The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2006 (Nominations Thread)

Recommended Posts

What is it? Retribution. Retribution ALWAYS knows what I'm thinking. Always!!! That in itself is really nifty. Everytime there's a debate thread, I read what Retri's written, and then I'm like, "damn, he said EXACTLY what I wanted to say!" Plus he's nice enough to humor me and my silly conversations. >_>

What is it? Mafia. Mafia was SO much fun to play. I really had a great time. It was simple to play, and yet complicated as well, to figure out who the mafia was. Everyone played so well, and it was just great!

What is it? Otakupedia. We've had certain archives of Otakuboards things in the past - Otakudaily, um... that site that breko had with OB stuff, the picture site by QA hosted by Tony, the Otakupike (shy!!), but Otakupedia is really nifty because it's RIGHT on the boards, it's organized, and you can see exactly what's in it. And yes, Charles always comes up with nifty ideas.

What is it? DeathKnight, aka Ken. YOU! *points finger accusingly* You had BETTER PM me or something. You're never on AIM. *whines* Oh, I'm not supposed to be talking TO you, but about you. Gotcha. Right. Ken is intelligent but funny and sarcastic, all at the same time. He has great potential to become the next Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart, only about a hundred times better. And he's never afraid to speak his mind, which I admire about him. =)

What is it? [Thread] The Complaint

Why is it nifty? Because looking back on it, I think it was all pretty funny (despite the fact that I was a main-figure in the whole 'plot'), and it actually accomplished something to a certain degree. And like John said, Truman Show. Haha. Funny enough, I actually made alot of my better current friends through the 'secret' organizations we formed.

What is it? [Members] White, Ezekiel, Dragon Warrior, Retribution

Why is it nifty? Because they are all generally ballin' (cool for those not in the know) individuals. Also people I would consider good friends.

What is it? Size 1 Text, with or without color.

Why is it nifty? Because it looks pretty and all the cool kids use it.

Anime Lounge
I wouldn't say it's necessarily become more Nifty this year, but I've actually been back and done some posting there recently, reminding myself (after long stints in the Otaku Lounge) that I joined this Board to talk about anime. It may not be cool to like anime anymore, but at least those of us that still have the bug are allowed a little ghetto where we can discuss it!

[thread=52331]The Otaku Lounge Rules Sticky[/thread]
This is a purely selfish nomination, because now, instead of giving lengthy explanations, I can just say "go read the [thread=52331]sticky[/thread], n00b". Which gives me more time to post around without my Moderator hat.

What is it? Shy. [Event Master]
Why is it nifty?
I'm Shy. I'm a 21 year-old college student who has been living on my own for almost a year. I created Thread Ratings while also participating in one of the most graphic RPGs to date. More to the point, I regularly consume alcoholic beverages and have engaged in irresponsible sex countless times. I DON'T WANT CURSING IN MY GODDAMN ARENA, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT IT OFFENDS 8 YEAR OLDS.
What is it? Harem of Celebrity Lust [Thread]
Why is it nifty? Not only did the thread contain one of the highest concentrations of beautiful people ever, it was a blast reading the captions and comments and seeing what (physically and personality-wise) people found attractive about their celebrity crushes.

What is it? Pirates or Ninjas? [Thread]
Why is it nifty? This was one of the funnest threads I've seen on OtakuBoards in the five-odd years I've been here. The arguments, great picture evidence, and enthusiastic back-and-forth between Ninja and Pirate supporters made this thread the best thing to happen to OB all summer.

What is it? Suggestions & Feedback [Forum]
Why is it nifty? The Suggestions and Feedback forum is my favorite forum. It's usually a sleeper forum, and it can go for weeks without a post that doesn't involve myOtaku modification help, but every once in a while, you get a real gem. The MAMA thread, the recent Adventure Square thread (which is flying along with over 50 posts in less than twenty-four hours), and of course the unparalleled....

What is it? A suggestion of the .com variety[Thread]
Why is it nifty?
hi im new here but thats not to say that i dont have an idea or two

I think that the .com should possibly be abolished and changed to .wand or even .elf

This would give the website a more mystical feel and I feel that it would imrpove the experience as a whole. It would also attract attention from people searching the internet for wands who might have an interest in the community.

What is it? John [Member]
Why is it nifty? Because his signatures are consistently hilarious.
Edit: Except for, apparently, right now. What a slacker.
He pays tribute to the best (this is of course subjective) aspects of the boards, and I think that the awareness that he raises is worthy of recognition.

