How good is America doing in their foreign affairs?
Roxie Faye replied to Morpheus's topic in General Discussion
Oh. okay. Thanks for the clarification. *is happy* ^__^ Foreign Policy? I'm not quite as knowledgable about the economy as Heaven's Cloud (I will be soon - I just have to read that damned stuff on Economics again; I'm so lazy). All I know is that we used to have more money, and now we're in a 4 trillion dollar debt, and growing... I was just a child during the Clinton administration, but I would really like to know, where the hell that surplus went? Did we spend it all, and what did we spend it on? I'm lost over here. X_x The thing that not many people realize (actually, I didn't realize it up until a few weeks ago, how sad), is that foreign policy is created to benefit the country it belongs to. I swear to God, that's the purpose of it. I learned this in US History 1 when we were talking about the Hamilton financial plan (you can stop laughing at me now). But yeah, foreign policy should technically firs tbe in the interest of the nation, and then in the interest of other nations if we have time to be the world police. If I've got that wrong, please let me know, since I'm nowhere near adequately knowledgeable on this topic. >_< If you put it on a Pro-con chart, economically, the War in Iraq probably wasn't a great choice, since I haven't seen it do anything for us. It's arguable that nobody knew how the war would effect us financially, and thatwars usually get us out of debt, but doesn't the president have advisors to project these things? Or am I just making that up? *_*; -
I'm going to be a pompous jerk and say that I live really close to NYC so I've been there a few times - in all four seasons. However, I've only been there three times in winter, and once before the holidays. This year, I went to see the Rockettes on Thanksgiving Eve. One year, I saw Phantom of the Opera in February, but that doesn't really count because there's nothing holiday-ish about that. And the other time, I saw Rockefeller center and the ice skating rink (actually, I'm related to the late John and Nelson Rockefellers - I still think I need to buy it back from the Japanese. *_*) and St. Patricks Cathedral. I'm really jealous of Annie though, because she still got to see more than me - I've never seen Times Square in winter (only once in summer), and I've never even been on the Intrepid. *is totally jealous* V_v; Did you feel really happy that you were in NYC and seeing all these things? Every time I go there, I feel happy. Actually, the highlight of my life (so far) was when I went to NYC for the day with a friend from Japan and her cousin who lives in NYC. It makes me feel happy. Am I the only one who feels that way? *_*;
no problem i understand what you meen. and i did kinda make a bad generalization, and for that i apologize.
Oh gosh - I wasn't trying to single you out specifically. Gosh, I'm so sorry. ;____; Yeah, I guess you did make a generalization, but I was really trying to point out that I wasn't making generalizations that way no one would come up to me and say "OMG I HATE U ROXIE!!11 U MAKE GENERALIZATIONS!!1" I'm really sorry if I sounded like I was attacking you. Bah! @_@ *huggle* Bombu lives in Britain? Cool beans.

