1. Currently I'm basking in the awesomeness of Calabrese. They're a horror rock group that's obviously heavily influenced by the Misfits. This means all their songs have a dark punk tone with lyrics all about horror. Isn't that great!? They use samples from old horror movies in almost all of their songs. Right now I'm loving "Zombie I" for the hella catchy chorus, and "Resurrection" for the incredible ghoulish harmony near the end. All of it is so so good, though.
2. Right now I'm listening to the Wicked soundtrack, and thusly crying my eyes out. It well may be That we will never meet again In this lifetime So let me say before we part So much of me Is made of what I learned from you You'll be with me Like a handprint on my heart And now whatever way our stories end I know you have re-written mine By being my friend... Like a ship blown from its mooring By a wind off the sea Like a seed dropped by a skybird In a distant wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better? But because I knew you I have been changed for good If I were a senior right now, I don't even know.
3. A while ago I got Society of S by Susan Hubbard, and my current opinion is that of dislike. The characters were annoying and unbelievable, especially the narrator (one of those super intelligent, home-schooled, sheltered, child prodigy types). I love vampires, but not when they're done like this. What a shame. After that I read Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, which was very good. I'd already seen the movie so I knew what was coming. My friend is supposed to bring me Lullaby tomorrow, but as it stands Invisible Monsters is still my favorite Chuck P. book.

6.
I also don't ever end my thread titles with prepositions. Ever.
I noticed that too, haha. I have to wake up around 5:50 AM on school days, because I have to leave my house for the bus stop by 6:25. I like to get a decent amount of sleep every night so I don't wake up in a bad mood, so this means I should get to bed around 9-ish. I like getting nine hours a night, so sometimes I'll try to get to sleep between 8 and 9. This hardly ever happens, though, because there are too many distractions. On the weekend nights, however, I don't have a schedule. I fall asleep if I'm tired/bored enough, as long as it's at least nine. Sometimes I can stay up til' 3 AM before crashing, and others I don't bother sleeping all night. A few weeks ago I was constantly awake for almost two days. I just wasn't tired at all, and I hadn't had ANY caffeine the entire time, nor for several weeks prior. I could have stayed up longer, but I had places to be the following morning. Boo.
7.
Clarity, that's right. Thank you that was bothering me. :p
Unfortunately, it must have been deactivated from lack of use. I went to it just the other day and it was gone. :[
8. HUNTER THAT WAS ADORABLE! Not to mention quite enjoyable. Nice work, haha, even if I can't hear some of the quieter parts very well. This reminds me that we shouldn't have let the OB band thread die. If I remember correctly it was my turn to do something with the song and I never did, and now I have a new computer and no microphone. Awman.
9. I'm going to try to do this as best as I can remember. Stardust I didn't catch the beginning of this, but what I did see was nice. I like Claire Danes, if only because we share first names. I don't really remember exactly how I felt about it at the time, though. Hocus Pocus Which, of course, I've seen thousands of times before. But I remember watching it this year so I'm mentioning it, haha. The Game Plan This played during a flight from Colorado to North Carolina, and out of pure boredom I watched it. It did not even come near my list of favorite movies; I just can't seem to enjoy anything Disney has been putting out recently. Bewitched Seen it before. When I had Dish Network, my receiver would frequently spaz out and refuse to turn on. Since I can't sleep without a TV on, I had to watch a DVD to calm myself. This is the only one I own that I can watch/listen to comfortably at night. It's also the only Will Ferrell movie I can stand. I Am Legend It was pretty cool. Will Smith is an incredible actor. And of course, I absolutely bawled when
he had to kill his dog. I thought I'd be okay with it until he started singing "Three Little Birds," and I lost it.
I get really emotional when I watch sad movies, lolz. Beetlejuice Another that I've seen before, but I absolutely adore it. I have some kind of girl-crush on Winona Ryder, ESPECIALLY as Lydia Deetz. The other characters are wonderful as well. This whole movie is made of amazing and win, and the soundtrack is just spectacular. Harry Belafonte's "Jump in De Line" has been my myspace profile song for about a month now. Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola) I just read Dracula for my AP Lang class and adored it. That was the first reason I wanted to see this movie. The second and third were that WINONA RYDER plays MINA HARKER, who is basically my most favorite female literary character ever. For no reason, honestly. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Seen before. I watched it again because Dracula put me in the mood to watch it. I think the super bad-*** Mina Harker of this movie is what makes me love her character so much. Live Freaky! Die Freaky! I just saw this today, and it was weeeeeeird. Lots of claymation sex and rock star voiceovers. I really only wanted to see it because Davey Havok had a part in it (as a gay hairdresser), which put a smile on my face. It's not going to be thought of as a favorite, though. Donnie Darko This might be my new favorite movie. I loved the psychological aspect to it, which greatly reminded me of The Chumscrubber. Three of my favorite songs were used, as well: Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," Gary Jules' "Mad World" cover, and my top favorite song of all time, The Church's "Under the Milky Way." The film's soundtrack was quite awesome as well, and now I feel inspired to write music in a similar fashion.