Pirates or Ninjas?
Go ahead and read through that thread. I dare you. It's filled with piles and piles of nonsense. However, it's probably the most fun I've had defending something ever. I wish dearly that Your Mother didn't ruin it for everyone because we weren't really doing anything wrong until he came along. However Pirates won in the end, anyway. I guess it doesn't help that the Ninja-Fanboys made it so easy.
White, I love you to death, bud, but Ninja pwn Pirates any day of the week. Though the thread is definitely Nifty, women like Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom weren't our main sources of defense in terms of great sea-dwellers. I would just like to second these two fine, fine nominations. If these two aren't included on the list, I will hang myself, come back from the dead, and then make a thread about my angry feelings in OL.

I'll include some actual nominations of my own later.

What is it? SunfallE
Why is it Nifty? From helping me with all my questions when I first joined, to her polite and friendly manner on the boards, to teaching me how to use one of the most wonderful functions on the forum. Namely the ignore feature. She is definitely one nifty lady.

What is it? The staff
Why is it Nifty? They keep the place from falling apart and do it with unmistakable flair. From Charles with his pictures and unique humor to Panda with her more motherly touch, all of them are quite nifty.
What is it? Aaryanna_Mom
Why is it Nifty? In addition to contributing to various threads with insightful comments she has an unmistakable motherly air about her and a no nonsense approach with her opinions. And when it?s all said and done, I find myself wishing she were my mother. So she?s definitely quite nifty.
What is it? Otakupedia
Why is it Nifty? Because not only does it show how diverse a history this site has, it?s a great place for new members to learn about some of the fun and wacky things this site has seen over the years.

I'll try to get some new sig material up for ya soon. ;P

What: Sara
Why: Because the only reason I didn't nominate her before was that I know she's going to get in anyway (hell, she'd get in even if nobody nominated her. Sara's that good). But now that she's nominated me, it's good tact and even better ***-kissery to let my support be known officially. Sara's seriously one of the most remarkable people I know, period. And what's more, I'm pretty sure she gets that frequently. Many oldies (I'm starting to hate that word) have lots of admiration and respect coming to them, but in my eyes Sara's the only one who actually deserves the outright awe that many members bestow on them.

Why is it Nifty? Because the graphics for the results were gorgeous. The detail and work that went into the presentations really brought the whole event to life.

What is it? Charles [member/staff]
Why is it Nifty? Because it?s Charles! From the funny pictures he posts, to the Otakupedia thread he spawned, to the current Let's Abolish Profanity in Adventure Square/Reform thread, there isn?t anything Charles does that isn?t nifty.

What is it? Aaryanna_Mom [member]
Why is it Nifty? She brings a certain amount of calm to otherwise heated debates and as other members have observed:
In all honesty, I think that almost all the teenagers (and some others) on OtakuBoards think of you as the OB Mom. I know that whenever I see you've posted in a thread I'll be posting in, I clean up my post a little bit just because it feels right.

Having a mod's mom posting on the boards is probably the most entertaining thing that's happened here in years. XD
Just her presence is enough to encourage better posting while being entertaining at the same time. Along with her candid opinion on subjects that she disagrees with you on and how she does so with a dash of motherly love, she's definitely quite nifty.

Tek, I thought we agreed: what happened in the Pirates vs. Ninjas thread stays in the Pirates vs. Ninjas thread. And for goodness' sakes don't bring Jesus into this.

I wouldn't watch nearly as diverse a selection of series if it wasn't for Dagger starting Anime Lounge threads. Without her I might have missed out on Haruhi! Her breadth of knowledge allows her to justify her criticisms when she has them, but she's equally unafraid of squee-ing like a little girl when something exciting, original or plain pretty comes along.

[thread=54075]6 Degrees of Wikipedia. [Game][/thread]
Game threads. Don't you just hate 'em? Spam magnets all. But this one was time-consuming and challenging enough that you couldn't just 'pop in' and post a response, you had to do your homework. So the n00bs avoided it like the plague and everything stayed shiny, until John asked us to connect Hippopotamus with Tin-foil Hat, after which it all went a bit quiet.

