Contact [PG -- VSL]

Short story
The bustling crowd of people jostled its way through the markets, the summer heat making people cranky and rude. She pushed her way through the square, elbowing those stupid enough to take her on. Her flight had been delayed; she'd spent fourteen hours at an airport with eighty other passengers, all of them grumpy about the delay. And now she had to fight her way through this tide of people in the markets. With a snarl, she viciously elbowed a brunette who'd shoved Terri out of her way. The brunette, a snooty business-type, by the looks of it, just sent her a look of disdain and continued on. Terri pushed her own straggly blonde hair out of the way and continued, spotting a likely place to get a cup of coffee. God, how she needed a coffee. With a sigh, Terri went to pull out her wallet as she waited in line at the coffee place.

It was gone, of course. Just what she needed.

With a sigh, Terri moved out of the line, apologising to the man behind her.

What is Contact?
Contact explores the ideas that you will have some sort of effect on every person you meet, and that every person has a story. Contact is an RPG in the sense that each player plays his or her own character. Unlike a normal RPG, where each group collaborates in telling the story, each post is a story in and of itself. The post before yours relates to, but does not really impact on, your post. Your characters do not interact or bond in any real way.

Six Degrees of Seperation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. Contact uses this theory. As an example, the first post is a story focusing on Terri. The second post is from the perspective of someone Terry came into contact with. For instance, the second post could follow the story of the brunette Terri had the altercation with, the man she apologised to, or even the pickpocket.

In each Chapter, there will be six posts. There are three 'rules' in Contact; each post must mention/somehow have contact with the post before them, each post must have contact with a person other than the previous post, and the last post in each chapter must somehow have contact with the character from the first post.

In each chapter, the first poster will be given a setting to work with. While the first poster is chosen, the remainer posters are free to post whenever they choose, as long as it relates to the post directly before theirs.

Requirements

Because of the nature of this RPG, you need to be flexible. Other players will be representing your characters. In some respects, there'll be less of your characters appearing, but in other ways, your characters will be free reign to anyone involved in the RPG. While you must work within limits of the described character -- i.e. if you choose to play the brunette, she must remain both snooty and businesslike -- because it is your story, you must also have the ability to expand on a character without being paranoid about playing someone else's character.

Please keep everything to a PG level. If you must exceed that level, label the beginning of the post.

Because of the unusual nature of the RPG, I require a sample story of no more than 400 words. Any sign ups more than 400 words will be automatically disregarded.

Your name:
Sample story:

Preferably, I would also like a link to a story you've written/RPG you've participated in on OB. This is, however, optional. It is not required in order to make it into the RPG.

I have to hand it to you, Asphy, this is an incredibly interesting idea for an RPG. :)

Name: Assuming you mean the character name, the character I'll be using goes by Nick. Otherwise, I'm Shinmaru! :D

Sample Story:
Nick had never driven his car faster than he was driving it on this day. He was late for school. Normally, this sort of thing would not have happened. Unlike his best friend, Michael, Nick was a good student, and he was always punctual. However, it seemed that this day was just not going to be his day. His alarm clock had failed to sound off, the shower was not working, and he?d forgotten his homework earlier and had to turn back and get it. Along with his frayed nerves over the prospect of being late, a slow, venomous feel of anger was coursing through Nick. He was usually a very even-tempered boy, but the events of the morning had conspired completely against that notion.

Nick continued driving speedily along the newly tarred streets, and he took the curves a bit sharper than what he would typically consider to be safe. He came to a stop in front of a crosswalk, and impatiently watched an old man crossed the street. Nick?s hands tapped irritably onto the steering wheel, and he momentarily considered honking the horn at the pedestrian. When the geriatric finally made it to the other side of the street, Nick blazed forward, sensing that he was almost at his destination.

