Marching band issues

Hey, anybody in here in their school marching band? I'm just wondering if you guys have any problems with people from the other teams.

We didn't until recently. Suddenly a lot of groups in the school hate the band. It's not like we did anything.

It all started with the football team, they started insulting us a week ago at our practice. They ran by and called us fags and shouted out obscene things. We wanted to hurt them so bad, lol. Needless to say, their coach was furious, their kicker was suspended from a game and they ahd to apologize to every band period, and they weren't sincere either, it sucked.

Then of course the cheerleaders. They share our bus with us, well, one of our buses, and they were actually yelling at some of our band people to triple up in seats so they wouldn't have to share a seat with anyone, they said they might "break a nail",the sad thing is I ain't joking, kinda typical tho.

And then what happned today REALLY made us mad. See, all around our cafeteria they hang signs supporting the various sports. Well,we wanted a sign for the band,so the cheerleaders made us this crappy little scribble of a sign and threw it at us. When we tried to hang it in the cafeteria, the PRINCIPAL came over and yelled at us! He said we couldn't hang it up because another sign was supposed to go there, but then we tried to hang it somewhere else and he said not to hang it at all. It's really unfair, considering the cheerleaders alone have 3 signs for themselves and they won't even let us have one.

Anything like this happen in your school?

It's called Freshman, JV, and Varsity. It's not as simple as 'the cheerleaders' having three signs to themselves, there's three teams of them.

But I don't see why your principal wouldn't let you hang up a stupid sign. I always hated that cheerleaders got stereotyped as doing nothing but making signs for themselves and for ALL of the teams [and band]. You should at least be allowed to hang it up after it was made for you...your principal was either being irrational or had a really bad day.

We had the problem at our school where the band thought that everyone else in the school hated them/saw them as outcasts, so in turn they hated everyone else. It was really a stupid thing for them to think because they were good and the rest of the school supported them. Maybe your band carries that same air about them? Who knows?

I wasn't dissin the cheerleaders, but haven help me, they ARE all snotty to the band. We say a word to them and they freak out. They glare at us all the time. And they DO NOT make all the signs for the 3 different groups, they all say VARSITY cheerleaders, as the fresh don't even make signs, trust me,we asked around. I'm not syaing ALL cheerleaders are like that [as I realize you are one Babygirl] BUT they are here.

I don't know what's with the principal, our officers are going to talk to him...at least I think so...but tehy wopuldn't even let us keep it in the band hallway because they thought some kids would literally set fire to it. It's so stupid. We don't hate the groups,we just hate how they act.

Jesus christ.. I hate hearing the band. All it was , in highschool, was "Band this.. " and "Band that".. it was like a little 500 person sub-community within our school. If you weren't part of the band.. you missed out on ALOT apparently. I think both sides just need to grow up, you may just be taking this a bit too seriously Stardust. It's really not worth your stress.. Who give's a damn if the band has a sign or not? It's a sign....

You are all going to realize how incredibly pointless the petty bickering was in a year... *shrugs*.

Good luck,
Drix

O.O
Goodness, we've never had (have) problems like that!
The only problems we have are just putting up with the other schools that think they're better than us. Hah. We'll just see at UIL.....I may not be the best marcher, but hell, I try and I sure as hell don't have enough time for all the practices. NEVER, and I mean NEVER join up for Marching Band and have tennis or an after school sport at the same time. I'm about to have a nervous breakdown as it is...
Good luck Stardust, and don't let them get you down. People really and truly don't know how tough band is. We're not 'band nerds' or 'losers.' I'm proud to say that we turn out better than some of the football players at our schools.
*Go Band!* ^.^()

Well, excuse me, but the people in band have just as much right as those freakin' preppy cheerleaders do. Of course, I haven't had anything as extreme as what stardust was talking about, but if you say to someone *coughcheerleadercough* that you like band or something, they'll just look at you like you're some sorta geek. *punches random cheerleader in the head, not you BabyGirl, lol*

Holy cheese, that's exactly what the cheerleaders at my school are like. They think they're just the best and all that, and one sees you sitting in a seat across from their friend, they'll make you move. Gwad, it's horrorible. I hate cheerleaders....:grumble:

Get a life, grab some gumption and stand up for yourself. Don't move. It may be embarassing and humiliating being ridiculed by other people, but if you ignore it, eventually they will stop doing it. Believe me. I was not in a band or a group or anything, but for the first few weeks at my new school I was teased and stuff. I didn't respond. Eventually they stopped and now i am on good terms with most of them. Just forget about it, they only do it to get a reaction.

