At first I thought there were only three or so User types. One being "New Member" another "Member". I thought the only other type of member would be a moderator. But just now I saw somebody that was labelled "Still a member". What does that mean? In fact, what do any of the labels mean? Is it the amount of posts somebody has? Or is it given to them by a moderator? I'm sorry if this is a repeat thread, or if people have heard this and are tired of it. I just noticed them... -ArV

If you want something that makes you laugh and cry, try Samurai Champloo. It's a historical series that holds no claims to being historically accurate. It takes place during the time of the Samurai so there are plenty of great fight scenes, but it relies heavily on the Hip Hop theme. This gives it a unique style, and a launching pad for comedy. Or, do what I do. Go through the "Anime Lounge" at OtakuBoards and read the descriptions of different anime until you find one you like. ^^ -ArV

What a big twist!! They're making you
hate and hate Sasori more and more aren't they?
267 is a really good fight with great plot revelations... Ooooo... I still wonder what anti-aging cream he uses though. -ArV

go to an anime convention. there are a lot of adults there. Adults make up a lot of the Anime community. To say that "adults criticize anime" is a generalization that basically disenfranchises all the adults that do like Anime. -ArV

My birthday was yesterday... ^^ BWAHAHAHA I'm legal now... whatever that means. XD "No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women, no fun, no sin" but I can vote! No wonder it's dark... -ArV

Zhara, I know it's hard, and they don't deserve it, but try not to let it get to you. Some people are jerks and don't understand when there's somebody who is hurting. Don't let these ******** get to you. Just send your father lots of candy and postcards. And give him two big hugs, one before he goes and one when he comes back. -ArV
Are you saying TNN or Spike. Because i've never heard off TNN/Spike. If it is just Spike then they'd have to air Censored Hentai because it is basic cable and not something where you order it.
Aren't TNN and Spike the same? Spike being the new name for the station? And they censor everything...even Star Frickin Trek. I don't understand why Pamela Anderson's air-head show V.I.P. is a better quality show than Star Frickin Trek. Maybe you're thinking TMN? That's definately not basic cable. -ArV
So are you saying that the voices were always the same from the beginning for American viewers?
I have no idea about the American voices. If somebody who watched the series in the United States could post, that would be helpful.
Dubbs usoally vary between different country's.
That's not true. I've been in Q&A sessions with those responsible for the dubs. Dubs are created for American Audiences. Canadians get whatever the Americans get, they don't get "special" dubs. That's way too expensive. So even when Canadians dub a series they have to say things with American tones.
I just wanted to point out that US airs a different dubb, even if the voices were the same.
The only "different" dubs I know about are the "uncut" versions that are aired during Adult Swim episodes. We still get those. It depends on the station and CRTC which versions are allowed to be aired at which times, but the networks still have access to them. Again, no "special" dub for YTV. -.o If I'm wrong I apologize.... -ArV
Why would they Dub the show twice?
This is what I heard, it could be wrong. They dubbed the show in Vancouver at first. This was when they used voices like Scott McNeil for Piccolo. Partways through the series FUNimation decided to switch to voice actors who work in LA. Later on they decided to switch back to the Canadian voices. So, in the US you only hear the American Voices. On YTV, they keep switching with whatever FUNimation gives them. -ArV

The manga really is getting to a good part. ^^ A friend of mine was shocked at the
third Kazekage
but I wasn't too surprised. Kishimoto does this a lot; whenever somebody is about to appear, or about to fight, somebody else is proclaiming "how strong they are". So if you ever see somebody in Naruto saying "That guy is the strongest ever!" that means he's about to fight. XD I was really shocked at
Sasori's appearance! Dude! He's so young! I wonder how he does it... "Dead-man cold cream"? XD
-ArV

I saw something called Panda-Z a few months back. It was really, really short and it didn't really have plot. It was a Panda piloting a giant robot panda and fighting against other giant robots. All I remember, though, is that the female one shot missiles out of its chest. o.o;;; -ArV

