a lot of people where I live think anime is pornography and I hate being called a pervert for watching DNAngel or Full Metal Panic. It all comes down to ignorance I guess.

I usually preach about how one shouldn't worry about appearnces. But this topic is all about appearnaces, you know?
Being a fan of anime is just like being a fan of [insert something here] or whatever. If anything, anime fans aren't as public about their hobby as some are (at my school, things such as the OC and Degrassi come to mind =_=;; ). But when you say you like anime, people have a bad reaction to it because they have no frickin' clue what you're talking about.
It's the unknown that most people fear or dislike. And so, the same goes for anime. Although the culture is growing, it's still not in the mainstream. Whenever a report comes along saying anime is growing, it's more along the lines of the corperate world, or that somebody famous is doing something related. Popularity wise, it's still a hobby for people viewed as weirdos, nerds, outcasts, perverts, and ones that don't grow up. Yes, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh left some pretty bad dents on anime. Why?
People know of those shows because of the sell-outs. They know their bad because of all the crap you see in Target. Seriously, I'm all for keychains and watches and stuff, but when you're selling cheap vinyl backpacks and Yugi wigs (that's just horrifying), you know something's wrong.
Unfortunately, the good (and kinda sophisticated) shows that are a hit with fans, like Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, Ghost in the Shell - those kinds - are the ones that are hardly known of.
Ah. *sigh* We're just like anybody else, except we like something foreign.
