AHHHGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lunox, the Jonas Brothers? The Jonas Brothers? Why? what's wrong with you???? do you like hannah montanna and high school musical, too?
High School Musical is fabulous, don't lie.
  2.
It is my understanding that while Korea and Japan have superior math/science scores in comparison to that of US children, their schools fail to adequately teach things like exposition, critical analysis, and argument in writing. You can always force more rote memorization and number-crunching onto a kid's plate without regard for the person, but I believe that tasks requiring more creativity are more contingent upon the person's internal condition. Generally I see this debate as a manifestation of an East/West cultural dichotomy, with the West focusing on the individual, and the East focusing on the group.
Well, one has to wonder why kids from India and China who are going into engineering and the sciences are, in the end, better suited to compete in the global world. In the end, both are important, but being an engineer will, probably more often than not, get you further ahead than someone whose focus lies solely in the liberal arts. Students who are good at humanities are almost a dime a dozen, whereas students who really go into science are more "valuable", for lack of a better word. Not to say that writing and critical analysis and etc. aren't important- it's best to be well rounded and good in all of these areas, but I think the eastern hemisphere has got it right when they're encouraging students to explore math and science.
  3.
Yeah, it's illegal. How odious and terrible! Nixon's War on Drugs has been more successful in brainwashing than any drug ever will be, haha. Anyway, stepping outside the mindset the government sings to you, he is actually saying pretty accurate stuff about LSD. It probably will not turn him into the next Hendrix, but it is a mind**** that mainly impairs your judgment and sends you away from reality with studies showing little permanent health effects. Neither will it necessarily and stereotypically send him sailing down the melodramatic seas of destruction. Eh, maybe tell him to look into salvia. It's a plant that has hallucinogenic traits that is legal in most states so it must be good for you since it's not illegal, haha. Shorter trip time, no side effects beyond leaving reality for a bit.
Sorry I don't get this "stop getting your panties in a bunch" attitude towards drugs. I really couldn't care less that LSD doesn't have a lot of permanent health effects, I still wouldn't want my friend to get into it thinking he'd become the next big rock star. Poor me, I've been so brainwashed.
  4. I thought most people knew that being smart or studying, or any combination of the two, were the greatest reasons people did well at a math test. I can see how self-esteem, or at least confidence at BS, would help someone at an essay-based literature exam, or debate team or Model UN. And being sure of yourself when taking a math exam helps, but it won't make up for not knowing the material. Although self-esteem without justification is sort of more prevalent in the US than in, let's say, South Korea. Call me an elitist *****, but I see American parents fawn over the fact that their son passed their math exam without even studying (because he chooses to play video games all day) and it makes me just blergh.
  5.
The 'bad' points of LSD are secondary; they lead onto taking harder drugs and whatnot. Also, it does impair your judgment, but really, compared to everything else LSD is one of the little demons out there.
An illegal drug is an illegal drug, and we don't even know how old this kid is. Telling Endrance that it's a "little demon" compared to other drugs and putting the word bad in quotation marks isn't really helping the cause here.

  7. I really like Lucy's post. Out of curiosity, I just wiki'd "arial font" and the picture that went along with the definition sort of showed an example of what she was talking about, I think. I'd say most people new to 'graphic design' would not be able to make something like this, as simple as it looks. Granted, this image has followed a formula, as every font definition on Wikipedia has this image with the respective font, but it is a good formula nonetheless. With a good sense of colors, size, and placement, it looks very pleasing to eye. Even with the most simple fonts, a solid hold on these elements can make it look good, which is why Retribution was able to make a lot of good-looking designs with minimal "flashy" effects.
  8. The one with baby Gimmy just made me facepalm. I felt like Gainax had just trolled us, but then it made me love them for being Gainax. I actually didn't enjoy the sixth one, mostly because while the art was pretty it was just the same several pictures over and over with random camera effects. Lol, but I loved how it was just all the TTGL girls being
Genome's harem
. My favorite is probably the first one, because you see Viral, Kamina, and Simon together.
  9.
Did you ever read A Spell for Chameleon? It's part of the Xanth series (the first one, I think) by Piers Anthony. There's a character who over the course of a month transforms from hideous genius, to average nobody, to drop-dead gorgeous airhead.
No, but it sounds interesting. I'll read it. [/OT post]
  10. Yeah, in retrospect, I agree completely with SunfallE. It's not the best idea to look for advice from an online forum on such a serious topic, even if our advice has good intentions.
