1. methinks it's really not worth arguing over.. but just to keep the skeptics happy, I did a kind of unofficial count.. as I said, it's unofficial.. but heh.. even if it's slightly unaccurate the end result will end up the same.. cos as you can see Mitch won by quite a bit.. Mitch: 20 Heaven's Cloud: 4 Raiha: 4 there ;p
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel Well... If you change his name, it's no longer Tidus.
Until I actually got the game and realised they never spoke his name, I thought maybe that you put a file name in (ie. your name) and all the character names were set, i.e. Tidus is always called Tidus.. but obviously that wasn't the case..
Originally posted by Celia Their previous lifetime is what brought them to this point.
I mean no offence when I say this, but I see that as the same kind of attitude as the stereotypical religious "Your bad circumstances are a result of your sins" attitude.. which I don't really agree with at all, cos it kind of says "there are no circumstances that you couldn't avoid, had you been a better person" but still, as I said, I meant no offence, and didn't mean to put your beliefs down.. that's just my personal opinion
 5.
Originally posted by Sara 1. Your best friend has discovered that you have never seen (or didn't like) his/her favorite movie. After a playful fight, he or she agrees to drop the subject if you just say you like it.. It's all in fun, no big moral dilemma. Do you end the fight or let them tackle you again?
I wouldn'y end it.. not on moral grounds, cos like you said it's all in fun, but out of determination to get them to say they didn't like it, or drop the subject ;)
Originally posted by Sara 2. Your date [or friend] shows you her dress for the school dance. She likes it, although she can tell you don't. She asks you to tell her you like it. You both know you'd be lying. Does it really matter?
Yes. It matters, because you both know you'd be lying if you said you liked it. It's better to get the truth out than let it eat at both of you when you know what you said was a lie.
Originally posted by Sara 3. Your best friend has been quiet all day, and won't tell you what's wrong. Later that night, she tells you that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. She wants to hear you say everything will be alright. What do you tell her? "It's okay, everything is going to be okay," or "I'm sorry, you know I can't do that. I'm here for you, though, alright?" You're not really gaining anything in any of these situations, and you're not trying to get anyone in or out of trouble.
I don't see how it's lying.. I would say everything will be OK.. but I wouldn't really see it as a lie.. cos even if their mother dies of cancer, there's always something to be happy about.. and I really believe that death isn't the end, so to be perfectly honest I don't see "everything will be OK" as a lie at all.. I mean, I know damn well that it won't be OK in the short term, and that their mother may die, and I would say that too, but in the long term everything would be OK. (And I know people who have experience in this particular matter.. so just trust me on that.. if everything is said that is needed to be said, and everything is done that is needed to be done, before they die, it's not as painful as if you spend the time worrying about it. In other words, if you have a positive attitude, everything does end up OK)

 7.
Originally posted by Harry child-abusing Christians
...it's guy like you that make the "do not kill" commandment a little more difficult to follow. Ever heard of the word "generalisation"? As for the rest of your post.. I'm not even going to bother..
 8.
Originally posted by sage I admit that this kind of bashing is really silly and is leading nowhere, but... Deus Ex craved for this! :naughty:
Indeed I did...
Originally posted by sage I think I know who you're referring to (though I can't remember the name), but there is also hundreds of books which HAVE succeeded to critizise religion in a very believable way (Copernicus, Darwin, Marx...)
Copernicus proved that the Earth is not the centre of the universe.. this was very against the churches beliefs but hey.. people get things wrong.. The church was just stubborn.. but no-where in the bible does it clearly say that the earth is the centre.. people justeither misinterpreted parts or assumed that. Darwin put forward the theory of evolution... so what?.. I study biochemistry, which evolution is a major part of, and I'm still a christian. I'm not familiar with Marx so I won't comment on that part. Ultimately, I'm not talking about criticising religion, which makes up it's own ideas, I'm talking about science and the bible, which is a different thing entirely.
Originally posted by sage Well, this is similar to the fact that if you have enough life-will (or hope), you'll have more chances on recovery. Nobody's denying that. But wether you do it by praying or just struggling, I think the results are the same (depending on the seriousness of the disease, of course).
