Czenovian 1st Air-Fleet Flagship HMA Invincible, circa 664

The wind was picking up, Daedalus watched with a mild disinterest as Czenovia's standards fluttered against the strengthening breeze. His hands gripped gently against the rail, beyond which he could see the open vastness of sky ahead of him. Beneath them, New Czenoble grew more and more faint as the armada gained altitude, the sound of the fanfare still audible despite the distance between them, if only barely.

And that was it... they were going to war... for the twenty-two year old Daedalus it seemed... odd. Not wrong, wars weren't something you could simply black and white justify as being right or wrong, there were too many motivations and reasons for such a simple term as right or wrong. He had spent his entire life split equally between life in his laboratory, and life on the battlefield... Daedalus Almagest, the most skilled weaponsmithing alchemist of his generation... second only to his father Rueben. He created things that killed people... moral considerations were not something he allowed to bother him.

Wordlessly he turned as a set of heavy military boots drew slowly up to him, his eyes half closed, Daedalus imagined it to be another adjunct sent with another potential strategy for the assault on Brigit Town. Such pointlessness, the Czenovian military was in every respect superior to the motley garrison they would face. The person he came face to face with however was not a low ranking officer, his hard weathered face and piercing green eyes were instantly recognisable his immediate superior officer, Air General Rockwell Nord, one of the highest ranked men in the entire military, and Daedalus? father-in-law.

?Daydreaming again Commander ??

Ruffled, Daedalus saluted awkwardly before attempting a response.

?No sir. I was merely considering the upcoming battle.?

Rockwell?s eyes left Daedalus as he considered the azure blue sky skipping past them, he blew out a derisive breath before returning his attention to his first officer.

?I doubt that sincerely Daedalus. You probably don?t even think the word battle applies in this case.?

The young Almagest opened his mouth to refute the claim, but found himself strangely unable to do so. His father-in-law, much like his own father had this strange effect on Daedalus, as though they could read him as openly as one might a book. It irritated him to no end.

?Never forget, when someone is fighting for what they perceive is their home or freedom... it doesn?t matter how badly they?re out-numbered, or how badly they?re out-classed, they will fight to the bitter end... Imagine how hard you?d fight if someone tried to take Harriet from you.?

Daedalus found his eyes widening at the comment, it stung, perhaps he had a lot more to consider.

Brigit Town, circa 666

Staring at the ruined sections of the city, Daedalus really didn?t want to admit how right Rockwell had been. The taskforce had been entrenched in fighting for over two years, and though it soon appeared that they would achieve complete victory, the cost had already been too high. Leonhart was standing only a few feet away from his older brother, clenching his jaw desperately. His face, Daedalus reflected, was ghastly pale, and his eyes bloodshot from the exhaustion of fighting. Both pairs of eyes were firmly fixed on the body of their father.

The Invincible?s medical bay was all but empty, a handful of people gathered round to pay their respects to the fallen Almagest patriarch. Crown-Prince Mideus stood next to Leonhart, while Rockwell flanked his first officer. He looked oddly peaceful Daedalus thought, his face, which had been so perpetually contorted into a scowl or frown was emotionlessly serene. Daedalus had half expected his father's face to retain it's irritated glower even after the last breath had escaped his body. The only tell-tale sign that he was dead had been the freshly-cleaned wound at his heart, the legacy of the explosion which had killed him.

?I promise you both, his death will be fully investigated. This shouldn?t have been able to happen.?

He didn?t respond to Mideus? pledge, being in reality only half aware of it. It didn?t matter, the bomb had done it?s job, if only barely, a sliver of scrap-metal debris lodging in Rueben?s chest like a bullet, killing him instantly. Leonhart was busy thanking the heir to the throne for his concern, ever the statesman as their father had intended, he?d be the one to take over Magitech, to take over from their father now that he was gone...Daedalus, he would simply continue his work as he had always intended. Without warning, he felt a strong arm clasp his shoulder, and realised it was Rockwell trying to comfort him.

?I?m sorry Daedalus.?

Sorry ? Sorrow ? An expression of sadness at loss ? But really, what had Daedalus lost ? As a father, Rueben could barely have been described as adequate, utterly consumed by his work and career, by his genius. A man who had never displayed interest in Daedalus except when he had proven himself a potential equal, and even then there was a cold distain about it. No, Daedalus had not lost a father, the man who cared about him on a personal level was next to him offering condolences. He realised, what he had lost in the end was his employer, his mentor, his great obstacle to be surpassed, so what did that leave Daedalus now ?

?You both are being given leave to return your father to Czenovia.

?Thank you sir.?

His response was shaky, only mildly louder than a whisper. Why was he being affected like this ? Daedalus did not love his father... he respected him, even envied him, so why was this torrent of emotion threatening to break down his resolve ? His father had never smiled at him, never told him he was proud of him, the closed he?d come was being told he?d managed to live up to his father?s expectations. Why ? Why was it like this ?

?Leonhart ??

?Yeah Dae ??

?I?ll go home and inform mother and Cathy... it?s my responsibility.?

?Sure.?

Turning on his heel, Daedalus left, before anyone could see the stream of tears running down the Commander?s face.

Present Time

Slowly he became aware of his surroundings, the slow rhythm of his breathing. His eyes fluttered open and then closed again when the light of the room threatened to blind him. He could feel a hand resting on his own, slightly smaller, with similarly callused fingers. Of all of them, Daedalus had expected him to be the last to be there.

?Dwalish ??

Of all his children, Daedalus had to admit, Dwalish was the most like him, and thus my extension, the most like Rueben. The same single-minded genius, the same ruthless application, the same cold exterior. He had been a poor father with Dwalish, distant, leaving it to Harriet to raise him. In reality, he had been so similar to Rueben with his first born, he realised it had given him insight into the man, but Daedalus still cared for his son, he just didn?t know how to express it. Was that why he tried so hard now with Harrison ? Because he had only a limited time left ?

Dwalish merely regarded his father quietly before speaking.

?You had us worried, old man.?

He squeezed his son?s hand tightly. He would be a better father to Dwalish as well.

?I?m not dying that easily, son.?
Harrison was already regretting that he had agreed to go to the races with Macey, even if his father would have approved, he still hated behaving like a gentleman. He, like all students at Chaos, had taken the required etiquette classes. And though Harrison was the type of student to easily remember what he was taught, he still thought it was a complete and utter waste of time. His sword lessons were what he liked the most, if not for those he wouldn't even bother to attend school. He was wondering how he could get out of going when he was saved from getting into the waiting carriage when his mother approached.

"Thank goodness I caught you before you left." She was grinning broadly. "I've just received a message from the Eshe Rehema, Daedalus is awake!"

"That's excellent news," Macey moved to hug Harriet. "We should go to the hospital instead, the races can wait."

"Actually dear," Harriet said once Macey let go and stepped back, "We'll be picking Daedalus up and then joining you at the races." Her expression one of kindness and yet one of requesting a much needed moment alone for the family. She glanced over at Harrison meaningfully and looked back to see Macey nod. Harriet smiled warmly, she had known that Macey would understand without a word being spoken.

"Aww!" Victoria Ann pouted. "But I'd rather go see Uncle Daedalus first!"

"Into the carriage with you." Eva prodded, gently pushing her in that direction. "You'd just get underfoot and talk their ears off, you can do that at the races."

"I would not!" Victoria Ann protested, but she got into the carriage just the same.

Harrison was speechless, not sure what to think as the group got into the carriage and left. Only when Harriet tugged on his sleeve did he finally turn to follow her to the other carriage that was waiting to take the two of them to the hospital. He's really okay?

"Lets go Harrison," Harriet said as she climbed into the waiting carriage.

With a guilty start Harrison moved to help her before climbing in himself. "Is he really okay?" He asked after the door had been closed and the carriage was on his way.

"Of course, it would take more than that to hurt your father."

Harrison just nodded, still not trusting himself to speak. The past few days had been utterly confusing in regards to his father. With all that had happened, from getting stranded in New Czenoble, to Leonhart being missing and then presumed dead, getting hugged, having him offer to teach him and then protecting him from the blast. Even now, knowing that he was awake, he still had the oddest feeling in the pit of his stomach, as if he wanted to just cry, though it made no sense to him.

The trip to the Eshe Rehema felt like it took forever to Harrison and when the carriage finally pulled up it was all he could do to wait patiently for his mother instead of tearing off at a dead run to where Daedalus' room would be. It was probably just as well since they had barely entered the building when they came across Lady Bavaria, Morphia and Jack who were on their way out. Harrison resisted the urge to scowl at the trio openly, doing so in his mind instead. What are they doing here?

"Harriet dear," Lady Bavaria moved to embrace her warmly. "We've just come from visiting Daedalus, I can't tell you how happy I am to see that he's going to be just fine." She let go and moved to do the same to Harrison, but he stepped backwards out of reach and she merely smiled at him, reaching up to brush her hair back out of her eyes instead, as if that had been her intent in the first place.

"Will you be joining us at the races?" Harriet inquired of the group, behaving as if Harrison hadn't done anything at all, there was no need to make a scene out of showing sympathy and as far as she was concerned, Bavaria meant well, even if Harrison didn't appreciate it.

"Of course," Morphia answered. "I am involved in that after all."

"Naturally." Jack answered, his mind clearly elsewhere.

"In that case, we wouldn't want to keep you." Harrison said shortly. "I'm sure you'll all want to head back to Rosengard to get cleaned up before you head over."

Bavaria just smiled thinly, "How very kind of you Harrison." She nodded to Harriet. "I'll talk to you later dear." And then reaching up to brush yet another stray strand of hair out of her eyes, and she, along with Morphia and Jack were gone.

"Good riddance," Harrison muttered once they were out of earshot.

"Harrison!" Harriet said sharply.

"I know. I know." He apologized, though he didn't feel sorry one bit. "I should be more polite and behave like a gentleman." He rolled his eyes, causing Harriet to just sigh and then smile a bit at seeing him behave a little more like his old self.

Harrison came to a halt at the entrance to his father's room in the hospital, Daedalus was already sitting up on the edge of the bed, talking to the attending doctor who was in the process of clearing him to leave. Dawlish was sitting in the chair on the other side of the bed with Nellie leaning up against the wall next to him. Harrison didn't even realize he was blocking the door until Harriet gently nudged him to get him to stand aside so she could enter the room. The doctor turned upon hearing them and moved to greet Harriet, he handed her a sheet of paper.

"That has my findings and recommendations Lady Almagest, I see no reason to keep him here at this point. If you have any questions just let me know."

"Thank you doctor." Harriet said as she carefully folded up the slip of paper and put it into her pocket. The doctor just nodded and then left.

"Oh sweetheart." Harriet laughed softly as she moved to embrace Daedalus, chiding him gently. "Don't be in such a hurry to leave. You wouldn't want us to worry now would you?"

"Of course not. I'm fine Harriet, it would take more than that to kill me." He let go and turned to look at Harrison who was standing there, clearly choked up and fighting it. Daedalus just raised his right arm, extending his hand out and with a half startled cry Harrison took those final few steps over to hug him tightly.

"I... I..." He stammered a bit as he held on tight. "I thought you were going to..." He couldn't stop the few tears that escaped and ran down his cheeks as he had really thought that his father was not going to get better.

"It takes more than that to do the old man in," Dawlish said from the chair on the other side of the bed that he was sitting in.