I have tried to add ones that haven't been mentioned yet instead of seconding obvious choices :<
Because if I were to add on already suggested topics/people, I'd bust the 'max 10 nominations' rule! Evil limitations ;_;

theOtaku.com's Podcasters - My reasoning for this choice, aside from the added top notch awesomeness of the comment box antics that always follow after a show has aired, is that OtakuBoards has a link to MyOtaku which is tied into theOtaku.com where the Podcasts take place. Spiffyness by association and stuff ¬¬;

Any thread in the Anime Lounge that Dagger has either created or graced with her presence: There are many other great posters in that lounge but her name kinda cements the fact that I'll get valid insight on an anime >.>

Crimes of Hate by Ezekiel - It helped support the need of decent OB fanfics and always felt totally devoid of inside exclusiveness. Terrific writing that spurred an enthusiastic fan base, even among those who despise OB fanfics.
We?re Anchormen! by Annie/Tex - This is a great example on how the other end of the OB fanfic spectrum should look like. Annie has grown stronger in her writing for each year that has passed and when "Bikini Bandits" went on hiatus I was happy to see her indulge us in this project [to cushion the feeling of loss] ^^

The Tragedy of Mitch and Alex by Charles - The mere mention of it should suffice :p

One Per Minute by Liam - Not only is Liam a great boy toy but he's a magnificant writer. After the [horribly traumatically] painful end of the latest installment in the RPG "SYF" installments he understood that, in order for me to survive, a new era would have to dawn.

Bringing along all the charm from SYF and stepping it up 10 more notches, together with side-kick & co-creator Sere Tuscumbia, he has more than satisfied me. I thought it was over but this is only the beginning.

Charles goes to court by Charles - He's put under a scrutinizing microscope constantly and it only magnifies his tremendous appeal. Totally Guilty, I say ;p

Slackers in Slacks by Dragon Warrior - Some of the puns prolonged my life with their brilliancy and the creation is just one of many oddball projects DW has pulled out of his sleeve/hat. Continue to grow and create, man 8-)
Make your own motivation poster by Charles [in the Otaku Lounge] - A thread with the same concept, created by gabrielzero, can be found in the Art Studio. However, I feel it garnered more attention on the OL, helping many to idle away both precious and dispensible time.

Love Letters to Desbreko by Shy - Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Desbreko's reign on OB, Shy came up with the outstanding idea to start this thread. Shy, in combination with Desbreko - and Shinmaru by extension - makes this a perfect choice to wrap up my nominations ^^

Wow. I've been nominated? That's ... wow. That's truly humbling, given the amount of time I've been here. I did not expect that.
What is it? Threads like these [Or, as a blanket, the fun-loving-members-in-general]
Why is it nifty? Because they show OB members at their best - being obnoxious and silly without really being mean. =D
I second that.

I also enjoyed how Retribution's current sig goes with her last words in Post #4 from the second thread:
Sensory deprivation is standard
It made me smile.

What is is? [thread] Gifts and Curses
Why is is nifty? Well, it hasn't died yet. The whole thing started back in September and was a thread I had actually considered applying to, if I hadn't had so much crud to worry about. Aside from that, Vicky seems to be doing a masterful job of controlling the plot without actually controlling much at all. I've been watching it the whole time, and I've seen two real storylines evolving: one with most of the members and another centered around Charles [Ozy J.], Dani [Vicky], and Juliet [Revalation]. Reading the underground is fun as well because it gives me insight on what and how the big names are thinking as they're writing.

What is it? [thread] Ever Unmistakable
Why is it nifty? Read for yourself. Every time the author (kalon) has posted another segment, I get another twenty minutes of absolute bliss. I'm not able to get to a library much anymore, so to have found reading material this good makes my day.

What is it?: [ MEMBERS ] SunfallE, Dragon Warrior, Cancer & Panda
Why is it Nifty?: And you need a reason? SunfallE is the nifties mod. Actually she's the first mod that truely helped me out when I became mod especially when a few others, ahem, who weren't a mod at the time weren't too happy with the decision. I really appreciate the support and for that she earns the first spot on my list. Dragon Warrior for obvious reason, and he's the only one I've recently kept in the most contact w/on my short break. Cancer because he seems to be the only one who ever replies to my graphic requests (did I mention his work kicks ***?) and Panda because her banner/avatar sets are always so cute and she stays true to her name. (I swear she can find any panda picture on the planet, amazing). Hrmmm...that's all I can think of for now.

What is it?: Peanut + Dragon Warrior Marriage
Why is it Nifty?: Shameless plug? Maybe. DW and I have been married for quite a while now and we're the cutest couple on OB, dontcha think? Besides, I got an onion ring so therefore it makes it the coolest one.

What is it?: Otaku Idol 2
Why is it Nifty?: Genius. I love the whole concept of auditioning for a mod position, for some reason it's so entertaining and fun. It's like my icing on the cake.

What?: The Moderators
Why?: These people are absolutely amazing (and not just because I'm one of them :P). Otakuboards is probably the smartest, most well-organized message board I've ever been to, and the moderator staff (and higher, of course) all help keep it together. It's not just work work work, though. Sure, we're like the police of OB, but there is a ton of hilarity and fun that ensues behind the scenes. I'm very happy to be on the team, and not just for the cookies and partying. Those are just a nice bonus.