This was a scientific study.. the people being prayed for had no idea that they were being prayed for.. so that's that idea out the window.
Originally posted by sage Yeah right! A man who wrote about five years in another man's life is one of the greatest historians in the world. As if! Yes, it has been prooved that there was a Jesus who lived in Israel (or Palestine), but that's because he's mentioned by other historians besides the ones in Bible. But this only proves the obvious: that the Bible is based on true events in some level.
I was talking about the acts of the apostles.. that was after Jesus' death.. get your facts straight.
Originally posted by sage I don't even understand this point entirely, but if you're trying to prove that the miracles in Old Testament have been proven right in science, then somebody has fooled you HARD. The stuff in OT is MYTHICAL, and even most of the theologists consider that the events are only symbolical.
The story is around on the internet somewhere.. I have the actual adress in a book at home (I'm not at home) so I'll post it up tomorrow.
Originally posted by sage How can you tell he wasn't faking it? You can't! Lot of those "healing sessions" are based solely on the charismatic leader of the sect, who is making his followers to believe everything he says.
..... I know he wasn't faking it because it was a medical condition.. he was due to have an operation on it. and I know he was healed because he went to see his doctor and had scans done. That and he can run, lol. And it wasn't some charismatic leader.. there were a lod of people praying for people.. did I mention I actually know this guy, it wasn't just "some guy I saw"..
Originally posted by sage I repeat: they must have had a serious problem in what they believe in. If they were true non-believers, they would've stuck to it. I'm not saying that they made the wrong decision, but I'm just analyzing what made them do that decision.
You weren't even there.. You can't possibly analyse what made them make that decision, because obsiously you've never experienced what made them make that decision..
Originally posted by sage Well... a sign, a coincidence... this can be translated into whatever form, depending on the point of view.
that I agree with
Originally posted by sage Well, I've heard about a whole city that was sunken into ocean by the wrath of gods, and all of it's people were turned into mermen, legs turning into fins... So there.
Heh.. have anyone you know ever been to that city and then been to your church? I mean, yeah, I can't prove that either, but give me some credit, I'm not as dumb as you seem to think.
Originally posted by sage I'm just saying that you can fiddle with words as much as you like, and still you can't find the ultimate truth behind them - there's always somebody who looks at them in a whole new way.
"Well, I've heard about a whole city that was sunken into ocean by the wrath of gods, and all of it's people were turned into mermen, legs turning into fins... 9.
Originally posted by sage Deus Ex, you must realize that the things you've listed are just opinions, a way to see what happened, you can't expect us atheists or members of other religions to instantly buy what you said... The opinion part is whether or not you conclude that God was behind it.. but the statements themselves are fact.

Sirach 4:21 Humility deserves honour and respect, but a low opinion of yourself leads to sin (Sin not necessarily meaning "doing naughty stuff" but "being led away from God", as in the more literal Jewish interpretation) (note: Sirach is one of the "Deuterocanonical books" and is not in the majority of Bibles)
 11. heh... Piro, I should have taken pictures at the Youth weekend a week ago.. we had a full band for the worship (ie, electric guitar, bass, rythm guitar, keyboard and drums), rather than the country-ish or gospel stereotypes of christian music, and the electric guitarist looked like a full-on goth.. and these were the people leading the worship ;). Off the top of my head, I can recall that: a) Someone has tried to disprove the Bible using science, properly, to write a book about it, but ended up writing a book about God and science. b) The effects of prayer have been scientifically studied (again, trying to disprove it) and prayer was found to double the chances of recovery for patients. (I'll give details when I look again- these are off the top of my head) c) Someone attempted to disprove the validity of the Acts of the Apostles, by Luke (one of the major new testament books), by actually visiting parts of Asia minor where the Apostles were, and instead he concluded that Luke was "not only accurate but one of the greatest of historians" d) Some astronomical data didn't make anysense until they accounted for the fact that God apparently held time still or reversed it, twice, in the old testament Those are out there somewhere, but may need a bit of searching to find. There are also things I've either seen or heard of second hand (not from the bible) 1- I've seen a guy with a painful knee problem healed instantly 2- I've seen 7 non-believers form a faith -not a religion, a faith in Jesus in one night (they were the only non-believers there), one of which viewed religion in the same way as you 3- When I prayed about whether I should quit uni or not, the answer came the next day in this form: My mum bought a CD that wouldn't play in church the night before, to hear the second track. The third track was called "the scientist" (I study science). The music for "the scientist" was an identical chord pattern, and in the same key, as one of my songs (not a widely used chord pattern like some). In the back of the CD booklet it said "The scientist is Dan (my name is Dan). I see no chance for coincedences there. (it was also a Coldplay CD, who are a Christian group). 4- I've heard of a devout Christian village in Africa where they actually believe that the Devil sometimes takes people away from life early, and they pray for them to be brought back to life... and it actually happens. Oh and, with response to the whole "prove it" thing, my response would be that it's not for me to prove it to you.. I could pray for some kind of miracle, and it may even happen. But even with proof, you wouldn't have a faith. And ultimately, faith is what it's all about. Lots of people base their faith on miracles and "proof of God" but ultimately they have no faith and will never be able to rely on God when things get bad. So no.. I won't prove it, because proof doesn't bring strength in faith.