Daedalus, after hugging Harrison in return, pushed him back gently, holding both shoulders in his hands. "I've lived through far worse than that Harrison, all that matters is that you're unharmed."

"How about we get out of here and head to the races?" Harriet suggested, breaking the tension that was starting to gather, knowing full well that some time together was what they really needed.

"I'm game." Nellie agreed.

Harrison reached up and brushed the few embarrassing tears on his cheeks away. "That would be fun actually." He looked almost pleadingly at Daedalus. "If you want to that is."

"Of course he does." Dawlish said with an impish grin, causing Daedalus to give him an odd look before he turned back to Harrison and Harriet and nodded.

Charles was directed up several flights of stairs towards Fauntleroy’s hospital room, directly across the hall from that of his uncle’s. In the hallway he exchanged brief glances with family members whose names he couldn’t quite recall, and quietly entered as Fauntleroy conversed with Beatriste. She sat by his bedside, enjoying a cup of coffee as she read through the morning’s Chronicle. Fauntleroy's arm was in a sling and his hair a terrible mess.

“Artemis Air Transports submitted an offer this morning,” he said, “And according to the Justice at Magitech it’s a very significant one. They‘d like you to meet with them once you‘re able, and discuss the fine print.”

“I don’t understand how that’s any of my business, Bea. I hadn’t even accepted Uncle Daedalus’ offer yet.”

Beatriste set aside her drink and pointed at the front page of The Chronicle. “INJURED ALMAGEST HEIR ACCEPTS NEW ROLE AT MAGITECH,” the headline read. Fauntleroy nearly choked upon seeing it.

“However did I miss that?! It would seem The Chronicle knows the entire story, even before I do.”

“Someone must have overheard Daedalus at the party,” Beatriste said, “Corporate spies are everywhere these days...”

“It’s not the spying I worry about. It’s the bullets.”

Fauntleroy turned towards the doorway, noticing Charles, “Oh Charles, I’ve been expecting you!”

“Oh. Yes. So I’ve heard. Are you doing alright?”

“All things considered I’m doing very well. I’m even ready to leave the hospital, assuming they ever let me out of here.”

Beatriste smiled at Charles, “Hello Charles. I gave the kids to the nanny so that I could visit my brother. I hope that’s alright.”

“Please, Beatriste, I’ve always trusted your judgment with Bertram and Pearl. You seem to know them even better than I do.”

“Hush now. I’ll give you two some time to discuss things in private,” Beatriste said with a sly grin as she rose to her feet, “But for the record, Charles, I think you should accept Fonty’s proposal. It would be wonderful to have you around High Czenoble and the children again.”

“What are you talking about?”

The woman merely smiled as she exited the room, the trail of her modest green dress following closely behind her. Charles sat down by Fauntleroy’s side, noticeably confused.

“Have you read the paper today yet Charles?” Fauntleroy asked, “It would seem that I’ve been promoted to a leadership position within my father’s company.”

“I had no idea! Congratulations, Faunt--”

“No congratulations, please. I’m terrified,” he replied dryly, “I know absolutely nothing about business, or alchemy, or any of this nonsense. But Daedalus is not well, and there’s no telling how much time he might have left.”

“I see.”

“Worse yet, it would seem Magitech is under attack from other companies. It may ultimately be up to me to decide the future of the family business, and I need someone I can trust by my side. This is why I‘d like to ask you to work with me in Magitech, Charles. You have always been a good friend; I couldn‘t think of anyone else more capable.”

Charles slowly nodded, thinking about the offer carefully. He had always loved his job as a conductor, but it was obvious that he might not be able to do that for some time. At the very least, he thought, It would give me a chance to spend more time with the children.

“Very well, Fauntleroy,” Charles said as he extended his hand, “I accept your offer. I can only hope you’ll be fair and professional towards me.”

“That's very unlikely,” he replied with a laugh, “But I’ll try to be just the same.”

“So when do I start?”

“Right now!”

"What?"

"Stop asking questions and find me a pair of crutches before Alecia returns. You need to help me plan my escape."

It was at that moment Charles realized that this would not be a normal job.
Victoria Ann had really wanted to go to the hospital with Harriet and Harrison, but before long she got caught up in the excitement of going to the Chimera races. It was hard not to with all the carriages heading in the direction of where the races would be held. Even the very town was festively done with banners and all sorts of activities being held. In the past Victoria had been taken around town on her days off since mother was not one to take her to something like the Races.

"Do they really bet money on who will win?" She piped up excitedly, wondering if she would be allowed to do the same.

"Of course dear," Macey told her and then answered her unspoken thought. "You're a bit too young for that though."

"Figures." Victoria sighed and then as if remembering she stole her hand into her foremost pocket to reassure herself that she still had the little vial made by the other students at the school.

"What do you have there?" Eva startled her by taking the little vial from her. Victoria had been so busy looking out at the gathering people that she hadn't realized that she had taken it out.

"Don't open it!" She cried out when Eva moved to check what seemed to be a little bottle of perfume, something that was not uncommon for the female students at Chaos to carry around with them.

"Why not?" Eva asked, her hand still poised to do so as she had been intending to check for herself just what scent was in the bottle.

Victoria reached out and snatched it from her, stuffing it back in her pocket after assuring herself that the lid was still tightly on. She turned slightly red when the two of them looked at her. Macey raising her eyebrow a bit over her outburst.

"There's no need to get worked up Victoria."

"It's not that!" She looked at both of them, squirming a bit, unable to keep the guilty look off of her face.

"What are you up to Victoria Ann." Macey fixed her with a stern look.

"I... I decided to get Lector Moebius for being such a jerk." She looked down and continued in a soft voice. "The vial doesn't have perfume, it has a type of stink oil made by some of the alchemy students at Choas. We all have one so we can open the lid and sneak it into his pocket when he's not looking." She cringed... expecting to get into trouble.

Macey's face went through a variety of expressions. In five seconds she had gone from annoyance, to amusement, to rib cracking laughter. Eva appeared to be suffering from the same, and like good and proper adults, both made valiant attempts to mask the good humor now threatening to express itself in the form of hysterics. Too late.

Victoria Ann watched them both howl and shriek with unrestrained laughter, throwing their arms around each other for support while they groped for their handkerchiefs to wipe streaming eyes. Eva started to say something, but was overtaken by an attack of the giggles, while Macey attempted to mug a stern look but ended up snorting into her hanky. Victoria dragged one toe across the ground and waited for them to start acting like adults again instead of completely unhinged second cousins. Macey pulled herself together and kept her expression extremely tight lipped, exerting a superhuman amount of effort in the process.

"Now then Victoria darling, I understand your frustrations but...but..."

"You really should be careful that nobody sees you....because...because..."

Eva bit into the material of her fabric to stop herself from laughing once more, and Victoria smiled up at them both in a burst of good cheer. Not only was she not going to get the smack of her life, but Eva was even telling her how to do it without getting caught. Had the world gone mad?

After a few more moments, the hilarity died down, and just in time, as the carriage pulled up to the entrance for the nobles. The footman dismounted and reached in to help Eva out first, then Victoria Ann, and then Macey Ellen, all three of which looking pretty as anything. Some flashbulbs went off, Eva walking before as Victoria Ann held Macey's hand. Some reporters shouted questions at them, but Macey merely smiled and held up her parasol, sometimes obscuring the view of her face to foil a photographer's attempt at a picture.

Then the three mounted the steps leading up to the private boxes of the privileged few, Victoria jerking free of Macey's hand and running on ahead, to claim one of the front seats in the Almagest's box for her own. Eva murmured some excuse to Macey and slipped off, presumably to look at the Chimaeras being entered this time around.

"When will the others get here Macey?"

"Well Aunt Harriet will most likely insist that Uncle Daedalus changes his outfit and Harrison will balk at the idea of delays, but Fonty should manage his daring daylight escape any moment now..."

"That sounds like so much fun... I can't wait for the races to start!"

"Now now, relax. They'll start when they do. And in the confusion you can trip off and pull your little prank, and then come right back here. I'll even pretend you never left."

"You'd LIE for me?"

"Of course! Why not? This is the stuff being young is made off."

The expansive park with lush and detailed landscaping wasn't quite as free as Alecia and Alexander would have liked. Families had shown up in droves with blankets spread out on the grass as their children enjoyed running about in silly games of tag while the older one's attempted to get kites to fly in the ever unpredictable breezes of High Czenoble. And for those who didn't think to bring a picnic basket full of goodies, there were plenty of street vender's selling different snacks along with chilled drinks for those who wished to pay for a bite to eat.

Still as Alecia smoothed out her dress on the small blanket that they were sitting on, Alexander couldn't help but admire how lovely she was sitting there in her outfit that was similar to her potionist uniform only in varying shades of blue with black trim. He had always liked how blue brought out the color of her eyes even more. And with the slight breeze teasing her hair, it just made for a picture perfect moment, making him wish he had a camera.

"What are you thinking?" She asked when she realized he was watching her instead of enjoying the view of the city that was visible from their vantage point on one of the higher hills in the park.

"I was thinking about how lovely you are." He smiled when she blushed at the compliment. "I'm also a bit concerned that you've been so tired lately, you've been like this for just over a week and a half. You're not coming down with anything are you?"

"Not that I'm aware of," Alecia frowned slightly as she turned to look out at the city after leaning into Alexander who responded by putting his arm around her.

"I've had some headaches as well, but nothing else to go along with it." She laughed slightly, "If I am coming down with something, it's taking it's own sweet time. Seriously though, other than being so tired and the occasional headache, I feel perfectly fine."

Alexander didn't have a response to that. If it had only happened once the mess with Leonhart had started he wouldn't have worried since something like that was extremely stressful. But the tiredness had started well before that had come up. Though he was certain that the stress of all that had happened didn't help.

"Did you want to join the others at the races later? And what about Henry and Dame Anna? Did you still want to insist that they come with us? After all Lady Bavaria won't have a say over who's allowed at the races." He reminded her, since public events like that were open to everyone and Bavaria couldn't bar them from the races like she had from Rosengard.

"I left a note with the housekeeper to that effect, I'm not sure if they'll want to though. I just hope Henry doesn't back out of participating after what happened. I understand that he's quite good at racing." Alecia sighed slightly. "I wish Grandfather was still here."

Before Alexander could answer that a change in the breeze brought the smell of cooking meat in their direction, causing Alecia to wrinkle her nose in distaste.

"Ugh... That's just awful." She grimaced, surprising Alexander since it was something that she normally liked. And then she surprised him even further by shrugging free and getting up.

"Lets go and check on Fauntleroy before I get sick, that smell is making me nauseous." To Alexander's surprise she really did look like she was going to be ill. Hastily he snatched the blanket, folding it up and then caught up with Alecia who was hurrying away from the smell of the food cooking.

"Are you alright?" He asked her.

Alecia took a deep breath, "Yes, for a moment there that just made me feel like I was going to be sick." She smiled at Alexander. "I'm fine now so lets go. We can decide later if we want to go to the races or not." She reached over and took his arm in hers before heading towards the nearest train station, leaving Alexander wondering what had just happened.

Catherine had slept later than she intended, worn out by the recent events and unavoidable disputes and disagreements between the family members. Even now as she got up and took advantage of the bath that was waiting for her, she wondered if the family would ever be right again. So much hostility and distrust as well as jealously and greed. With a sigh she finished up, taking a moment to dry off before heading out to start getting ready for the Chimera Races.

