The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2006 (Final)

Hello again everyone! Although it may not seem like it, putting together this annual event is a huge undertaking! Thank you to members of the Nifty Fifty Committee for helping me put everything together (and who this year decided to remain anonymous, oh well.) This year's awards have been the most difficult to complete yet, as we had so many great members, threads and things to celebrate.

The first 30 nominations are easy to decide, but after that it becomes incredibly difficult to figure out who should make the final cut. While not everyone may agree with this list, every attempt has been made to make it the most fair and complete we have put out so far.

I would also like to make a point of thanking our artists, who went above and beyond the call of duty this year: Delta, Ezekiel, Eclipse, White, DeadSeraphim, and Redemption. Also special thanks to SunfallE, GTK, and Retribution, whose artistic contributions can also be seen here.

So without further ado, enjoy...

The OtakuBoards Graphic Worm

"The fact that graphic artists from all walks of styles could come together and make a harmonious piece simply made it something to behold. There's something about working together with others and having that strange feeling in your gut of Is my piece going to work? that draws one to it. The OBGW was about blending pieces and styles, not standing out on your own, and to make something of unity that could be admired."

Otakupedia

"Because it was destined to happen. OB has brought anonymous people together and had them interact in such a plethora of intense and interesting ways over such a (comparatively) long period of time that it just might have one of the richest histories of any message board in history. It's only natural that all this lore should eventually be compiled in a Wikipedia-esque format."

Doublehex

"This guy can create the most detailed fictional worlds, like Argo Arx Arcanum, the academy of war and magic in Citius Altius Fortius and the fantasy realm of Areth in Summoners of the New Age, and I personally feel lucky to have been able to see them come to life in Adventure Square and OB Anthology. The amount of background information he comes up is overflowing, but very gratifying when you get to sink into those worlds."

Deadseraphim

"The man's a comic genius, he alone accounts for nearly two thirds of my AIM quote away messages. When I'm down, he picks me up... and throws me down a flight of stairs. He turned me into the band Neil Perry, and then The Locust, and now apparently I'm a sexy RnB singer. I'm glad I have Alan around so I can be all these wonderful things."

BKstyles

"Because BK, with his constant planning for something new, his unblemished attitude, and funny disposition on and off the site, is a truly dedicated member of OtakuBoards. He always tries his best at whatever he posts and lets others know he's only there to help, even when the person he's helping doesn't want it. For these reasons mainly, he's truly Nifty on OB."

- Tekkaman

Papa Smurf

"He's Papa Smurf, for cryin out loud! His reputation on the boards for debating the point he believes in until he's blue in the face (*laughs*) has always been a high point for me. He never tries to be offensive but he does get caught up in his subject of origon a lot, thus, causing his ability to chop anyone down until the person he was talking to is left feeling like their parents just went missing. I loved talking to Papa Smurf and though he is gone, he will never be forgotten; he will always be Nifty."

- Tekkaman

Allamorph

"Since Allamorph has joined OB, it felt like everything clicked for me; I couldn't have imagined a better person to talk to. If it wasn't for Mafia, I don't think I ever would've talked to him but now that I have, I know that he fits right in with the rest of us here on Otaku. Allamorph, in short, is the most down-to-earth, simplistic-yet-ingenious, realistic person I've met since BKstyles and i've only known Allamorph since the event of Mafia."

- Tekkaman

Sara

"Because the only reason I didn't nominate her before was that I know she's going to get in anyway (hell, she'd get in even if nobody nominated her. Sara's that good). But now that she's nominated me, it's good tact and even better ***-kissery to let my support be known officially. Sara's seriously one of the most remarkable people I know, period. And what's more, I'm pretty sure she gets that frequently. Many oldies (I'm starting to hate that word) have lots of admiration and respect coming to them, but in my eyes Sara's the only one who actually deserves the outright awe that many members bestow on them."

- John

The Complaint

"It reminds me of that part in The Truman Show where someone accidentally opens a false wall allowing Truman to see a group of secretive people with mysterious doings. Except in this thread, the wall fell over because one of the people in the room was bumbling around scratching his ***, then when it was open everyone started yelling at him and everyone on the outside saw it and started laughing until the ones on the inside started throwing hissy fits at them and finally just took off their paper hats and disbanded their secret club.

"So you can see the similarity there, I think."

- John

Draw My Character!

"It?s Nifty because: The whole concept of the idea was cool. It drew a lot of artists, that normally wouldn?t post in the Art Studio, to show off their art to the community through a game kind of thing. The time limit kept the game rolling and it was no surprise that this thread would reach the amount of posts it has so far. Hereby I?d like to say that Sara did a very Nifty job by putting this very Nifty game on OtakuBoards."

Ninjas or Pirates?

