Fall '08 Anime Season

Finally decided to not be lazy and start this thread. Hopefully we will get some decent discussion going and be able to keep it up, because the season looks seriously stacked.

For reference, there is a list of fall shows here.

Shows I am definitely interested in watching:

-- Yozakura Quartet. The premise (a quartet of teenage superheroes protects a city from supernatural threats) sounds promising enough to me, and I like the character designs. Plus, with Heroes failing as hard as it has during its first two episodes, I predict I will need my weekly dose of superheroes very soon.

-- Clannad After Story. Um, hell yes? I loved the first season of Clannad, so I am ridiculously hyped for the second season. From what I have read and what people have told me, everything that makes Clannad so great is in After Story, which boggles my mind, considering I adored the first season so much. If you have not seen Clannad, then you need to get on that, like, right now so that you can watch this.

-- Shikabane Hime: Aka. Gainax + crazy action? I am so there. The basic premise (undead girl must hunt 108 corpses to gain entry to heaven) sounds OK, but I am mostly hoping for an awesome action overload. Need something to offset the emotional gutpunch of Clannad each week, haha.

-- Chaos;Head. Dagger's fanspazzing has caused my hype levels to go to 11 with this show. Don't let me down!! Haha, the show does sound right up my alley, though, and it appears as though this will be quite the purdy series (in its own macabre way lol). I am so ready for this!

-- Shugo Chara!! Doki--. Duh. Shugo Chara! is one of my favorite current series, so as long as people sub it, I will continue watching. Moar Amu plz.

Shows I am partly interested in:

-- Hyakko. Barely have any idea what it's about, but Aya Hirano and a couple of comparisons to the wonderful Minami-ke pique my interest a bit.

-- Toradora!. loltsundere. Not as entranced by them as The Des, but hey, it sounds funny enough to warrant sticking with it for at least an episode or two.

-- Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka. The premise does not strike me that much, but the cast is stacked, so I'll give it a try.

So, what is everyone else interested in watching?

Of the ones you mentioned, I'm probably most interested in Yozakura Quartet and Shikabane Hime: Aka. Second one probably just because it's a Gainax, which I'm usually pretty satisfied with (or utterly amazed, as with Gurren Lagann.)

Other than that, wake me up when The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya gets here.

First off, lets start with the 100% will watch guarenteed shows.

Shikabane Hime Aka
Gainax + Zombies = win, nuff said.

Gundam 00 Second Season
Besides it being my obligation as a hardcore mecha fan to watch this, I actually really enjoyed the first season (more so then I've seen others atleast). And after finally beating Super Robot Wars Z the other day, I'd be good to get into a mecha series.

Next up are the ones that look interesting enough and I'll probably check.

Michiko to Hatchin
The previews for this show really gives me a Cowboy Bebop esque feel (maybe its the music? lol) so probably for that reason I'll give it a look at.

KUROZUKA
A friend of mine strongly recommended this to me upon hearing that it had an anime adaptation and the plot sounds good enough as it sounds a lot like Mnemosyne was did, which is never a bad thing, ever.

GA-REI -zero-
I'm pretty new to the Ga-rei universe but the concepts look good enough, it may be a combination of gut and personal interests that make me want to check this series out.

And finally we have the "eh, maybe" section.

Hokuto no Ken Raoh Gaiden
Lately I've been (see still) reading up on some older manga series namely Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure and Hokuto no Ken. While I'm not nearly as familiar with the entire plot of Hokuto no Ken and only god knows how much more I'll be confused with a spin of series of it. I'll probably pick it up if I have extra time left over.

Tales of the Abyss
Even I don't know why I'm doing this.

what I'm interested in:

Clannad: After Story - Loved the first and I've been waiting for the sequel since they announced it at the end of the first season.

Tales of the Abyss - I love the Tales series of games and I loved the Tales of Symphonia OVA even if it was unfinished. I'm just hoping this will live up to my expectations.

EF ~ A Tale of Melodies - Short Ova they I don't know what exactly it's covering but I enjoyed the first series not just for the story but also for the artistic style of animation used. Hope this is somewhat similar.

Vampire Knight Guilty - The second arc of the Vampire Knight story. I was so disappointed when this was split into 2 separate anime seasons with a break between but now I've got what I was waiting for. XD

Chaos;Head - Based on one of my favorite visual novels. It could turn out badly, but if they adapt it well, it could be so damn good... I'm on pins and needles.

