The Dark Knight

Is there not a thread on this already? Good gosh, people; Heath Ledger's obituary hasn't even moved of the front page yet and I can't find a thread on his final movie!

Anyway.

I just saw the official trailer for Dark Knight, and I am ecstatic. Not only is Christian Bale the best Batman/Bruce Wayne to date in my opinion (and that's not at all biased by the fact that he's one of my all-time favorite actors), Ledger's interpretation of The Joker is great. Magnificent. Jack Nicholson should be proud; especially since the speech quirks that Ledger put into the character seem to be a direct homage to Nicholson.

I am fortunate that this is releasing over the summer; there's a drive-in about twenty minutes away from my house, and it costs $5.00 to stay through two movies. Plus our decrepit old Mercury Villager for some reason came with a great stock sound system; I can approximate a cinema in the darn thing.

If I see one movie on the silver screen this year, Dark Knight will be the one.

I just got back from the premiere in my town and may I be the first to say.

THIS MOVIE BLEW MY MIND!!!

In the first 5 minutes of this movie I was not only sure that Heath Ledger (Rest in peace.) was right for this role, I was made certain that he was the best joker there has ever been and ever will be.

This was Batman at his best, at his darkest. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time I was watching, and even when I thought I had a scene figured out it surprised me in one way or another. It has some of the best writing, acting, directing, and special effects I have ever seen.

See this movie. It is a must see movie that will not disappoint.

P.S. It has made #4 on top 250 movies on imdb in its first night.

It's going to be good, but, nothing can beat Batman and Robin, which is hands down the best Batman movie ever made. I don't know about you, but I got goosebumps when I first saw Arnie as Mr. Freeze. He just got the character down to perfection. George Clooney, man, he will always be Batman, in my books.

Not. He-he-ha-ha-ha! Come on, Why so serious?

Dark Knight, wow. I've only seen the trailer and this film is blowing my mind.

First off, Heath Ledger's joker is legitimately scary. He's a far cry from Jack Nicholson's campy Joker and in a league of his own. Despite being an absolute psychopath, Ledger's Joker remains believeable. Perhaps that's the scariest part about his interpretation, that he's an anarchist clown who you could imagine existing, in a real world environment, and you're not suspending any disbelief to do so.

It's definately not a movie I'd take kids along to, and I can't remember ever thinking that about any of the so-called superhero flicks. I wonder how many folks out there will though? I mean, it's only Batman!

This part of the post does not come with a sarcastic not. I am serious. ;)

Oh gawd. Batman and Robin was seriously the worst Batman movie ever. I remember my heart dying when they made Comm. Gordon fall and grovel before Uma Thurman. And my god the rubber and spandex were like some kind of horrific porno gone wrong.

BUT ANYWAY.

Just got back from the utterly packed 12:30 a.m. showing in my area and quite honestly, the Joker takes it away. With his potato peeler, switchblade, butterfly knife, buck knife, and RPG.

I had the best time ever since the majority of the movie is comprised of "HOLY ****" moments strung together with slightly less than thrilling movie equivalent of the cutscene you skip every time you play the video games just so you can get back to viciously maiming things. Morgan Freeman's performance was divine as usual, and Aaron Eckhart made me sing and dance and then of course cover my eyes in fear. Of course someone halfway through lit up a joint and then of course the marijuana was circulated through the entire system so that might've changed things...
However the greatest moment of the entire movie was when the Joker makes his way into the criminal hideout and sticks a pencil into the table and then declares he shall make it disappear. Then of course when one of the overzealous body guards goes for him he grabs him and slams the thug face first into the pencil, picking it up while lodged in the man's face and voila. The pencil has indeed disappeared from the table. ....into the guy's skull. There was a mixture of shocked laughter and uproarious applause for the Joker from the audience.

Best movie ever. Simply put.

I had no gripes.

From beginning to end you're on the edge of your seat rooting for the down-and-out Batman who simply can't seem to win against the Joker no matter how hard he tries. Now, unlike Spider-Man 3, this movie did two antagonists to perfection whereas Spider-Man 3 felt forced.

Harvey Dent was a stand-up character in the movie. Aaron Eckhart really brought him to life as Heath Ledger did for the Joker.

Christian Bale did another fantastic job as Batman, and Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth was played to perfection like the rest of the cast.

The action scenes were so amazing on top of everything else. Batman was utilizing so many different martial art styles that you could swear it was Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li all rolled into one guy. The obligatory chase scene was pretty amazing too because the whole time you're gritting your teeth in anticipation of what is going to happen next.