"Go ahead and read through that thread. I dare you. It's filled with piles and piles of nonsense. However, it's probably the most fun I've had defending something ever. I wish dearly that Your Mother didn't ruin it for everyone because we weren't really doing anything wrong until he came along. However Pirates won in the end, anyway. I guess it doesn't help that the Ninja-Fanboys made it so easy."

- White

Citius Altius Fortius

"Despite it being an elaboration on already existing concept, it brought a world of possibility within a widely common field of RPing that involved high school drama, action, and magic. To the members involved, it moved along quickly yet neatly as well. It captivated everyone's attention and we as the members took it to 140+ pages before it's abrupt death. Tis true it's death was as well due to it's popularity, but in either case it is noteworthy (or nifty) both because of it's success and failure. While it's second installment was not as succesful, it too drew largely. But it could not beat the original."

Otaku Idol 2

The Great OtakuBoards Scavenger Hunt

"Along with the other nominations in this post, this was one of the most entertaining times I've ever had at OB. If enough riddles can be mustered up, I hope we can do it again next Summer."

- John

Delta

"If you've seen just one of Delta's banners you know where I'm coming from. She's very talented and comes across as a really nice person who's always willing to help out. She also given me links to a couple of sites with hot Bleach fanart, but I'm sure didn't need to know that.

"The 'Boards are so much brighter and creative thanks to her and her talent, and that makes her exceptionally nifty."

Fasteriskhead

Rachmaninoff

"The very name Rachmaninoff is nifty and the person behind the name is as well. For someone who has yet to even be a member for a month, their posts are insightful, witty and downright fun to read. Making them one of the niftiest new people I?ve met since I joined."

- Aaryanna_Mom

Charles

"Charles is one of the most down to earth members on the boards who is not only open and friendly to all members, but has a fun if not questionable sense of humor. From those silly cats playing ping-pong to the more questionable would you like to buy a vowel avatar, to his tireless devotion to Otakupedia Charles is definitely quite nifty."

The Game

"Because I hate it. Everyone hates it, yet no one could stay away from it. It is 10 pages of "The Game" stories and even some posts simply saying, "Oh ****, I just lost it". How this thread did not get locked is beside me. But the point is, it brought about one common thing for everyone to be ****ed off at, and it is a truly entertaining thread to read when I'm bored."

"Retribution ALWAYS knows what I'm thinking. Always!!! That in itself is really nifty. Everytime there's a debate thread, I read what Retri's written, and then I'm like, "damn, he said EXACTLY what I wanted to say!" Plus he's nice enough to humor me and my silly conversations. >_>"

It's usually a sleeper forum, and it can go for weeks without a post that doesn't involve myOtaku modification help, but every once in a while, you get a real gem. A suggestion of the .com variety

"Hi im new here but thats not to say that i dont have an idea or two

"I think that the .com should possibly be abolished and changed to .wand or even .elf

"This would give the website a more mystical feel and I feel that it would imrpove the experience as a whole. It would also attract attention from people searching the internet for wands who might have an interest in the community."

Sandy/White

"Sandy and White are like Yin and Yang, the sun and the moon, fire and ice. Both are beloved members of the staff, but each represent a much different portion of the community. Over the past year they have both proved their worth to the community, making the competition for becoming OB?s next Event Master much more interesting in the process.

"These two members, more than any others, defined the past year at OtakuBoards. Regardless of the outcome, both should be proud of the hard work they put into their respective events. The community and I are extremely thankful.?

"When crime rears it's ugly head, when the world is threatened, when the very nations we live in face the gravest of times there is but one Team who will rise to the challenge and fight for what is right, good and lawful. The Super Otaku Force is not that team. However, it did play a big role in making sure that a cell phone thief did not go unpunished and made the world a better place."

"The Secret Staff Yaoi Lounge has been surrounded by mystery and intrigue for years, with few knowing whether it's simply a myth or if it actually does exist somewhere within the depths of OtakuBoards. And those who do know aren't saying anything. It's like OtakuBoards' own fountain of youth; everyone wants to find it but, try as they might, no one has been successful."

"You could tell just from the title and author that this was going to be a great thread. And it was. Poking fun at asiaphiles is always fun, but even better was poking fun at someone overreacting about asiaphiles. . . . The mental image of Papa Smurf dressed as Darth Vader and choking a Naruto cosplayer also helped."

However, they do sometimes draw attention away from original stories..."

Hardwired Online

"Hardwired Online was originally created with the name Play It Friend Codes (or something like that) and was made with the intention of being a sort of hub for OB gamers to share their friend codes so they could play their DS' together. It was sweet for a long time but there was something missing. Other consoles.

"And thus Hardwired Online was born. Combining the idea of the WiFi friend codes thread along with 360 Gamer Tags and MMORPG listings. It now serves as a thread where you can fight, face, or fish with other OBers no matter what you play your games on."

"By interviewing members on a variety of subject matter, Mimmi created one of the most dynamic discussion threads in the boards history. It?s only fitting that it was placed in OB Anthology, where it would be safe from the wrath of our less literate members."