Gosh - I'm realy retarded. I made this thread, then I saw the boxing day thread, edited this post, then I read the boxing day thread which is being considered advertising right now, so I'll just repost everything I had to say. If the mods decide to merge this with the other thread or whatever, go ahead. I'll keep this here until then. It's so tragic what happened in Southern Asia with the earthquake. For those of you who are still in the dark, and earthquake somewhere from 8.9 to 9.2 (I've heard anywhere in between) struck in the water near Indonesia. It upset the waves, obviously, spreading ripples and causing massive tsunamis in about 10 countries, and the death toll has risen to 22,000 people, according to CNN.com Where were you/how did you find out about the disaster? Thoughts, opinions, reactions? Yesterday I had just finished watching The Bourne Identity (yeah, that's right, I'd never seen it - so what?), and I went into my mom's room to tell her how good the movie was and that I liked it. She said she was glad I enjoyed it, blah blah blah, and then almost extremely factually (kinda like when Trump says "you're fired" - it's so casual) she told me that a tsunami had hit Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and other countries. Well, my dad lives in Bangkok, so my heart sped up and dropped to my knees for a moment. My head was racing, and I thought of how I would get in touch to find out if he's okay. I went online to assess the damage (CNN news), and found out, thank goodness for me, that the wave did not hit Bangkok - just southern Thailand & islands. I sent him an e-mail just to make sure he was okay, asking for a response ASAP. I followed the story lightly today (to be honest, I was still kind of in shock, and incredibly thankful that nothing had happened to him and my stepmom), and he called me - so I had audio proof that he was okay. It's really sad, because so many people lost their lives, and homes. A British friend of his was vacationing there, but he's okay. The beach house of the man who's head of BMW for Thailand was destroyed, and the Royal King of Thailand's grandson was killed on one of the islands. Naturally the papers haven't said anything out of respect for the king (he's a monarch that actually does stuff and doesn't sit on his ***). It's just so sad what happened, and I think it really hit me hard because my dad could have been vacationing. It's really scary to know my dad was so close to the destruction and death. About an hour ago I saw my first actual TV news story about relief and relief funds for the disaster, and since then, I've been instantly jolted out of my state of shock. I've decided that when I go back to school, I'm at least going to try organize a committee and start raising funds during lunch that will go toward the red cross. I guess it's a little selfish, because I'm sure I wouldn't feel so strongly if I didn't know someone close to the disaster, but I'm going to at least try and see if my school will do something like that. Heh. That's crazy Roxanne for you.

How good is America doing in their foreign affairs?
Roxie Faye replied to Morpheus's topic in General Discussion
Is this thread about our Foreign Policy in Iraq, our FP in general, or was this thread a means to creatively title: "For or against the war in Iraq?" I don't really care either way, but I just want to know what I'm supposed to be answering before I answer it. lol. ^_^; (By the way, the title and your post should say "well," not good... sorry *______*)
O1ne used to say that, "The Ultimate act of Patriotism, was following your country right or wrong."Not to hijack a thread or anything, but what do you guys think of that?
Spifftacular question - I could not have thought of anything better to ask. ^_^ I hope Ken (DeathKnight) doesn't mind me quoting him, but I found something in his myO from a long time ago, extremely relevant to this. He had posted an excerpt from Nuremburg Diary The questioner is a psychologist, Gustave Gilbert (given free access to all the prisoners), and the man he is questioning is Herman Goering, one of the most influential men of Nazi Germany. He's practically awaiting death from the trials, etc., this is the end of the line. Here's the excerpt: We got around to the subject of war again and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction. "Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship." "There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars." "Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." *grin* I think that blindly following someone is an extremely dangerous idea. People need to stop doing what they're told, or what they're being fed, and think things for themselves. Needless to say, I guess I would never fit the bill of one who would ever go for the Ultimate act of Patriotism. *_*; -
Party Over Here- New Years, Baby!
Roxie Faye replied to Dragon Warrior's topic in General Discussion
Yay for DragonWarrior - no drunkenness = smarts! ^_^ I don't know what I'm doing for New Year's. I'm either staying home or spend it at my Aunt's house in Massachusettes. If I'm staying home (or if I can be on her computer for a while), I was thinking of celebrating New Year's with all the Otakuites who aren't doing anything either. I was going to name the chat "Obers n friends New Years Eve" - it's an option for anyone who wants to join (and your friends can come too). *shrug* -
I think a lot of people fall for accents from another country simply because they're different. I mean, if you live in New Jersey, how the hell are you going to fall for a New Jersey accent, 1) because you probably can't even hear it and 2) because you hear it all the time - what's so special about it? Obviously that can be applied to any accent, I just used it because I live in NJ. I love most British accents (liverpudlian and cockney aren't my favs. - I know that sounds concieted, oh well), but when I analyze it, it really is because they're so different that from what I hear all the time. Not that that's a horrible thing to like them (gosh if it was I'd be damned to hell), but it's my personal opinion that people like different accents because, well, they're different. ^_^; By the way, I think the same could be true for people from other countries - we like them because they're different (Come on, admit it - you love Orlando Bloom just because he's British. ^_~). Or, all the people you've seen from a particular country happen to be gorgeous, and then you apply it to everyone which isn't a great thing to do - it's taken me four years to learn that generalizations are a big fat no-no. *_* I mean, I could say all British men are good looking because Marc and Gerard are very hot, but that doesn't make what I said true - it would be a generalization. Oh gosh, what was the original question? I do apologize if I've gone horribly off-topic. V_v; *Just decides to leave*