Though she would rather not go, it would be better than sitting at home and worrying over things she could not change. Catherine had barely pulled out one of her fancier dresses, a soft lavender affair when her personal maid came in to help her get dressed.

?Good news ma?am! We?ve just received word that Lord Almagest has woken up!?

Catherine smiled at the news, even though she had every faith that Daedalus was strong, it had worried her that he had gotten hurt in the first place. I?ll need to go and visit him before I head to the races she thought as she stood still for the maid.

?Any other news I should be aware of??

?Lady Harriet has gone with Harrison to pick him up and head for the races ma?am and Macey, Eva and Victoria Ann have already left.?

Catherine turned to take a look at herself in the tall mirror once the maid finished tying up the last of the laces to her dress. Making sure everything was in place as she took a moment to fasten her hat after deftly doing her hair up. Even now she always took care of that herself. Satisfied she grabbed the matching parasol and went down to snatch a bit of breakfast.

It didn?t take long even with her taking a moment to read The Chronicle, the headline making her sigh a bit at the tackiness of it all, since it was clear that even a Wake was not free of the gossip and information prying that often went on. She set the paper down and got up to head for the front of Rosengard since a quick look at her watch indicated that her escort would be arriving soon. She was almost there when she ran into Lady Bavaria. Jack and Morphia were there as well though the latter two were already heading up the stairs towards the guest rooms.

?I have good news for you Catherine.? Bavaria said once she was close enough to hear her.

?If you are referring to Daedalus, I have already been informed.? Catherine moved to go around her. ?If you?ll excuse me dear, I?m on my way to the races.?

?Of course, I?ll be along later as well.? Bavaria moved aside since she was blocking the doors and then gave a half startled gasp of outrage. ?What is going on here?? She demanded upon seeing who was getting out of the carriage that had just arrived.

?I would have thought it was obvious Bavaria,? Catherine said as she paused to turn and look at her. ?You may insist on having the two of them barred from Rosengard, but who I attend the races with is none of your business.?

Catherine turned and went to greet Henry who was hesitantly coming over to get her. ?I?m sorry we?re late Catherine.? He said politely as he offered her his arm.

?There?s nothing to worry about,? Catherine said kindly as he helped her into the carriage and got back in himself.

?Thank you for accepting my invitation Dame Anna,? She said kindly as the carriage pulled away from Rosengard.

?You shouldn?t do that, you?ll only make her angry with you.? Dame Anna replied, indicating Lady Bavaria who was looking furious as the carriage pulled away.

?Nonsense!? Catherine said with a wave of her hand.

Back at Vincent's penthouse appartment, Gadget tried on a new suit brought to him that morning by Audrey, Vincent's assistant. As he had successfully tied the silk scarf around his neck, he walked to Vincent's study. The older man was talking to an elegant telephone made of polished dark wood and ivory.

"How do I look?" Gadget asked with a grin, and spun around. To his amazement Vincent just frowned to him and waved his hand towards the door. Stunned by this, Gadget walked out.

So this was how it was going to be, then? Was Gadget just a moment's pleasure for Vincent, meant to please his urges whenever he felt like it?

Frustrated, Gadget snuck into the foyer, grabbed his coat from the closet and went down with the elevator. He needed to see Macey.

As he stepped out of the tall building, Gadget realized that this was his first time alone in the streets of High Czenoble. So why not take this chance to look around?

The day was nice and sunny, with small clouds dashing across the sky like lambs herded by the mountain winds. The houses at this part of the city were tall and decorative, and the streets between them were narrow and busy with people. Little boys sold The Chronicle at streetcorners, and streetvendors stood behind carts selling snacks, tobacco, magazines and jewelry. People in the streets were polite to each other, while trying to look as important as possible. This all amused Gadget, and soon he forgot Vincent and Macey altogether.

Then a poster on a lamppost caught his attention. It had black-and-white pictures of a man with a hat and a woman looking down. There was quite a lot of text as well.

"W-A-N-T-E-D... Wanted", Gadget spelled. Reading was tough to him, since he hadn't read much anything after leaving Mrs. Charcoal's orphanage.

Luckily an elderly couple passed him at that moment.

"Is everything a-okay, young man?" the old gentleman asked.

"Oh, it's nothing, sir. I'm just wondering who these two people in the poster are", Gadget replied with a corteous bow he had learned from Vincent.

"Oh, those two are the Starks", the lady answered. "They're bad business, young man. They want to ruin the work of the honest people of our city. Spreading filthy lies and terrorizing the city, they are... Did you hear about the bomb in Rosengard, the Almagest's abode? They say those two were responsible!"

"Now now, dear Edina, you shouldn't believe everything you hear in your knitting group", the old man said with his voice full of patience for his blabbering wife." You should read today's Chronicle, young man - it has all the facts."

Gadget thanked the silly old couple, and they continued their daily stroll. Gadget leaned closer to the poster to see the pictures of the Starks properly. There was something oddly familiar about the man and the woman, but Gadget couldn't quite put his finger on it.

"Donner... and B... Blair Stark", he read. As he walked on, the pictures of the two hovered in his mind.

Alexander had dropped Alecia off at the front doors of the Eshe Rehema Medical Center while he went down the street to check in at the Royal Police Guard. Even though he was off duty, he wanted to check on the news of just how the bomb had gotten into Rosengard in the first place. By now he figured there was enough information for a preliminary report on what had happened.

He had barely made it in the door before his superior officer Jonathan Grants spotted him and pulled him into his office, making Alexander uncomfortable after what he had told him the other night. Something that had him looking away instead of directly at him like he usually did.

"Take a seat Alexander," He instructed as he himself did so behind his desk.

"I'd rather stand sir."

"Nonsense." He dismissed his concern waiting until Alexander had reluctantly done as asked. "Now I can only think of one reason why you would be here and that would be to get the official report on how the investigation is coming along." He shoved a set of papers across the desk towards Alexander.

"Since Lord Almagest is still in the process of being released from the Eshe Rehema, there's no reason why you can't simply take this over to him. I was about to do so myself so you'll be doing me a favor." He leaned back and waited patiently while Alexander glanced through the report.

"Is this accurate? I mean... you realize what this implies right?"

"Of course I do, even if she is his widow, no one is above being considered. Now personally I think it's nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence, but she's going to have some serious explaining to do to Lord Almagest I would imagine." He stood up, Alexander doing the same. "Now get going, you can fill me in on your own investigation later as well as what I discussed with you the other day."

Alexander didn't have a chance to even respond to that as Jonathan Grants steered him towards the door and then shut it firmly behind him once he was out in the corridor. With a shrug, Alexander left to head back to where Alecia was.

It didn't take Alexander long to find Alecia who was talking to Daedalus, Harriet and Harrison. Just as he entered the room both Nellie and Dawlish left after muttering something about arranging for a carriage.

"There you are." Alecia said as Alexander came over to join her.

"I'm glad to see you doing better." Alexander caught himself before he added a sir to the end. There was something about Daedalus that always had him wanting to address him in that manner. He supposed it was on account of how he carried himself or the fact that he had served in the military.

"We should get going dad, it won't take long for the others to get us a carriage." Harrison looked impatient to be gone, almost tugging on Daedalus's sleeve before he caught himself and stopped.

"Why don't we go and help them Harrison?" Harriet suggested. "I believe Alexander needs to talk to your father if I'm not mistaken." She smiled at Alexander and then taking Harrison with her she left.

"I'll be checking on Fauntleroy," Alecia said simply before she too left the room. A moment later it was just the two of them and Daedalus simply reached his hand out for the papers that Alexander had on him. He waited patiently while he read them, noting how his expression turned to one of barely concealed anger at what was in the report.

"I had assumed as much." He finally said after folding the report and tucking it into one of his pockets. "Who else has been told about this?"

"No one. Sir Grants was on his way to bring this report to you when I checked in. I'm afraid it's just as he said, by removing the security without your consent, or ensuring that the replacements were there first... Rosengard was without any form of protection on all fronts for over an hour. More than enough time for someone to slip a bomb in."

Alexander resisted the urge to get angry himself, after all, Lady Bavaria's stupidity had almost killed them all. "They're double checking the reports, but everything points to the bomb being smuggled in during that lapse of security. The guard you had arranged, before they were dismissed, report that a standard check of the area showed the cellar to be empty at that time."

Daedalus nodded grimly. "Thank you for bringing this over Alexander and for ignoring Bavaria's orders to stay out of Rosengard. She and I will be having a little chat about that, among other things." He stood up. "Now if you'll excuse me, my family is waiting for me." Alexander just watched him leave and then he too left the room to go and find Alecia.

After a brief carriage ride across town, Catherine Sara’s coach pulled before the ivory-colored gates of the High Czenoble Downs, better known as the Czenovian Chiamera Circuit. The roads were packed with visitors of all walks of life, each eager for the first heat of races to begin. A small fair had assembled out front, containing dozens of colorful merchants eager to sell their wares. In a time when Czenovia was in such great turmoil, it was a pleasant sight to see such great crowds joining together for a peaceful occasion.

Dame Anna stared out across the vast sea of carriages and steam cars, “Every year it seems to grow larger and larger, doesn’t it Lady Almagest?”

Catherine Sara winced, “Please don’t be so formal, Anna. Today you are my guest, and more importantly you are my friend. Although Bavaria may attempt to keep you from Rosengard, I‘ll always make certain that both you and Henry have a home.”

“Thank you very much, Catherine,” Henry said gratefully, “But if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll walk the rest of the way. It is only a short walk to the stables from here.”

“Oh! And before I forget,” Catherine said as she reached into her purse and withdrew a small pin, “I wanted you to have it.”

“What’s this?”

Henry eyed the object carefully. It was a small silver pin, featuring both a lion and the Almagest family seal.

“This was… this was Leonhart’s. He wore it on the day he received the Wreath of Valor from King Prosperous himself.”

“Oh Catherine, no,” Anna pleaded as she reached for a handkerchief, “Wouldn’t one of the other children..?”

“They have more than enough, I can assure you!” she quickly replied, “I can think of no one more deserving of it than our young chimaera jockey.”

Anna’s eyes began to water as she embraced her child tightly, “Oh Henry. Please be careful out there. And try not to go so fast if you can help it.”

“What she meant to say was ‘Good luck,’” Catherine added, “We’ll be waving at you from the Achard Marquee.”

Henry nodded, a huge grin across his face, and hopped out of the carriage onto the bustling street below.

Deep within the High Czenoble Downs a small army of Royal Guards stood stationed in front of a large tunnel, leading to the labyrinthine underbelly of High Czenoble. An investigation of the Rosengard incident had led to speculation that The Starks had entered the estate from below, but few were aware that these same tunnels were The Dynasts’ primary form of transportation. A pair of heavily armored guards appeared from the darkness of the passage, enveloping the three Dynast heirs. Each were dressed in their finest, eagerly awaiting their day at the races.

“Good work men,” Primas Generous said as he motioned for the large group to separate, “You have each been informed of your station. Under no circumstances are you to leave your post.”

The fleet of guards saluted as they dispersed, leaving behind only a handful of bodyguards with the royals.

Princess Augustine removed a small mirror from her handbag and began to examine herself carefully, “What an exciting day! It has been much too long since we’ve joined the public for an event like this.”

