1. I think "classic" denotes a sort of "test of time" that the movie has passed. I'm not exactly sure how long that should be, but a "classic" is something that people can still appreciate years after it was made. A "classic" book usually has some sort of resounding theme that transcends time (usually some aspect of human nature). I think that applies to movies as well. I like the differientation b/t "masterpieces" and "classics". I think it's true. Masterpieces are more a demonstration of incredible artistry. The themes may not be as good, but the effects/cinematography and all the other technical aspects are far above par. They precedents in movie-making. Classic that's not a masterpiece: Princess Bride--we will watch it forever, but there was nothing particularly incredible about how they made it. Masterpiece that's not a classic: Matrix 1 (like Poison Tongue, I think that's the best example). It has the potential (I suppose) to become a classic. (it needs more time) But I don't see it as becoming one. It will always been mentioned in terms of its effects, not it's themes. Classic Masterpiece: the original Star Wars trilogy--it's been mentioned enough before. I also believe there are classics that reside w/in a person's social circle/family. Ex. My friends and I consider "1776" a classic (hilarious musical about the Declaration of Independence). For my family, the big classic is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." (another fantastic comedy!! "Rat Race" doesn't even come close!) Does anyone else consider "A Christmas Story" a classic? I think it is. (I quote it all the time...Then again...I also quote "Good Burger"..."I've always wanted to shave a Martian" *whips out razor* "Got a Martian?") Enough from me! (this is what happens when I got to Starbucks at 10:30...) :twitch:
2. Yeah... I've heard about several movies being out, but not on the musical. It was a book first, so the other movies are based on it. They've had a hard time getting the musical made into a movie b/c it's still so big. There have been a lot of diehard fans against it. However, the chances of me getting to see it performed are Death Valley low to zero. So, I personally, would love them to finally make the movie!! (I remember hearing about the movie possibilities as long ago as 6th or 7th grade...I'm a senior now.) Originally they were going to have Antonio Banderas sing the Phantom, but apparently now their having the guy from the 2nd Tomb Raider movie!?! I hope and pray and that I either heard wrong or that he's a hell of a good singer!! Oh, the song where Christine goes insanely high is the title song. It's awesome. I'd love to sing it for out school variety show, but right now, I'm having trouble hitting G's (and esp. A's!!) above the staff. I would have to sing the end of the song an octave lower. Hmm... *considers possibilities* Oh wait, I'd need a guy cool enough to sing the duet w/ me!! *scratches idea*
3. Manic, I have to agree, your parallels make a lot of sense. (Coming from someone who's read several of the Left Behind books--then got sick of them, owns "The Omega Code"--and loves it, has read "Pierced by a Sword"--several times, and has read only "The Stand" of Stephen Kings novels.) I honestly think they intended religius themes. Why else would Neo wear a cassock? (I tease my priest about his "dress" as much as possible and then told him it was cool now b/c of Neo...) :D As far as the movies go... I could have done w/o the massive orgy scenes in 2 and 3... :twitch: The one in Revolutions looked like a Ramstein music video... :twitch: Anyway, the first movie is definitely my fave. Even if they did ever decide to make more (w/ or w/o Reeves...)--and they won't--I don't think they could ever top the original. 'tis a shame... Oh yeah, when they came out in their mobil suits, I had to shout out in the theater, "IT'S A GUNDAM!!" Man, that cracked me up!