 12.
Originally posted by Lalaith Ril You know Duo they're gonna say that its us that ourselves that way. They'll say the devil created sin and we gave in to it. God didn't create it.
And who exactly do you think created the Devil?.. The Devil was once an Angel (or so I gather) but fell into Darkness.. I can gather that from the few references to Him in the Bible, without needing the actual story behind it (though I've briefly skimmed a few online Deuterocanonical texts, which may or may not be accurate) The thing is, what makes good "good" if there is no "bad" to oppose it.. Sin has always been around.. the Devil just makes it look more tempting.

(look at what it says under the last attachment) http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=319539 but yeah.. A while ago I noticed that practically every time I went to the "who's online" thingy, someone was looking an attachment at this thread.. and it just happened again.. and now the attachment has a total of 5415 views.. so I was kind of wondering.. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?? heh.. actually I wasn't seriously thinking that it just kind of seemed weird when I first noticed.. 16.
Originally posted by James What I mean by comprehend is that it's difficult to actually get your mind around the idea of an atom. If you say to someone "you can fit one million atoms on a pin head", it's very hard for a human brain to actually comprehend the size of that matter in their mind. Know what I mean?
Agreed.. it probably just doesn't seem as hard for me cos I don't hear the pinhead analogy that often.. it's the thing with doing biochemistry as well as physics.. to me an atom is not a great deal smaller than a small-ish molecule, which gets absorbed by a bigger protein molecule, which binds to some small organelle, which passes though some membrane, which is a part of a cell.. or something like that.. it's the fact that there's so many levels down, it doesn't seem such a big jump when you get told about them all.. though now that I think about it, an atom is like, a billionth of of a centimeter in diameter.. and a nucleon (proton or neutron) is about a millionth of that.. which is pretty small..
Originally posted by James "how long is a piece of string?"
10 inches, give or take..
it's all down to how much you're willing to give or take
17.
Originally posted by James I don't think a human being can comprehend the size of the Universe. Just the same as we can't comprehend the size of an atom (or sub-atomic levels).
We can comprehend the size of an atom just fine, it's just the weird crap that goes on down there that makes it so incomprehensible.. that's why there's a whole different set of physical laws (quantum physics) for things of that order of size. With Regards to the original post: You can't know beyond any reasonable doubt that what you are saying is true, because you're working on the assumption of "disregarding anything we can't comprehend as not being there" which is a pretty dumb thing to do, when you're trying to prove something absolutely. also, "Infinite Space + Infinite Time = Infinite Matter" where on earth did you get THAT from?... Space is a dimension Time is a dimension, which is relates to space as "ct + x + y + z", where "c" is speed of light, "t" is time, and "x, y, z" are spacial dimensions. Essentially, that means Time is exactly the same kind of thing as space. Matter is not realted to time OR space. You could have a single atom in an infinite universe, just sitting there on it's own. What you're assuming is that an infinite universe must have a roughly equal density of matter throughout, rather than being concentrated into a finite space. So there's another wrong assumption. and, as DeathKnight pointed out, you can't have a centre without defined edges, because the whole nature of an objects centre is to be a kind of mean point with regards to an objects surface (ie being the average point of the object's location).