“Too true,” Juvenous said with a nod, “And even longer since I’ve gambled alongside them. I only hope I brought enough Crownes...”

Primas Generous grimaced, “Both of you need to stop being so childish. We are only here to ease any suspicion of our father’s health. If Czenovia knew their King was on his deathbed they would find little reason to celebrate.”

“We must remain in good spirits. After all, father has pulled through much worse,” Juvenous replied, “Besides, was it not you, brother, who extended a personal invitation to Lady Bavaria this very morning?”

“She is a brilliant diplomat and a fascinating woman. Were it not for her political skill, I fear Czenovia would already be at war with both Anova and the alliance of the Old Globe.”

“She would make a fine wife, Primas. I only hope you can get some time with her today.”

“She will be a great wife,” Primas said confidently, “And an even greater queen.”

The trio let out a strained laugh as Primas, Juvenous, and their guards left the darkness and made their way towards the upper levels of the grandstands. Princess Augustine waited behind in the tunnel for a moment, listening carefully as two familiar figures approached her from behind. She turned around, only to discover Donner and Blair Stark standing before her.

"Your Majesty..." Donner and Blair said with a hint of sarcasm in their voices.

"There you are. Do you both understand your assignment?"

"Yes, your Majesty."

"Then be off, and don't get caught," Augustine commanded, "There is much work to be done, and so little time before the races begin..."
Alecia had figured that Fauntleroy was eager to get out of the Eshe Rehema Medical Center but of all things she had not expected to see him, with his left arm in a sling, along with Charles helping him to down the corridor in an attempt to leave the hospital. That little...

"Fauntleroy Almagest!" She called out in ringing tones, causing him to cringe and turn to look at her, his look one of guilt and chagrin over having actually been caught. She glared first at Fauntleroy and then at Charles who looked guilty as well, he opened his mouth to explain but she hushed him.

"I don't want to hear excuses from either one of you. I checked your chart this morning uncle and you are not scheduled to be released before tomorrow morning at the earliest." She moved to direct them back to his room.

"I'm not trying to escape Alecia dear, I'm merely heading over to the Chimera Races to keep up with my interests in that affair." He gave her what he probably thought was a pleading look. "Can't I at least attend the races? Charles was kind enough to offer to keep an eye on me."

"I what?" Charles said in confusion before quickly hushing up, causing Alecia to roll her eyes at the obvious lie.

"There you are Alecia," It was Alexander. "And here I thought you would be here a little longer uncle. Good to see you up and about."

"He's not up and about." Alecia said flatly, her eyes narrowing. "He's heading back to his room where he belongs."

"Alexander, don't you think getting out for a little bit would help?" Fauntleroy asked him, causing Alexander to wonder what was going on.

"Maybe it's not a bad idea." Alexander finally agreed, hastily explaining when Alecia shot a glance at him as well. "We're going there ourselves and if you feel he could handle a short time there, it would be good for him, don't you think?"

Alecia looked at the three of them and then sighed at their hopeful expressions, especially Fauntleroy's. With a sigh she gave in. "Fine, wait here while I go and make the arrangements, and you," She glared at Fauntleroy, "Go and sit down and stay put." She took off down the corridor to head for the main desk for the patients in that section of the hospital.

As soon as she was gone Fauntleroy started to take off again only to have Alexander shake his head. "Don't make me stop you as well. There's no way I'm going to tell Alecia that I stood by and simply let you take off."

"I suppose you're right," Fauntleroy agreed as he went over to take a seat. "Go and make the arrangements for a carriage Charles."

"Uh... Sure." Charles hastily took off down the corridor towards the main entrance to the Eshe Rehema.

"I don't suppose I could convince you to tell her I don't need to come back?" Fauntleroy looked oddly hopeful.

Alexander just laughed. "Are you kidding? I don't know anything about potionism and there's no way I'm going to try and tell Alecia how to do her job." He grinned at Fauntleroy, "You're just going to have to accept her fussing over you for a few days. After all, I understand that you're lucky the bullet didn't hit you lower. Just as I understand her quick treatment kept the blood loss down. Otherwise, you wouldn't even have the strength to attempt to escape."

What Fauntleroy would have said next was lost as both of them noticed that Alecia was returning, pushing along what appeared to be an elaborate chair on wheels. Something that had Fauntleroy groaning out loud a bit as she approached them.

Gadget didn't get to walk alone for long until he heard a familiar deep voice shout from behind him.

"Gadget! Wait!"

Gadget clutched his hands into fists and hurried his pace. Half of him wanted to stop and rush into Vincent's arms, but the other, more persistent half, wanted Vincent to proof that the man really cared for him.

But Vincent caught up with him fast enough. "Gadget, for goodness sake, just wait! Why did you leave on your own like that?"

Gadget just pouted, refusing to look Vincent in to the eyes. "Look, I was just caught up with work, the RPG have their hands full because of those Underdogs. I'm the Assistant Commander, I have duties to fill, Gadget!"

Then the man seized him to a tight hold and kissed his hair - right there in public. "I promise I will make up everything to you tonight. Now let's go back before these good people's eyes drop off."

By now Gadget was smiling. The feeling of unbreakable security and comfort rushed back to his heart.

"I'm sorry, Vince", Gadget mumbled as Vincent led him back towards his house.

Vincent just smiled and messed up Gadget's hair like was his habit.

Unfortunately the good sensation didn't last long, for the sinister headache returned unexpectedly. Gadget realized that he hadn't gotten an injection since before the memorial service.

"Vince... I need... Macey", Gadget whispered. Vincent instantly recognized what was going on, so he supported Gadget until they reached his steamcar. Quickly he drove across the city to Rosengard. Gadget was moaning and sweating in the backseat. His skin emitted the eerie glow again.

When they finally got there, the servants told that everyone had left to their businesses already.

"Let's go, dear", Vincent urged. "We could still catch up with Macey if we hurry."

But Gadget shook his head. "I don't think... we need Macey... afterall. Just... follow me."

Gadget and Vincent descended to the cellar which was still covered in dust, past a few servants who were scrubbing the floor and the walls, and into Macey's laboratory, which was luckily far away from where the explosion had occurred.

Gadget sat on the bed and rolled up his sleeve. Then he pointed to the syringes in the cabinet across the room.

"Are you serious?" Vincent asked incredulously. "I can't stick a needle into you, darling!"

"You have to!" Gadget demanded, his green eyes flaring. His skin was starting to turn transparent. "I can't control it! Not... yet."

Vincent gave up and took a syringe from the cabinet. "I do hope Ella and Eva find the cure for you soon. I just can't bear to see you like that..."

With shaking arms, Vincent released the ominous green liquid into Gadget's veins. Gadget fell on his back to the bed, and the pain slowly subsided.

"Oh golly, what will Macey say when she finds out we've been here on our own?" Gadget asked suddenly, his eyes still closed. Vincent laughed at the thought, and Gadget joined him.

As soon as Gadget had restored his condition, the lovers snuck out of the laboratory.

Victoria was impatient for the others to arrive and for the races to start. It was hard to not be excited, it was after all her first time to attend the Chimera Cup. The place was packed with spectators and dozens and dozens of colorfully dressed merchants selling all sorts of fun goods for those who were attending. Victoria had already picked up matching charms with feathers from a Chimera, intending to give one to Alexander and Alecia and one for Harrison as well.

She carefully tucked them into her little purse she brought with her and turned to head back to where Macey and Eva were situated in the Almagest box, chatting with some wealthy spectators. Victoria was half-way back to where they were sitting when she spied the Head Master of Chaos, Lector Moebius. With a smirk she altered her path so that she would accidentally bump into him as if on accident. Something that once she did, she smiled sweetly and apologized.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there." Victoria had already opened up the lid of the little bottle and dumped it into his pocket, it had been a simple matter to make it look like she had merely grasped his clothing briefly upon running into him.

"That's quite alright Victoria Ann." Moebius said as if he was grandly forgiving her. "Just remember that a lady always pays attention to her surroundings. You wouldn't want others to think that you are ill mannered now would you?"

"Of course not Head Master." Victoria curtsied. "I must hurry back so the others don't worry about me." She barely managed to hide yet another snicker when she noticed that the oil was already seeping through the cloth of his pocket, showing up like a dark stain on his pristine suit.

It was all she could do to not run, least the Head Master think something was amiss, but as soon as she got back to where Macey and Eva was she couldn't help but snicker out loud a bit.

"What's so funny?" Eva asked and then smiled when a commotion further back where Victoria had just come from caught her eyes. "Never mind." She finished as she stifled a laugh of her own.

"Ah Victoria, how wonderful of you to stay close and not wander off very far." Macey said as her own mouth curled up in a half smile, causing Victoria to giggle a bit.

She turned around and glanced to see that a number of patrons were clearly pulling back from the Head Master of Chaos, wrinkling their noses in distaste. Just as it was clear that Lector Moebius had no idea what was going on. That is until he accidentally brushed his hand against his pocket and got some of the oil on his hand.

Victoria just turned her attention back to the guests who were talking to Macey and Eva. Making sure he didn't catch her looking in his direction. Even if Macey said she'd lie for her, it would be more fun if the Head Master didn't figure it out, after all, her and the students had quite a few things in store for that fool.

Once things had settled down a tiny bit and the group had finally made it to the Races, Alexander couldn't help but smile a little to see so many of them gathered together for the Chimera Cup. The only thing that would put a damper on things would be when Lady Bavaria showed up. If only they could be so lucky and have her avoid them altogether, but it was something he was sure was a hopeless wish. After the events surrounding Leonhart's untimely death, in his opinion, diplomat or not, she was turning out to be a utter disappointment. Even if he didn't always get along or fit in with the other family members of the Almagest's, none of them seemed to be as petty as she was turning out to be.

Even those who didn't really care for Dame Anna had the good sense to not object to Catherine choosing to invite her along or to her obvious support of Henry who was participating in the races, though his turn to race wouldn't come until much later. It was too early for the finalists and for now the crowd was enjoying the fun of watching all the preliminary races. Something that though it wasn't really Alexander's thing, he still enjoyed watching. It was his first time to see it as well since attending the races wasn't something he would have done in the past.

"Careful Victoria!" Fonty was telling her as she talked excitedly about the races, waving her arms about and nearly hitting his left arm that was still in a sling.

"Sorry Uncle Fonty!" She giggled as she moved so she was in a seat on his right side instead, "I keep forgetting that you're hurt since I figured Alecia would tie you to your bed to keep you from escaping!"

"Victoria Ann! I would never!" Alecia started to protest and then laugh when Alexander poked her gently in the side.

"Sure you would," Eva teased from where she was standing before she turned back to the gentleman she was talking with.

"All right! All right!" Alecia finally gave in. "You win! But it's only because he needs to rest so he can get better!"

Alexander smiled at her and then frowned a bit when he noticed that Dame Anna was looking rather glum, even with Catherine sitting next to her and chatting brightly. He got up and moved over to join the two for a moment.

"Are you not feeling well?"

"Oh no! I'm fine Alexander. It's kind of you to ask, but really, I'm fine." Dame Anna looked down at her hands. "It's just that I'm not sure this is a good idea."

"Nonsense dear," Catherine interjected with a wave of her hand. "I simply won't hear it anymore. I know my brother well enough to know that he would feel the same."

"You should listen to her Dame Anna," Alexander advised. "If anyone is not welcome here, I assure you, it is not you." He turned at the sound of Alecia calling his name. "If you'll excuse me ladies."