About thirty feet from the school parking lot, a small dog darted out from the front lawn of the school. Nick?s foot slammed against the brakes, and he swerved wildly in order to avoid hitting the tiny mutt. The dog ran past the front wheel of Nick?s car, and made it across the street. Nick turned around for a moment to make sure that the dog was safe. When he looked forward again, he saw, to his horror, that he was barreling into another crosswalk, where a pretty young lady with long brown hair was crossing.

Since he did not have time to hit the brakes again, Nick swerved to the left, hoping beyond hope that there were no cars on the other side of the road, and also that the young lady would stay still. She did. She clutched her books against her chest, so frightened that she could barely move an inch. Nick sped away and turned the corner, driving away from the parking lot.

He would have to find a new spot to park today.
I haven't done many RPGs, but I was in Kill Adam and hero, so that has to count for something, right?

OOC: Does the 400 words include everything in the sign up, or just the Sample Story? My sample story is exactly 400 but if it needs to include the top bits then I'll change it.

EDIT: I changed it so everything excluding the OOCs are within 400 words.

Sakura

The quick clacking of keys could be heard, other than that the house was silent. In one of the bedrooms, there were two lights, the soft glow of an orange light table lamp, and the eerie white glow that was emitted by the laptop the person was working on. The lights cast shadows on everything in the room. It was 3am, Sakura was the only person in the house that was awake. She didn't want to sleep, she was working on a new program. She loved anything to do with electronics, and her room was packed with different kinds of equipment.

The girl yawned widely and rubbed her eyes, she wanted to complete this before going to school later that morning. Sakura frowned unhappily and saved her progress. She looked at her school work that she had to hand in, there was a 1000 word essay that she hadn't even started which was due later that day. Sakura cursed and pulled out the assignment sheet. She pulled up Microsoft Word and started her introduction.

By 6am, she had finally finished her essay and printed it out. Sakura looked at the time, there'd be no time for sleep because school started at 7:30 and she needed to get ready. There were large bags under her eyes from sleep deprivation but it wasn't the first time she went a day without sleeping. Sakura's mother was already awake and could be heard downstairs preparing breakfast, the sound of her father's snoring could also be heard from down the hall where her parents' bedroom was. Sakura took a quick shower and brushed her teeth, she changed into her school uniform. She brushed her chestnut hair and went downstairs to eat breakfast.

After breakfast, Sakura realised she left her bag upstairs so ran back up to collect it. The laptop was in her bag too, since she carried it almost everywhere.

Sakura left and went to the garage where her motorbike sat waiting. The silver paint gleamed in the morning sunlight. The girl put on the helmet and made sure her bag was on securely and started the engine, revving it a little. Then she kicked up the stand, pushed down her visor and sped off toward school, she'd be on time but she enjoyed the speed.

Sakura parked and slowly walked off to her first class, flicking her long hair over her shoulder.

Name: Mick

Story:
?******* hell, what happened to you?? Jim?s sharp, nasal voice cut through Mick?s
hung-over mind like a knife. Mick groaned, and ignored the question, instead throwing an arm over his eyes.

?What time is it?? he asked groggily. A slight shuffle was heard as Jim searched for Mick?s phone - it was generally considered a better time-keeper than anything else in the flat. Finally the shuffling stopped tormenting Mick?s screaming brain, signalling that Jim had found the fabled time-piece.

?The time is...? A pause as Jim wrestled with the phone lock. ?Eight fifty-one. We have nine minutes to get to work.?

Mick sat bolt upright.

?****.?

Later...

?This traffic is ******,? Mick swore as he fumbled with his tie, Jim at the wheel beside him.

?I?ll say. Hasn?t been this bad since that tanker spill a while back.? Mick grunted in acknowledgement, his mind still concerned with the important task of not strangling himself with his own incompetence. ?The hold-ups on the other side of the road too, from what I hear. People just looking.? The radio had delivered a similar report a few minutes ago.

?******* hippies,? Mick muttered. His tie was now safely knotted around his neck, trying desperately to cut off the circulation to his brain and failing. Mick was surly. Jim could tell. Groping desperately in the air Jim remembered how he had found his friend this morning and laughed softly.