Art Syk3 The Corroded Reindeer [Special Animation For All OB]
Roxie Faye replied to Dragon Warrior's topic in Creative Works
Frickin' awesome, DW! ^_^ I've never seen HTJSC (sad but true, =( ), but Syk3 the Corroded Reindeer was just too funny! I was laughing so hard I'm surprised my sister didn't come down and tell me to shut up. ;_; I absolutely loved the way James came in. It reminded me of a kung-fu/martial arts movie...which somehow reminded me of Kill Bill...which somehow reminded me of Kill Adam. Isn't that weird, considering I don't even know what Kill Adam is about? o_O Talk about strangeness. Time for Naked was absolutely priceless, and DragonWarrior's appearances always steal the show. ^_~ I loved how you solved his problem by giving him plastic surgery - it's kind of a satire on how focused Americans are on such trivial things as appearance, what with all those plastic surgery shows on TV (extreme makeover and the Swan - which takes average looking women and disfigures them > -
I am such a scatter brain. I can't believe I forgot to comment. I'm soooo retarded. *_*;;; Making buildings is incredibly difficult - I'm trying to recreate the Temple to the Emerald Buddha inside the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. Of course, I have a model to follow, but it's still incredibly difficult. The one thing that bugged me though, was the window pane - one of the vertical lines (the middle one) isn't glued down and it sticks out from the window a bit. It's just bothering me, and I almost had the impluse to try and glue it down, but I realized the monitor was in the way. Damn you, computer screen! *hiss* But other than that it's incredibly awesomeness! I commend Gavin for making a building totally from scratch - I could NEVER do that! I really like the pub - it's got this uhm... pub feel to it? O_o Er.... yeah. By the way what material is the actual "structure" of the pub made out of? Just wondering. ^^;

I'm looking for a good CD to ask for, for Christmas. But obviously being non-musically oriented (come on, I listen to J-pop and soundtracks), I haven't got the faintest clue where to start looking for an artist. Oh yeah, BTW, I'm talking about buying a CD in a store - I don't have a CD burner and grokster/Kazzaa is really bad for my computer (not to mention illegal). I either want something techno or something "happy." Techno-ish music: Is depeche mode a good choice? I know some CDs have a different "sound" to them, or so my friend tells me (I didn't even know depeche mode was techno-ish). Which one do you like the best? Happy: I noticed that I own two "happy" CDs in my whole collection. Both of them are by PuffyAmiYumi. Does anybody have any suggestions on other "happy" CDs? (please don't confuse happy with "ashley simpson/britney spears-esque pop.") Thank you for all suggestions - I appreciate them greatly, as I know nothing about music artists. ^_^;
-
What do I want this Christmas? Well, I feel really bad about asking for stuff this Christmas because I asked my mom for a coach bag ($170), and she said she'd also get me Sims2, which is $50. I feel really bad when she spends a ton of money on me. :( Plus, she's also getting me the other things I asked for, including pajamas, and the sheetmusic book for Piano of A Rush of Blood to the Head, along with some other things I can't remember. I don't really have a big family, and my mom isn't a believer in keeping family traditions after a year or two of making them, so I asked for socks this year. Not just plain white socks, but as a stocking stuffer, I asked if she would get me crazy christmas-themed socks, like she does every year! ^_^; The best present? Probably everything, when I was little. My dad got me a Barbie jeep cruiser one year - I still have it, but the batteries need to be replaced. I like everything I get, too. I never seem to hate everything. ^_^ The worst? I really like all my presents, because I know my mom worked hard for the money to buy them. Some of them are completely useless, but I just can't hate them. O_o; -Response to comments- Juuthena - what/who is bruno? *tilts head* QA: DDR for Xbox? Does it come on Xbox? Wow - I'm retarded. All my friends play it on PS2. Make sure you ask for a mat, as well as the game (or ask someone else for the mat). I remember barbies fondly, as well. They're still good today, because if you keep the "specialty" barbies, they'll be worth a lot down the road. Sara - I saw your list. You like books, don't you? Tell me how "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" is, if you get it. I heard it was supposed to be entertaining, as well as um... gramatical? O_o; I have a favor to ask you: I want a book (s) for Christmas, but I don't know which one, since I finished almost every Diana Wynne Jones book I know of. I'm into fantasy, or I want to get into mystery/adventure, or even Mythology. Got any suggestions, or are those not your type? CHW: Apaloosa crossed with a pony/shire breed? Crazy. I love the coloring of an Apaloosa though, so I hope you get the horse - that sounds amazing! I have an inclination for riding tall ponies rather than a normal sized horse, probably because I'm short. I wanted a pony for my birthday when I was little, but I guess that never happened. ;_; It's okay - I only learned to ride when I was in Fifth/sixth grade, so I don't know what I would have done with it. lol.