Alexander turned to go and see what Alecia wanted, wondering what would happen in the end. Lately it seemed like every time they turned around, something else came up and on some level, the objection to Dame Anna made no sense to him. But then an issue of an illegitimate child wasn't as pressing in New Czenoble as it was among the wealthy. That sort of thing was common enough that most people just ignored it. They were too busy making ends meet to squabble over things like that.

Things like that... -There's no medical treatment for the less fortunate, there's starvation and deplorable conditions everywhere you turn in that pathetic excuse for a city!- Grant's words flashed though his mind, reminding him that for most of the citizens there, putting food on the table came before petty squabbles over someone's legitimacy. He shoved the thought aside.

"Why so serious Alexander?" Macey asked him when he got to where the two were standing.

"I was thinking about what happened with the bomb the other night." He answered truthfully, though he did not elaborate as to what he was thinking about. He wasn't about to tell either one of them what his superior officer had said.

Alecia smiled and took his arm in hers. "Lets go and get something to eat, I'm starving and for some reason the food smells really good."

Alexander just let her steer him towards one of the closest vendors, wondering if Alecia really was sick. Since when did she like the greasy street food that the vendors sold at a place like this? Unlike the park, this kind of fare had never appealed to her. Or to him either, it had a way of coming back later and making you wish you had never touched the stuff.

Lector Moebius swept by the Almagest box, chatting animatedly with some female figure from the Midorah house, when Macey's well trained nose caught a whiff of something foul. She brought out her omnipresent handkerchief and pressed it to her face, passing a spare to Victoria Ann, who had taken up a seat to her left.

"Oh for the love of- It smells like something died under the stairs!"

"We were SO proud of it when we made it too. But you're right... ....ugh. It's so awful!"

Macey found herself nearly gagging at the remarkably rancid stench, and turned her head in a vain attempt to find something sweeter smelling. A passing vendor made his way up the aisle with a basket of roses and assorted bunches of flowers and Macey leaned over to Victoria. She pressed a silver piece into her hand and pointed at the vendor. The girl immediately leapt up and pranced right over, returning a few moments later with two dozen roses of the deepest red. So red they almost looked black.

"Ooooh, aren't these just beautiful Macey!?"

"Gorgeous. And definitely better smelling than anything else we'll find here today."

She plucked a few roses from the bunch and pulled them carefully through Victoria's hair, pinching off the stems carefully. The girl giggled and clapped her hands when Macey pulled out a small mirror to show her the effect.

Things were just settling down, Macey's olfactory nerves recovering from the dreadful assault, when Alecia returned with her husband from the opposite direction. Alexander immediately fell into discussion with Fonty about the shooting, while Alecia sat down next to Macey at her right and unwrapped the paper around a pack of chips. To Macey's surprise, she tucked in with some gusto, and she felt the beginnings of understanding pricking the back of her mind. She sat down and waited for Alecia to finish before speaking in a very low voice.

"Alecia darling. ...are you feeling alright?"

"Never better Auntie. Why do you ask?"

"When was the last time you had that time of the month?"

"Ummmmmm... You know I don't remember."

In an entirely appropriate gesture, Macey arched one eyebrow incredulously, then turned back to watch the crowd, the roses in her arms shaking slightly in the breeze.

It was turning out to be such a beautiful day in High Cznoble and it was with great interest that both spectators and reporters alike were hovering around where the carriages of the most wealthy were arriving to drop off their passengers. A hush fell on the crowd when it became apparent that one of the most famous and wealthiest of widows had finally arrived, the lavishly done carriage was unmistakable as it pulled up close to the entrance to the personal box of the Dynast.

Reporters readied their camera's as servants hurried off to inform the heirs to the Dynast of the expected arrival of Lady Bavaria. A moment later and the door to the carriage was opened and with a swirl of silk Bavaria herself stepped out. Dressed in shades of red in a revealing and expensive gown. She moved in a graceful manner that practically posed for the reporters taking pictures.

She was almost to the entrance to the Dynast Marquee when Princess Augustine, Primas Generous and Juvenus Courageous came out to greet her. Resulting in so many camera flashes going off that it was a wonder the group wasn't blinded.

"So very good of you to come Lady Bavaria," Primas Generous smiled. "And I must say dear you look wonderful."

"You're too kind. Thank you for the wonderful invitation Primas Generous." Bavaria smiled as she moved to continue into the Marquee with the others. It was at that moment that yet another commotion was caused by the arrival of a second carriage, this time it was the Almagest's.

"Ah Daedalus," Bavaria said with a smirk once she turned to see him along with his family. "How wonderful to see that you are well enough to attend the Chimera Cup."

"Oh most definitely," Princess Augustine said ever so sweetly. "Do keep an eye on your father Nellie, I know how much you care for him."

"Thank you princess." Nellie replied.

"You and I need to have a chat Bavaria," Daedalus looked at the trio, his expression almost flat. "After the Chimera Cup of course."

"Quite," Juvenus Courageous chimed in and then wrinkled his nose a bit. "What in the world is that smell?"

The group turned to see the Head Master of Chaos timidly approaching the group, obviously intent on inserting himself into the conversation. Something that had Harrison rolling his eyes.

"What a dork." Harrison complained under his breath causing Dawlish to poke him in the side.

"Not here Harrison." He said only loud enough for him to hear.

"Harrison." Harriet said under her breath in a warning tone, causing him to hush.

"Ah, your highness..." Lector Moebius started to say only to be cut off as Princess Augustine backed away a bit and covered her mouth and nose with a handkerchief.

"Good grief! Don't you dare come any closer. What in the world have you been getting into?" She made shooing motions. "Don't come back until you've taken a bath. Better yet, don't come back at all." She motioned to a servant who immediately moved to usher the Head Master away from the group.

With a sigh of relief Princess Augustine removed the handkerchief once the rancid smell had faded. "Come! I need something to drink after that." She glanced at the Almagest's who were still there. "Do enjoy the races, I know I will." And with that the group turned and entered the Dynast Marquee while the others moved to enter the other Marquee where the others would be waiting.

It had been quite some time since Harrison had seen so many of the family together, chatting like mad things and enjoying themselves. Or rather the events in the last week made it seem like forever and though he tried not to, he couldn't help but smile a bit as the group entered the box where the others were.

"Oh good! Now Victoria can finally talk someone else's ears off." Fauntleroy said upon noticing that the others had arrived.

"Hey!" Victoria objected before with a squeal she ran to give Daedalus a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay Uncle Daedalus."

"Thank you Victoria," Daedalus said after she let go and went back to the front of the box to keep an eye on the current race.

"Daedalus," Catherine smiled as she moved to hug her brother once Victoria had moved. "I'm so pleased to see you up dear." She turned to Harriet. "And I'm thrilled to see you as well dear, why don't you come and take a seat?"

"I'd love to." Harriet said after giving Daedalus's arm a gentle squeeze.

"It's turning out to be a wonderful day, isn't it Uncle?" Alecia asked when Daedalus finally took a seat, close to where she was sitting.

"In more ways than one dear," Macey spoke up, causing Alecia to look slightly puzzled as to what she could mean.

Daedalus just smiled pleasantly as he took notice of Dawlish and Nellie finding a spot over where Eva was and launching in a heated discussion about the different types of Chimeras and which one they thought would win.

"No, no, no!" Eva was saying as she got off on a tangent about one aspect in Chimera's being superior over another.

"I hope you don't mind if I steal Alecia from all of you?" Alexander asked as he came over and extended his hand to help her stand up.

"Not at all," Macey said kindly before the two left to head for one of the many flower vendors, smiling at the thought that he was likely taking her over to pick out one of the many pin on bouquets being sold.

"Dad!" Harrison who had been down at the front of the box came rushing back up to where Daedalus was sitting. "You should come sit down front!" He tugged a bit on his sleeve and then stopped, and then smiled when Daedalus got up and followed him down to the front row seats.
Although Daedalus couldn't be classed as a true fan of Chimaera racing, in that he did not religiously follow the sport as other members of the family did, he certainly did enjoy watching it. Absentmindedly he rubbed the back of his head before wincing slightly, truth be told, he had probably come out of hospital too early. But, that didn?t matter, he was alive, and here with his family on a day out, that alone made him feel well enough.

?Dad ! Come on, I?ve got the seats.?

Harrison was pointing vigorously at the nearest seats to the edge of the circuit. He smiled brightly at his youngest son before waving to his other two children and gesturing for them to follow him. Dwalish seemed hesitant to break up his argument with Eva, bur Nellie grabbed her older brother?s arm and dragged him down the flight of steps laughing.

?We?ll finish this later Eva.

Her cousin rolled her eyes in mock irritation in response.

Though Eva was six years younger than Nellie, they had been very close as children, her twin cousins practically adoring the ground she walked on. Though he likely favoured his sons with his time more than her, a father?s worst habit, she had made him very, very proud of her.

?Come on dad, it doesn?t look as if Harrison is going to wait much longer.?

Sighing amusedly, he watched as Harrison had taken his seat in the centre right of the four, and was staring back up at his other family members expectantly. As she had done with her elder brother, Nellie caught hold of her father and began pulling him forwards. After a few moments, they were all seated together, Harrison on his father?s right with Dwalish next to him and Nellie on Daedalus? left.

?It was nice of the Princess to give you some free time sis, it?s been ages since I?ve seen you.?

Nellie ruffled Harrison?s hair lovingly and smiled.

?Yes, Princess Augustine is a wonderful person, I?m very lucky to be her bodyguard.?

Relaxing back into her seat, in a posture Daedalus couldn?t say was particularly lady-like, but certainly military oriented.

?So Harry, still interested in joining the Guard ??

Harrison frowned at the use of his pet-name, only Nellie and his mother continued to use it.

?Yeah, dad said he was going to give me some private tutoring to help me.?

?Oh ??

The comment came from Harrison?s right, as Dwalish leaned in to take part in the conversation.

?What do you mean by ?oh? Dwalish ??

A slight smile broke over his brother?s lips.

?Nothing.?

Scowling, the younger brother watched as Daedalus chuckled and Nellie grinned at him.

?What ??

?You?ve never had father?s training before have you ??

It was Nellie who ventured the question.

?No...?

?You?ll get the joke after your first lesson.?

?Dad, what?re they talking about ??

Daedalus merely raised his eyebrows in mock surprise.

?I?m sure I don?t know Harrison. I?ve always considered myself a good teacher?
The Chimaera Circuit was perhaps the ultimate show of Czenovia's wealth. Not only did much of the Dynast family attend, but so too did the vast majority of Czenovia's wealthy elite.

The upper mezzanine contained the various private marquees. This year, the Achard Marquee sat right next to the Dynast Marquee. Even though the two were essentially separate, there was no barrier; guests were able to come and go as they pleased. This was perhaps the only dampener on the evening for some in the Almagest family - at least, for those who were not fond of the Dynasts.

This was the very first year that a foreigner had paid for a private Marquee. Generally, foreign guests - even wealthy ones - were relegated to the lower decks on the interior of the Circuit.

In truth, the Chimaera Cup - the largest event on the racing calendar - was primarily for show. The nations of the Old Globe were invited to attend, but without question, it was only Czenovian Chimaera who won the Cup each year. In fact, in the Cup's 80 year history, Czenovia had won 76 times.