That might be the only one from me. I wish I could come up with more but at the moment I'm avoiding working on a research paper.

Expect another post from me as time goes on. Why isn't this very active this year?

Opinionate Me This!
By interviewing members on a variety of subject matter, Mimmi created one of the most dynamic discussion threads in the boards history. It?s only fitting that it was placed in OB Anthology, where it would be safe from the wrath of our less literate members.

Forest Friends!
??But then again, the forest wasn't that safe anymore, because the humans were destroying it. The safest place for a little white kitten to be right now was with Jinx and the others. Her forest friends??

Sandy and White are like Yin and Yang, the sun and the moon, fire and ice. Both are beloved members of the staff, but each represent a much different portion of the community. Over the past year they have both proved their worth to the community, making the competition for becoming OB?s next Event Master much more interesting in the process.

These two members, more than any others, defined the past year at OtakuBoards. Regardless of the outcome, both should be proud of the hard work they put into their respective events. The community and I are extremely thankful.

The Harem of Celebrity Lust
From Carey Grant to Jessica Alba, there?s a celebrity for everyone to fantasize over. Beautiful people. Beautiful thread.

Coming Attractions
Even though it was short-lived, Jokopoko made a great contribution to the Underground. It?s this kind of innovation that separates OB from other forums, and Joko deserves a lot of credit for coming up with it.

Alan is always challenging the status quo, whether it is through his posts, custom titles, or creative efforts like Forest Friends. Although his contributions to the boards are difficult to measure, he is easily one of our best members, and more importantly, a great friend.

Spam Porn Bots
If Sandy and White defined the past year, Spam Porn Bots defiled it. Without computer programs made specifically to register for message boards and advertise pornography, it would have been a boring year indeed! Thank you for giving staff members something to rally against.

Rachmanioff is nifty because, as a relatively new member here, his well though out posts and mature demeanour set him apart as an example for all newer members to follow. Plus, he chose one awesome screenname and shows a devotion to music in his sig and avatar that rivals Aaryanna's devotion to Bichon Frises.

6 Degrees of Wikipedia
The most original game thread I've seen on the board. Although I was a bit to busy to go flitting through Wiki links to solve the clues, I enjoyed reading the results and the links that liked two totally different ideas together. Thus, it is nifty.

Shinje is nifty because he is the second most ignored person on the OtakuBoards (couldn't event get the most ignored title....curses, Mr. Maul!) and despite his RPG attempts failing at every turn, his only success being the creation of two sequels to a RPG created by another member, Shinje has stuck with the OB, though nowadays he prefers to mull about the Otaku Arts & Entertainment exclusively, and nominate himself for awards.

Shinje has decided this course of action might suit him better this Nifty Fifty than last years attempt to threaten dogs with certain death. Shinje figures if it's good for charles, it's good for his non-equivalent.

Why is it nifty? When crime rears it's ugly head, when the world is threatened, when the very nations we live in face the gravest of times there is but one Team who will rise to the challenge and fight for what is right, good and lawful. The Super Otaku Force is not that team. However, it did play a big role in making sure that a cell phone thief did not go unpunished and made the world a better place.

Why is it nifty? Because we'll finally have someone to blame when one of those OB Parody Fics comes true and everyone's sucked into the interweb. It's a shame we'll all be attacked by a monster...>> Also because she's an all-around nice person, when she sets foot out of the Arena...granted, that's not often.

What is it? HyperZeroX
Why is it nifty? Because of a high-handed holier-than-thou attitude that earned him the writhing hatred of every single arena moderator in less than three posts! And because of the nonsense he posted in this thread. I still lawl.

Desbreko's Nifty Fifty 2007 nominations. Now in alphabetical order!

What is it? Aaryanna_Mom
Why was it nifty? As cool as it is just to have a member's mother join OtakuBoards and become an active poster, Aaryanna_Mom also adds new insight or a new point of view to many threads she posts in. It's apparent that she can see more than one side of an issue, and though she speaks her mind and stands behind her beliefs, she always argues in a non-abrasive way. Even if you don't agree with her, it's hard not to like her.

What is it? Asiaphilia, or Count to Ten Before You Post, Please. by Sara
Why was it nifty? You could tell just from the title and author that this was going to be a great thread. And it was. Poking fun at asiaphiles is always fun, but even better was poking fun at someone overreacting about asiaphiles. . . . The mental image of Papa Smurf dressed as Darth Vader and choking a Naruto cosplayer also helped.

