Originally posted by Smoky Joe Well, it's worth enough for there to be billions of persons, all different from each other...
.... that's not what I meant.... 0.00000000001% could make everyone different, but the majority of the 1% is useless... you see.. DNA evolves slowly. That is why animals evolve. However most evolutions in DNA do not provoke any change in the animal, or it is lethal, in which case the animal dies (note - when I say animal, this applies to humans too- I just couldnt think of a better word without saying 'the 'being''). most of the 0.1% difference in genetics is the useless variety. Then a small amount accounts for the differences between us (but as I said in an earlier post, race has nothing to do with the differences in DNA).
Originally posted by Smoky Joe Well, 0.1% is actually a lot. Consider that, if each DNA strand of an average human stood up on top of each other, it could reach Pluto and back (a few times!). Imagine how much DNA is 0.1%...
yes, what you said about reaching pluto and back. Here's some idea of the irrelevance of that statistic.. If you were to take your computer, and then completely strip it of all of it's atoms, then string them up, the length of the string would be, umm, lets say a quite a distance. My guess is about 10,000,000,000,000,000 metres (based on my knowledge of the size of an atom). Which is 10,000,000,000,000 kilometres. Which is about 6,000,000,000,000 miles. get the idea? that could reach alpha centauri and back a few times. The point is, 0.1% difference is not a lot of relative difference. Yes, if you strung them all up they'd reach a far way, but a) DNA doesn't just string itself up b) the DNA in the 0.1% difference probably doesn't do anything anyway. Don't get the wrong idea 'bout this, I'm not tryin' to take the ****, man, I just think you should know how much that 0.1% of the way to pluto's really worth... nothing.

Sorry to correct you all on the 0.01% thing, but its actually 0.1%... :shifty: :shifty: Anyway... I've known this for some time, and I just thought i'd point out that the 0.1% doesn't account for racism. Your genes are just as different from someone of your own race than someone of a different race... so the fact of the matter is what you all said... racism=bad, the only difference with I'm saying is that the differences are in fact less.. so racism is even worse, and more pointless :) . PS.. did you know that the majority of the population of the world comes from only twenty-something maternal lines (i.e., if you follow a big 'family tree' into the past, it will converge at only 20something different women), regardless of your race, so there you go, we essentially have the same ancestors as other races too.. :)

So I haven't quite set a trend... yet...
Originally posted by Kittie well i was thinking...which is not normal for me...and i was wondering about evolution! there were the neanderthals and cro-magnums (sp) and then they died! well i mean to say, they eventually evolved into what we are today! do you think that that could someday happen to us? are humans evolving into something else?
Yes... but not for a long time... thousands/millions of years or so, before we can look back and see any significant difference. Though it's hard to tell... at the moment technology is evolving billions of times faster than any species does... and you have to consider... will the human race last that long with new upcoming technologies, therefore more advanced weapons?
Originally posted by jcgoudy When I checked it in the spell checker in Microsoft Word, it didn't say that either spellings were wrong. Weird. I've always known collectable as, well, collectable.. it just makes sense, collect - able, as in able to be collected... but it turns out either spelling is ok... sorry bout that.

I think my tactics were like this... 1- Light arrow to ganon's face. 2- Link to area behind ganon. 3- Link's sword to ganon's tail. 4- Repeat until unnecessary Oh yes, and always stock up on faeries before the battle :)
Originally posted by Dragonballzman I just go crazy when the words "english accent" are said coz' I think of a person thinking that english ppl are all posh and all that fake crap.
very nicely put. I couldn't have put it better myself... I'm from UK and I sound NOTHING like all the posh crap we hear. Personally I think I could imagine vegeta with a cockney or scouse accent...
Originally posted by Delian Of course they do...Not everything is just in the U.K, you know:smirk: :D
no, no, you misunderstand, I thought we were just damn weird, having traffic lights with little men on rather than just plain ordinary lights.... I wasn't implying that we have anything good that no-one else does... except maybe the fact that we got our own lil' island, and most other nations have to share a continent... (note: I said MOST, not ALL) -
Originally posted by Sephiroth no, people outside the UK do not have bonfire nights, or to be more specific, Guy Fawkes night, since it was an incident that only happened in the UK.... I don't see the point of it though, guy fawkes was burnt at the stake some 100+ years ago, and people celebrate his death every year by lighting fireworks and bonfires, quite sick, if you ask me....
I dunno about the 'celebrate his death' thing.. I think its just meaningless these days.. an excuse to star a fire and use explosives... oh yeah I suppose it is quite sick though, when some people make this 'guy fawkes' character out of wood and such, and then burn it on the bonfire....
Originally posted by Sephiroth HMV also has a pretty big anime video selection, though they are all dubbed....
It does??...... I've never noticed that before. Oh well, off I go to HMV....
Originally posted by D. Dark Here's a question (Not that difficult). What is the the chemical formula for octene?
C8, H,errr,16 i do believe, yes, C8 H16 PS. You're all kind of on the wrong linesw with the stuff in my question, it's quite simple..... CHLOROFORM! OK if any of you havent heard of chloroform that may be why, but i kind of thought someone may get it cos chloroform is always popping into the conversation in the Simpsons and other such shows...

Well, where I live, 'bonfire night' (I dunno whether you have that outside the UK or not.. I'd doubt it - it's a day where we basically have bonfires and fireworks and such.. there's a bit of history involved which i dont have the patience to go into..) may as well be called 'bonfire month or-so', cos people start setting off fireworks three weeks before bonfire night, and finish three weeks after, just in time for 'new year's month or so'.... all I can say is '...'
Originally posted by Alexander What would you do if, say, your best friend was gay/lesbian? How would you react? This has actually happened to me before.. One of my friends came out.. from that day on there were two little 'factions' within my social circle.. 1) "Those that stayed friends with the gay guy" 2) "The two faced ****** that rejected him" I was in group (1).. :)

I think it's a good idea... but one that hasn't been heard of before... let's face it, people just don't like communicating through a screen. The internet is fairly new.. and people in general just dont particularly like the idea that they may make 'friends' that they'll never meet... Of course this argument is very generalised and does not necessarily apply to all of you.. The problem with the internet, the way I see it, is that you can communicate with someone, and all of the telltale signs (such as body language and speech patterns) that usually indicate whether you deem a person sane - are not there. People don't stutter when they type, nor do they twitch when talking.. The net is a great way to bring distant people together.. but also a dangerous tool people who can't socialise in the real world...

well well well... It appears that akito was right all along. I just read this article in newscientist... I quote their exact words... "A new data-compression technique is causing consternation with a claim that it can shrink virtually random data up to 100 times without losing information. This would vastly speed up Internet video and boost memory capacities" sounds good, but there's always a 'but' aswell... "But compressing data that's truly random shouldn't be possible. 'I am inclined to be sceptical', says Vinay Vaishampayan, a mathematician at AT&T's Shannon lab in NEw Jersey. Florida based ZeoSync, which dreamed up the technique, has so far refused to say how it works, citing peending patent filings" ... I would never have beleived it...