4. *gags* OMG. :twitch: yeah...that was messed up. I'm a little curious about the duo/heero relationship myself. You know, what bothers me the most about anime is that half the time, the guys look like girls. (Duo looks so much like a girl in that picture. The braid doesn't help, and his shirt is puffing out around his chest... *cringes*) Yes, I have to admit, Heero is quite sexy. However, I prefer a guy I could trust to carry on a conversation w/ me. I also seem to like older guys... :nervous: (Ex. In Pirates and LotR I go for Johnny and Viggo rather than Orlando... I'm only 18!!...they're both 40+ :twitch: I think there's something wrong with me... :( )
5. anyone else a "Phantom" fan? I have the soundtrack and dream of actually seeing the musical... I love Micheal Crawford's voice! It's phenomenal!! I've heard they're finally making the movie (they've been talking about it for ages.) ~art~
6. Name: Stacotta Bluesummers Age: 19 Appearance: waist length silver hair, tall and slender, piercing gray eyes, pale skin....wears black tank top and pants w/ black trench coat and boots. Bio: Stacotta was picked up by Knives as a child. She was his servant until Legato came along. When he got on Knives' good side, he gave Stacotta to him. He often controls her (60-70% of the time), but w/ her free will she tries to run away. She's often used as a GHG b/c she has telepathic, telekinetic abilities (she reads minds but doesn't control them) Her uncontrolled personality is fiery and independent. She doesn't want to be on anyone's side but her. However, she's used by Knives and Legato. Weapons: Her tele- abilites, 2 high-quality concealed pistols, and a concealed long-knife What do you guys think?
7. I'm ignoring the next 2 pages of posts to quickly say that the person next to Jesus who looks like a woman (somewhat) is John the Apostle. Mary Magdalene is not pictured. There are 2 stories on her. Some say she was Mary, the sister of Martha and Lasurus. (I'll have to check up on that one...) I do know that she was an adultrous woman at an earlier point in her life. Jesus converted her, and she changed her ways. The idea of her being his wife (or whore) is a load of crap. That completely destroys the person of Jesus as we know him. His followers (the apostles at least) were celibate and were following his lead. I could expand on this, but I'm getting tired. ~art~
8. Epid3mic, I officially love you! I was seriously about to either puke or cry before I read your post. First of all, I was referring to purgatory in a situation assuming Judeo-Christian beliefs (I directed this at them), but the majority of the posts have been from those of other or no religion. For the most part, I think you talked about everything I was concerned about. BTW, anime_guy, you're an educated Catholic, but the points on purgatory you offer are exclusively from CB. That doesn't help...:therock:  If you wanted to cite something it could have been the Bible or the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church). *cries* Regarding Hell, cloricus, you don't realize that people can hurt on a spiritual level. Eternal separation from the loving Almighty Being who created you truly is Hell. I'm sick of people trying to use science to disprove God. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." God is a spiritual reality. Science can never prove or disprove His existence. Anyway, the purpose of "serving time" in purgatory is to cleanse yourself of the temporal effects of your sins. Your sins are forgiven, but you still have to own up to the wrongs you've done. Let's say you break your parents' window. After you say you're sorry and they forgive you, it's not over. You still have to get the window repaired. That's what purgatory does. It repairs all the spiritual windows you've broken. You have to be completely clean to enter Heaven. Someone earilier mentioned that you can't be born or die in grace. No (except for Adam, Eve, Mary, and Jesus) came into this world in the state of grace. We were all born with Original Sin as people have discussed earilier. We are a fallen people and prone to make more mistakes. Baptism wipes away the Original Sin but not it's effects. We're still imperfect as humans. We still sin. Being "in the state of grace" at death means that you haven't committed any mortal sins since the last time you've been to confession. (A mortal sin is a serious sin, committed with knowledge of the seriousness and full consent of the will--meaning, you weren't forced in anyway.) What I don't understand is people not believing in Heaven or Hell (or some sort of afterlife). Isn't it completely depressing to think that this is all there is? wow. Don't you think there must be some place to reward you or punish you for your actions on earth. Yes, that is a more primitive look, but I believe it's natural to humans to believe that. Oh, and apologies for lumping Protestants together, but there's really no other way for Catholics to describe you all. You're mainstream Christians. Almost all of them I've spoken to say that their sect lets them believe whatever they want provided they "accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior"... ("He's my Jesus!!" "No, He's my Jesus!!" "Nuh uh!!" "Yeah huh!!") ~sorry, :D I couldn't resist. :D I guess the reason we group you all together is b/c we're so blatantly set apart. I know of Protestants who don't think we're real Christians. I could voice my opinions on Luther, but we'll save that for another time and another thread... Regarding