Clannad After Story - After the first series, how could I not?

ef - a tale of melodies - The second ef game is in many ways even more emotional and gripping than the first. I expect the anime series to be much the same way. And of course the first season was fantastic, so as is with the case with Clannad and Gundam, I feel pretty relaxed and confident that it's going to be a good watch.

Gundam 00 Season 2 - Gundam 00 started off a bit blandly but built up to a riveting final stretch. I hope the second season keeps that storytelling momentum.

Tales of the Abyss - Superb game, possibly my favorite RPG. It looks like Sunrise is trying to make a proper, thorough adaptation. I'm excited.

There are other series I should be watching (and very much want to watch), but it's going to be a struggle just to keep up with these, and they're all must-see for me.

I really don't think I need to explain that one. :D

But for other titles, Dagger's Chaos;Head spazzing has gotten me interested. I also heard that it's like Higurashi with grownups? I'm sold. And Michiko to Hatchin...for reasons I cannot explain, other than it just looks intriguing. Don't know if I'll follow them to the end, though, like I intend for TotA.

Nothing else for me until the Goku SZS and Higurashi Rei OVAs are released.

...And please tell me I'm not the only one mortified by the prospect of that Lilo and Stitch anime.

You know, I read more about this just now, and it kind of has me interested. I think I shall add it to the partly interested -- never really watched any series similar to it before, so maybe the relative newness will appeal to me.

Question about Tales of the Abyss: I thought about watching it, but I have never played the game and have next to no experience with the series in general (the two episodes of the Tales of Symphonia OVA we watched during Anime Club on Saturday was my first exposure to anything Tales-related). Does that really matter at all, or does anyone think I can go into this fresh and still enjoy it?

I've been. And since we're in the same boat....

I think it'd be equivalent to watching The Lord of The Rings or V for Vendetta; knowledge of the original will enhance your appreciation, but you'd probably be fine just watching.

It has Higurashi-like elements, yes, with a big emphasis on the issue of what's real and what's not. It's also partly a satire of extreme otaku culture. Most of the main cast is high-school age, though.

Considering they're essentially re-telling the original game's story, as opposed to just adding on to the story, I think you'd still enjoy it. Like Alla said, prior knowledge will make it a bit more enjoyable [and those who played and enjoyed the game will probably be the mass majority of watchers], but I think there's still enjoyment to be had for a non-player.

There's a crapload of shows that I'm interested in this season.
100
Must Watch

Clannad ~After Story~
Clannad is my second favorite series from KyoAni so far, after Lucky Star, so I am very much looking forward to seeing where After Story goes. The first one struck a perfect balance between comedy, drama, and romance and I can't wait for more.

ef - a tale of melodies
When I finally got around to watching the first season of ef, it was so good that it felt like it was smacking me upside the head and yelling, "About damn time!" This is one of those series I'm going to be ravenously waiting on for new episodes each week.

Tales of the Abyss
I haven't played the game but I have seen all the previous Tales anime adaptions and liked them. And I love me some good fantasy/adventure anime so I doubt I can go wrong with this one.

Shugo Chara!! Doki
Shugo Chara! has become my second favorite magical girl anime, after Cardcaptor Sakura, so of course I'm looking forward to another year of its moeness.
100
Interested

Chaos;Head
After all the fanspazzing from Dagger I feel almost like I'm a fan without even having played the game or seen the anime yet. I'm not especially into the horror/psychological genres but I have been enjoying Higurashi so we'll see.

Toradora!
The third season of Zero no Tsukaima is ending and I need another fix of Kugimiya Rie's tsundere voice. This is it.

Hyakko
The setup reminds me of Manabi Straight and Hidamari Sketch, which is enough to pique my curiosity. Then you toss Hirano Aya in there and I've no choice but to pick it up.

Kemeko Deluxe!
It sounds kind of like To Love-Ru, which I was having fun with until all the good subs stalled. Only this series has Saito Chiwa in a lead role. Do want.

Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka
The plot summary we've got so far sounds like a pretty generic school romantic comedy setup. But, as Shin put it, the cast is totally stacked.
100
Worth a Look

Kyo no Gononi
Crazy grade school hijinks with a dash of innuendo mixed in? I can't resist...

Yozakura Quartet
The premise doesn't interest me much but it could be amusing.

Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens
Yes, I am going to check this one out just because of its title.

Just watched the first episode of Toradora! -- if it continues at this level (or gets better), then I will definitely be sticking with it for the remainder of the season. It looks pretty good, there were some genuinely funny moments (my favorite being the
censored garbage in Taiga's sink
) and the characters all have good potential right now, especially the leads. Looking forward to more episodes. :)

Something that went under my radar has been Casshern Sins. After I heard it was a remake of some old 1970's title I was originally uninterested and it went from "Apocalyptic wasteland setting? This looks pretty uninteresting why would there be a remake of this..." to "HOLY GOD! He just disemboweled a machine five times his size with his bare hands!" The art was also mindblowingly awesome. For trying to give a series an older feel, Casshern Sins does that and then some.

Just watched the first episode of the Tales of the Abyss anime, after having to go through utter hell waiting for a sub to come out, and even more hell for one that actually WORKED.

In any case, it was totally worth it. Most things are keeping on par with the game so far,
aside from Natalia showing up freakishly early on
. It's absolutely gorgeous to look at, and I hope the rest of the series maintains that.

I'm a bit miffed that the episode ended RIGHT before
Jade's first appearance
, though. Although it's my understanding that episode two was also aired on some channels as a one-hour special, so I shouldn't have too much of a wait.

...I also continue to utterly abhor Luke and want to slam his face into the nearest concrete wall.

Edit: I feel like I should advise downloading TotA from a group called Weib. I figure they just want to get subs out there sooner, which in and of itself isn't too bad, but they do a terrible job. They misspell numerous things, shuffle up translations, and only punctuate the ends of sentences if a question is asked or if it's exclamatory. Ugh. Just awful.

If it's anything like Higurashi I'm sold as well. Actually I can't wait for the third season to start for that anime and I thought for sure it was going to come out in the fall...or so I heard. Was wondering if anyone knew any information on that.

Have you watched the OVA? I was kind of, "Hmm ..." when I first read about it, but I gave it a shot earlier today, and it's hysterical. I mean, I felt sort of dirty while watching it, but it's hilarious. I'll definitely keep up with the series if it's at the same level of funny.

In the past couple of days, I have also watched Hyakko and Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka. The former is solidly funny so far, and I like the lead characters. Good potential there. The latter is OK right now -- I got a few laughs out of it, and I am curious to see where it goes.

I haven't watched the OAV, no. I guess I should hunt it down before starting the series, then.

It looks like Tales of the Abyss is the oversubbed-all-to-hell series of the season. So far there are six different groups subbing it. Both Shinsen's and gg's releases are good, though I don't know enough Japanese to tell which is correct in their few little differences. gg's is 720p while Shinsen's is 576p but there's the same amount of detail in both so I think it's just a station upscale and not true HD. Personally, I'm leaning towards gg because I think their translation flows a little smoother. Osu's release isn't bad but there seem to be a lot of little translation errors that people have pointed out, and they misspell a lot of names. Like Gome said, don't get Weib's release; its framerate is jerky and the timing and editing are horribly sloppy.

I've seen the first episode of Toradora! and it was everything I expected, so I'm happy. Lots of tsundere action and laughs.

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka ep1 was kinda meh but it was fun just to try to match the characters' voices to their voice actresses. I recognized about half of the main cast so far... We'll see if it gets good.

The first episode of Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens was slightly amusing but nothing that great. It basically just introduced the two main characters. Needs moar crazy.

I picked up To Aru Majutsu no Index because Eclipse is subbing it and, well, they're freaking Eclipse. It's not quite what I expected—the tone is much lighter than I figured, with lots of comedic bits, though it looks like the drama will start next episode. It feels a lot like Shakugan no Shana, actually. And it has a loli teacher... I may have to stick with this one.

I was amazed at how many groups actually picked up tales of the Abyss. I spent days looking out for just Osu's subs after ep 2 aired in japan because they were the only confirmed group originally. AT the moment I'm watching Shinsen's subs simply because I'm still annoyed at GG for how freaking huge their file size was for the last ep of Macross Frontier (unless Shinsen stalls like they did on macross) . But both are generally quality subs.

I also checked out Toradora! ans Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka. The latter actually made my laugh a lot more than the former but at the moment I'm going to check out a few more episodes of both before I make a final decision on either.

