1. Oops... I failed to read the 'don't' in 'don't know'... sorry.. I have a better answer.. You measure three coins each side the first time... Do the same the second time, but replace one of the groups of 3. If they all weigh the same, then the one you didn't weigh has the fake. the problem is you still don't know if the fake is heavy or light. If, on the other hand, one of the three sets of 3 coins is heavier or lighter, then you know it contains the fake and you also know whether the fake is heavier/lighter. Then, you follow the third step in my original plan. The only problem with that plan is that if the fake isn't one of the 9 coins you measure in step one and two, you can't know which one is fake.. (P.S. to the moderators.. ChibiV didn't double post.. I deleted my last post cos it was really short)
2. That isn't too hard. First, let's say the fake is lighter. First you put 6 coins on each side of the scale. As one is fake, the two groups will be a different weight. The lighter group of 6 has the fake. From the six coins which you know one is fake, put 3 on each side of the scale. Again, the lighter set of 3 will contain the fake. Put two of the three which you know contain the fake on the scale (one on each side). If they are both the same, then the one you didn't weigh is fake, and if one is lighter, then that one is fake.
3.
Originally posted by PiroMunkie ... Water doesn't have a flavor to begin with, lol. If it did, then we wouldn't have 'flavored water' (the kind that is carbonated and tastes like different fruits and stuff). Drinking water is like breathing air, unless there's something altered about it, it shouldn't really have a taste.
Actually, it does have a taste. The thing is, it's as you say, like air. If you move from an area with clean air to an area with polluted air, you can easily smell the pollution. Similarly, if you always live in a moderately polluted (nothing really major, and move to an area with clean air, the air actually has a cleaner smell, rather than just a lack of a dirty smell. In the same way, water appears to have no taste because we get used it, and it seems tasteless. but if you move to a different area with different ions in the water it tastes different. Generally, most people don't like boiled water because it tastes somehow 'flatter' than normal water. The reason for this is that the IONS in the water become seperated, and so the water loses it's taste. the H2O element doesn't change, but it may lose calcium ions and whatever else may be in it.
4. There are some fairly good movie downloads at this site: http://www.tribalgeneration.com/living_funstuff_downloads.shtml I think some of them are pretty old.. like "Why sumo is better than karate", illustrated by two cats.. This one's my favorite: http://www.tribalgeneration.co.uk/downloads/granny.zip
5. I think that ideally, no-one should want to live a different lifestyle if they were dying. I think we should live the kind of life that if we died at any moment we wouldn't have wasted it. HOWEVER.. that is just 'ideally', and in real life, no one really lives like that because they doubt and fear doing certain things because they have to live with the consequences. I think it's important to think of the consequences of your actions (You shouldn't go out having a wild, immoral time just because you know you'll die) but ideally you shouldn't fear doing something you really want to do. again, no one really lives like that though.
6. "I think that I think, therefore I might possibly be"- No idea where I read that.. I think it's quite ironic actually that people have gotten to a point where we are debating whether or not we exist. There are lots of things that are entirely possible on this subject. I'll give a few examples of thoughts I've had in the past: 1- "I exist, but do you?" 2- "Did Julius Caesar really exist? I never saw him...." 3- "That thing I did 3 months ago... did that really happen....." A few minutes later.. "Did I really think that just now????" So yeah.. I'll explain the kind of thoughts I had at the time in each case 1- "I know I exist.. I think, I feel, I see, I hear, but what about all these other guys.. I don't know that they think, feel, or see, or hear.. They just seem to react to everything in that way.. but I don't know that they actually exist...." After this point, the point starts going round in circles 2- "All these guys I learn about in history (I was still in school at the time)... did they ever exist?.. or does everyone just tell me that they did, but they never really did? I know I never met them, so how do I know if any of this really happened? Why should I believe something that some guy says happened, just because some other guy told him the exact same thing???" 3- "I remember doing that... but did it really happen... Can I prove it ever happened?.. um.. no..." "Did I really think that just now?.. um.. I think so.. therefore I might possibly have done???" Obviously, my attitudes have changed a lot.. just thought I'd share opinions I've had in the past..
7.
Originally posted by PiroMunkie I always found that quote rather interesting: "Love thy neighbor as yourself." Hrmmm.. well what if someone hates themself? That doesn't give them the right to bring spite and malice to their "neighbor", but it still happens anyway: "The rotten apple spoils his companion."
