Let's see. I watched the whole series. Just got done watching the last episode I assume. Honestly, I want to say I understand it, but in the back of my head, it's like "what the hell"
It's like the whole plot is based upon each character going through some type of depressed staged in their life, trying to figure out who or questioning their point in living....
"shrugs" that's what I gathered from it anyway. And mixed it with some spiritual talk.... so to speak.(If I'm wrong, don't mind me because I pick up on things very slowly)

On a scale from 1-10 (10 being highest) I'd probably give it a low 8, but high 7. It's not exactly my brand of tea. Too much thinking has to be done. (Some people like thinking, some people hate it. I'm bordeline about it. Which is why I said too much.) I don't really care for the depressive animes... And Shinji still makes me not care for it.

Overall, it's good, but nothing I'd break my neck to see over again.

an absolute anime classic, i love NGE, it must be pretty good for weta workshop (and not some **** company)to want to make a movie of it, i mean well drawnout characters compelling storyline, good fight scenes (for a giant robot vs aliens show), violence

just bought the platinum boxset on dvd

Took me a while to get into it at first, but i love the psychological overtones and how the mental plights of each child is broken down in certain episodes. It's a clever kind of anime that really begs for attention even if people don't know how to give it correctly. I've only seen the first season, i'd like to see whatever else is out there and i wouldn't mind going over the first episodes again since i kinda slacked off during the first few.

Not to mention i love Asuka. She got a bitchy attitude, but i got a weakness for fiery redheads. :animeswea

Asuka is a complete $%^. But at the end of the series you will feel extrmely bad for her. The sorrow she undergos is intense. Thats why I hated the TV ending b/c
she recovers from her depression in Eoe. But in the TV ending she lays naked in a bath tub?
Thats one reason i prefer Eoe over the original ending.

I also think one of the animes strongest themes is lonliness. All the chacters are extrmely lonely and you can feel it as the show progresses.

To be honest, when it comes to that aspect of Evangelion, I think the TV ending is a lot more realistic. Maybe I need to watch EoE again, but to me
Asuka's recovery
seemed so sudden, even jarring, that it really struck the wrong chord and yanked me out of the (otherwise engrossing) film. I said this in an earlier post, so at the risk of being repetitive, I'll say once again that I thought the writers should have spent more time on
her transformation.
:therock:

(Don't mind me... I just wanted to use that smilie.)

(why do I only seem to reply whenever Eva pops up?)

Well first of all, it should be noted that the
Asuka-in-a-tub
thing happens in 24, so it ends up being "canon" for both endings. Was it really necessary for it to happen? Well, yes, except the important thing isn't that particular act (as crushing as it is) so much as it indicates that
Asuka has simply ceased to will anything at all, even her own death
. Obviously this stems from 22 (
the mind-rape and, in the platinum ed, her discovery of Kaji's death
), but also goes back to events in 19, 16, and possibly even earlier.

The endings do different things with her after that. The TV series is of course, more vague on what happens after she
gets out of the hospital bed
(there's one shot of her
in the entry plug while 02 is in the lake
), but ultimately it's secondary to her
taking part in instrumentality
. Whether or not she ever
"recovers"
, she still ends up psychologically stripped and laid bare to herself, which basically happens in the same way to the other characters who get the 25-26 treatment.

I actually have a theory about her treatment in EoE. I sympathize with Dagger and others who think her
"recovery"
was too easy, but on the other hand I think it may make more sense to interpret that scene as if she
never really "recovered" at all
. Certainly she's not
catatonic
anymore, but the Asuka in that scene isn't the same (relatively sane) Asuka that you get in episode 8 and further on. This Asuka likes to
chant things about killing and how her dead mother is protecting her
. Certainly she's gained the will to fight again, but I don't think she's been
"fixed"
by any means... on the contrary. And I think I can actually support this reading of EoE with how the animators portray her in this scene - there's very little of the easy confidence of the early Asuka shown there, instead her face is constantly twisted into expressions of rage, cruelty, violence, and mania.

Well, take it with a grain of salt, but for me the scene reads better.

wow Fasteriskhead, seems to be a bigger eva fan then me, but of course that's not possible u-u.

Anyway, about the 'evangelion should be a classic' bit, i do think evangelion should be a classic it has all the qualities of a classic, not only that but it has come out on platium, doesn't that mean something?

even though when you like up evangelion it does coming under the depressing catergory, i do think that it is much more of a classic then some other anime that has been dubbed 'a classic'.

(p.s yes i am back)

Fasteriskhead: Well, considering that theory is going to require something of a paradigm shift on my part, but I do like it. While I don't know that it'll cause the scene to be more palatable for me on an emotional level, it's a lot more logical. Kudos.

On a slightly similar note... although I've given it some distance, I still have difficulty identifying just why I have such deep objections to the last scene of EoE. At first I believed it was because it's such a
hopeless
ending, but now I don't think that's it at all.