This was partially because most of the Chimaera entered on behalf of Czenovia belonged to the Dynast family. The Dynasts could afford to enter more and better Chimaera than anyone else. The official rules also restricted foreign nations from entering more than three participants.

Also there was the occasional rumor about a Chimaera having an "accident" just before the race. Most Czenovians knew what this meant; only the most die-hard Dynast supporters denied the hushed accusations.

Nevertheless, various breeders from across the Old Globe continued to participate. For them, the race was a matter of prestige. It was also an opportunity to promote their nation and its wares.

Gustave had arrived at the races earlier in the afternoon, to inspect his treasured Chimaera. This year he had brought four, even though he was only allowed to enter three. He paid particular attention to this last Chimaera; he had special plans for it.

During the afternoon, Gustave's various staff had filed into the Marquee. Several of them had already begun mixing with those Almagests who had already arrived; much to the annoyance of the Dynasts, who could hardly believe that "the staff" were allowed to sit with the privileged.

Vincent sat down close to the front of the Achard Marquee. From this vantage point, he could see the entire Circuit.

The center of the Circuit contained two distinct levels. On the lower “ground level” was a wide track with no discernable markings on it. Above it, several large rings floated in mid-air. The rings above mirrored the lower track’s configuration.

Gadget leaned over to Vincent. ‘I’ve never been to a Chimaera race before. How do they know who wins? The track looks awfully complicated to me.’

The Chimaera tracks resembled a tangled knot of wide path, which, in some cases, criss-crossed (Gadget wondered how passing Chimaera travelling at high speed could possibly avoid running into each other).

‘Well, the Cup actually consists of two simultaneous races,’ said Vincent as he pointed to the upper and lower tracks. ‘Chimaera are divided into two main groups; flying and non-flying. Flying Chimaera use the upper track and non-flying Chimaera use the lower track.’

‘At the same time?’ Gadget’s eyes widened.

Vincent nodded calmly. ‘Yes. The non-flying Chimaera are divided into two sub-classes; one for those with two legs and another for those with four. But the two tracks are used at the same time.’

Vincent pointed to the lower track. ‘There are only three laps. But coming first is not the only concern a Chimaera jockey has.’

Gadget raised an eyebrow. He suspected there was going to be some catch. ‘Oh?’

‘Well, how can I put it…there are few rules in Chimaera racing. Coming first is one thing, but surviving is something else. A number of famous jockeys have either died or been badly injured on the track.’

Gadget gasped. ‘What?! Why would anyone race without rules?’

‘I suppose people find it more entertaining,’ said Vincent with a shrug. ‘Most jockeys are pretty good, but there are some bad apples in the pack. For instance, there’s a jockey called Hugo Black. Have you ever heard of him?’

For a moment Gadget paused, but then he nodded slowly. ‘I think so, actually. Even in New Czenoble I’ve seen reports in the papers about him.’

‘Well, he seems to have been awfully close to some of the jockeys who have died in recent years. When you watch a race, there is so much activity that it’s hard to see exactly what is happening. We usually rely on the Circuit Announcer to keep us informed. Unfortunately he often refers to incidents on the track as “awful accidents”.’

‘I suppose he wouldn’t dare say anything negative about Black, if what you’re saying is true,’ commented Gadget as he tried to get a better look at the track over the railing.

‘Right,’ said Vincent. ‘It helps that Hugo Black is the Dynast King’s number one jockey. He wins nearly every year.’

Gadget was surprised at exactly how much he did not know. The politics of aristocratic life sometimes seemed far too complex.

‘So,’ sighed Gadget. ‘What about the upper track?’

‘Ah, well, as you can see the upper track pretty much mirrors the lower track. But the rules are different. Not only do you have to win, but you have to pass through those floating rings. If you miss three rings within the same lap, you are automatically disqualified.’

‘Seems easy enough,’ said Gadget casually.

‘Well, there are often about twenty flying Chimaera in one race. Those rings aren’t very big. Can you imagine all twenty trying to race for the same ring at once? That’s when things get nasty.’

Gadget shook his head. ‘If Czenovia always cheats, why do the other countries bother?’

Vincent shrugged. ‘I don’t know. This is the biggest race in the world though, so I suppose Chimaera enthusiasts still love coming here. I personally think most of them have a death wish…’

Just as Vincent finished his sentence, he heard a loud cheer coming from behind him. All of the Almagests were standing and facing the rear of the Marquee.

Vincent and Gadget stood up and looked over the shoulders in front of them.

The rear of the Marquee contained a large area that was roped off. A strange figure was standing behind the rope with his arms in the air. Vincent squinted to try to get a better look.

It was a very tall, broad-shouldered man. He was dressed entirely in black. His shoulders carried large emblems with silver writing on them; it was the logo of the Chimaera Circuit. As the Almagests fell quiet, Vincent heard the man’s raspy deep voice.

‘Welcome to the Circuit, everyone. I have been visiting each of the Marquees and yours is lucky last.’

Vincent heard several quiet grumbles in the crowd. The man looked slightly awkward; perhaps he, like the Dynasts, was not fond of foreigners.

‘My name is Thames Dreadnaught. I am here to officially announce the arrival of Mister Gustave Achard.’

And with that, Gustave appeared from behind a large curtain nearby. The Almagests clapped, which seemed to bother Thames – it was as if the clapping were hurting his ears.

‘Welcome everyone,’ said Gustave as grinned broadly at the family. ‘I am so pleased to have you all here tonight. I have only met some of you before and I wish that I were meeting the rest of you under more pleasant circumstances.’

Gustave paused for a moment, as several family members shuffled in their spots.

‘I decided to bring all of you a present, on behalf of myself and the entire Achard family.’

Gustave glanced at Catherine, who was standing near the front of the crowd. She looked particularly glamorous tonight, Vincent thought.

Catherine took the queue and walked over to Gustave. She held out a gloved hand, which he kissed while he bowed. ‘My lady,’ he said with a smile.

‘Thank you for inviting us,’ said Catherine, ‘but this lavish Marquee is surely enough of a gift for our family. You have brought us together in a time of great difficulty…’

Catherine paused for a moment to regain her composure. The memories of recent events were still more than clear in her mind.

Gustave waved a gloved hand. ‘No, really, I insist. I wanted to give you something very special, something to brighten all of you up when times become difficult.’

Gustave snapped his gloved fingers and the curtain behind him rolled open. The entire crowd gasped.

There, standing just near Gustave, was what looked rather like a large bird. At least, it somewhat resembled a bird; the creature was almost twice as tall as Gustave and had four legs. Its feet looked like lion’s paws, yet the entire animal was covered in rich golden feathers. It had longer, sharper feathers around its face and large, majestic eyes. A leather saddle sat upon its back and its enormous wings were folded at its sides.

Catherine covered her mouth with a gloved hand. ‘Oh my,’ was all she uttered. ‘Gustave! This is a racing Chimaera, isn’t it?’

Gustave smiled. ‘Yes, it is actually a purebred; it is a native Anovan Griffon. The golden feathers are especially rare.’

Gustave walked over to the Chimaera and ran his hand through its thick plumage. It closed its eyes and cooed airily.

‘Good girl,’ he said softly. ‘Her name is Lucy, but you can give her a new name if you like. I thought perhaps we could organize to build a stable for her at Rosengard.’

Vincent glanced at the other Almagests. Most were apparently in shock. Vincent himself had seen several Chimaera races before, but had never laid his eyes on such a beautiful creature.

Even Daedalus, who was not particularly a Chimaera fan, seemed to be in a trance.

Catherine could not hold her emotions in any longer. She leapt forward and wrapped her arms around Gustave.

‘You don’t know what this means to us!’ she exclaimed. ‘Thank you so much!’

Gustave embraced Catherine warmly. ‘My pleasure, Lady Catherine. I hope Lucy will bring all of you happiness during the dark hours ahead.’

There was something oddly prophetic about Gustave’s comment, but nobody seemed to notice.

Gustave seemed to spy Victoria Ann in the crowd. ‘Oh! I must not have been back for such a long time, I do not believe I have ever met this young lady.’

Victoria Ann blushed and held onto her mother. Beatriste smiled. ‘This is Victoria Ann. She’s a very lucky to be here tonight – this is her first ever Cup.’

Gustave gasped. He hopped over to Victoria Ann and knelt before her. ‘Really? This is your first cup?’

‘Yes,’ she said shyly.

‘Ahh!’ Gustave pointed to Lucy. ‘Perhaps you’d like to try sitting on her back? She loves children. I’m sure she’d let you ride her, if you like.’

Victoria Ann looked up at her mother, her eyes wide with excitement.

Beatriste sighed. ‘I suppose you can sit on the saddle, but be careful! I don’t want you to become a Chimaera jockey overnight.’

Gustave laughed and held out his hand. ‘Shall we? I’ll show you how to steer, just in case you ever need to know.’ He winked at Victoria Ann, who giggled excitedly.

As the pair headed over to Lucy hand-in-hand, Gustave called out to the other Almagests. ‘The race is due to start shortly, so please, eat, drink and be merry! Tonight nothing else matters – I want everyone to have fun!’

The Almagests cheered loudly at this.

‘Oh, Vincent!’ Catherine called to him from nearby. ‘Please thank your cousin again for his precious gift. We have never received anything like this.’

‘Of course,’ said Vincent.

‘I just hope…’ Catherine looked around at the Dynast Marquee. ‘I just hope that Lady Bavaria does not have a problem with Lucy being on the premises.’

‘Surely she wouldn’t deny everyone such a gift?’ asked Vincent. ‘I can’t imagine she’s that cold-hearted. Just look at little Victoria Ann; she’s already in love with Lucy!’

Catherine looked at Victoria Ann, who was leaning against the giant Chimaera’s neck; she was in the middle of a deep embrace. Apparently she’d decided that Lucy would be staying around for a while yet.

‘Well,’ Catherine sighed. ‘With Bavaria, you just never know.’

"Ah young love. Tis a grand thing."

Lady Catharine turned to the scent of roses and the sight of Macey leaning over slightly to get a better view. Victoria Ann was currently nuzzling Lucy, who had bent down to get a better view of the small and sweet smelling thing currently petting her enormous cheek feathers.

"Absolutely. I can't imagine why Lady Bavaria wouldn't want such a beautiful beast on the grounds."

"Simple dear Aunt. She can't stand to be in the presence of anything more beautiful than she."

Macey had lowered her voice so only Lady Catharine and perhaps Vincent could hear. The two exchanged amused glances, but refrained from laughing for the appearance of things. With a little flick of her hand, she passed a rose to her Aunt, who immediately tucked it into the long flare at the brim of her hat, creating a remarkably antique and coquettish look. Vincent leaned over to catch Macey's attention.

"Perhaps you should take a better look at Lucy yourself. I'm sure Gustave would like a chance to brag about his latest gift to the family."

"Naturally. From what I recall, it's getting him to take a quick break to breathe that's the trick."

Vincent chuckled and gestured to Victoria Ann, who was now apparently being lecture on the various parts of Chimera anatomy. With delicate steps, Macey moved across the balcony, lifting the hem of her skirt with her right hand, keeping her destination in sight. Part of her was pleased with seeing Gustave again, and another part was wondering exactly why. Aside from the fact that he was a foreigner, and thus more interesting than all the other men surrounding her, and he looked nothing like Vincent but- Macey shook her head just once to cut off that particular train of logic; if logic was even the word for that. Once she'd made it across the way, she came up behind Victoria Ann just in time to hear her squeal something that sounded both intelligent and juvenile at the same time.