10. THE MOST UNWANTED SONG. This is a song written specifically so that less than 200 people in the world would enjoy it. I must be one of those people, because this is absolutely too ridiculous to not like. I am in hysterics over here. It's twenty five minutes long, but as soon as it's over I'm going to check out the "Most Wanted Song" and see which one I prefer. EDIT - I couldn't stand more than three seconds of the Most Wanted. It reminded me of sitting in the allergist's office listening to their hella annoying jazz.
11. The Dear and Departed. This band opened for AFI when I went to see them last year, so at the time I really couldn't get into them (out of sheer excitement and unbearable anticipation). Now, though, I'm really liking what I'm hearing. I need to get their album! They covered "Under the Milky Way," which is pretty much my most favorite song of all time. It's sweet.
12. I wanted to end up with a really long list, but then I thought what's the point? I had about twenty or so bands listed of who I only know a few songs, and even if I adore those songs I can't really consider a band a "favorite" just based on that. So I shortened it a lot. 1. AFI 2. The Academy Is 3. Circa Survive 4. Nightwish 5. Blaqk Audio 6. Kiss Kiss 7. Rasputina 8. Trans-Siberian Orchestra 9. Smashing Pumpkins 10. Son of Sam 11. Placebo 12. Misfits 13. Siouxsie and the Banshees 14. London After Midnight 15. Thursday 16. Regina Spektor 17. Son of Sam 18. Strung Out 19. Blood Brothers 20. As I Lay Dying 21. Norma Jean 22. Descendants 23. Mindless Self Indulgence 24. Joy Division 25. The Adicts 26. Bauhaus 27. Explosions in the Sky 28. Walking Talking Stephen Hawking 29. Crepusculum 30. The Medic Droid 31. Sick of it All 32. Saosin 33. The Mars Volta 34. The Sound of Animals Fighting 35. The Unseen 36. Green Day
13. I live on the west coast of FL, and despite the Gulf of Mexico being RIGHT THERE we haven't had any terrible storms in a long time. I've only experienced a few hurricanes in my lifetime, and they were on the verge of weakening into tropical storms right before they made landfall anyway. The scariest thing I can remember is waiting for Hurricane Charley to hit. Prior to that I had never experienced a hurricane in my life, and this one was a Category 4 (out of a maximum five levels). My parents waited until the morning of to get any supplies, and it was really tense all over the place. Both emotionally and atmospherically. Fortunately for us, the storm turned at the last second and brushed right past my area. It totally ravaged parts of southern FL, though. Then you had Frances, Ivan, and Jean come through right after that, so some places that got hit the hardest still haven't recovered. In fact, Katrina hit down there too, though it was nowhere near as powerful as it was when it hit New Orleans. Meteorologists always say my city is long overdue for a horrific storm, though, given its close proximity to the gulf. That's a scary though.
14. Bauhaus; "Ziggy Stardust" I feel like it's a sin that I prefer this version to David Bowie's original, but what can I do? It's just a little more energetic, I think. I don't really like the way Bowie sang it, at least compared to Peter Murphy.
15. Sleep Cult; "Paralysis" This is an electronica project I just had the idea for today. I wrote two songs in GarageBand on my friend's Mac. If I had a chance to write more, they'd be part of a sort of concept album based on an idea for a story I had. This song is supposed to represent the feeling of sleep paralysis and express the fear someone experiencing it has, if they have no idea what's going on. If anyone wants to give it a listen, here's the myspace: www.myspace.com/sleepcult There are only two tracks right now, but next time I can borrow my friend's Mac I hope I'll be able to write more. The reason they're both so short is that the events they represent usually happen over a very brief period of time (and not at all because I couldn't think of how to continue them, I swear :animeswea)
16.
Details, details!! >_< When, where, what venue; you know, for us lazy people who don't check their site. :(
The one I plan on going to happens September 21 at Jannus Landing in St. Petersburg, FL. I don't think they're planning on going to places where any of the OB-sessors are, though...here's the website, so check for yourself: http://nightwish.com/en/live I'm listening to "Amaranth" by Nightwish now. It grew on me really really fast, haha. I'll have to try to get Dark Passion Play sometime.
17.
And you're not telling us about it? Not fair, Clurr. Not fair.
Not telling you about what? D: I would be ten times as excited if Tarja was still in the band, but if that was the case then they would probably not even be coming near the US. Or they would just cancel the concert. They were supposed to play down here when I was obsessed with then in the eighth grade. My friend bought a ticket but the show ended up being cancelled. Booo.
18. I'm listening to "Astral Romance" by Nightwish. Right now I'm burning with excitement because I just found out that they're coming to my MOST FAVORITE venue ever this September. Oh. my. christ. I'm going and no one can stop me.