?So... what happened last night at the pub? You came home pretty wasted...? This prompted a smile from Mick, a rare event on such a hangover blessed morning.
Looking at his friend, a sly grin on his face, Mick pulled a wadded piece of paper out of his pocket and unfolded it, holding it up so Jim could read. On it was the name ?Sandy?, with a phone number scrawled underneath it.

?You mean the hot red head at the bar?? Jim was shocked. Mick nodded slowly. ?Lucky bastard.?

Audrey

The first thing that registered in Audrey?s head was that there was a lot of fog. She had no idea where she was, it was cold, and there was this tight feeling in her stomach that she assumed meant only very bad things could come from all this. Time might have been a completely relative thing in the mist, but after what seemed like an eternity she began to feel very strongly that she might slide off the edge if something didn?t happen soon.

And then something did. A horn sounded. As with any strange horn, she expected the baying of hounds to follow, which would inevitably lead to her running for her life from a pack of wild, rabid dogs bent on tasting her blood. But there were no dogs, no wild noises. Just the horn, and the fog. The more she listened to the horn, in fact, the more serene it began to sound. It wasn?t the loud, braying thing that sounded the beginning of a hunt or a war. It was softer, sweeter, and she suddenly realized, moving closer.

A shape was beginning to appear through the fog. It was a person ? a man. Audrey felt her stomach do a little flop. Tall, dark, rugged. This man was beautiful. Sensuous. He held his hand out to her and looked at her with those dark burning eyes. ?Come on,? he said. ?I?ll lead you out.?

Audrey took his hand and a sense of overwhelming comfort and safety flowed through his fingers into hers and immediately went to her blood. She felt no anxiety at all anymore. It was just him and his promise of security, and the sweet, sweet? intolerable blaring, wretched cacophony of the horn.

She awoke with a start, and realized a little belatedly that the horn was a car horn and she, practical she, had just dozed off in a cab. Audrey rubbed her forehead and sighed as the taxi came to a stop. The driver glanced back at her and said, ?Here?s your stop, love.?

Absently she pulled some money from her purse and handed it to him through the little window before climbing out of the cab. The city was alive and bustling, and any trace of the serenity from earlier was once again completely gone.

New job, new city, new life. Audrey hated it already.

Michelle

Curling up tighter against the cold that seeped in under her door, Michelle slowly woke from a restless night of sleep. As her brain came alive, she registered that her toes were numb, and her legs were pinpricking all along her skin. She groaned, turned over, and smacked her nose against the plaster wall. Cursing, the girl dragged herself away from that side of the small, cramped bed, and flung her feet over the side.

Michelle gazed across the room into the cracked floor-length mirror, and evaluated her appearance. Her tousled, boy-cropped jet-black hair was sticking up in places, and she had dark bags under her dark blue eyes. Bringing a hand up to her face, she touched her pale skin, remarking on the hollow-seeming cheeks.

As her feet touched the floor, she shuddered. Her toes were tingling painfully as feeling came back to them, and she searched under her bed for her worn, plain black slippers. Being unable to find more than one, she threw up her hands in an exasperated gesture, and made for the bathroom.

Half an hour, a shower, and three cups of coffee later, Michelle gave up trying to brush her hair down. She grabbed a hat, shoved it down over her head, and grabbed her boots. Pulling them on, she grabbed her keys and purse, and went out to her car.

Canyon. That was what she called her car. This car was the only good thing in her life. Her good-for-nothing ex had left it for her as consolation, and despite the negative feelings attached to it, it ran pretty well. Pretty well for a ?94 Chevy Cavalier, that is. The car was three shades of rust (hence it?s nickname), and had only three hubcaps left.

With a sigh, she slid into the car, and pulled out of the driveway. Her legs were going numb again, due to having no working heating system. The short drive to the restaurant she worked at was silent, except for the hum of the cars engine. Michelle parked around the back of the building before going to sign in. As she entered through the kitchen door, the shriek of the manager, Holly, told her it was not going to be a good day.