That's a good point. One thing to remember is that much of the bible does depend on the way you view things. There's another verse like that- I don't know the exact words but it goes along these lines: "Even you who do wrong know how to give good gifts to you children. When your child is hungry, do you give him a snake? How much greater, then will be the gifts from your father in heaven" Essentially Jesus says that everyone is kind to their children, so surely God is even kinder. Now, there is a small amnount of the population that that verse just won't relate to, because they were abused and beaten as children. The problem is that in this verse God's love is being compared to human love, and there is such a huge difference between the two that there are bound to be inconsistencies in the analogy. Similarly, in the verse "Love your neighbour as yourself", it was being focused towards people who mostly lived for themselves. A running theme all throughout the bible is that those who God made his people lived lives of immorality, mostly living for selfishness. Every so often a prophet would come along and tell them to change there ways, and more often than not they killed him. So when Jesus said that the most important commandment was "Love your neighbour as yourself", he said it to a group of people who had nothing but love for themself, and a small amount for others. So yeah.. there are a few things like that which don't seem right because we are all human, and we're all different, so some verses just don't relate to certain people..
8.
Originally posted by Anna :shifty: I take offense to that. Who is this "Matt Redman"? ::Walks over to Matt Redman, :: :grumble:
He's a pretty well-known worship leader (well-known, that is, if you are an English Christian). He said that at a seminar once.. but he didn't just do a joke about drummers, there were a few: "What's the difference between a violin and an onion?.. no one cries when you cut up a violin.." "How do you know when a singer is at your door?.. they can't find the right key and don't know when to come in.." "How do you confuse a bass player?.. show them the sheet music.." There were a few others as well.. but he didn't do keyboard players... and I play the keyboard :D (Matt Redman plays guitar)
9. OK.. The way I see it there are two sides of the story.. The problem is only one of you has actually been able to tell it yet. I'm not saying that his side of the story is any more true than yours, but here's my opinion: The two sides of the story are as such: Son Goten's side of the story is that he made an account for his friend under his name, without realising there was a charge for using the same account in two places. So he got charged $90, and his friend won't pay it. In that situation I know I'd be pretty pissed off... The other side of the story is that your friend makes an internet account for you, because he only gets charged $22 a month, and in theory won't be charged more for you using it. Then when the phone bill comes he asks you to pay $90 for using his account. In that situation I'd be pretty pissed off too.. So you have to bear in mind that your friend probably feels just as pissed off as you, because both of you feel that the other one has brought about this $90 charge. I have a few points that may or may not be of some use... -Don't expect an apology right away.. I know he really should apologise, but I speak from personal experience of similar situations (though not on the same magnitude) that he thinks he has nothing to apologise for. -I don't think he is inferring that $22 is actually worth more than your friendship. The way I see it, there are three attitudes someone could take on this situation- 1- $22 is worth nothing compared to our friendship 2- $22 is worth far more than our friendship 3- Money shouldn't even matter in our friendship Obviously he isn't in the first category, but I think you should find out if his thoughts are more along the lines of the third category - I don't know what you should do about the money. In my opinion, a good friend should really pay the full amount. But the problem is, that really goes for both Son Goten and his friend. What I would do is to just let it go and pay. And I seriously would do that, anmd have. Once, I lent £250 to a friend because he was in debt (£250 is about $350-400 or something), but I offered the money, he didn't ask for it. The plan was that he would pay it back £50 a month with his wages, but then something happened at work and I was sacked (or 'fired'), and I ended up calling off the debt when he still owed £200. So yes.. my advice is to just let it go.. if he's a good friend he will eventually pay it back. If he doesn't, then at least you were a good friend
10. It all depends on how you define 'friend', in my opinion...

14. I lead the worship at the youth group at our church- So I sing, but I also play the keyboard at the same time. It can take a lot of time to get used to doing both at once and learning when to play simply and when to play well. I have a fairly high singing voice- I don't know why that is, because I'm 19, so my voice broke a while ago. Apparently, soome of the songs we do are a bit too high for the girls in our worship group. I won't call it a worship band, because we only have a keyboardist (me), and a drummer... a drummer with a drum, on the music side. However, we do also have 3 singers (not including me).. which is odd..