As always, those members who continue to participate in Community Events rock. Whether it be Nifty Fifty, Labyrinth, or The Legionnaires, these are created with the goal of getting people interested and involved in OtakuBoards. If you have a great idea for a Community Event, let us know! Without your participation we can only go so far.

Thank you once again to everyone who has helped me in creating and running Community Events over the years. My participation with this forum certainly won't end here, and neither should yours.

'Til then,

Anyways, congrats to all the winners. And to the other graphic makers, you all did a fantastic job (especially to Eclipse - I know you were bored and all :p ).

Wow. Simply wow. Last year, when I saw the nifty fifty, I said to myself that I wanted to be on that list. And now, to see myself along with some of my dearest online friends... it's a good feeling.

Also, whoever made the banner for my nomination (Zodiac Sign) is a person whom I love now. It's just a shame I can't thank you via PM since I don't know who did it.

It's been a long time since i've posted, (3 weeks) lol. It feels weird. Like riding a bike all over again.

EDIT: Also, who knew that my favorite color was purple (and green)?

Yeah, the Game is pretty nifty.... Aww, crap!! (I lost the Game.)

Wow. I really don't believe I'm up there. Maybe someday I'll get a set that describes me.... (^_^)

Congratulations all!

Oh crap... I can't believe that I actually got it, haha!

But I am wondering... who's descision was it to make me a latino gangster? Regardless, it awesome, haha.
It's because you are a latino gangster! Dur, don't even lie Mike. I've seen your pictures.

I demand to know why the Secret Staff Yaoi Lounge doesn't have actual yaoi on it! Where's the fun?!

But seriously, congrats to all the winners and to Shy, of course, for carrying this off with such grace and ease. It's been a very good year~ <3

You guys made me lose the Game.

I think it was Blayze that nominated the Arena Mob, not me - but it's great to see so many things I nominated making it through to the finished product. And severe kudos to the artists. It looks even better than last year.

.:EDIT:.
Who made the 'OB Intrigue' graphic? Whoever you are, you need a credit in my signature...

Congratulations to everyone. :catgirl: And the manner in how the winners was displayed is in itself very nifty. And though I don't feel very nifty, thank you to everyone who nominated me and to those who actually chose me as well.

If someone had told me a year ago that I would not only join an anime site but be voted nifty by the members, I would have never believed them.

The real truth is that the entire community here is what's nifty, every single one of you. :catgirl:

"Because BK, with his constant planning for something new, his unblemished attitude, and funny disposition on and off the site, is a truly dedicated member of OtakuBoards. He always tries his best at whatever he posts and lets others know he's only there to help, even when the person he's helping doesn't want it. For these reasons mainly, he's truly Nifty on OB."

Woot, I is nifty ^^. Thanks all. Kudos to the person who did my banner as well for knowing what BK stands for (yeah, I know i've mentioned it plenty of times but i still get PMs from people asking me, heh).

Grats to the other winners as well, the banners look awesome (i personally like the CAF, Scavanger hunt, and GFX worm as well).

Also Zeke, there's no yaoi on it because...*shifts eyes from left to right*...it would be evil. *sprays holy water everywhere*

I am a bit bitter that I had to share my spot among the Fifty Nifty, but since this is the first time I actually got in it, I shouldn't be complaining. ;P

Besides, if there's one person I'd be willing to share my spot with, it would definitely be White. Like the text said, I believe both of us bounced from being back-row members to the absolute front row during last year, with both of us becoming mods and competing in OA2 etc.. So cheers for us, Whiteman! ;D

And of course thousands of thanks to everybody who deemed me nifty! I feel loved... <3

Keep them lubins coming! ;)

Seriously, I think it's cool that I got to share a spot with Sandy. It makes us unique instead of being alone. You can't nominate Yin without Yang!

And those graphics are gorgeous. I especially love Otakupedia. Awesome.

Thank you for deeming me Nifty and congratulations to all the nominees and winners! Once again this year's Nifty Fifty is visually appealing and a great list of some of the people and events that make theOB the end all Niftiest places to be on the internet.

Congratulations to everyone...especially you size 1 font!

Now this is just awesome. I have not even been here a year, and look, I've essentially gotten an academy award (that IS what the Nifty Fifty is, right? The OB's Oscars?), so this is effin awesome.

Thanks to Sandy for nominating me, and props to my favorite Brooklyn Asian for nominating my greatest achievement, Citius Altius Fortius. I still need to write the novel >.>
The Arena Mob

"The Arena Moderators are legion - Lady Asphyxia, Revelation, Jokopoko, Ozymandius Jones, Ezekiel, Sandy and myself - and we have all managed to work extremely well together in the past. Even if Zeke and Sandy always get to close threads before me..."
Um...WRONG!

It was I who posted that nomination, not Raiyuu. He's not even a part of the Arena Mob. Grr.
