Originally posted by Darkness I don't believe anyone's fate is predetermined.
I remember some argument about this point. The general idea was that if your whole life was predetermined, and someone knew everything you were going to do, then he could predict what you would do no matter what, however if he told you what you were gonna do you wouldn't do it, just so that you could prove him wrong, so the 'fate' thing can't work.

...............:therock: yes..... very interesting topic...... although i do doubt it would be cold enough outside to freeze the water. no further comments required....... from me, anyway .....

What I think about all depends on the kind of mood I'm in that day.If I'm in a very good mood, all I can think about is why I'm in a very good mood (and it keeps me up all night too). If I'm in a normal kind of mood, I don't know what I usually think about. If I'm not in a good mood I plan for the next day. If I'm in one of my all time low moods I start to contemplate my very existence.

'important'.... thats why we call most of em 'bank holiday monday' or maybe there is a name but v. few people know them.
Originally posted by sweetreyes I know that most of us here have a different outak on life and why we're here. So I want people to express themselves. Do you feel you're here for a devine pupose or is your life nothing but suffering? Why do you feel that way? In my belief I feel that my life is nothing but a test to see what kind of person I truly am. Whether I am basically good or evil. I feel that my life will only have an impact on those close to me and that's it. I don't have a complex life( thank goodness) and luckily I haven't suffered much. NOTE THIS IS NOT A DEBATE ON WHO'S RIGHT OR WRONG!!!! SO PLEASE NO ARGUMENTS OR I'LL ASK FOR THE THREAD TO BE CLOSED
Nicely said. sorry I changed the size of your little note but If I didnt this'd be quite a long chunk of the page ;) (The sig doesnt help) You know what, I think about this kind of thing occasionally. I try not to cos when I do I tend to ask myself 'why does the universe exist' which isnt so bad. Then I ask 'Does the universe exist' which is quite scary. Youve really got to be able to think about it in the way i do to understand. Anyway... I'm really not sure. Too many things happen in my life for me to put it all down to coincidence. Certain numbers etc. always tend to be significant. for example my candidate no. in my GCSE exams was the same as the code I had to use for the photocopier at high school. Back when I was younger, whenever schools/clubs wand stuff decided to split us into colour groups, I was always on the blue team. Little things, that are nothing on their own but build up. This is all slightly irrelevant to the point you were making, but it is because of this that I have always wondered why I'm here. I had the idea that life may be a test, too, for reasons that I won't go into. As for the devine purpose, I'm really not sure about 'devine', but perhaps... by the way about the significant number thing. This is really weird, but i keep seeing '666' everywhere.....
Originally posted by sweetreyes But on the note of common sense. That may be true for intelligent ppl not to have common sense yet many of them do. Not all intelligent people had a common life but those who were let's say in lower-income families had no choice but to express their intelligence(in order to be sucessful in school) and their common sense (in order to survive the streets.) Their are many situations that you have to develop both and I am one who has a little of both( but I may not choose to use them)
yes... thats the problem when you try to divide people into groups. You can form as many stereotypes as you want but the vast majority are somewhere in between them. I think I was a bit vague when I said 'intelligent people'. Most people who do not appear to have a lot of common sense are the 'genius' kind of intelligence that very few of us can ever hope to acheive. The famous scientists and artists. And as you say (sort of), different circumstances make people different.

 :drunk: :worried: :nervous: :freak: :blackeye: :crying: *shudder*---- just had my physics exam at uni... If theres one thing I get out of exams it's a good think. I start to think about things in the time between when I finish the exam and when the exam finish. Today the subject of my good think was-- common sense- does it exist? You see a while ago at work I said something about intelligence to one of my friends and she asked, 'what's intelligence'... . . . after a brief exchange of funny looks i realised she was serious. That's when my assistant manager said 'isn't it when you dont have any common sense?' I was quite annoyed. Something about my exam today reminded me of this and I now have my own little theory. Basically there are three types of people (I said BASICALLY. I know this is simplifying things a bit) 1- scientists 2- artists (note- this includes writers) 3- people with 'common sense' all of which have different kinds of 'common sense'. Scientists see a group of things and try to simplify them into one 'system' in which everything applies the same to one thing as it does to everything else. They are used to giving and recieving precise instructions on how to do things. Often they are forced to accept things that they never encounter nor need to think about in their everyday lives. As 'common sense' allows us to come to terms with our everyday surroundings, it is inadequate in most areas of science. Artists see one thing and can expand it into many different things. They can make two pictures of the same thing and portray them both in different ways. They can add emotion to their work, give two conflicting ideas in the same peice of art, and portray the impossible in ways few others can. As opposed to scientists who need precise instructions, they can work on the most vague and abstract ideas known. A completely different form of common sense is required as they can look at something and see many differents sides to it. Common sense is sufficient for all other people as it has evolved over many millions of years to allow us to come to terms with our environment. If we lived in a completely different environment we would require a completely different kind of common sense, and the common sense we know of today would not exist. so theres my theory. The reason intelligent people dont seem to have any common sense is cos they dont have a very common (as in usual, not as in 'common' as a 'lower than me' kind of way) life or way of seeing things. Now for part 2 'ye olde suffering theory' For a long time people have turned away from religion for the following reason- 'theres too much suffering and evil in the world- how can there be a god?' I read the following in a book yesterday and thought i'd share it with you. There is a branch of mathematics called 'game theory' it basically has two or more 'players' who can do different things with associated costs and benefits. I have no idea how it works, therefore i'm not gonna criticise it, but an expert in game theory decided to use it on such theological ideas as the suffering idea. He found something quite remarkable. It turns out that the only strategy to do long-term good is to introduce such things as suffering and evil. This does not actually prove that a god exists. All it proves, or rather suggests, is that the question 'theres too much suffering and evil in the world- how can there be a god?' is irrelevant, and that the presence of suffering and evil can support both the non-existence and the existence of a god. phew.... i was wondering when i'd finish that.... im a little hyped up after that exam... all the nervous tension.

Dan L replied to D. Dark's topic in General Discussion
when i was 6 or 7 (cant remember exactly) my dad was taking us somewhere in the car, when suddenly it just stopped and the bonnet caught fire. and i dont mean a few flickers of flames i mean BIG fire. We all got out tho, thats whats important. I wasnt actually scared at the time (dunno why), but if it happened again it would be the scariest experience of my life. -

OK, OK.. if youve read the title youre no doubt confused. this is the story of my friend Danny.. and anyone who remembers that my name is Danny, yes thats right, my best friend's name is also Danny. this is a true story.. Here goes the story.. For years Danny C (we'll call him that to distinguish him from me, Danny L) was an only child. He lived with the loneliness that this entailed, and wished he had a brother or sister. One day when he was 16 his mum told Danny C that he had an older half-sister, but that her dad ran off and took her with him. Danny C met his sister. Then, when he 18, his mum told him that he also had a younger brother, and that his younger brother was the boy that for all his life, he thought was his cousin. You see Danny C's mum couldn't afford to feed and clothe two young boys (Danny C was 2 when his brother was born) and was going to put his brother up for adoption. At the same time, however, Danny C's uncle and aunt were looking to adopt, so the logical thing to do was to allow them to take care of Danny C's brother, that way Danny C's mum had no problems with money, and his brother was never very far away. There is no moral to this story, its just a little unusual. Yo here be a piccie of Danny C (sorry Danny....)