Hey Stardust don't you pay any attention to them. I was once in band until I had to drop out for personal reasons. At my first school some of the cheer leaders were and the others were just plain b*****s.
Thankfully we don't have to share a bus with them. The flaggers are the same way except we do share a bus with them some times.
*sigh* Don't let it get to ya, cause if you do it'll take all the fun out of band you'll wish you had never joined. So hang in their and have fun .;)

Ouch, jeeze,I'm sorry if I like something I'm involved in.It's not so much about the band,it's just not fair that we're not treated the same. i'm not totally stressed about it,or at all for that matter,i was just asking if it was like this for anybody else. And band gives you a lot of oppourtunities. You get to travel and meet new people and it is hard to do like three things at once,so you do kinda miss out on a lot,as you would with any activity, they all have their good points.

Who cares? You forget about everything in a years time, live for the moment y'know?

Gah, your school is a little bit on the insane side.

Our Cheerleaders and our Band got along fantastically, and even did joint routines at some points, especially our Dance Line and the Cheerleaders. The coaches are best friends and we all love one another.

The cheerleaders even made us some wonderful banners. It was all very much appreciated.

And band people are pretty much friends with everyone. Even football players.

It just disturbs me that your school is so "stereotypical," like the crap you see in movies.

Are you in middle school or high school?

I don't mind that you express your opinions.. you and the people that seemed to support your opinion just came off as whining. I hate whining. You complain that no-one likes you and yet you hold the cheerleaders in contempt, generalizing them. No one will ever treat anyone equally, it's impossible. You are riding on as much assumption as the cheerleaders you demonize on these boards, and that's the point I'm making.

Our high school cheerleaders and band get along very well, partly because every year there is at least one cheerleader who is in band also. They don't march, of course, but they're still in band, and we have no problems. As for the opposing team's cheerleaders, heh, we've got a little tradition. When we march past them before pregame, one of the low-brass section will call out a dress left or right (depending on where they are), and after that part of the band passed, they'd call us back to front. I did it last time :D. Our band has a lot of pride, and we aren't allowed to smile or anything, so it probably just flatters them we've got a LOT of traditions, and if you wanted to talk about those, we'd have to start another thread, because if every band has as many as mine does, it would deserve its own space.

It's high school.

We get along with our drill team that works with our music. We have no flags, baton twirlers, or anything like that.So it's not an issue.

It was kinda funny, we had a sign hanging in the cafeteria that said "Pluck the Eagles" our rival team, and somebody went up and changed the l to an H so it said "Phuck the eagles",oh course they automatically blamed the band...turned out to be someone on the soccer team...

I can't say im in the band, but I do agree most band members get a lack of respect. you shouldn't worry yourself because what your doing is amazingly challenging, how hard is it to catch a ball? lol( football is challenging I agree but playing a insturment is harder i believe)

About the sign issue, ask him where do you want the poster then? and make a statment that they allredy have 3.

We're sort of the same way at our school. There is no real internal conflict inside of the school, just between the districts and the school. Our cheerleaders make us banners also and our drill team goes along with us really well (although they don't dance very well sometimes...).
My school may not be the best, but we get along.

I'm in the marching band right now. Last year I was in the flag team. We all got along pretty well. The only way the people in the band would get pissed was if we screwed up on this one complicated move and hit them in the head with the flag. This year, the stupid Board of Education is screwed up and we can't have a flag team. So now all we gotta worry about is how well we play. We all pretty much suck, but the teachers seem to like us. There's not much conflict. Our whole band gets along. Except for this freaky dating thingy... It goes like this.

Zac is going out with Julie to get back at Colleen, who's going out with Frank to get back at Zac and this guy named Ryan wants to get with Colleen so he tries to kill Zac and Julie is hated by everyone because she's going out with Zac and everyone else wants to.

Whew! That made absolutely no sense did it???

Transform your band into the most fearsome fighting force your school has ever seen. BECOME Marxist Pythonians. Spread Pythonian propaganda everywhere. Try to convert EVERYONE in the school to Marxist Pythonianism.

If cheerleaders treat you badly, hit them back doubly hard. Same goes with the muscleheads. Don't use conventional weapons; that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, this kind of behavior requires action so perverse, so despicable, so irresponsible, and your band is just the people to do it.