Clannad After Story is the last one I've checked out so far and it seemed like the first ep was just to reintroduce all the characters. I'm praying for no more random Fuka interruptions during this season because that got on my nerves towards the end of season 1 after her story was over.

I'm still waiting on subs for Vampire Knight Guilty and EF ~ A Tale of melodies.

OK, I watched Kyo no Gononi, and while it definitely is nowhere near as good as the OVA so far, it is solid enough and decently funny. I did not like the first two stories much because the OVA did them much better, but I did enjoy the other two stories, probably because they were not in the OVA. My favorite part is the
air guitaring with brooms
-- it's such a cute little kid moment, and it made me smile. :)

Also watched GA-REI --Zero--, which I hated until the ending, which somehow managed to get me interested in the second episode (
a ghostly ninja chick with a katana killing all the main characters will probably do that
). Still, ep2 will need to be pretty damn good for me to keep up with the series. The monsters struck me as incredibly goofy, and I mostly laughed at the ridiculousness of it all. To be fair, I did enjoy the
motorcycle martial arts
, however.

And I watched Shikabane Hime: Aka, which is exactly what I expected it to be so far. Guns, action and a few funny moments here and there. Probably won't be a classic, but it will be a fun diversion, I think (good thing my expectations weren't sky high going into it, haha).

Oh wow, Mouryou no Hako is really interesting. I don't know too much about it--gothic horror or something, it's based on a novel, the anime has CLAMP character designs, etc. Anyway, the first episode was beautiful and quite weighty in an old-fashioned shoujo sort of way, and it seems like the series might be pretty yuri-centric. The girls and their weird, ambiguous relationship is totally up my alley, probably more so than any other yuri-ish anime since Utena.

I wonder if it's going to get subbed... it'd be a rather difficult translation job.
OMG I just saw a sub of the Lucky Star OVA by 'Dagger and Desbreko'! Was that you guys?! Awesome!!!
Zomg it's DB. Haven't seen you around in a while.

And, yeah, that's us. I was impatient for a decent sub so I got Dagger to translate and we did our own. :catgirl:

Okay, more impressions.

ef - a tale of melodies was as wonderful as I could've hoped. I'm really looking forward to finding out more about Yuu and Yuuko. And Mizuki is just awesome in every way. Like I predicted, I'm ravenously awaiting ep2.

Kemeko-DX (aka Kemeko Deluxe!) was plenty amusing and, also like I figured, similar to To Love-Ru. I'll keep watching as long it keeps up the funny.

I watched Yozakura Quartet ep1 and was not impressed. The looong narration at the start was a turn-off and nothing about the rest of the episode really made up for it. The only character that interested me at all was the cat ears girl, and half of that was just due to the cat ears.

Toradora! is also being subbed by a crapload of different groups now. I've been comparing and it looks like AnimeYoshi's and Mayu-Genjo's releases are the best. (I'm personally leaning towards AnimeYoshi.) I would recommend gg's release except that they apparently added a ton of grain when encoding.

Ep2 of Toradora! has made the series a bit more interesting --
Taiga confessed to Yusaku way earlier than I figured she would. I expected more episodes with Taiga and Ryuji concocting silly plots akin to the whole basketball thing. This choice is intriguing, though; there are any number of directions the series can go in, and these upcoming episodes will be pretty important for Toradora! It can become either really good, or really repetitive.
I am eager to see where the series develops from here. Ryuji and Taiga's relationship has developed so well so far; I like how their friendship is developing naturally, without either really being aware of it. Really cute. :)

Uh, also watched Yozakura Quartet, and the first ep is OK but not great. I do like the premise and think it shows some potential, though, so I am optimistic about where the series is going.

And ep2 of Clannad After Story is a raging pile of awesome. Sunohara is absolutely hysterical. I still love how eager he is to jump right into everything, and his delusions are amazing. (
His imaginary conversation with his "rival," Tomoyo, is fantastic, as is his reaction to Sanae agreeing to be his fake girlfriend, along with their practice date. Sunohara is fulfilling the dream of many an otaku.
) Also, speaking of Sanae ...
zomg she is ridiculously cute in this episode. Dear lord. My prediction for the "Sanae wears a bunch of different costumes" scene: The Des goes wild. :P
Favorite line:
Sunohara saying dating is a "Boys Love game."
I just do not have the words.