Gustave turned as the sound of a swishing skirt reached his ears and found Macey smiling over at him rather enigmatically. He immediately bowed and she curtsied, Victoria Ann beaming up at them both. With practiced movements, he reached for her hand and kissed it, murmuring.

"Macey Ellen, you look as pretty as a picture with those exquisite roses and sparkling diamond-like eyes-"

"Oh come now Gustave, no need to flatter me to death. Save it for those who really really need to hear it."

"You wound me so deeply."

He feigned an injured look, which was accompanied by the sounds of light girlish laughter from both Macey and Victoria Ann. Macey handed the roses over to Victoria Ann for just a moment, while she held out a palm to Lucy, having some experience with Chimaeras, just enough to know what they liked and what they'd instantly hate. Lucy inhaled deeply with a light whistling sound, then exhaled in a brief burst and burbled lightly with contentment. Pleased, Macey stroked the side of her neck, and down to her powerfully built flanks. Victoria clapped her hands and cheered.

"Yay! She likes you too!"

"I'd hope so. With any luck, Lucy'll find out that you don't like Bavaria and peck her eyes out."

Macey spoke in a conspiratorial 'just us girls' tone, which Gustave immediately picked up on. Victoria handed back the roses all at once and immediately began petitioning Gustave for a chance to ride.

The stables were an absolute blaze of activity, with jockeys and hands running every which way, and chimaeras becoming increasingly nervous with the excitement and tension building in the air. Even from inside this smaller stable Morphia could clearly hear the gathering volume of the crowds outside as more people entered the already-packed stands of the Circuit. Though this was hardly the first Cup she had participated in, Morphia still couldn?t completely quell the nervousness that rose in her stomach as she peeked out the side of the door as some riders passed by. A single glimpse told her that this was probably the largest Cup that had been held thus far ? she could hardly believe how packed the stands were.

?Morphia, could I speak with you??

She turned to see Henry standing beside her. Instantly she bit her lip, but tried to put a polite expression on her face, ?Hello Henry. Actually, I was about to go check on something??

She made to walk away, but Henry hooked his hand lightly on her arm, ?Please Morphia, it?ll only take a minute.?

?Fine. What do you want??

?Look Morphia, I wanted to apologize for the other night. I didn?t get a chance to speak with you before we departed, but I just wanted to let you know I?m sorry for being so distracted during the dinner. It was extremely generous of you to invite me as your escort, and I failed to behave appropriately. Will you forgive me??

Morphia shook her head a little, ?Really Henry, it wasn?t a big deal. I?m fine, although I do thank you for the gracious apology. Now I really must be getting back to Fervus, if there?s nothing else.?

?Wait,? he said, putting his hands on her shoulders, ?I hope, despite everything, that we?ll still be friends. After all, even if you try to avoid me, we?ll meet in the Circuit eventually.?

She found herself getting a little pink, ?Whatever gave you the idea that I would try and avoid you? I?m not afraid, if that?s what you?re asking, and I have nothing to be embarrassed about.?

?Good. Oh, I owe you this from the other night,? Henry replied, and then swooped in for a quick kiss before Morphia could resist.
She had no time to even register the kiss before Henry walked away, a mischievous grin on his face as he gave her a small wave and disappeared into one of the stables.

Oh dear, was the first thought. Then getting a strange feeling down her spine, she turned quickly, only to meet Bavaria?s eyes even from so far across the Circuit.
Oh god, she?s going to kill me, was the second thought.
Even though the distance between them spanned the width of the entire track, Morphia knew immediately that Bavaria had seen the entire thing, and now she blushed furiously. She felt Bavaria?s anger in the slow smile that came to her older sister?s lips; the woman looked perfect sitting with the Dynasts, as if these past days hadn?t happened at all. But Morphia knew better ? once they returned to Thorinine the full force of her sister?s (and probably father?s) anger would crash down upon her, along with the added stress, frustration, and fatigue that the family was feeling. Added to the fact that Jack hadn't been seen by anyone since that chaotic night, tensions in the Deacons were running extremely high.

Suddenly a voice boomed through the Circuit, accompanied by instruments and percussion. It was Thames Dreadnaught, about to announce the opening ceremony of the Cup.
For now I need to forget about everything and just concentrate, Morphia thought to herself as she broke the tense gaze and rushed back into the stables. There could be no worse time to be so distracted.

Alecia couldn't help but think about what Macey had just said: -"When was the last time you had that time of the month?"- It tugged at her memory and then she had to wonder, considering the other things as well. The fatigue, the headaches... among other things. It can't be... can it? She shook her head as she smiled at Alexander who was pining a little deal of white daisy's to her dress near the collar. I can always run a test... in fact I'll do that tomorrow. And with that she put it out of mind.

"There you go love." He smiled at her when he was done, taking her arm as he lead her back to where the others were. "I don't know why you love daisy's though. Wouldn't you like some roses?"

"No, daisy's are such cheerful things. I never grow tired of looking at them." She smiled again as they made their way back to where the others were, passing through the part that belonged to the Dynast's.

They were almost to the other side when Primas Generous, who had been near the front, drink in hand while observing the races turned around to perhaps get a refill for his now empty glass. Both Alexander and Alecia managed to halt just short of literally running into the Dynast heir.

"Your Highness." Alecia said with a small bow of her head, expecting him to simply move on, after all, unlike other members of her family she had no reason or political connections that would give him a reason to even talk to them. So she couldn't hide her surprise when he did.

"It's Alexander isn't it?"

"Yes your Highness."

"No need to be so formal, we're on the same page here."

"Your Highness?" Alexander was confused as to what he was talking about.

"The Underdogs, those cowardly fools who attempted to destroy Rosengard, I have been charged with ferreting them out so naturally I am aware of your involvement in helping to save Rosengard and her inhabitants from being killed." He gave Alexander a measuring glance. "Just as I'm aware that your name is now on the list of Guard members who are hunting down the missing potionists and doctors."

"Right!"

"I trust you have everything you need to carry out your investigation?" Primas asked him.

Alexander nodded. "I do. I'll be heading down to New Czenoble to follow up on some leads tomorrow."

"Excellent." Primas startled both of them by warmly grasping Alexander shoulder briefly. "Keep up the good work. We'll bring those fools to justice." And with a polite node to Alecia he moved to go and refill his drink.

Both Alexander and Alecia moved to rejoin the others who were paying attention to of all things a chimera? And Victoria Ann was practically hugging the thing while it was nuzzling her in return in an affectionate manner?

The sight was so startling that for a moment Alecia completely forgot about the fact that she needed to take a test and that she wished Alexander didn't need to travel to New Ceznoble for work. What is going on?

Macey Ellen positioned herself on the golden Griffon's leather saddle. She held Victoria Ann tightly. 'Careful, now. We don't want to give your mother a heart attack.'

Victoria Ann put the reigns down. 'Mister Achard,' she said timidly, 'how do I get off?'

Gustave winked. 'Oh, well, there's a trick to it. Just put your hand on the lower part of Lucy's neck - yes, that's it - and click your tongue.'

Victoria Ann's face distorted as she tried to do her best Griffon click. Sure enough, though, Lucy had understood her - she carefully lay down on the ground and lowered her wings.

'Ah, you're an natural!' exclaimed Gustave. 'And look, she put her wing out for you.'

Victoria Ann grinned. 'I won't hurt her, will I?'

Gustave shook his head. 'Oh, no, definitely not. You can walk down her wing, she doesn't mind.'

Victoria Ann stood up shakily and stumbled down Lucy's wing until her feet were planted firmly on the floor. 'Whew!' she wiped her brow. 'I did it!'

Gustave and Macey clapped. 'Excellent,' said Macey, 'looks like you'll be a famous jockey in no time.'

Victoria Ann giggled. She approached Lucy and stroked her neck (to which Lucy responded by cooing quietly and closing her eyes).

'Mister Achard, do you really think I'd be able to ride a Chimaera properly one day?'

Gustave nodded confidently. 'Of course. Very few people have the gift you have - you were able to command Lucy without any trouble on your first time. That's very rare. She must like you! Some people never become proper riders, even after years of practice.'

Gustave ruffled Lucy's feathers. 'I believe that your Chimaera has to like you before you can become a good rider. And clearly Lucy thinks she's found a new best friend.'

Victoria Ann laughed and courtesied. 'Thank you so much for letting me sit on her, Mister Achard. I'm looking forward to bringing her home!'

Gustave nodded. 'My pleasure. You should go and take your seat now, though; the races are going to be starting shortly! All three of my Chimaera are participating in the first race - so I have a lot riding on this one!'

Victoria Ann nodded eagerly and trotted back to her mother.

'Three in the first race? Overkill, no?'

Gustave turned and saw Macey scratching Lucy's chin. He raised an eyebrow. 'Even with three, my jockeys are going to be fighting an uphill battle to beat the Dynast entrants this year.'

Macey nodded. 'I feel for your jockeys. Hugo Black is in the next race. He doesn't much like foreigners.'

Gustave rubbed his chin. 'I didn't know Black was racing tonight. Looks like the Dynasts brought him forward specifically to beat Anova. What a nerve!'

'You don't seem very worried,' said Macey casually.

Gustave simply shrugged. 'I am worried about my jockeys' health, of course. But we have a few surprises of our own this year. A little sprinkling of good Magitechnology ought to help defend against Black.'

Gustave chuckled to himself. It made Macey smile; he had a devious laugh.

'Well,' said Macey, 'I know very little about these races. I've never been very interested.'

She glanced at Gustave out of the corner of her eye.

Gustave approached her and held out a gloved hand. 'Why don't you sit with me tonight, m'lady? I can explain the race as it progresses.'

Not one to reject a gracious offer, Macey gave a faint smile and held out her hand. Gustave took it and let her out to the Marquee's balcony, where the other Almagests were sitting.

From their vantage point, they could see all of the other Marquees, which sat in a semi-circular row around one end of the Circuit.

The Dynast Marquee was on their left. There was another one their right; it was full of people Macey did not recognize. One man was sitting at the center and was surrounded by what looked like several subordinates. He was draped in gold and silk.

'Do you know who they are?' she asked, subtly gesturing to the strangers.

Gustave grinned. 'Oh, yes, I know who they are. They are from the far west - a strange country well beyond the ocean. They're from Al Ahmar.'

'Al Ahmar? I've never heard of it,' said Macey.

'Czenovians never visit. Even Anovans really don't go there,' replied Gustave. 'I have been there twice. Once for a camel race and once for an expedition.'

Macey covered her mouth and giggled. 'A camel race? I don't even remember the last time I saw one of those. I'm sure I saw one in a zoo as a child. Why haven't I heard of Al Ahmar?'

Gustave shrugged. 'I don't know. I personally think that the Dynasts like to pretend it doesn't exist. I'm not sure exactly what their relationship with the country is, but I do know that you never see Ahmaris on our eastern continent.'

'So,' said Macey as they sat down together, 'who is the man sitting at the front? He looks rather important.'

'That,' said Gustave, 'is the Sultan of Al Ahmar. His name is Imran Mahid.'

'Well!' exclaimed Macey,' you certainly are a man of the world. I'm impressed.'