I'll look for a good example of my posts, but otherwise, this'll have to do.

A Life Less Frightening, A Life Less Frightening?

Walking into school, getting glared at, all because of something as small as a self reclusive book. So what if they read it, they hate me now, but at least I never caved in any of their skulls, maybe that is what they want me to do. So should I walk over there, maybe show them what I want to say, but I turn to jelly when I?m nervous, maybe I shouldn?t?

Ok, so I will then, they?re staring at me, but my hands remain at my side, I try to speak, but nothing comes out, so I stand there, with their eyes boring into mine, like I am nothing more than the piece of whatever underneath there feet. But then I see it, glinting fury, burning hatred, slicing metal, blood dripping?

The ground breaks beneath me, and they run for hell and beyond, as I hold the hole protruding the blood of my body leaking out, the pain as the air is sucked from my lungs as the crowd gathers, I see a few people I know, they just walked in to see me falling, they never had anything to do with it, but they?ll be blamed, it?s my fault isn?t it.

The world is zooming out of focus, tears leaking from my eyes, not being able to tell the people that I love, that I love them, not being able to say my goodbyes to my family and friends, and not being able to take back everything, and as the world spins out of control, the world focuses into a light, and a tunnel. I?m on my hands and feet, the hole in my stomach has gone, and I crawl towards the great mass of light. And finally, it?s right there, waiting to be broken through, one step is all need, and I do?

They guffaw, giggle, and chortle in my direction, and I?m just sitting on my own, the area surrounding me, the place as it always is, and I decide it?s better not to confront them, what?s the worst that could happen? Well considering there immense hate of me, there is a lot, so, I close my eyes, and take it as it comes.

Every day, I don?t ask for much, sometimes I would settle for a life less frightening?

name: Tracy McKermic
The rain hits my skin like dead slugs. The slugs seem to be gooey, they seem to just sort of slowly slither off my body. They seem to be alive. The day is gloom epitomized - dark, brooding clouds; the smell of fresh rainwater; the way the wet streets, sidewalks, and roads look - reflecting dismally anything and everything; the feeling in my head. And I?m out walking, a cop of his own looking for something to kill, bust, or otherwise torment.

Slop, slop, slop - it?s my shoes slopping on the ground, talking to me. Cars blur past me, kicking up the wet on their wheels, dousing it all over. I pass an alley and find a present amongst the busy clamor of the city. I see the shadows of a woman and a man. I can smell something's wrong.

The woman eyes me. Those eyes say fear. I look at the mugger, a big, strong, stone-carving of a man. He holds the purse, eyes me with his open-mouthed loon. His teeth edge out like stakes - stakes I'd like to punch in. I come close and reach into the depths of my leather jacket. I pull out the sender of death. I point its mouth at the woman.

?Don?t resist,? I say. She eyes me wonderingly. Don?t resist? What? her eyes mirror. Water?s welling in her eyes, even though what?s falling from the heavens is enough.

?J - j - just don?t, don?t shoot me,? she says. I shake my head, but my hands contradict.

?I won?t,? I say, and put a bullet right in her heart. Her face crumbles into pain, she lets out a cry; her life is over.

Slop, slop, slop. I walk away, back into the city?s endless commotion, just another man. The goon stares on at me until I'm gone. I put my gun away. The rain keeps falling; it?s gloom and doom.
Sascha (Sah-shah)

Sascha,

By the time you get this letter, I?ll be gone from your perfect life. The times when you claimed you?d do just fine without me have finally spilled over, and I won?t stand for it anymore. I?m not going to be the prize of your life any longer. The past seven of my life was the largest waste of time I?ve ever spent. You drain me. Your words burned away my brain cells, and for months, I believed every word you said. I was stupid for loving you. I was foolish to even hope that we could be together, and that it was all just my imagination. However, I?ll say you wondered me with your vast abundance of excuses. But I?ll retort to the fact that not a single ?I love you? was ever true. Everyone was right about you, and I should have listened a long time ago; before this.