16. This is something I've heard about that people have done in universities all over the U.K. I know that there are a few Christians besides me on the boards, so maybe they'd like to join in on the response side. The idea is this: 1- Basically, you ask any question you like and we (the Christians) answer them 2- This is not a religious debate in terms of "is there a God or not", but more of a questions about viewpoints, as in "what do you think about this", "Why do you think your God allows this", and "Why do you think this", sorts of questions. I'm not looking for a heated debate about whether God exists or not, because they usually turn nasty 3- I know it's called 'grill the Christian', but I don't mean that to exclude other religions, if you want to express a viewpoint on a question. However, lets try not to start inter-religion arguments (that goes for us too) OK.. let's begin..
17.
Originally posted by Bunni_Chan I do not beleive in destiny, I beleive in fate. Our "destiny" would be our exact life layed out before us, with a definite end in mind and no way of changing it. Fate, i believe, is various events that were meant to happen, events that present us with choices and the choices we make determine our destiny. Such as it might be fate that a certain boy meets a certain girl but whether or not he chooses to date this girl will determine his destiny. So we are in control of our destiny, which i define as the end of the road and where you end up.
I kind of agree with you there.. though there are lots of different words to describe it.. I've recently become Christian, so I believe that God can have a specific path for us, but we choose whether we travel it or not. I also believe that if you seriously pray for something, then things can happen to bring that about, even before you pray. Either because God can affect the past, or because God already knew what you would pray for. I have actually seen this happen, and I will tell you about it now. I haven't changed a single fact here, though whether you believe it or not is another matter: This summer, I went to a Christian conference (I managed to get in at about 4 weeks notice on a team, despite that it was fully booked) with our family, and friends of my family. The family we went with recently lost the father due to cancer (about 6 months ago, so not that recent) and during one of the evening meetings I felt that one of the boys (he's 15, named Tim) felt very upset, and was reminded of his Dad, who was also a Christian. I felt God telling me to tell him that his Dad was OK, and was in heaven, but I thought it was a bit much to say in a crowded area (about 3000 people aged 14-19), so I just said 'I think God's telling me you might want prayer'. That night, me and my parents prayed that God would reach him. The next morning, someone who didn't know him said in the morning meeting "God is telling me that there is a boy in here who recently lost his father. God wants him to know that his Dad is O.K. and in heaven". The thing is, this person received the message 3 days before, when Tim wasn't actually there, as he arrived late. God told them to wait 3 days and then tell the message to everyone. My points here are as follows: 1- For those who believe in God, it's fairly clear that God decided he wanted to reach Tim at this point, so we would say that it was ordained to happen (essentially the same as destined to happen). For those open-minded enough to accept the possibility that God exists, it should be fairly clear that either something's going on that we don't understand, or perhaps it was a huge coincedence, but a very unlikely one. For those who dismiss the possibility that a God of any kind exists, it seems fairly clear that either it was a huge coincedence, or you probably just think I'm lying. Or perhaps you've changed your opinion, but knowing how stubborn I used to be, I doubt it. 2- This also illustrates a little about the personal choice in destiny. We chose to pray that night that something would happen, and it did. I don't know if it would have happened if we didn't pray, because we did, so I won't bother going into that. But, if that guy who received the message chose to ignore it, Tim would never have got it. So, if God did decide to try to reach Tim, then the personal choices of me and that other guy (I don't know his name or anything else about him except Tim didn't know him) both affected the plan God had for that day. So.. that's my view on destiny, from personal experience.
18.
Originally posted by Jesus Chicken Does anyone here consider the Afgans who died attacking America, martyrs? I am not sure if people will be able to look past the fact that they killed so many innocents, but still. If they died for what they belive in, for their faith, are they martyrs? I hope you can look past the fact that people in America died for something they had no idea about, but I want some interesting discussion. All this talk about remembering 9\11 has got me thinkin. I was just wondering what everyone else thinks about this.
Well... yes.. they were martyrs of their particular faith.. if you count a martyr as someone who dies for religious ideas.. I'd give the reasons for my decision on that point, but they may offend some people, despite being matters of fact rather than opinion.. if anyone wants to know my reasons, PM me and I will get back to you as soon as possible (I don't get on much at the moment though)
19. I believe that God creates a destiny specifically for us, perhaps even one which we don't expect. But it's up to us whether or not we go along the road to that destiny. Ultimately, to get to where we should be in the future, we need to be where we should be now, and if we're not willing to make any sacrifices involved in that choice, we will never get to where God wants us.