I just spent the last three hours reading VG Cats. Now I just feel like my brain is fried. Maybe I should get some sleep. I don't feel coherent. The style of the stories reminded me of the comics done by Invader Zim's creator. That would be JTHM and Squee. They were mostly funny. I ventured to save the ones I liked... and I saved too many. It's also cool to see those Canadian References in there since it's (as they claim) 99.9% Canadian. XD. Resident Evil: Toronto. Reminds me of those "I Survived Toronto --- Black out, SARS, Mad Cow, West Nile" T-Shirts. -ArV

I live in Canada. So we don't have TechTV. Nor do we have Cartoon Network. Instead of the animation giant, we have the lame Teletoon. Actually, Teletoon used to be a good network, but now it just sucks. It tries to succeed by showing Family Guy and Futurama reruns over and over and over. It imports American animation like there's no-tomorrow, and everything else they get (CRTC forces them to have a certain amount of Canadian material) just sucks. Back when they started, they took risks and showed amazing comics by small-time animators. They also showed documentaries on animating. Now, they show Family Guy. Only anime is on YTV: Gundam Seed, Inuyasha, Beyblades, etc. This network only shows series that are geared towards children. This is due to its namesake Youth Television. It has the chance to redeem itself, but it seems to just continues to serve soccer moms and preteen dubbies. This is probably where I'll have to watch Naruto in between commercial breaks that involve clay figures flicking boogers at the screen. Like Teletoon, it used to be a better station. It sucks because it feels like it has to conform. We do have TNN/Spike TV, though. It's an annoying channel that plays nothing but the same movies (Godfather, and one Star Trek movie) as well as stupid truck shows, stupid V.I.P., and the same stupid episodes of C.S.I. Whenever something good is supposed to come on, Americans get to see it but stupid Canadian censors change it to V.I.P. I don't know why they wanted us to watch stupid Plastic Anderson and her hair-dry crew but not Star Trek. As for Read or Die (although, I don't know what it has to do with this thread really) don't worry about trying to understand the OAV (Movie). There's too much information, and they don't explain it until the TV Series. Then you can sit and be bored as they explain e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. -ArV

my cousins in the Philippines are supposedly haunted by ghosts. they have tons of stories that happened to them... one involved a doppleganger... my cousin's girlfriend was talking to her sister but the sister wasn't responding. the sister would stand there, staring at my cousin's girlfriend. suddenly she just gets up and leaves. and out of another door the real sister comes walking out of the washroom. she had no idea what was going. that's all i can remember for now. >.< -ArV

I typed in "Peacemaker Kurogane" in Google to find people that actually watched the series. I came across this thread. It was then I was introduced to the first forum I've been to that restricted short posts, and where the moderators actually did something to boost intelligent conversation. And it was good. -ArV

Why is it that every time a bad guy has his enemy (the good guy) is custody that he doesn't just kill him but instead gives him time to make his escape? Watch Kim Possible. It teaches us that bad guys have rules they must always follow, like revealing their master plan to the hero. Why is it that the good guy almost always seems to win? It's more demographically pleasing.......? Why is it that almost every main character of an action anime has to have gravity defying hair and fashion statements that cost $100s if there just going to get ripped in the next fight anyway? Because buff action heros have a fashion side too. Why is it that Vash's yellow glasses can get broken but he gets a new pair easily with his low budget when here a pair of those glasses cost $100+? Maybe his budge is low because of the glasses! Why is it in almost every action anime the villan's always cocky and his/her laugh sucks? I don't know what you're talking about! Nothing beats the classic, MUAHAHAHAHAHA... except maybe the classic BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Why is it that anger is symbolized with four corner put together to make a cross and not just a red face or something more simple? My guess is that it originated in manga, and it's hard to colour a person in black and white. That and Manga emphasized on lines. Why is it that all these questions are completely pointless yet someone is bound to end up answering a few of them? o.O It was quite interesting, and no matter what Godel says, Star Trek is shway. And now I shall be lame and copy you... poorly. ^^ -ArV Why is it good guys in video games can get shot hundreds of times before being killed, when it takes two to three hits to kill a bad guy? Why is it characters in video games can heal themselves of gun shot wounds by picking up a piece of dirty meat from the ground? Why is it most of the girls in Naruto suck at fighting? Why is it that every frickin guy in Fushigi Yuugi falls in love with Miaka or (more rarely) Yui? Why is it Anime fans have this obsession with "neko-jin"? Why is it games played in children's tournaments in Hikaru no Go look a lot like pro games that took place a few years earlier? (don't answer this, i know the answer -.o) Why is there so much talking in anime fights?