I don?t want anything from you. I?m gone from San Diego. And I intend to leave you, and all of the horrible memories behind. The only thing I take with me is the precious life inside of me. I make a vow to give him the life you would never be able to give. Oh, and don?t worry, I?m not pressing for a dime in child support; I?m capable of taking care of myself and of my child.

Erica

?Ah, dude, that?s harsh.?

?Whatever she wants to do, I don?t care,? Sascha scratched at his chin, ?As long as I don?t have to pay for child support.?

?It?s your kid too,? Travis tried to smooth out the crumpled up paper.

?It was her fault for not staying on the pill.?

?You still should have used protection.?

?Like she said, she doesn?t want a dime from me. That?s all that matters to me.?

Sascha snatched the letter and lit a match. Deep inside, his heart ached to watch the paper burn. He knew he really messed up with her, and he knew that he would regret every second of every day of every year. Erica was gone for good this time.

 • 1 month later...
I was walking hurriedly to the train station, a pair of exploding ear buds on my ear. I get lost with the loud music. It helps me ignore everything around me. It helps me feel invisible. But when you're walking and have someone staring at you, or rather at those things that are almost bulging out of your plunging neckline... you feel all of you is existent, everyone is looking at you, judging, or in this case, lusting.

I reached the station and went to the train with this maniac behind me. I sighed and let him watch as I closed my eyes and tried to drown myself to irreality again. Just as I suspected, he still followed me when I got off the train. They always do. This time though, I was not in the mood to flirt so I sped up, but he still caught up with me. I gave up and slowed down, stopped my mp3 player and looked at him with a face asking what he wants.

"Hey, can I ask what time it is?" I grumbled and showed him my bare wrist with a clenched fist.

"I have no watch." Nice shot.

"Right, what?s your?" I rolled my eyes and stopped walking.

"Look, would you just? walk in front of me?" I waited until he did. He smirked and walked his way, not without a few more glances at me.

I reached my destination, a dark alley with people of my kind. I threw my cigarette and crushed it with the tip of my red stiletto.

?Dammit, Jean. Stop wasting money on that thing.? I grabbed and threw away the pot my friend is smoking. ?I could?ve used all the money you waste for that to buy stuffs for next term, *****.? Before she could say anything, a familiar voice beat her into shouting at me.

"Come here, you whore. You're ******* late!" My pimp.

I removed my topcoat, revealing my skin half covered by a haltered top and tight miniskirt, then put on the fake but sexy smile I wear every night when facing a new client as I walked towards him and an old disgusting man in a suit.

Reena May

BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEP! Great another day, another day of show. Its always the same every day. I get up put on my make-up, drive to school and put on an act. I smile to everyone, of course only the "cool kids", I'm sick of it. Sick of being the girl everyone looks up to, but of course I'm Reena May the most gorgous girl in school. Its all a lie. I'm not perfect. I'm not gorgous. Im mean to people; i laugh when my friends make fun of the girl in the ugly red turtleneck. I get good grades and stay on the top of my class. I run track, but im sick of it. Sick of being perfect.
"REENA ELIZABETH MAY IF YOU DONT GET OUT OF THAT BED NOW I SWEAR IM GOING TO BEAT THE LIVING **** OUT OF YOU!" Thats my father. If only people knew, knew my home life. My dads an acholic, he works as a bartender so its part of his job. He also has anger problems. Its hard sometimes, to cover the marks he leaves on me. If only people new. BANG "REENA GET THE **** DOWN HER NOW!"
I roll out of bed knowing I've done it now. I know I'm going to be late, my cars broken and i have to walk to school.
I make my way downstairs, my fathers passed out on the floor. I step over him like its something that happens every day. I grab a poptart and head out the door.
Today i have track practice...maybe ill skip. I found some of my dads pills. If I did it know one would know.

"If you did it know one would know"

"Who said that" i say looking around. Theres a little girl playing ball across the street.
I shake the feeling away and continue to walk.
If i did kill myself no one would care.

