1.
Originally posted by Queen Asuka Am I the only one who didn't particularly like this show? I thought it was sort of stupid, myself. I mean, it was grungy looking and it was the same thing over and over again. I only watched it because it was what was always on. My parents really liked it, though. So yeah, whatever floats your boat.
There are a LOT of people who don't like this show. Married With Children and Roseanne began the revolution of family sitcoms that were "less than Brady Bunch." Before MWC, TV families were aggressively cheerful and there was always a lesson in the end. MWC showed that your family may not be all happy and peachy, like the Cleavers. MWC was more realistic than some other shows. The bread-winning father might have a low-pay job, like selling shoes. The house-wife might just sit around and watch Oprah all day. The daughter might be a slut. The son might be a loser. The family dog might just hate all of you. It was ridiculously stupid, but it was TV history. With Married With Children, there was no American Myth to shoot for. It was an exaggerrated look into a dysfunctional family, which you just didn't see on TV much before the 1980s.
2. I've been to Disneyland 3 times, and that damned California Adventure once. The first time I went to Disneyland, I don't remember. I think I was 3 or 4. The second time, I was 5 or 6, and too short to follow my older brother to any of the rides he went on. I went on the Tea Cups, though. The most recent time I went to Disneyland, I was 12 and I went with just my mother. Since I could both remember this trip and go on all of the rides, it was pretty fun. Shame I didn't get to do everything, though. A couple years ago, I went to LA with my father for a family reunion. Me and some of my cousins went to California Adventure, where there was only one rollercoaster, one good water ride, and the McDonalds was twice the price it should be (and the value meals didn't include the drink!) If I find myself with a good sum of money, I think I might pack up and drive to Southern Cal (only takes a couple of hours) and spend a weekend in Anaheim.
3.
Originally posted by Vegitto4 Maybe that faith is the only thing keeping them going from day to day. If you are apart of that Sect of religion, then Faith is what you live by. By Faith an the words of God( or Allah). That little hill is said to have great history on it. Muhammed ascended from there, and That was the same hill that jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount on I believe. But the jews wouldn't be fighting for something that Jesus did...more for Solomon's temple...
I think there's a difference between having faith and being blinded by faith. Yes, that "little hill" has a lot of history attached to it, but it's not worth fighting for, at least not to the extremes either side has taken it to. That's just my opinion.
4. I think Married With Children was FOX's longest running show, until it was cancelled. Now it's The Simpsons. I loved that show. It was sad when they cancelled the show. FOX was supposed to run "series finale" commercials at the end of the season, but the show was going to secretly come back for another season the next year! FOX changed their minds, and the show was cancelled for real. The cast didn't know the show was cancelled for real until later. I remember the episode of Futurama where Leela met a male cyclopse named Al. By the end of the episode, Leela was dressed up like Peg, and Al was starting to look strangely like Al Bundy. The funniest part is that Kathy Sagal, who played Peg on Married With Children, is the voice of Leela.
5. I'm American and watch a lot of TV, and I can tell you that MTV disgusts me at times. It's not so much the music videos, but the other 22 hours of programming they air. An hour? A freaking hour? Aren't their laws that prevent witnesses of crimes from behaving completely apathetically? I'm basing that guess off of an episode of Seifeld, but that's entirely beside the point. I admit that I am self-involved enough to not jump a dangerous man with a knife, in fear of my own safety, but I would've at least tried to help the dieing woman during the hour she wasn't being attacked. Just when you thought calling 911 for a mortally wounded person was common sense, a street full of people let a woman die. That's horrible.
6. In some ways, I don't think Buffy is that different from Faith. In fact, I think Buffy becomes more and more like Faith. Faith never listened to the Watchers Council. Buffy did for a while, but quickly rebelled against them, along with Giles. Remember when Faith accidentally killed a man? Suddenly, the rules for normal people didn't apply to Faith anymore. As far as she was concerned, she was somewhat beyond a normal human, and she didn't have to take responsibility for her actions. I noticed that during one of Buffy's motivational speeches this season, she said that normal rules don't aplly to her, because she's the Slayer. In fact, Buffy has been getting all high-and-mighty about her being better than everyone else. Faith was like that back in season 3. I do have to agree with the fact that Faith is a better Slayer, though. The original Slayer said it herself (sorta); the Slayer does not walk in this world. The Slayer is supposed to be a solo act. She's not supposed to have any friends. Back in season 3, Faith didn't believe in the ties of friendship and love. She saw what she wanted from someone, took it, and left. Kendra was the same, with the way that she didn't understand why Buffy had any friends. I guess the main difference is that Buffy is used to being popular; she's too used to having friends. One thing that sorta confuses me is the way Buffy behaved with Kendra and Faith. With Kendra, Buffy was rebellious by comparison. Kendra said that the Slayer isn't supposed to have friends, but Buffy defied that rule. Kendra believed in fighting calmly, but Buffy told Kendra to embrace that fire inside of her to become more primal. Faith told Buffy to give in to her urges, but Buffy always backed away and tried to behave in a more calm manner. When around Faith, Buffy began to act more tamed. But not too long ago, Buffy was urging Kendra to be wilder. You can tell I think about this show too much...