I got really mad at Chain mailers once. Partly because of the letter quality and repetition, but mostly because many people would automatically forward without reading the email. I don't think it's really worth it to go completely psycho... I take my revenge creativly. ^^ Because I was so annoyed with obviously fake-looking "Hotmail is closing" letters, I took a real Hotmail news letter and changed all the text to match the "Hotmail is closing" theme. After I sent it to the people who usually send me forwards, I sent an angry note explaining what it was. -.o Come to think of it, I was pretty immature... but eh, that was four years ago. -ArV

A lot of girls in my school are near-obsessed with this fashion. My best friend bought a couple Gothic-Lolita dresses while she was in Japan, and a couple others were designing a Gothic-Lolita style dress in Design class. Another group of girls painted a lot of J-Rockers in Gothic-Lolita dresses, but that might be just for the J-Rockers...
Hello loves. I am into the whole Gothic Lolita fashion in Japan....in fact it's the way i dress
Wow, that's cool. I've never seen a person who dresses like that day to day, only at conventions and whatnot. Do you get a lot of stares? How often do people question you about your clothing? When they do, what do you tell them? -ArV

Naruto Narutimetto Hero 2 is pretty good. Mostly a 2D fighter with large multi-level stages, the game also includes an RPG mode that allows 3d roaming. All the characters are done by the proper voice actors in the series, and the mouth synchronization to the words is better than the Anime. All of the genin's are in the game with a few surprise characters. Even a character from the Naruto movie is in the game. You can also collect figurines, music, and videos by earning money from Ninja missions. The only worry I have comes from playing the game at my friend's house today. You're able to boost a specific character's stats very high, making for DBZ-style speed and jumping ability. I had Hinata jumping across the screen in single bounds. It makes slightly confusing and irritating gameplay. Oh... if it weren't for the boosts, I would've won. XD jk. -ArV
In wing which one of the five pilots wasn't intentionally suppose to command a pilot?
You mean command a Gundam? Anime Subs (Japanese voices with subtitles) or Dubs (English voices)?
r2vq replied to Bloodseeker's topic in Otaku Central
Wow, at first I thought this thread was the same as all the other sub vs dub threads, but I like the poll. ^^
I'm a complete Sub-snob. i've gotten to the point where i completely refuse to watch anything with the english dub, i wont even give the dub a chance unless i catch the series on TV and don't have a choice (and in most of those instances i get sickened and turn it off).
You're just like my girlfriend. To be honest, I find that attitude kind of annoying. English actors are getting better, and some of them are particularly talented.
I really don't know why i hate the dubs so much, but i think it just sounds much more natural in the original japanese and i have yet to find an english voice actor who can portray emotions as well as the original japanese voice actors/actresses.
Could it be that since you're not a natural speaker of the language it's harder for you to identify bad acting? In English is particularly easy to find a bad actor since your ears are trained to spot somebody lying to you. In Japanese, though, you don't understand the language or intonations that are unique to a culture. This might impede your identification of a poor Japanese actor. Therefore, you may be enjoying the series more because you don't understand it, rather than the reason being the acting.
Now, I am sure that at least one of you all have heard of the sikiningly adorable, but still prety good anime, 'Card Captor Sakura', right? Well, i am almost completly turned off to dubs after witnessing the horror that is 'Cardcaptors'. They changed the personalities of the characters, and also tried to change the show!
Like Dagger-dono said, the issue here isn't the acting itself, but the censorship. Unfortunately with a different set of morals and target audience, a lot of dubs are modified. This is a big turn off for subbies and has created a lot of sub-snobs. There are, though, uncut versions of Anime available if you know where to look. I don't have Carton Network myself but I hear Adult Swim is a place to look. You can also get the DVDs of a show. Those are usually uncut and unedited. ---===--- I voted for "prefer subs" because I watch more on my computer than I do on TV. I don't mind dubs as long as the acting is good and the story is acceptable. Unlike many Narutards out there, I'm actually looking forward to the Naruto dub. ^^ edit: I think, though, there should've been a selection that was neutral. I would've picked that. -ArV -