I'll use Texhnolyze as an example. By the end of the series,
every single character has died miserably. The final shot conveys no sense of redemption or hope; all it evokes is a sense of relief that the ordeal is over.
And yet it feels absolutely fitting and even satisfying. I can say for a fact that I wasn't more invested in Eva's characters than in Tex's, and I fully acknowledge that the Eva TV ending (which I prefer) may very well be representative of
false hope rather than real hope.
But I just can't like EoE's conclusion very much, darn it.

Plus, my reluctance to accept it wasn't exactly aided by my continual irritation over the lack of anamorphic widescreen. :p

archergaia,

I merged your thread with the official Neon Genesis Evangelion thread. Please note that if you want to talk about one specific anime, you should use the official thread for that anime. You can find the list as a sticky in the Anime Lounge called Official Threads Directory.

About your question, there IS a movie being planned. It's supposed to be planned by the same guys who did Lord of the Rings. I haven't heard any news in a while, but the last I did hear, they're still in the "collecting funds" stage. I have a major bone to pick with the NGE school's curriculum.

It seems that, no matter how much time elapses, the only subject covered in that school is the Same lecture on Second Impact. I know It was probably due to tight budgets, and so using the audio from the first episode and such. But to be honest, It kinda makes it sound like some sourt of Brainwashing-thingie that brainwashes the peoples.

Some stuff about a rumored new Eva project...

8-7-06 (7:04AM EDT)---- New Evangelion Anime Movie(s) Coming?
One of the biggest rumors running this summer among Japanese fans online involves Studio GAINAX, presumably under the aegis of Director Hideaki Anno, re-editing and adding new animation footage to the original 1995 26 episode Evangelion TV series (ala Gundam Zeta) and releasing them as a series of new movies to Japanese theaters. So the story goes, as many as 4 movies could be produced and the 4th one may be entirely new material or may contain an entirely new ending to the Evangelion saga. A side rumor from a few months ago indicates a staff room for Evangelion was being created or renovated at GAINAX HQ. This questionable information started circulating prior to the below mentioned GAINAX search launched, looking for production and animation staff for a forthcoming Hideaki Anno directed animated film project codenamed "Color" (Khara). Those who meet the criteria are encouraged to email to joboffer(AT)khara.co.jp or call. What can be confirmed now as fact is Evangelion and project "Color" are connected and the proof can be found on GAINAX's official EVA website. At the bottom of the page, the copyright statement has added "color" (in katakana) to the Project Eva copyright information. Other twists include the following: A whois search for the domain khara.co.jp reveals it is registered to Khara Corporation. The name Todoroki Ikki is listed as registration and tech contact. It's worth noting Anno Hideaki appeared in the movies Taste of Tea and Naisu No Mori with Todoroki Ikki. Additionally, a search on GAINAX's company overview page shows the Director's name is no longer present. This is leading many to speculate "Color / Khara" could be a spinoff studio perhaps similar to Hideo Kojima's production label "Kojima Productions" or Hayao Miyazaki's private office "Ni Bariki".
ANS isn't always right; just yesterday, they posted about what turned out to be a Type-Moon related hoax. However, they're also very good at picking up on early rumblings which later turn out to be true. So I think this could have some real merit to it (especially since no one has disputed the previously reported story about Anno's "Color" project.

Plus, ANN has put up a short piece based on Anime News Service's findings, and the people at ANN tend to be extremely cautious about making sure they post legitimate news stories. Of course, they take a neutral stance in regards to whether the Eva connection is real or imagined, but the fact that they thought it was worth even bringing up is significant.

God no. We already have, what, three endings? I think GAINAX is just trying to milk the money here. We've already got the Platinum Collection. This whole thing reminds me of Star Wars.

While I hope that this is just a rumor, I'll add that if it is true, it better have some real changes. Not added 2-second re-edited animation. This might be cool news for hard-core Eva fans, but it might annoy a lot of people, too.

It's possible. Anno's been getting back into anime as of late after some time off (see the fantastic Re: Cutie Honey), and Gainax has shown a willingness to return to their bygone series (see Aim for the Top 2). Moreover, there's the zillions of Eva games that have been coming out over the past decade, so we know Gainax isn't afraid to whore out their old successes.

That being said, though, the evidence for most of the ANS post is pretty thin. Now, Anno's definitely got a new project going on - I don't doubt this. However, the only cited connection between this project and NGE is the "color" addition to the Eva page... and this could mean practically anything. If Khara is really a spinoff studio, then adding it to the Eva page could just be a way of acknowledging the creator's new home, or it could be something else entirely. Speculating about "4 movies" and an "entirely new ending" is silly at this point if there's nothing else to back it up.

And I would add: personally, I don't think Anno would even be up for a major new Eva project, at least not with himself at the helm. NGE doesn't really seem to be where he is at the moment.