What is it? Charles
Why was it nifty? Charles is an all-around awesome person and does indeed have some nine years of backlogged niftiness remaining. But regardless of that he'd have earned my nomination anyway just from the past year. On top of everything else--which includes Otakupedia--he's helped out a lot by rejoining the staff and helping to clean up Play It (now Hardwired) when I couldn't find anyone else for the job.

What is it? DeadSeraphim
Why was it nifty? Some might consider his sarcasm inappropriate or his one-liners spammy at times, but DeadSeraphim realizes better than most that this is, after all, simply an internet forum and that few things here should be taken too seriously. For those who can take a joke, he can be a pretty cool guy. Despite some differences in opinion between us, he's remained a good friend of mine for a number of years now because we both realize it's pointless to argue over frivolities.

What is it? The Desbreko Fanclub
Why was it nifty? Formed by Aaryanna, SunfallE, Mariskah, and indifference, the Desbreko Fanclub is a fanclub dedicated to myself. As if the four of them weren't nifty enough on their own, they decided all on their own to band together under the grand banner of Desbreko. This increased their niftiness exponentially, resulting in an uber-niftiness that rivals the best OB has to offer.

What is it? The Gold Star Award
Why was it nifty? More prestigious than the Nifty Fifty, more subjective than the Otaku Awards, and more mysterious than the "Deal With This Member" Thread. What is this ominously shiney award? A gold star of some kind. How do you win? That's what makes it so mysterious. Can you achieve a Gold Star Award? All signs point to no.

What is it? Secret Staff Yaoi Lounge
Why was it nifty? The Secret Staff Yaoi Lounge has been surrounded by mystery and intrigue for years, with few knowing whether it's simply a myth or if it actually does exist somewhere within the depths of OtakuBoards. And those who do know aren't saying anything. It's like OtakuBoards' own fountain of youth; everyone wants to find it but, try as they might, no one has been successful.

What is it? Panda
Why is it nifty? Besides being nifty for being a Panda fairy, she's a hard working dedicated member of the staff. Her tireless work at both OtakuBoards and theOtaku help keep things running smoothly. And to make it even better, she's one of the nicest and friendliest members around.

What is it? Sandy
Why is it nifty? In addition to running fun and successful RPG's he's someone who takes the time to help you get your own RPG started. I don?t think my current RPG would have been anywhere as successful as it has been with out all his input and tips on ways to improve it. That alone makes him quite nifty.

What is it? Members [indifference, Peanut, Aaryanna, Mariskah]
Why is it nifty? These members just show how there are so many amazing members here at OtakuBoards, people that make the best of friends, from indifference with her unique sense of irony, Peanut with her friendly personality, Aaryanna with her cheerfulness and Mariskah with her wacky sense of humor. I could add quite a few people to this list as so many people here are quite nifty.

What is it? The staff
Why is it nifty? Because without their great examples for me to follow in and their help when I had so many questions when I first started as a staff member. I don?t know how I would have managed. That and everyone knows that James has a cute Australian accent and Desbreko is Link in real life. Definitely nifty.

I actually had quite a few more to nominate, but since they?ve already been mentioned I left them out. That way if I realize I?ve forgotten something I can come back and post some more! :catgirl:

I'm actually so late with my nominations - I've been meaning to get these in for a long time.

What is it? The Arena Mob
Why is it Nifty? The Arena Moderators are legion - Lady Asphyxia, Revelation, Jokopoko, Ozymandius Jones, Ezekiel, Sandy and myself - and we have all managed to work extremely well together in the past. Even if Zeke and Sandy always get to close threads before me...

What is it? RPs that die before they've even finished their first page
Why is it Nifty? There are so damn many of them! These are the RPs that get massive interest in the sign-up stage, and then when people actually get round to starting them, they die after less than 15 posts. I know, because I have actually created a number of them.

What is it? Revelation and Jokopoko
Why is it Nifty? These are the two members I have spoken to most outside of the 'Boards, and what can I say? They're pretty Nifty people.

What is it? The Cult of OB Fanfics
Why is it Nifty? The sheer variety of them - from those of below-average standard to those of an extremely high quality, we have had sci-fi, crime, fantasy, action, and waay too many assassin fanfics. They allow members who have been involved to escape their own reality for a moment and imagine themselves as these characters the writers portray them as. However, they do sometimes draw attention away from original stories...

What is it? Not Charles or Dragon Warrior
Why is it Nifty? These two always get nominated in the Nifty Fifty, and I'm one person they're not getting nominations off. Take that.

What is it? The Nifty Fifty
Why is it Nifty? The name says it all, and how can something with so many Nifty things in it not be Nifty itself?

There may be more coming at some point.