Hm. Maybe I can be a bit more specific. According to how I understand Kant... (I could be wrong) The valley before us is a real valley. The dodgeball is real. What we see, though, is not necessarily the valley. What we beleve we see is the valley. What we actually experience is the image of the valley created by light reflections and our mind processing what our eyes take in. The original valley does not enter our head. What hits us, is the dodgeball. What we believe, is that we feel the dodgeball. What we actually experience is the ball stimulating our nerves, sending messages to our brain. Our brains tell us that we feel pain. Our brains tell us that a rubbery substance is smacking us upside the head. Or if it's not fast enough, our brain will not tell us much before being knocked out. If we're knocked out, our brains tell us nothing, hence blacking out. There is a real dodgeball and valley involved, I do not deny that. It is really the valley in front of us. It is really a dodgeball that hits us. But, what is in our minds is a recreation of the object based on our perceptions. If we do not smell the valley, we will not know its smell. If we do not taste the ball, we do not know its taste. In that sense, since our mind-pictures of the objects are not whole, they are not the exact objects. What we have in our mind is not the original objects, but just what we know based on our perspective. We will never know the original object, but only what the object is for us since our perceptions will forever be biased.
And like I said before, is it ("it" being the valley example) a metaphysical perceptual issue or just a simple matter of physical perspective, in that we can't see something because we're just too far away, or not at the right angle, and not because our senses are primitive?
Everybody has their own perspective. But even if we could see the valley from every perspective, our minds only interpret the information. This is important in metaphysics because before Kant proclaimed this (transcendental idealism ---- transcendental not transcendential) everybody -including Descartes and Hume- treated natural and universal truths as if attainable through reason or a combination of reason and empirical observation. Kant's transcendental idealism created a copernican revolution in philosophy and metaphysics. Even if you don't have to think about it every day. -ArV
It really doesn't matter how "old" an anime is. DBZ is a perfect example of anime trash..
Yeah, DBZ is trash. But I like the older series, Dragon Ball. And the age of an Anime will affect it a lot. Newer Anime is directed towards you, older Anime isn't. When the movie Batman came out, it was given Four Stars. Some thought it should be "The Movie of the Decade." But when comparing it to Batman Begins, it just doesn't stand. Batman Begins has a much more solid storyline, fight scene, and characterization. The reason for that is because a different generation expects different things. This is also why I don't think Akira should be considered overrated.
I find it hard to believe that you say the series "doesn't translate very well into tv?" From the very start, the manga itself is poorly written. In other words both manga and anime are terrible.[/COLOR'] :animedepr
The manga was based off a legend. And Sasuke04 has a good point. "Dragon ball is good while your ten years old." Remember not only the target audience's perspective, but their age. The series was meant for children and was good at delivering for them. It wasn't meant to be something sophisticated like Ghost in the Shell. It was what it was supposed to be. I think the mangaka was great because the angles he used, the details he put in, and the way he differentiated between characters, all with a deadline displayed such detail and care that should've taken four times as long as it did. I also say that it doesn't translate well into TV. This is because in the manga, scenes showing a character's face is common. Talking is common. Shots showing one frame of action is also common. It actually flies by pretty fast. The anime, though, chose to keep these scenes and shots. They made each episode long and tedious with lots of talking and not much movement from each character. Thus, what worked well in the Manga didn't work at all in the Anime. -ArV