19. I've got a video of Nightwish performing "Dark Chest of Wonders" live with Anette. I'm trying, I really am, but it just makes me sad. She is an amazing singer of her own right, but if she had always been their singer I probably wouldn't have ever loved them as much as I did. Sfiehgtrnhnryjpynj!! Well, anyway, off that subject for once. AFI; "Porphyria" I really shouldn't have to explain myself. It starts with rising guitar chords, which drops out and Davey screams "I KNOW IT'S" before the whole band crashes in, "here we retreat, for where else can we go?" etc. etc. There's a video of them playing this and in that break right before the verse, both Hunter and Jade (bassist and guitarist) spin and jump and land in perfect sync, emphasizing the band's entrance. It's so cool.
20. Heliumvola; "Veni Veni": My friend got me into them back when we were all gothy in the eighth grade. Even then I only liked a few songs off their Liod album, and this one was my favorite. They're like electronica with really simple instrumentation and lyrics in mostly German, but this song is in Latin. My other favorite of theirs, "Printemps," is in French. I might have to listen to it again, because it reminds me of riding the bus home from school. Strangely, that's a pleasant feeling, even though the bus ride was never anywhere near enjoyable. Voltaire; "Brains!": Another remnant of my gothy days! Voltaire is so good, though; the songs I have are very gypsy-esque with acoustic guitar, cello, violin, and drums. Some may recognize this song from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
21. I guess I could understand the thing about Nemo, as it was their first single (that actually got played on MTV), but Planet Hell? I was totally rocking out to that song earlier, haha. Yeah. Last I heard they were Finland's most popular band or something. Or at least that's how it seemed. I haven't done the research or anything.
Given the two you picked, I'm not really surprised. Nemo isn't exactly the most exciting track they have, and Planet Hell is best heard whilst imagining a massive homage to every Gundam space battle ever fought. You really need to hear Dark Chest of Wonders, I Wish I Had an Angel, Ghost Love Score, and . . . Clurr, help me with the good ones from Century Child and Over The Hills? :animeswea
ESPECIALLY Ghost Love Score. I know someone who doesn't like this type of music at all, and thinks he wouldn't like Nightwish anyway, but really really loves Ghost Love Score. It's so insanely epic. Allamorph; that's really hard. Century Child is my favorite Nightwish album everrrr. I know you've already heard Phantom of the Opera and End of All Hope....definitely check out "Bless the Child"--it's somewhat similar to Ghost Love Score, as is "Beauty of the Beast." Dead to the World has some bitchin' synth lines. "Slaying the Dreamer" is the only song that ever honestly compelled me to headbang like it was going out of style, but I don't know how you feel about that. As for Over the Hills, I'd primarily suggest the title track (which is a cover), "Astral Romance" (a remake), and the live performances of "Beauty and the Beast." Oh, their live cover of "Walking in the Air" is quite good as well.
22.
So all this talk of Nightwish made me wanna hear them. Overall they are pretty disappointing for me. Their sort of classical metal mix seems really boring to me. very dull. I also really don't like this singer. She is just very bland. Her voice reminds me of like...an old school opera singer or something. *starts listening to seether some more*
SHAMEFUL! What song did you listen to that seems boring?
23. Now I'm listening to Nightwish; "The Siren," and loving Tarja's voice even more than I ever did. If that's possible. I don't think it's all the talk in here about them that's brought me back, really. This was just perfect timing.
24. Allamorph, I'm sure there are videos of Nightwish's recent performances on YouTube. I saw one of Anette singing "Ever Dream" (which made me sad, to be honest :[ ). They'd be concert performances, of course, but some videos have decent quality. Right now I'm listening to "Beauty of the Beast" by Nightwish. Which is not the same song as "Beauty AND the Beast." Anyway. My mind keeps drawing parallels from Nightwish to Dracula, even though there really aren't any at all. At least not to the book... to the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula, there are countless. Haha. That's the only reason I've been listening to so much Nightwish lately. It makes me think of Mina Harker, and that makes me so happy. Nightwish; "Astral Romance" I've got the original version playing now, but I MUCH prefer the remake on Over the Hills and Far Away. My favorite part: after Tarja's verses she has this lovely vocal solo, which soon explodes into a whole choir of 50 other Tarjas. I love. Haha, since this version is different from the one I've listened to the most (the lyrics are different, on top of the instrumentation and quality) so I'm thinking "what ARE you singing right now?"
25. All this Nightwish talk is making me smile so much, xD. They were my favorite band when I was in the eighth grade, back when Once had just come out. The reason I prefer Tarja to Anette is partially that I was seriously obsessed with the band then, as it was. The change came when I really didn't care too much anymore, but I still felt like it was all wrong when I heard the new singer. To me, Nightwish needs those amazing operatic vocals. Like I said, it's just not the same. Right now I'm listening to their live performance of "Beauty and the Beast," which is probably my favorite song of theirs. I would really recommend the live version to the studio, because this one just sounds so much nicer. The male vocals here are done by Tony Kakko, who is great, and near the end of the song Tarja has this beautiful vocal solo.