Catholicism, Karma... (THANK YOU, Epid3mic!!) Let's just say you must have had some really crappy PSR teachers or religion teachers. (there tend to be crappier chruches on the coasts... ug...) Purgatory does have a religious background (Macabees, Paul praying for dead in Timothy, David still punished for sin after forgiven, etc.). Yes, there were some excesses in the Medeival times (the Church is not perfect), but indulgences are not wrong. You can get one by saying a rosary, receiving communion, going to Confession, and praying for the Pope. (yes, all those together...it's not too difficult) The reason for Latin was that, for a time, it was a universal language. It's original purpose was to be understood by all. It just took awhile to get that changed. I know you're not trying to slam the church (or at least that's what you claimed) but the assumptions you made were pretty bad. (again, I apologize if you had crappy teachers. They really frustrate me...) Anyway, I think I'm done. People are gonna look at this, say "it's way too long", and not read any of it... Oh well... ~art~
9. Believe me, Azure_Skies, when I say, I know what it's like to be teased and harassed by people. It's not fun, and I can understand your discomfort. That's was junior high in a nutshell for me... But I let myself cut loose in high school. I got louder and more self-confident. I stopped listening so much to people who don't like me. There are always going to be people like that. Either ignore them, or laugh with them. Make a point of showing off your love for anime as though it's a joke. People should lay off quite a bit when you're laughing too. Don't let them convince you that you're a worthless person. Keep up your confidence and try to move along. If the harassment is still bad, keep approaching teachers, adminstration, counselors, parents, pastors, or any other adult who will listen to you. Someone needs to know. Have you been explaining the abuse to them as well? That could be the turning point. Anyway, I'm going to pray for you if you don't mind. I wish you the best! ~art~ P.S. PM me if you want to keep talking about this privately.
10. Okay, this question is more for those of the Christian faith. All Souls' Day was last Sunday (Nov 2). As a Catholic, I spent particular time on that day praying for "the souls of the faithful departed" or all those who have died and are not yet in purgatory. I know that my Protestant faiths do not believe in purgatory (the place ppl go before Heaven...not limbo...). I was wondering if someone could explain why you don't believe in it and if you pray at all for your loved ones after death. Speaking of which, my B**** sister is about to have my head on a platter... ~art~
11. Ok, cloricus, maybe I missed at some point where you are from, but your avatar hints that you're a disgruntled American citizen. (at least, that's what I've been thinking for some time, but, you know, it's late...) Anyway, our dance was back at the beginning of October. We won our game (yes!!) against one of our major rivals. I was a bit disappointed w/ our Homecoming Royalty... but, there's not much you can do about it... I had fun at the dance, went with a younger guy who was crazy enough to ask me, music coulda been better (mostly rap and R&B which is quite funny considering we have about 5 blacks in our entire school. We crazy caucasians look pretty funny dancing to that music...) Low point of the night: a bunch of lovely drunk jocks decided to start shoving each other around in the middle of the dance. I got hit pretty hard... I was thisclose to punchin' the next guy who ran into me. (which is quite hilarious considering most of them are 3 or 4 times my size...)
12. It seems like definitions a-d are the classically considered "vices"--moral imperfections (aka "sins"). Although, disorders, (ex. chronic self-mutilation, masturbation, etc.) where there are actual psychological problems involved are not really considered sins (by the RCC, at least), rather, problems that need to be fixed. I can also see where the term "vice" can be placed into other situations. So, yeah, I agree the both of you. It's both soceital and moral. 2 vices of my own: Gossip (moral vice) and procrastination (closer to soceital, though, in some ways it could be moral as well -- i.e. not helping someone when you know you should.) Guess that's all for now. I should probably sleep... :sleepy: ~art~
13. No hard feelings, Molleta! I don't really mind. Semjaza Azazel, officially the Church does condemn pre-marital sex. You just don't see it enforced very often, b/c, well, it's a bit difficult to do that. But, as I mentioned much earlier to Molleta, if you were to decide to marry, the priest is not supposed to let you if you're living together. Normally, you're required to live apart for some time before the wedding. anyway, I already promised myself I'd go to sleep!! :sleepy: For the second time: Good night!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
14. I've heard of lots of good results from this diets, but I have two major reasons for not using it myself (besides the lack of discipline...) 1. I've heard too many stories of bad side effects. I'm afraid it might be dangerous. 2. I consider breads a major food group. You'd honestly think I'm Italian or something based on my absolute craving of carbs. I could give up superficial sugars and fats for biscuits, pasta, and homemade wheat bread.. mmmm.... I won't tell ppl not to do it, b/c it may work for you. However, I'm not going for it myself...