I could go on and on and on but I'd rather you all go see it instead. Just know; It's perfection in movie format.

Oh yeah, and before you think Heath Ledger's hit on some new way of being the Joker, I have to say, before all the die-hard comic book reading Batman fans say it. The Joker was ALWAYS a sick sadistic twisted bastard with mental issues up the wazoo and less jokes so much as a burning desire to make things snook-a-loopy.

I think one of the problems with all of Batman's fighting is that on the big screen it's very hard to see what's going on. Sure he's using all kinds of great fighting skills but you can barely see them because naturally Batman does all his fighting late at night in the dark in dimly lit abandoned buildings or parking lots. I'd say in the first movie it was better because you could clearly see him getting his *** beat up in the League of Assassin's training and you could obviously tell when he was fighting at first. Then of course it dissolved into fight scenes I can almost see? And like he complains in the movie, his mobility is severely limited so most of his attacks end up being him bashing downwards with his fists on some guy's head, neck, shoulders, etc.

The pacing in this movie is nothing short of brilliant. I don't think I've yet seen a movie that does such a great job at keeping you so completely enthralled in it. The acting was also quite phenomenal. This movie was simply amazing.

And Raiha, I totally agree, that scene was one of the coolest throughout the whole movie. Really set the tone for how the Joker would be for the rest of the film.

Also, how many people are psyched for "Watchmen"?
That trailer was intense.

Okay, I'm slightly put out because I start making calls to pinpoint the showing time at our drive-in and one of my friends tells me I'm supposed to be at a nice get-together this evening.

So frill it, I'll be hanging with friends and totally missing the one movie I wanted to see on opening day.

TOMORROW!! TOMORROW!! I LOVE YOU, TOMORROW!!

Heath Ledger. What can I say? The man is now officially my god. Every little quirk and motion Ledger does is perfect. Not only is he the best Joker, but he's the best villain in any movie I've ever seen.

The movie was brilliant. I'm seeing it again. 'Nuff said.

I have a question that I would like to ask the more observant members of the boards who have seen the movie:
When The Joker pulls the "disappearing pencil" magic trick, where does the pencil end up? Nose? Eye? Mouth? It was too quick and I didn't catch it.
It's been bothering me...

I believe it was the mouth. Much like Shoot 'Em Up with the carrot in the head trick.

I could be wrong but it did happen very fast. And for a pencil to not just shatter it couldn't have been the forehead. Perhaps the eyesockets? But mouth is more likely and an insta kill.

I'm hesitant to agree with the contention that Ledger made the best villain of all time. I am hesitant, not in complete disagreement. However, I hope nobody will be able to post on this thread that Ledger's performance was not some of the best acting seen for a very long time.

You mean like the way he kept licking his lips and scars like he really did have them paining him at all times? It's a nervous habit most people with facial scars pick up. My cousin does it constantly and it really drives me insane. So that's probably why during the movie I kept flinching whenever he did it.

Strange, I have some scars on my face too, one of them in perfect position for some licking action, and I never developed that habit.

Ah well, who cares? Let's get back to worshiping the late Heath Ledger as THE Joker.

I saw this movie last night with a group of my friends ... it was insane. It not only completely demolished all hopes that I had for the movie, but I can honestly say that it is definitely my favorite super hero movie so far and pretty high on my al ltime favorite list. Period.

I went into the movie trying my hardest to have an unbiased opinion about Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. People were talking about an Oscar nomination well before the movie was released, and I fully agree.
The way in which Ledger portrayed the Joker was fabulous. The Joker, along with many other characters, had already been done before. Ledger's Joker felt fresh and new, he was the perfect villain. No morals, no restraints, no rules. He wasn't a beefy killing machine, he was the insane evil genius. Beautiful.

I thought the movie was over when Batman pulled Harvey Dent from the explosion and Rachel got esploded. Yeah, that's spelt wrong on purpose. Then it kept going and going to even more awesomeness. Joker + Nurse's outfit = WIN.

Saw the movie earlier today and loved every minute of it. It's definitely my favorite superhero movie of all time and I don?t think it will ever be topped. It?s that good.

Heath Ledger was absolutely nuts in the movie. His Joker literally stole?d the show. I also gotta commend Bale?s Batman, Eckhart?s Harvey Dent, and all the other casts of characters as they were perfect for their roles. Anyway, there?s nothing more I could really add that hasn?t already been said. Go see it as soon as possible!

There's so many awesome moments in the movie. Spoilers ahoy!
- Gordon coming back alive to save Batman was a jaw-dropping moment since I was really convinced that he was dead.