Ouija boards are both scary and hilarious. I agree with Angelus Necare - I'm sure a long time ago, Ouija boards were a good way to channel the dead, like a seance, but anybody who's using a parker brother's board (Come one, the logo is right on the box) needs a reality check. My cousin told me she and her friends were going to hold a seance using a ouija board in a suspected haunted house, one summer evening. I can't remember if they went or if her friends chickened out, but purposely looking for trouble with spirits (which I do believe in, thank you very much) by holding a frickin' seance, you must be really dumb. That's just as bad as the time my other cousin (her brother) made me walk through a cemetary at night to get to a playground so we could play a version of manhunt. -_-; On the way back, he also ran though the cemetary, and eventually stopped when I started crying because I didn't know the way back. X_X; Eh, but I guess that's a little off-topic. When I was little, like in elementary school, I used to play with a Ouija board (I think we threw ours away - OMG the "Ouija spirits" are coming to get meee! lol). None of my friends could ever sit still long enough to even get our hands to tremble. Besides, we always thought we were supposed to close our eyes - so no one could ever really see whatever it might have spelled. Whenever it did spell something, you could tell it was someone purposely pushing the little mover around.

It's late at night, I'll probably ammend this tomorrow, I haven't even started looking up resources because it's late at night but I just wanted to point something out: On this last page mostly, this is what I've been hearing. Most of the people in Israel/Palestine want Peace. But there's a small few on both sides who don't want peace. And because of those small few, there IS no peace, and there cannot be any peace. In the world of logic, this make no sense, but obviously, in real time, it makes perfect sense because hardly anything is every logical. I don't think that a peaceful solution to this problem will ever be supported by absolutely everyone on every side, and that if the majority of the people want peace, then negotiations need to resume regardless of what those crazy minorities say. But if the ultimate goal is not peace, then by all means keep on fighting until every single one of the people in that area is dead. Either that, or until some crazy person goes ahead and nukes the whole place, which is the same thing in less time. By the way, everyone has been saying Arafat was basically (which means the following is a bit oversimplified but gets the point across) a war-hungry leader. Which he was (whoever gave him that Nobel prize deserves to be shot). I might be entirely wrong about this, but wasn't Sharon a bit war-hungry leader, too? If the answer to that is yes, then that leads me back to my original point: that everyone seems to want/believe that the Israelis and Palestinians will continue fighting until there's no one left. If the answer to that war-hungry leader question is no, then you can ignore the last paragraph. Terribly sorry. ^^;; P.S.: Lady_Rin: I read an article somewhere, I think it was National Geographic for Kids, a couple years ago. It was about a school in Israel/Palestine that has Palestinian and Israeli students, and each classroom has two teachers - one from each side of the conflict. The students must know both languages (arabic and Hebrew), and Palestinian students who have become friends with Israeli students, or vice versa, visit the house of their friend to come over and play, etc. I thought that school was really cool, and that there needs to be more of those in the region. ^_^