7. Mnemolth: Thanks, I knew I had to have something wrong, but I just couldn't remember what it was. Deus: I meant that they believe in the same god, not the same religion. The books might be different, but it's all about the same god. For lack of a better analogy, Islam and Judaism are about as different as Backstreet Boys and NSync; both boybands were formed by the same person, their songs say the same things with different lyrics, and their fans don't like one another.
8.
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Anime has been being dubbed in Spanish, French, Portugeese, and several other languages long before it was in English. There's simply a bigger market there and like everything, the US gets in the trends last. I mean. We just got boy bands within the last decade and The rest of the world has had them for eons... Now it's anime... and relaity shows which also have been around for eons in other countries... I'm not surprised at all.
We've had boy bands since at least the 1960's, although "Real World" is the earliest American reality show I can think of. Anyway, I've always wanted to get ahold of a Spanish-translated anime. They always seem to be unedited and I can understand raw Spanish a little bit more than raw Japanese. If I didn't have to work my way through a language barrier, I'd want all of my TV-aired anime to be in Spanish.
9. My information on the Israel/Palestine issue is a little rusty, but I'd appreciate any help/corrections anyone has. This is what I've heard. I don't expect it to be entirely (or mostly) right, but I figure hearing the facts from different sides here at OB might help... -Lifetimes ago, the Jews left the Holy Land for other lands. -The Palestinians lived in the Holy Land for years, but didn't own it. -Different nations around the world ban together to form several world-wide government systems (UN, NATO, ect.) -Hitler & Co. drive surviving Jews out of Europe. -Whoever else lived around the Holy Land with the Palestinians had left, leaving the Palestinians to finally start their own government. -The Jews move back into the Holy Land and also establish their own government. -The UN acknowledges the Jewish nation of Israel, rather than Palestine. -Israelis and Paltestinians both ruthlessly fight it out for years on end. -Both sides seem to forget that the main reason they both regard the same land as "holy" is because they all worship the same god by 2 different names. Didn't I already say this?
10. RicoTranzriq is a friend of mine. One day (I think we were at a friend's birthday party), I caught him logging on to OtakuBoards. Some time later, I decided to join. How he found OB is a complete mystery to me. :cross:
11. I'm a big Spongebob fan. It's a completely stupid show, but it's almost stupid in a tasteful way. There's just something about a TV show about a sponge who lives inside of a pineapple in a town called Bikini Bottom, that I just can't help but like. One image that will forever be carved into my mind is during the episode where Patrick was looking for whoever threw that peanut at the crying oyster (Spongebob did it). He told Spongebob "I'm so close, I can almost taste it" then Patrick did what looked like licking Spongebob's face. Pan the "camera" out, and he turned out to be licking a spotted yellow ice cream bar. I was disgusted and cracking up at the same time. :D
12.
Originally posted by Lady Macaiodh Does anyone think they're going to kill off Buffy by the end of the show, since there are all these potential slayers now? I have a feeling that's what they're going to do.
I thought about that, but then none of the Potentials would become the Slayer if Buffy died. If that were the case, one of them would already be the Slayer from Buffy's most recent death ("most recent." It's sad when you come back from the dead several times). I think Buffy is exempt from Slayer legend, now. After her first death, I think Kendra techinically became "the" Slayer, while Buffy is supposed to be long-since death (twice, even). When Kendra died, Faith became the Slayer. I think Faith would have to die in order for one of the Potentials to become the Slayer, not Buffy. I was just wondering... if the average Slayer doesn't live long past 20 (Buffy died exactly at 20), then what does that mean for Faith, who should be 22 by now? Shouldn't she have died by now, or is due to die very soon?
13. American Television isn't that disgusting. *turns on MTV* I'd like to withdraw my previous statement. :p
14. Another one of my main gripes with the radio is that all of the stations I listen to all go on a 5-minute commercial break (00:55) 55 minutes after every hour, so I have to endure 5 straight minutes of commercials.
15.
Originally posted by cloricus Lol. I'd say it's been taken out of context. I don't think it is any thing magical. If for example it you get hit by a car and don't die, that was luck. Kind of like hope, but hope seems to be a more present emotion. Not really sure. I do know I don't believe in any of the attachments to it, like "aren?t you luck" implying that some one is lucky taking the word out of its context. I'm not to sure though... I haven't really thought about it, I've just always used the reasoning from that red dwarf episode about them finding the luck virus. Though I guess now that some one has questioned that I'll have a think about it and form a less comical opinion. Or maybe I'll just go watch that episode of red dwarf again. Eps - That monkey was green... o_0...
I agree, especially with the part about Red Dwarf. Did you ever see the episode of RD8 where Rimmer used all of the diseases at once? Anyway, I think luck is just a name for something almost unpredictably good or bad that happens.