- Joker walking all nutty in that nurse outfit while donating bombs at Gotham?s Hospital was freaking hilarious.

- And when Harvey Dent became Twoface. The burnt half was terrifying to look at, but awesome nevertheless.
So, I don't want to die. But I'm not going to say it was everything I hoped for. And I think, if any of you saw my earlier post, I wanted this to be the greatest movie ever. In the end I was supremely disappointed.
I guess I can sum it up by saying it was the worst case of "too hyped up" I've ever seen.

Heath Ledger was awesome, Christian Bale was badass, Rachel actually died. These were the good parts, but overall I think the movie suffered from being 1) way too long and 2) not focused enough.

We had just finished the movie, and my friend asked me "do you remember what happened in the beginning?" I really couldn't remember. There were a bunch of unnecessary things- I think the Chinese business guy was useless.

I also felt the movie was too ambitious. Joker was the villain, and then Two Face comes along, and supposedly both are caught or whatever. I know Two Face was just a part of Joker's plan, but in the end it wasn't enough woven into the movie that nicely and it felt like two movies were mushed together into a giant 2 and a half hour mesh.

Also, where the hell was Batman in this movie? I felt like I saw Christian Bale's face for five minutes or something. There was so much side stuff that in the end I think the movie lost track of the main character.

And call me crazy, but none of the fight/action scenes really had me going.

So, I was disappointed. I think if I had seen it right when it came out, I would have been more impressed. It was way too hyped up for me and didn't deliver fully.

But there were some awesome moments:

Rachel was a great plot device. I really was impressed that they killed her, I for sure thought she would survive. I predicted that Batman would go for Dent, but I figured that naturally that somehow Rachel would make it out, too.

I was really surprised when Gordon came back, too. Never suspected a thing, this movie had some great plot twists, and that's saying something.

Heath Ledger owned The Joker, I mean really owned it. The twisted humor, that laugh, and the lip smacking and licking. It was seriously fantastic.

I'm not even going to lie:

It rocked!

I do agree in saying that Bale is the best batman to date! (And I'm excited to see him play John Connor in the upcoming terminator)

And no doubt, Ledger is the best Joker to date... His performance was so astonishing! (He was totally convincing as a bad guy without being over-the-top) He reminded me of Nicholson with a hint of that dude from "A Clockwork Orange"

And I have to agree again: Batman and Robin was absolutely the worst Batman flick ever created!
The only part I didn't like was when Rachel died. And the way they just dismissed Two-Face in less than 30 minutes.

Best part: Heath Ledger in a nurse's outfit! SO GREAT! Oh, and the malfunction he had with the explosion of the hospital...
One thing I might have missed though: Where was the dedication to Heath. This is his last full movie (assuming that they could still use him that other flick he had started when he died) But seriously... I didn't wait for the entire credits to roll, but I would have thought it was at the beginning. So tragic.

Well, I saw it finally. I was fairly satisfied with it, but I had a few problems.
-The Joker himself. Heath was awesome and he was both scary and a bit funny, but heres the deal: The guy's a walking contradiction. Seriously. That pencil thing? I was torn. Sure, it seemed like it should have been pretty funny, but the guy just killed someone. He has all these fun little eccentricities, but the whole point of the character is that he's a murderous psychopath who does it all for the lulz. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like him or what the deal was.
-There were young children in the audience. Seriously, people. Folks think some guy committed suicide over his role in this movie. Why the hell are you bringing your four year olds?
-The ending. It was way too depressing. I know Batman had nothing but the best intentions with the cover-up, but considering the fact that the Joker and his guys were waging all-out war on the city and thus the blame could have easily lain with them, it was not only pointless, but worse. Now the city is being told that the invincible, untraceable Dark Knight murdered five people in cold blood and is still running around the city in his Bat-tights at night? Sure, that makes me feel better.
Other than that, well-made, decent movie. I preferred Begins, though.

Personally, I think
Two-Face
should have been the main villain of this one. He's got a lot of the same motives and such, but he's harder to like, which is what always bothered me about the Joker. No matter how evil he got, you could never totally hate him. And Joker is pure evil at its finest.

Now just a quick note: don't crucify me on this one, please. This is the small opinion of one guy who didn't like the movie quite as much as you all did.

Heath Ledger didn't commit suicide, he accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs and passed out face first on his bed where he asphyxiated.

His suicide was a rumor, he might have lived if he hadn't fallen face forward.

P.S. made #1 on top 250 on imdb today!