Dallas

It had caused her great pain to look into the face of the woman that stood before her. The woman was tall with a slender frame. Her face seemed too long with thin lips and eye-brows, and a slender nose. Her delicate mouse brown hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail, which was held back with gel or moose to keep it from falling out of place. Her make-up was thick and unpleasant and her perfume was overwhelming. She wore the latest fashions, though her slight frame and lack of curves made the outfit look rather gaudy.

The woman squinted her eyes at the sight of the girl, pressing her lips together in distaste.

"Hello, Maryann." The girl said gently.

"Dallas." The woman replied shortly. "What do you want?"

"Where's Mark?" Dallas bit her tongue, trying desperately not to be bitter.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." The woman turned her head away, pulling her tall lemonade from the stand that was next to her lawn chair and sipped at the cups edge.

"********!" Dallas found herself swearing. She took a deep breath and looked away from the woman.

"He doesn't love you any more and you're a fool to keep chasing after him." Maryann held her cup just above her lap as she leaned back in her lawn chair again.

"I just want to talk to him." Dallas kept her eyes from Maryann, knowing full well that the two years older woman would see the tears that were trying to escape if she looked up.

"He won't want to talk." Maryann shook her head and played with her cup.

"Please." Dallas choked back tears as she begged the woman.

Maryann brought her head up to look over Dallas and her freakish outfit. She glared at the girl before waving her towards the house. "He's in the lounge," Maryann said as if she didn?t care as Dallas raced by her.

"What do you want!" was the first words out of Mark's lips when he saw Dallas rush in. "I thought I told you to stay away from me?"

"I just wanted to tell you something." Dallas replied, her voice shaky much like her body was, but she managed to keep eye contact with her former lover.

"Well out with already." Mark said bitterly.

"I wanted to say thank you for every thing." Dallas smiled.

"What?"

"You showed me what it was to love and to know what love was, even if you did cheat on me." Dallas allowed a slight hint of laughter to escape her lips. "You will always be in my heart, Mark. Thank you for everything." Dallas smiled brightly, stuck her hands in her pockets, and slowly walked out of the house without waiting to hear Mark's reply.

Guest Aelys
Emerence

There were two passions in her life: books, and books. The first was causing a dull ache in her arm at this very moment, under the weight of three leather-bound tomes. Her decision was hurried by the protest in her muscles, and she carefully placed two of the dusty volumes back on their respective shelves. The wooden stool quivered beneath her stiletto heels.

Despite having relieved her left arm of the burden and grasped the remaining book in her right hand, the arm began shaking furiously, as a belated reaction to the tension it had been placed under. She swayed towards the nearest cushioned couch and landed with a puff, cursing her poor health.

Folding slim legs beneath her petite-to-medium frame, she realised what a sight she probably was. A gaunt, elegant lady which's natural grace was overshadowed by porcelain-like frailty. Sickly pale skin hid beneath sporadic freckles, the whole lot was obscured by kohl-rimmed hazel eyes and framed with café-avec-un-minimum-de-lait fluffy hair.

A twisting lock obstructed her sight as she scanned the first page for the original owner's ex libris. After marvelling at the neat twists adorning the title, she spotted a tiny, curly name beneath the artwork. By coincidence, it was the great-grandmother whom she was named after, Emerentia, an as ardent book lover as she was now. An ancient name it was, even during the times of the deceased, so many shortened it to the french Emerence, or Emer.

People found her peculiar. Most judged her to be a little insane. Excentric, distant, and yet in the heart of society. She was appart, this Emerence, and lonely since her brother's death. Not that the man had been good company? Her filthy wealth originated in the maison de plaisir she had inherited from this sibling. She had gladly left the establishment over to some employees, interested only in the profits it made, which were amply enough to maintain her and her library.

It was not, however, this unusual source of income or the unlimited love for the relics stored in her spacious residence which gained her the critical eye of many. It was her second passion: the abnormal one of books.