 18. That's one of the higher end of all the decent arty things I've seen browsing the forum. I love the pear logo too.. heh
 19. I think Harry may be on to something.. if education was as scarce, and affordable to as few as it is in some 3rd world countries, people may actually appreciate it more and actually do work. But seriously.. you guys get a free education system, you're one of the priveliged minority that do, and every place in that priveliged minority finds that a lot of kids just can't be arsed with it. How stupid is that? (No offense meant towards anyone.. just an observation)
 20. Fame? heh.. give me happiness any day. There are people with less money, food, job oppurtunities, and a shorter life expectancy than the lower end of the UK, in places in Africa, but they also have less worries. They don't care about money, and they're the happiest, most faithful people I've ever heard of. One of them came over here for a few months and came to our church, and he is the most faithful man I've ever known. That's what I'd wish for.. keep your fame and money.. if all it's going to bring is the worries, troubles, and the feeling of lacking something, that generally comes with it, I really don't care.. happiness isn't bought that easily. In my opinion, money is the new golden calf. People depend on it as if without a lot of it they'd just die. But I've met a very few people who go by with so little money, and give the rest away, and they are happier than anyone else I know. One guy I met doesn't even earn money, or claim any unemployment benefits. He gets by on faith alone, and yet he still manages to afford evertything he really needs. How?.. because God provides, through people who have way too much money that they are (seriously) just acheing to give away because it doesn't bring them anything good. So they act on faith and give it away. Just because God works in mysterious ways doesn't mean people aren't involved. Money doesn't just fall from the sky when God provides. Sorry if I trailed off from the subject.. that's just my view on fame and money, and why I don't care whether I get it or not.
 21. I'd just like to encourage people to do their best to be open with people about how you feel, if that's what's getting you down. I know that's what was bothering me until a few weeks ago, and it helped a lot just letting everything off my back. And I don't mean by posting on this web forum. I tried posting in my blog about it, knowing that some people would read it.. but that didn't really help at all. You need to open with people you know in real life, rather than people you only know through a cable in the back of your PC. Also, the feelings you have can affect your actions significantly, and make you do very stupid things which can be hard to get out of. Even when you get rid of the original problem, the resulting circumstances you put yourself in can easily drag you back into that pit of despair. So once you get rid of what's been bothering you for so long, find something you can hold onto and be strong in, and get your life back in order. It's really not as easy to do as it is to talk about it, but I've only just managed to sort my life out and I can honestly say that despite how easy it is to give up, it really pays off to stick with it and sort everything out. Not only will you have less problems, but a lot of the stress will disappear too and you'll be much happier. I say that from my current situation right now, so this is still fresh in my mind right now. Find your strength. For me it's God.. for you it may be something else.. but don't kid yourself.. there's a big difference between a place of strength and a place of hiding to get away from problems. One sorts out your problems with persistence, the other doesn't. Find your strength and use it to sort everything out, and you'll be in a much better mood, I guarantee it.
 22.
Originally posted by Harry It's not anything like who likes chocolate, and what makes it not fair? They are different aren't they?