16. Hmm... who should die? Wood, Spike, and maybe half of the Potential Slayers. Yeah, that should work out nicely. If the show continued one more season (I wish), and I could choose a Scooby line-up, I'd want Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Willow, Anya, and (yes, even) Kennedy. Buffy is sorta necessary, Xander is the glue that holds the team together, Dawn is finally getting to be useful, Willow is necessary and bad as hell, Anya is hilarious, and Kennedy seriously needs some further developement. I'd also want Oz to come back, but then that'd just be weird, what with Willow coming out and all. --EDIT-- I forgot Faith! Faith has always been my favorite Slayer! If you ask me, that girl needs a spin-off, but without the generic formula Joss used on characters on both Buffy & Angel. (Fred=Willow, Lorn=Anya, Gunn=Xander/Spike)
17. I think it's time for Spike to die. He's not 100% demon like he was before, but he's not trying to make amends for past deeds like Angel. He can't/won't/shouldn't go back to being an awful poet, like he was before he was sired. He's touched a deep, dark part of his own mind, and he doesn't seem to want to be a good man again. He's not evil because he's a vampire, he's evil because he wants to be. There's no reason Buffy should trust him. Since he's had his soul, he's already fed off of a few people. This time around, if Spike helps out, there's absolutely nothing stopping him from turning on the Scoobies; no chips, no sense of morality. He's gone from a soulless demon to a sociopath who drinks blood and only helps out for his own reasons.
18. I missed the first half of the episode... Anyway, I found the rest of the episode interesting. The whole thing with William The Bloody(awful poet)'s mother was interesting. Spike learned the difference between what he did as a soulless vampire and what he's like now that he has a soul. Everything he did without his soul-- that wasn't him, it was a demon in his body. He doesn't blame himself. Angel/Angelus is different from Spike. Angel was so torn from his misdeeds as a soulless vamp, that he has a split personality. Spike doesn't refer to his previous self as another person. Angel does. Angel and Angelus are two different people. Although Spike came to terms with his soulless past, Angel never will. His two selves hate one another. I just saw this week's episode of Angel; Angel doesn't feel guilty about anything Angelus did over the past few weeks. As far as he's concerned, Angelus is some other guy who shares his body. Weird.
19. Well, I only listen to the radio in my car. I've found that, no matter what station you're listening to, you're going to end up with what's called "The Basic 6 Combo." The same 6 songs seem to play over and over all day. This is an example of what I hear when I listen to the radio for an hour... Generic Song A Generic Song B Generic Song C Generic Song D Good Song Generic Song E Generic Song F Good Song Generic Song C Generic Song A Generic Song C Good Song Generic Song C I've gone through pop stations, rap stations, easy listening stations, and 'ol school soul/R&B stations, and they're all like this. I'm willing to bet rock stations are the exact same. Confirmation, anyone? Yeah, so I prefer CD's and MP3s to the radio. Unfortunately, my car only has a cassette player (and I really hate recording my CDs onto tape), so I listen to a lot of FM radio while on the road.
20. I still wonder why the U.S. once gave Hussein chemical weapons back in the 80's, if he's such a horrible person. I mean, did he suddenly become a cruel dictator roughly 12 years ago, or has he always been that way and we just didn't care? Anyway, a previous quote reminded me of a certain cartoon I read. Here's an attached image...
21. I've been watching Slayers on the International Channel since the first episode, which was a long time ago, considering it airs weekly and it's all the way on Slayers Try. I love the show. It's hilarious. It's like a comedy that has action thrown in there every few seconds, and visa versa. It's flawless, and every character (good and evil) is likeable.
22. Words cannot express how happy I am about this. Ultimate Battle 22 is my favorite Dragonball videogame... ever. I love the amount of characters in it, and exactly which characters were put in it. I haven't played Budokai yet (which I hear has just as many characters), so I'll just have to settle for a cheaper, older alternative. Oh, and U.B. 22 had better be selling for cheap when it comes out tomorrow.
23. There's a WWW link under all of our posts, plus most of us usually advertise them in out signatures (which pretty much means you're advertising your site with every post you make).
24. I didn't catch the awards, but an acquaintance of mine did. He's into anime, but he had no idea what Spirited Away was. I was shocked and surprised and disappointed (all at once) by him. I didn't see S.A. but I at least knew about it. Of course, I do anime news for a friend's website, so I have to know these things. I think the award shows a lot of growth in terms of anime being shown in the U.S. At one time, anime was confused with American cartoons. And if you knew the difference, you were some kind of an underground fanboy. Now there's an anime winning an Oscar. Big step. I saw a commercial for the Bebop movie on Cartoon Network once. Looks like "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is getting more publicity than Spirited Away. If all turns out well, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door could be one of the highest selling Japanese animated features to hit U.S. theatres since Pokemon: The First Movie. (I never liked that title. It just screams "save up money for a lot more movies to come!")
25. I lucked out when I got my copy of Tenchi Forever. It was the last one on the shelf at Suncoast. If your Suncoast stopped shelving the movie, then (as previously stated) you should just order it. Or buy it online from someone like Amazon.