(I'm certainly willing to be proved wrong on all this, mind)

Newtype Hypes Evangelion Scoop (2006-08-08 10:09:41)
September's Newtype Japan advertises an "extra large scoop" on Evangelion in the October issue. Whether it is related to Hideaki Anno's new project is unknown. The issue streets September 10.
My personal guess? I think it's going to be an Evangelion Blu-ray set (or else something equally useless). I'm not inclined to trust a mag that runs a cover screaming "Suzumiya Haruhi RETURNS!!" followed by an article that basically says, "Maybe we'll make a second season--and maybe we won't. Hur hur hur." Or, if we're really lucky, we'll get another line of "Angels as scantily-clad chicks" figurines. I can hardly contain my excitement. :p

On a side note: ADV did say something about an LA movie announcement coming sometime in the fall. Hm.

-----------------------

In the immortal words of Indiana Jones, "I'm like a bad penny; I always turn up." The perfect quote for this situation, I think.

Anyway, ANS has posted small scans of the October NewType (which don't look like 'shops to me, but I guess one never knows?) as well as loads of other leaked/half-confirmed/unconfirmed stuff. I'd say that it's actually looking pretty darn likely at this point, and I would be totally lying if I tried to downplay my excitement.

Going with what F* said in his post from last month, it's intriguing to see that Anno is listed as the "General Supervisor"--I wonder how much involvement that will entail on his part. I can definitely understand when people say that he's moved past Eva now and is probably reluctant to revisit it, but at the same time, I can't imagine them pushing him into it without his full blessing. No matter what, I doubt he'll let them bastardize the franchise.

In some respects, I think that Eva (both as an anime series and a phenomenon) could use more closure. If the movies or whatever they are can even do that much, I'd consider them a success. I'm not talking about the narrative (or even psychological) aspects of the story's ending(s); I'm referring more to the fact that it causes such unrest even ten years after it aired. By now you'd think that fans and non-fans would be able to accept it for what it is--and for the fact that they'll ultimately take whatever they want to out of the experience of watching it, and if that's absolutely nothing, it's not necessarily the show's fault.

On a shallower note, Rei & Kaworu on the cover = win.

ETA: Inserted the image. Also, here's a JP site with more pictures.

*head/desk* Why can't they just stop messing with Eva so I can buy the box set already and not have to worry about buying anything Eva-related ever again? And considering that it's a whole new remake, it won't do much to bring a complete closure to the original story.

But going back on my previous opposition, I don't really care too much about the Eva franchise anymore. An Eva-fan OBer once told me that Gainax made Asuka/Rei porn, for god's sake, so what the hell. Eva has been whored for a long time now, so I shouldn't really freak out over this. D:

Admittedly, I'm hella interested in it and I'll watch it, but it's not sparking my excitement.
An Eva-fan OBer once told me that Gainax made Asuka/Rei porn, for god's sake, so what the hell.
I think it was straight porn with Asuka and Rei (and Misato?) in it? I can't say for sure as I haven't seen it myself, but oh well. It wasn't made by Gainax "officially," at any rate... :p
Tonight we met up with Evangelion Producer Toshimichi Ootsuki in Akihabara. According to Ootsuki-san the "contents" for the "1st part" of the new Rebuild Of Evangelion movies is now complete. The animation staff is also very close to being fully assembled. Building on past hints (the cover image of the October, 2006 issue of Newtype Magazine) Kaworu Nagisa and Rei Ayanami will be central characters in this new story. The theme of the "first part" movie will feature the characters in a school setting prior to the arrival of the angels.
Once again, Rei & Kaworu = win. What I don't understand, though, is that prior reports suggested that the first part (or even the first three parts) would be based on the existing series, with an unknown amount of new animation. Does this mean that we're getting all new animation? That would be lovely.

I also have to wonder how they'll do a prequel story centering around Rei and Kaworu--it would have to be an AU for that to work, I think, given the reason for Kaworu's late appearance in the original series. The school setting concept sounds curiously like Girlfriend of Steel, but I'm assuming they would have mentioned it already if it were actually related to that scenario.
I also have to wonder how they'll do a prequel story centering around Rei and Kaworu...
Picture the following. Rei is a new freshman at Lilith Academy, where the students' pure bodies and minds are wrapped in dark-colored seifuku and where collars must always be tidy - causing Third Impact slowly is preferred there. In the first segment of the story Rei will arrive at the academy only to be confronted by Kaworu, who has noticed that the bow on her uniform is crooked and, as they both stand in front of the statue with the big Seele mask, he tidies her up and sends her on her way. Later on after a number of further developments, Rei is asked by Kaworu to become his petit ange, meaning that Kaworu will act as Rei's "steward" and teach her the ways of the Academy. The style of the movie will involve a lot of flowing elegant slow motion shots, extremely detailed close-ups, classical music, bubbles or flowers everywhere, and AT fields used in unusual ways (piano-playing, making tea etc.).

(I'm sorry, I couldn't resist - Lilimite was just too good an idea. Anyways I'm very excited about all this, although I have absolutely no clue how it's going to turn out.)

I was so tempted on getting it but i never did. And wtf is up with all these new editions of evangeliob DVDs?, something fishy is going on if you ask me.