re-read my post and get a ******* IQ point or something. Yes. They are different. Well guess what? It's people like you, who hate everything "different" that is the main problem with the world. And you know what, that word "different" is just about the most moronic, blind, ignorant, and misinformed reasoning I have EVER heard. Why?.. because EVERYONE is different. We categorise things far too much.. like Hair colour, eye colour, height, IQ, "pretty/ugly", fat/thin, male/female.. The problem isn't the actual categorisation in itself but the discrimination it brings about. People are different from you, so you treat them differently. The biggest differences are those where there are only two options, such as gender and sexuality, and kind of skin clour. Yes, there are lots of different shades of skin colour, but with "white" as the majority, it tends to be separated into "white" and "coloured", or used to. And guess what? All three of those were, and are subject to discrimination. There are a hell of a lot of people who discriminate against gay people because they are "different", women because they are "inferior" (but that is just another word for different, in a bad way), and coloured people because they are also "different". And guess what? YOU ARE DIFFERENT TOO the problem is, that you are comparing the whole world to yourself, and making you judgements of "same" and "different" in that way. And that is an incredibly egotistical and uninformed thing to do. One of the first things we're taught is that "we're all different". Lots of people seem to disagree with that statement, but they're as misinformed as they claim that everyone else is, because we are all different, some people just have one HELL of a hard time accepting it.. just get it throught your thick damn skull that they're no more or less different than you. That doesn't mean they're not different, it means that you are aswell. Note to mitch: if you take a person posting something as an event, then a thread's half life will be the time it takes for the thread to be half as "alive" (as in, only half as many people posting in one day/week) oh and, wherever you got that definition of half-life from, there's a mistake in it. Just wondering if anyone else can spot it.. heh

I'm sure there were lots of people who said the same thing about black people in the 60s. But look at how people have changed since then.. sure, we're no-where near ideal just yet, but the point is the change has been for the better.. the only problem is there are always far more pessimists than enthusiasts, when it comes to changing society. 25.
Originally posted by gokents So remember, prejudice is based on having a negative opinion of something without any basis for that opinion. Not simply having a negative opinion.
Yeah I know.. It's just my personal opinion that everyone forms a negative opinion of someone without any basis at some point in their lives.. I know there's a huge difference between prejudice and simply disliking someone based on experience.. I just don't believe that anyone hasn't prejudged someone, although obviously there are much different magnitudes of prejudice.. I'm not necessarily saying that you judge everyone's entire personality by what they look like... meh.. I can't really describe it.. Your view is just as valid.. I just kind of don't believe anyone to have not been prejudiced in a slight way at some point in their lives.. though I realise that in your statement, you weren't really talking about the slight kind of prejudice, but the total opinion forming kind. with regards to Vegitto4's "it's not natural" comment:
if it was natural, all guys would be gay all girls would be gay
I believe we can all learn an important lesson about nature from here.. 1- If black skin was natural we'd all have it 2- If left-handed people were natural we'd all be one 3- There should only be one "natural" hair colour, all the rest aren't natural 4- Short people aren't natural, if they were we'd all be short 5- Straight people aren't natural.. otherwise we'd all be straight, and we're not Which is of course, a load of crap get the picture?.. Nature isn't in a habit of making every one of us the same. One of the most evil people of the last century was fighting for a race of people, which were all the same. It's not a good thing to get into.
Originally posted by James For the last damn time, people do not choose to be gay! Nobody chooses to be gay! I'd like you to tell me when you chose to be attracted to the opposite sex. Think about it. Did you ever consciously choose? When you were at school and you got a crush on a girl, did you sit there and choose who to have a crush on? Of course not! You had that crush because of your biology. You didn't choose to have a crush or fall in love. It just happened. You didn't sit there and think "Gee, I think I'd better choose to be heterosexual". You never chose that. Nobody ever chooses that. Sexuality is all the same. Nobody makes a conscious choice to have a particular sexuality; it's part of who they are. And that is why homosexuals and others continue to argue for what's right. That is why Martin Luther King argued for civil rights for blacks. And that is why I'm here now telling Vegitto4 why he is wrong. People cannot help and should not be discriminated against for who/what they are. When ignorant, prejudiced people learn this fundamental concept, the world will definitely be a better place.
I'd kind of have to agree.. in part.. o_O.. People don't choose to be one way or the other, but then I don't believe it's genetic either. It doesn't matter what we believe in, the truest thing that has ever been said about us is "we are the sum of our experiences" we're also the sum of our upbringing, our environment, and a whole load of other things that influence us and we don't even notice. Although homosexuality isn't an actual conscious choice, I do believe it is the result of experiences, upbringing, and a whole number of things which may influence that.. To be honest, I don't really know if we should find out if it's genetic.. a lot of people are opposed to even looking for the evidence at the moment, because if it turns out to be proved as a genetic thing, people may be able to choose the sexuality of their kids before birth. And it's a truly dangerous thing when we start playing God, and pass judgement on people before their birth. As far as I know, there is so far no proof of it being genetic.. I personally don't believe it is genetic either, but I also don't believe we shouldn't really look for that info until we can be responsible with it.