15. I wish I played the violin... :( I played the clarinet until I got braces. I've played piano since 1st grade (current senior in high school). I'm actually pretty bad considering how long I've taken lessons, but I do it for the joy of it. I may not be as good as I should be, but I love it, and it tends to be a stress reliever. (I'm also stepping into the realm of composition... :wigout: )
16. Wow... I didn't realize this would turn into a discussion of "What's wrong w/ Syk3's 13 yr old brother. lol I don't think there's anything wrong w/ him at all. He may simply be shy about the topic. Anyway, if anyone else has other amusing anecdotes about little kids (not necessarily flirt related) please share! Little kids crack me up! Here's an example: It's a frenzied morning trying to get 9 kids ready for school (the youngest doesn't go yet). Mom asks, "Eric, do you have your shoes?" Eric: "No, but I'd really like a frog for a pet!" And I thought I was random... We could probably write an entire book of "Ericisms" in this house...
17.
Originally posted by Molleta: For all you taking about contraceptives and birth control, I'm going to beat Artimis to telling you, the Catholic Church does not condone them. In fact it expressly forbids their use. *scary* Do not execute me as the messenger, I'm just telling you, if the path someone has taken is towards those teachings, them your comments will be falling on deaf ears.

Origninaklly posted by outlawstar69: *Reads Molletta's post* Hmm.. are there any catholic scholars here who would care to elaborate on this? I'm not catholic, and haven't heard about it much. Is there any religious line of reasoning behind it?
Thanks Molleta! Bring up the topic and make me explain it! :bellylol: Alright, according to the RCC (Roman Catholic Church), sex is for "babies and bonding" or "procreation and intimacy". Pleasure is an added benefit, and, I suppose by God's plan, an incentive. I mean, can you imagine that there'd be very many of us if pleasure wasn't in there? :nervous: Anyway, for sex to be in the "done properly" (for lack of better phrasing at 1 in the morning...) it must fulfill the above listed conditions. Ergo, if you're not open to life while you're committing the act, there's a problem. NFP, by the way, is not simply "Catholic contraception/birth control". For starters, it is open to life. It simply spaces children better by watching the woman's cycle. Secondly, it won't work without communication b/t the potential parents. This keeps them close and enables them to talk more about other issues as well. --If that wasn't enough on that topic, I'll pick up Humane Vitae sometime when I'm not so tired... People commented about Catholics having pre-marital sex. Being Catholic is not being perfect. Additionally, it's so easy to be lumped into the Church (get baptized at birth, or any point in life) that a ton of ppl disregard most of or all of the Church's teachings. Ever wonder why I always say I'm a "conservative Catholic"? That's to denote that I actually believe in, agree with (or submit to), and follow all the Church's teachings. (Not to say I'm perfect. I fall, too, but I try to be good... ) Ok, last thing for tonight... :sleepy: People have been mentioning a lot about my "eternal bonding" comment. If you'll notice, I said "whether you notice it or not". Don't tell me it isn't there b/c you didn't experience it. *slaps forehead* In many cases, you won't notice it. This is another thing stemming from my ever-present religious background. You have an eternal spiritual connection w/ an person you commit the act with. (I ended a sentence w/ a preposition, and I don't care!) Wow...it's been a long day... Anyway, yeah, it sounds weird, and a lot of ppl will disagree w/ me, but that was my reasoning behing it. (It's a spiritual connection in that your souls are connected. You've given a little piece of yourself to that person.) And, the reason I didn't elaborate from the start on my first reason is b/c I knew it wasn't worth it. Too many ppl believe too many different things. It would have been a waste of time. anyway... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... *drools on keyboard* Good night! ~artemis~ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
18. I'm in my fourth year of Spanish. I enjoy it a lot. It's an awesome language (more romantic, I think, than French which sounds like the guy is about to sneeze on you...) I actually started Spanish freshman year b/c my school didn't offer Latin (which I took in 8th grade). I would love to take up Latin again. It ends up being very helpful (most English words have Latin roots). German was my second choice if I didn't get into Spanish. There are so few German kids at our school that they end up very close-knit. Actually, we have our foreign language banquet coming up on the 11th. German is sponsoring it this year (german chocolate cake!!). We have competitions b/t the students of each language. We've won twice in a row. (the funny thing is, the german kids take it so seriously that they spend time in class practicing for the three-legged race and knock-out...)