Do this. Football games. Play the wrong songs at the right times. Instead of Notre Dame Victory at a touchdown, play the theme to Star Trek. When the team masses together to celebrate the win, play a porno beat. Don't fight them physically, fight them on their own turf. Fight them at the game. Destroy their minds (TRUST ME...IT WORKS!!!). Follow them around with your instruments, playing ominous notes (death marches work).

About the bus, bring your instruments onboard. Especially if you have BIG Tubas or Sousaphones...trombones work, too. Name your instruments, then place them on the seat next to you. If the cheerleaders ***** and moan, "ordering" you to move it, reply, "What? No, [insert instrument's name] is sitting here. He doesn't want to move, and I'm not about to get him up. Go sit over there. [insert instrument's name] isn't moving."

Cheerleaders never like it either, if you act rowdier and more...geekish than ever. Get a band geek who plays Dungeons And Dragons. Make sure they talk about Kito The ElfMage the entire trip, every trip.

Your band is already stigmatized as weirdoes and social outcasts. Embrace it. Run with it. The best way to destroy your adversaries is to act like they label you.

GEEK OUT! GEEK OUT!

Boy, that sucks. If it had been me in your place, I would've lost my temper a loooong time ago and would've chucked my quint set onto them until they were flattened, and maybe I would've sent a few drumsticks up their eyeballs too.

Cheerleaders, or ANYONE for that matter, do not need a seat to themselves. That's ridiculous.

I would post more, but I got to go.

It's the football players that are the jerks.

Over the summer during band camp and pre. band camp we get there around 8:30 AM and do our stretches. We also do laps around the track. The football players are there for practice and sit on there lazy butts laughing at us while we run.
But we dont let them get us down because we work 10 times as hard as them.
This is what our drumline section leader says:
"The reason we don't want to sound crappy this year is because we don't want the Football players to make fun of us more then they already do.... Even though they have no idea how much we make fun of them because they Suck!"
Yay!

Us band people need more respect!

Are you on the Drumline too, KKC? Drumline rocks! ^^ Although this year our drumline basically sucks. At the beginning of the year we had about 11 kids on drumline, and our section leader, Josh, was the BEST!! Alas, he and another fellow member were kicked off after two weeks because of their grades from the previous year. Then my sister Stephanie (Amibasuki) was promoted to section leader, but by then no one cared. Heck, some didn't care to begin with. Then another person quit, and this other dude keeps trying to take over Stephanie's position and thinks he's "all that." It's just going downhill, but we're trying to pick it back up.

If Amibasuki posts in this she might add a few things as well.

I just got back from band practice,it's darn cold outside,my lips were sticking to my piccolo, lmao.

No, im not in the drumline T_T But I really want to be when I get older. Im only in 7th grade and Im in the pit.
Our percussion is great every year. We've made it to finals for about... 5 years in a row now I think.... Were one of the top high school bands in KY.

I want to play the tenors! They are so awesome!

BWAH! Yay, I'm in seventh grade too! Hmm, would've never imagined...
Today in band, my teacher nearly exploded to us to tell us that this one girl named "Vickey" (and I immidiantly started laughing, knowing it was a "popular" (aka, b*****) person) was wearing the one of "our shirts" (aka, the band t-shirts) with the words "Band Geek" on the back. Now, my teacher is a former marine rank dude who's in the Royal Airs (well, I don't know what that is) and leader of some drum core thingie, so he has a low-tolerance level. Yeah.
Anyways, it gets annoying how all the popular people look at you, their faces half-covered in makeup to hide those lettle specks they call zits, and giving you that you-are-so-much-lower-than-me-on-the-popularity-chart-than-I-am-because-you-are-in-band look. (It's true, so true, for me...)
Yeah, well, glad they let you put of your poster. ^^ And PoisonTongue, your ideas were so funny and cool. :D Gotta go try some on Monday...

Being that I play the flute and I dislike most of the flute players (I happen to be friends with everyone else in the band except for the flutes-there are only 4 upperclassmen flutes and the rest of us are freshmen)-I totally regret picking the flute. I was so hectic about what instrument I'd pick three years ago when I was in sixth grade that I just chose the flute. I want to be in the Drumline SO bad now though! So what if they practice more or whatever-I just like it better. It's too late to change now, though. I should've realized that back in seventh grade or something. x.x