21. The only flaw in realism I can see is that after the D-Day mission you become this one man army from that point on (actually, I'm not very far into it, so maybe it stops doing this after a while). Which isn't very realistic. One guy with a pistol against three rifle bearing Germans.. who wins? right.. the guy with the pistol. Though, admittedly, that's the kind of game I like :) so to hell with realism.
22. My opinions differ slightly to the majority said so far. Personally I think you're all very closed minded, with one exception. 1- Why do you all assume that she actually knew that leaving her kids there would kill them. You can't say that you haven't gone your whole lives without making some stupid mistake, not knowing the implications of it. The magnitude of this situation may differ from any which you have been responsible for, but the fact remains that stupid mistakes are easily made, even by people who should know better. 2- Why are the majority of you all so toward putting her to death.. not only that. but some of you want her to die in a cruel way, in the way which her children died. In my opinion, you are even more 'sick' than her, because you actually want this to happen, whereas she probably made a mistake. 3- Practically everyone does something bad, and blames it on someone else. Unfortunately, when they do it, they don't think about the consequences. She probably thought that if the police believed her, then they wouldn't ever find 'the guy that did it' anyway. Unfortunately, what she failed to realise- as everyone does- is that most people get caught. If you were in the same situation, I doubt that any of you would admit to what you did straight away. Any of you who say you would, obviously haven't been in that situation. I have, though to a lesser degree, i.e. I didn't cause anyone's death. Fortunately, it wasn't such a major thing as it went to the police or the courts. So there is my opinion. Personally, I don't think she should be put to death. And I hate the 'eye for an eye' policy, because you really don't know whether or not she is this sick person you portray her to be. The main reason I am disgusted with this policy, is that some of you seem to enjoy the thought of her suffering in the same way as her kids. In my opinion, that is just as sickening.

25.
Originally posted by The Harlequin I gave him those theories, but did you inquite where I got them from? No, you decided to disprove them. I never said I could disprove or prove whether you the universe was infinte, I was presenting a theory. Remember my comments on logic? As soon as the word infinity was mentioned, logic goes out the window. And infinity is referring to limitless more than never ending. The word ending implies that it started. When it comes to infinity, it's not something that started and will not end, it's something that is, will be, and is not bound by limits of any kind. Point 2. Again, offering a theory. Do not try and disprove me on a theoretical basis. Point 3. Does it matter when it repeats itself, only that it does. If it does not repeat itself, it merely ends, then it does not matter, because the whole idea goes out the window. Point 4. These dimension would be having the same effects now that they would be at any other time, so any extrapolations made on current data would be applicable to the current theory. Point 5. The idea of infinity makes everything speculation, as you've pointed out. However, in a realm where everything is speculation, speculate. Of course I can't prove that it is infinite, I know that as well as you do. But I can give the most likely series of events, as the best proof we've got. Point 6. We're not even talking about numbers here, we're talking about a concept. If infinity were a number, it wouldn't really be infinite. It merely is. And we can deal with the concept, although we can't visualise it. Now, I probably don't understand all this all well as you do, but again, I ask, did you bother to check my source? Achilles in The Quantam Universe, A Definitive History Of Infinity. A book written on the subject of infinity, when applied to the universe. Written by someone who has been researching the topic their entire lives. Most of that was theory, but it was scientifically backed-up theory.
Fair enough. My response to point 1: At one point you said 'Simple Cloricus. It has to be. A finite universe means finite possibilities'.. i took that to mean 'This is right and here's the proof'. Sorry if I misinterpreted that. My response to all other points: Given that I now understand that you were talking about a theory (as in- you didn't think that it was proof of what you thought), I agree with the other points. I think the overall point you're trying to make is- don't try to disprove my theory with your theory. I agree. My theories (or rather, someone else's theories which I happen to believe) give a look at the other side of the argument, essentially, your theory can't be right without mine being wrong, unless they make a bigger theory which involves the two. And since mine haven't been disproven, I was really trying to say ''Look, you can't prove that, because of this'' But now I realise you weren't trying to prove it, but offer a theory. So I apologise for the apparent arrogance of my post. One last point: You're only 14, but you're pretty smart for a 14 year old. Keep at it ;)