  11. If you like the bands that Darren suggested, like REM, Damien Rice, Coldplay, (maybe even Radiohead), you'll probably like the band Wilco. Though I have to say Shame on You to Darren for reccing Damien Rice but excluding the songs The Blower's Daughter and Delicate. ;)
  12. I agree with Retribution. I think abortion is an option you should consider seriously. I'm not saying it's something you must do, but I think it's a very solid option. Whether or not you find it ethically moral or not is up to you, however. It's true that teenage pregnancy has been sugar-coated. I mean, look at this thread. No one even brought up abortion until the second page, and people have so far, in a sense, been saying "it'll be tough but if you cover these bases you'll be fine." The way I look at it, you won't be 'fine'. Even though you have a good-paying job, you love your girlfriend and are willing to go those extra miles, you're still 18. I looked at your profile, and hell, we were pretty much born around the same time. You're barely an adult, I find it difficult to believe that you have the strength to truly support a child. I'm not trying to be mean about it, either, but my own parents went through hell when they had their first child, and they were in the mid-20s. There are plenty of teenage pregnancies that have good turnouts, like Knuckles' Girl wrote. But there are plenty of, possibly more, teenage pregnancies that don't turn out well. If you have already made up your mind, then the advice others have given in this thread (other than Odin M Yggrasi) is here for you. I wish the best for you, and that you'll make a decision that you really believe in.
  13. I'm disappointed that Chocolate Underground turned out to be mediocre, I really liked the idea of the series. In other news, Birdy the Mighty had a disappointing first episode. I don't even know if I'll continue, because I think the animation just really bugged me. There were a lot of obvious QUALITY shots, and the jerkiness of the animation turned me off. And otherwise, the anime didn't really seem to offer much. But I'll stay with it for a couple of more episodes. And to anyone thinking about watching Soul Eater, I'd recommend it over Nabari No Ou if you're looking for a shounen series. I watched the first episode of that and I was sort of unimpressed.
  14.
This show is the cancer that is killing society.

YOU ARE THE CANCER THAT IS KILLING /B/
These shows make for good joke material with friends, but anyone who takes them seriously is hopeless. I like to counter all the terrible shows out there with the good shows that are out there, like Arrested Development. Oh, wait. :3 But really, there are good shows out there, so I just tend to focus on those.
  15. So, I don't want to die. But I'm not going to say it was everything I hoped for. And I think, if any of you saw my earlier post, I wanted this to be the greatest movie ever. In the end I was supremely disappointed.
I guess I can sum it up by saying it was the worst case of "too hyped up" I've ever seen. Heath Ledger was awesome, Christian Bale was badass, Rachel actually died. These were the good parts, but overall I think the movie suffered from being 1) way too long and 2) not focused enough. We had just finished the movie, and my friend asked me "do you remember what happened in the beginning?" I really couldn't remember. There were a bunch of unnecessary things- I think the Chinese business guy was useless. I also felt the movie was too ambitious. Joker was the villain, and then Two Face comes along, and supposedly both are caught or whatever. I know Two Face was just a part of Joker's plan, but in the end it wasn't enough woven into the movie that nicely and it felt like two movies were mushed together into a giant 2 and a half hour mesh. Also, where the hell was Batman in this movie? I felt like I saw Christian Bale's face for five minutes or something. There was so much side stuff that in the end I think the movie lost track of the main character. And call me crazy, but none of the fight/action scenes really had me going. So, I was disappointed. I think if I had seen it right when it came out, I would have been more impressed. It was way too hyped up for me and didn't deliver fully. But there were some awesome moments: Rachel was a great plot device. I really was impressed that they killed her, I for sure thought she would survive. I predicted that Batman would go for Dent, but I figured that naturally that somehow Rachel would make it out, too. I was really surprised when Gordon came back, too. Never suspected a thing, this movie had some great plot twists, and that's saying something. Heath Ledger owned The Joker, I mean really owned it. The twisted humor, that laugh, and the lip smacking and licking. It was seriously fantastic.

  16. I'm seeing it tonight. Oh god.
I'm awaiting an orgasm.

  17.
Seen Matt Damon when I accidentally bumped into the movie premier of Bourne Ultimatum in London last year.