19. Sorry, to clarify the marriage thing, I'm assuming, "til death do us part." (conservative Catholic here) I'm not trying to condemn people for having sexual relations. The purpose of marriage, in this sense, is to publicly announce your bond w/ that person for life. Sex creates such a strong bond that, whether you realize it or not, will last forever. I would like the reassurance of marriage that the man I love has vowed to stay with me before I engage in an activity that will bond us so closely. However, I can see where a lot of people don't hold the same ideals. I guess I feel, again, that people should be aware of the bond they're creating when they engage in the activity.
20. I just found it incredibly funny and thought I'd share. I was looking for more amusing stories. I'm not actually worried about them. They're good kids. I don't think they'll grow up to be players...*cough*cough*HellsFire*cough* ;)
21. I can't believe the kinds of things I have to discuss w/ you, Tony. Duh!! movie hopping is wrong! you only paid for one movie. If you're worried about not gettin' your money's worth...don't go. It's as simple as that. Seriously... ~art~
22.
Originally posted by sweetreyes Outside Comment: ARTEMIS HAS STRONGBAD AS THE AVATAR...:wigout: *voice of strongbad* scroll button, scroll button ,one, two, one , two. Well you can kick it with so I can scroll with you!! LMAO! Sorry I just love that site.... ... P.S. Can anyone guess which Matrix star also had appearances in Pee-Wee's Playhouse!!!
Isn't StrongBad awesome? Actually I haven't been there in awhile. Anyway, I'm dying to know the answer to your question, sweetreyes. I used to watch Pee-Wee until Mom decided there was something wrong w/ him.  I also watched Mighty Mouse, Garfield and Friends, the Turtles, and others. I remember seeing a "Lady Lovely Locks" movie in kindergarten or first grade. ('90, '91) I can't remember if it was a series or not. Oh yeah! Does anyone else remember Inspector Gadget? the original cartoons, I mean. (not Rupert Everet as Claw...although he's great!!) ~art~ P.S. This is my 100th post! *celebrates* Oh wait, no else is up at this ungodly hour... Oh well. Happy Halloween! :D
23. I've noticed that w/ anime DVDs, too. I rented the Trigun DVDs from the library. They had a few screencaps and some artwork, but that was about it. The Gundam Wing ones have a few character analyses (sp?) but not much else. Spirited Away had quite a bit more. They had bits on how the movie was made, the dubbing, etc. I have to agree w/ Amibasuki. People are willing to pay too much for those DVDs *cough*cough*duorocks*cough* ;) When ppl stop, quality will increase and price will decrease. ~art~
24. I finally saw this not too long ago. I'd noticed it on movie rental shelves before and just passed it by. It looked kinda stupid to me. Then durocks had me watch it with her. It had some weird parts, but it was actually really good. I'd be up to seein' it again so I could analyze it better. The animation itself, like everyone else says, is incredible. I also appreciated the story line. It was pretty neat how it all worked out. ~art~
25. I'm kinda boring: born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. I've moved twice in my life: first, across town (I was less than a year old) second, about three or four blocks (I was about to turn 8.) I live in a boring old neighborhood. Mostly retired people, not many kids. However, they're beginning to die off... we're slowly getting younger families here... :D (I'm not really this crass. I love old people! They rock!) ~art~