Gustave looked away for a moment. To her surprise, it seemed as though Gustave were actually slightly embarrassed.

'Oh, I just travel. That's all,' he said casually.

Macey smiled. She hadn't felt this interested in someone for a long time. Gustave was wordly, intelligent and kind. And yet he was not set in his ways; Macey found him to be wonderfully childlike in his own way.

Tonight, she thought, would be a memorable night. As it happens, she did not know how true this sentiment really was.

Morphia stumbled across the stable grounds, halfway in a daze, before reaching her favorite mount, the enormous red lizard Fervus. As she approached the beast it extended its’ large purple tongue towards her, instantly recognizing the scent of her rival. The creature let out a low growl, frightening a pair of hired hands nearby.

“Oh Fervus, please!” Morphia said as she climbed onto her saddle, “The last thing I need is criticism from you about my love life.”

The sound of a marching band echoed from the Circuit, instantly sending the stables into a frenzy. Jockeys quickly hopped aboard their mounts, angrily tossing out orders from their assistants. In the distance she could see Henry climbing on top of his enormous featherdragon, and her thoughts began to scatter once again.

“This is no time to lose your head!” a familiar male voice called out from behind, “All of Czenovia is outside of those doors.”

Morphia turned around to discover the Dynast’s favored jockey, Hugo Black, returning from the latest heat. Sweat dripped from beneath his polished leather helmet as he walked by, a mad grin spreading ear-to-ear across his handsome tan face.

“I was only thinking of how I will defeat you at the finals, Black!” she replied.

Hugo winked at the young woman, “It will take more than daydreaming, Miss Markham. Good luck.”

She turned her head away in disgust, and motioned for Fervus to exit the stables. Only a week ago she had trouble finding suitable company for dinner, yet now it seemed as if every available man in the Circuit was vying for her attention. It must be the races. They’re always so full of surprises…

It was only a few moments later when Morphia and Fervus stepped out among her competition, lining up as Thomas Dreadnaught announced each racer. In the distance she could see her sister sharing a drink with Prince Primas, her face full of disappointment. Morphia turned her attention towards the other racers, locking eyes with Henry momentarily. She turned away quickly; if she had any hope of qualifying for the next round she would need to remain focused. Thomas’ voice blared throughout the entire stadium as he shouted into a loudspeaker from a nearby platform.

“This is the second qualifying round for the Chimaera Grand Cup! Each jockey is required to race around the track a total of 25 times. The first four to finish will be declared the winners, and sent into the next round, the semi-finals!”

The crowd began to shout in anticipation, and even the jockeys could feel the vibrations of their applause. Thomas withdrew a small pistol, aiming in towards the sky, and began his countdown.

“3... 2... 1... Go!”

Before the smoke could escape the barrel of Thomas Dreadnaught’s pistol, the dozen competitors had already left the gates, with Morphia at an early lead. She held tightly onto Fervus as they raced, desperately hoping to stay ahead of the others. Fervus was an excellent sprinter, but in endurance races such as the Cup she would have hold back some of her chimaera’s energy until later.

“Do it Morphia!” Lady Bavaria screamed from the grandstands, “Make the little blonde snot suffer!”

Primas raised an eyebrow, “I had no idea that you had such passion for the races, Bavaria.”

“It’s not the race I’m concerned about, prince. It’s the family honor!”

Several laps had passed when Fervus began to shake violently. Morphia looked down at the dirt track in confusion, noticing that one of her chimaera’s ankles had become injured somehow. The race has barely begun! she thought, If we stop now the entire season will have been a waste.

It was at that moment Henry passed her by, thus taking the lead. She turned her gaze towards Henry, her eyes full of panic, as the young boy slid his mount towards her own, attempting to knock her off the track.

“Henry, don’t!” Morphia called out, “Fervus is injured!”

Over the crowds and excitement around them, Henry could neither see nor hear Morphia as he moved her ever closer off of the track. She looked behind her, where nearly a dozen more jockeys were eager to take her place. Fervus called out in pain. In an instant the beast collapsed, twisting Morphia off and knocking her violently against the dirt below.

There would be no time for the officials to stop the racers. Within a heartbeat each of the lumbering chimaera began to trample the two as they lay helpless on the track.
Helen Almagest had a wonderful time at the Chimaera Cup, sitting with her nearest and dearest and not having to worry about the pampered Princess Augustine for the moment. These moments of relaxation came too seldom in the life of a hard-boiled personal guard.

Nellie was pleased to see her family doing so well after that horrible incident at Rosengard last night. It seemed like it was all just a bad dream to everyone now.

Sighing happily, she raised her eyes to the blue sky above the Circuit. The sun was shining brightly, but if it hadn't, Nellie would have missed the peculiar reflection coming from the roof on the opposite side of the elliptical building. Suddenly she felt that something ominous was in the air, despite the lovely weather and the high spirit around her. She just could get past the alarming feeling.

"Uh, Vincent", said the young man who had appeared to Rosengard just a week ago, sitting on the seat in front of Nellie's. "I need to excuse myself, but I have no idea where the rest rooms are."

Before Vincent could reply, Nellie interrupted. "I can show him. I need to strech my legs as well."

Being quite a tomboy, Nellie had never felt embarrased to admit that even aristocrats had natural needs. After all, she had been present when Augustine, considered to be the most beautiful lady in all Czenovia, had suffered from a horrid diarrhea.

So what if it was unbecoming for a lady to show the way to the rest rooms to a man? It was also unbecoming for a lady to beat most men in arm wrestling, like Nellie did.

"Come along, then" Nellie urged the young man. Gadget was his name, she remembered. He smiled sheepishly at her, but followed obediently.

They walked along the upper corridor until they came to the stairs leading both down to the lower leves and up to the roof.

"Go down and turn left, the toilets are there. I'm going to go up to get some fresh air", Nellie told Gadget, and gave him an encouraging smile.

"What's taking so long, Donner?" Blair Stark whispered in frustration up to his husband, who was lying on the inner edge of the slightly sloping roof of the Chimaera Circuit. She was standing on the paved walkway circling the outer edge of the roof, keeping watch for passers-by.

"I'm trying to get a clear shot, Blair! So shut up and let me concentrate!" Donner hissed back. He was holding a massive rifle with a contraption that allowed him to aim with a deadly accuracy. Right now the target was on Prince Juvenus Courageous, who much to Donner's dismay was constantly swaying while cheering to the racers below.

"We need to do this now! There is no second chance, the guards will come flooding in when you kill that spawn of a tyrant", Blair explained through gritted teeth.

There was nothing that the Starks wouldn't do to save their oppressed people, but being there on hostile ground trying to assassinate one of the Dynastial Heirs was almost too fool-hardy for them. It was a long way down to the tunnels they knew by heart from the roof they were on now.

Frustrated and desperate, Blair was about to climb up the tiled slope herself when suddenly a fierce-looking tall woman rushed towards her from the left, and tackled her to the ground.

"I knew I saw something!" the woman shouted, obviously shocked to find the Starks, of all the people, up there. "Lower your weapon at once!"

The woman tried to lift the struggling Blair to shield her, but Donner was faster. He turned the rifle and shot the woman to the head, killing her in the instant.

Blair pulled away from the dead woman, and looked at her husband. "We have to abort. Somebody might have heard the shot. We will report to Augustine later."

"What about the body?" Donner asked, sliding down to the walkway. Blair glanced over the railing of the walkway. As it happened, the side of the Circuit they were on was situated on a ledge of Mt. Grail. There was only a thick cloud of smog below it.

Together they heaved the body of Helen Almagest over the railing, and it fell down for a small eternity, until it vanished into the smog. It fell all the way down to New Czenoble, where it crashed into a heap of waste, never to be found.

Silently buit in haste, Donner and Blair Stark packed the rifle to a large leather bag and ran to the stairs, eager to get away from the scene.

Gadget was returning upstairs from the toilet when to his great amazement he saw the couple in the poster from earlier that day running towards him. All three of them halted in the middle of the stairway.

"Move aside!" the man ordered. The woman just stared at Gadget.

"You... You're the Starks!" Gadget exclaimed, then instantly realizing that he had made a mistake. These two were infamous criminals who had taken countless lives in order to free the people of New Czenoble. Surely they could add Gadget to the death toll without even thinking about it.

The man moved threateningly towards him, but suddenly the woman stopped him.

"Donner! Look at him... Look at those eyes!" she said, almost in awe.

"Uh, I'll make way for you", Gadget said cautiously, backing down. "Don't hurt me, I'm from New Czenoble! You wouldn't hurt a fellow citizen, would you?"

Gadget's voice had turned to whimpering. The man was still giving a murderous stare at him, but the woman's eyes were in tears. What the heck was going on?

"Look at that face, that hair! Donner, it all matches!" she sobbed.

"Boy", the man spoke finally. "Where did you grow up? Your life depends on this answer, so don't you dare to lie!"

"I was raised in Mrs. Charcoal's orphanage, good sir. Honestly, I'm a pure New Czenoblian!" Gadget told in despair, totally unaware as to why the woman was crying and why the man was asking him such a question.

"It is him, Donner!" the woman beamed. "It's our son!"

The moments after hearing that sentence were a blur to Gadget. The next time he realized something, he was running down a dark tunnel, following the Starks. Following his parents.

The entire crowd gasped and stood up. Excited yelps and whispers ran among the audience as clouds of thick dust covered Morphia and her Chimaera.

Several medical staff were running onto the field, but it would take them some time to reach Morphia. The racetrack was plunged into chaos, as several Chimaera slammed into one another, throwing their riders off.

Macey covered her face and looked away from the track. 'I don't understand!' she cried. 'What is going on?!'

Gustave put his hand on her shoulder. 'Don't worry, my lady. I'm sure the medical staff will reach them soon enough. Surely they--'

The entire crowd cried out at once. Victoria Ann was standing in front of her mother, pointing towards the sky. 'Mister Achard! Isn't that one of yours?!'

Gustave looked up. A giant winged Chimaera was barreling out of the sky, towards the Achard Marquee.

'Everybody, get down!' cried Gustave. A wave of people crashed to the floor immediately, many too startled to have any idea what was taking place.

The injured Chimaera rocketed towards the Marquee at a brilliant speed. It screeched in pain as it clipped the Marquee's roof, causing a deafening crack.

Several people stood up and dusted themselves off. Catherine adjusted her hat and looked around worriedly. 'Where did it go? Did anyone see what happened to it?'

Gustave knew who the culprit was. He looked up at the sky track. 'Black!!' he shouted.

Vincent scrambled to his feet. Several Guard officers had entered the Marquee - Connel was among them.

'Sir!' they cried, saluting Vincent as soon as they saw him.

Vincent dusted off his coat. 'You certainly took your time!'

Connel's look was one of barely-hidden disdain. 'Securing this event is a major task, Sir, we--'

'Don't give me excuses!' yelled Vincent as he pointed a finger in Connel's face. 'I'm tired of hearing why things can't be done! I want you to secure the perimeter immediately. If there are any undesirables here, I don't want them to get out without being handcuffed. Do you understand?'

Connel nodded reluctantly. 'Of course, Sir.' And with that, he led his squad out of the Marquee.

Vincent suddenly realized he had lost Gadget. Vincent looked everywhere within the Marquee but could not find him. On top of everything, he now couldn't help but wonder if Gadget had fallen prey to the Underdogs - surely, he thought, this chaos was their doing.