*melts* Most wonderful sighting so far. :3
  18. I thought I'd add to the activity going on the Art Studio nowadays. My drawing is generally limited to me sketching stuff in Moleskin books, so most of my stuff is just quick sketches I do before I go to sleep. Here's my "old" stuff, as it's from a Moleskin that I've already filled up: Any thoughts welcome! :)
  19. The best advice I can give you now is just to keep on practicing. Just draw more and more, and you'll see your improvement. The biggest problem to conquer, I think, is proportion, which is something all learning artists struggle with. One problem I'd just like to point out is that your characters' necks tend to be very short, while their shoulder come up unnaturally, which makes their poses forced and stiff. Just tackle each problem at a time with more practice, and you'll get the hang of it! :) Hope you post more artwork!
  20. I enjoyed looking at all your artwork! Although throughout all of it, I'd say be more mindful of proportions as you are drawing. Some examples include (like Raiha mentioned) the male angel's shoulders, the schoolgirl's size of head as compared to the shortness of her upper body, Sesshomaru's neck. I think you tend to draw things very roundly and with soft edges, which can work very well (like in the male angel pic) but also backfire (like your Art of Otaku submission). In the end, his arms, which I am assuming is supposed to look muscular and chiseled, look chubby. But you're very much on the right track, and I can see definite improvements between your first post and your second post. For example, I can see your grasp on wrinkles/clothing improves by bounds between your 2 posts. I'd love to see more recent pieces. :3
  21. Today's episode
was really Katara-centric, so I didn't find it very entertaining. I don't really like Katara that much when compared to the other characters, so I just made myself watch it. I like that the creators take time to really develop characters, though.
Although, tomorrow's episode looks hilarious. :) I'm looking forward to it.
  22. Yeah, don't ask me to explain myself, but my favorite is the "Scarf on Brick still life (ink)". I love it! It's just so clean and wonderful. :) I'm really impressed with your charcoal stuff, all of it's awesome! I can't even offer real critique, other than I think you're just really close to getting to that "next stage". Especially with the hands, clearly you're good at what you do, but with more practice they can become more fluid and realistic. Hope you post more!
  23. Ehh...disappointed with my scores. But I guess never studying for the AP exams came and bit me in the butt, because I work a lot for the grade but I burn out by the end of the year. Time for me to recall my entire high school history. lol Sophomore year) AP World History, oh god. Our teacher was really sort of just insufferable, but in the end I studied enough for a 5. I was supremely surprised by my score, though. Junior year) aka the year of Stress, I took AP Physics B and AP Calculus AB and got a 3 on both. I was just happy I didn't get a 2 on physics, but I was surprised by my calculus score, I thought I had gotten a 4 or 5. On AP Lang and AP US I got 5s. Senior year) Confusing year, I got a 4 on AP Comp Gov, which I am confused about mostly because I thought I did *perfectly* on that exam, especially the written portion. But I got a 5 on AP US Gov. A 4 on AP European History, which is just hilarious because my AP Euro class was a directed-study, aka we literally did not read more than 3 full chapters. I guess with combined knowledge from AP Gov and AP US we managed to BS our way through everyhting, rofl. 5 on AP Lit, 3 on AP Stats, which saddens me because now I won't get any math/science credit at college. -_-
  24. I see famous people vicariously through my sister, who lives in NYC, and has seen Jesscia Alba, Jon Stewart, Meg Ryan, John Mayer, Stephen Colbert, Orson Scott Card and Jonathan Safran Foer (for the nerds, I think they're cool anyway), and God knows who else. I'll have to ask her for an update.
  25.
The Recobbled edition is a restoration project by fans to try to make the movie as close to the creator's original plans as they can. No denying even the official release was a good movie, though.
I should go back and watch the official release. Recobbled was good and all, but it was clear that after some point Richard Williams sacrificed good storytelling to push the limits of animation. I applaud his work as an animator, it's amazing, but it'd be interesting to see what the studios made of it. I barely remember anything from the official release, since I saw it when I was so little. But onwards: Otis: I (guess) it's an indie movie, as I don't think many people have heard of it and it was probably sort of low-budget. But, I think it's a great movie to watch with your friends. It's basically about this crazy guy who kidnaps young girls to recreate his fantasy of high school, although it's presented through a satire/black humor lens. Not amazing, it got sort of weird towards the end, but I still recommend it. Out of Africa: Robert Redford, yum. :3 It was a nice movie, but I found it too long. -_- WALL-E: SO GOOD