Gosh. I'm kinda of afraid to post now, because I'm pretty sure I'll screw up this thread. Okay, I'm going to try not to. *_*; I'm going to start by responding to some things that were mainly on page one. I didn't know about this thread until after Ken posted, so sorry. > -
idiotic things that people say about relationships
Roxie Faye replied to foreverinfinity's topic in General Discussion
From the view point of etiquette and manners you never ask a woman her age or ask her to make a reference to it. You can offend many women this way. On the other hand they are women and am a girl. If I was a woman I wouldn't be here.

The dumbest thing? Baron Samedi asking Rins age. I'm surprised she didn't put you into time out.
You're the one who brought up the whole age difference, so why shouldn't Baron ask the age difference between you and Ranger? He wasn't asking your age - it was a valid question that I'm sure any moderator would agree it was. You can't be dim witted enough not to think nobody would want to know the age difference between the two of you. There was no need to use an accusatory tone to "educate him" on his "lack of so-called manners." And by the way, Ranger wasn't very nice, just to let you know. Baron wasn't being mean, thusly, there really wasn't a need for that response. Why don't we all just apologise and move on. Actually, I'm suprised a mod hasn't closed this yet since it's becoming a full blown out arguement. And I'm sorry if you take this offensively - I'm just trying to point out that Baron does have a good point. Have a nice day. ^_^; -

Yes, James really bashed Kuja. I used to worship his quote-reply-quote-reply style to no end. As a matter of fact, it's a great style of verbal combat. I can't wait for The Cafe At the Edge of the World, Gavynn! ^_^ I would love to see how and if the banned members return to Otaku Hollow. P.S.: Doesn't the house in the picture remind anyone of the Wizard of Oz and the Tornado? Uber freaky/cool. ^^; -

Haha. ^^; I think you're an awesome writer and artist, Gavynn. I can't wait for your Christmas animation! ^__^ P.S.: *Sigh* It's incredibly sad when OB members don't know who kuja is (I hope you're all just pulling my leg - but the below is just incase you're not. > -

Pick one and go with it. ~_~; Other than that, I loved it - it was very funny! Of course, Gavynn is always funny, but funnier than usual. ^_^; I'm contemplating asking for a cameo in chap. 5, but I'm afraid what will happen if you write me in. >_ -

It's thanksgiving and I finally have time to reply. ^_^; Your story kepts me in stiches, especially the part with Zidargh. I was surprised I didn't show up at that strip club - I'm eternally thankful for it. ~_~; I have my suspicions about who the postless banner is, but I can't wait for the next chapter!! ^__^ -
Haven't made anything in a long time. I started these banner/images a long time ago, but I never finished them. I got stuck on the third image, because I didn't know what to do. I finally finished it yesterday, so now I'm showing them off. ^^;; I'm calling them banner/images because they're too big to be banners, and not quiet big enough to be a normal image size. 2/3 of all images were made in GIMP and the other 1/3 in MS Paint. I just really don't like Gimp's interface, so for adding the border, and chopping off pieces, I used MS Paint. The highlighting, though, was just dodge and burn. These are really my first GIMP banners, so I didn't know a lot of things to do with them. (I also just discovered the filters on GIMP yesterday - I'm so retarted. *_*;;; ) Here are the banner/images; copy and paste the URL: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/RoxieFaye/Threebanners.png

Man, Angelus_necare, you never post anymore. I remember Mist, too, what a great writer. I remember all the Digipeeps, too. D_M, Nerdsey, Cera (hahahah), Shy, Ginny, Baron, C_l (where did she go off to?), Nadau, Solo, and others. Great times. Deedlit - I remember when you had to earn your custon avatar, too. I was so intent at trying to honorably earn that 500 posts and I was freaking pissed off when I earned it, because that's when James decided to let everyone have a custom avvie. ¬___¬; I've only had one former user name, so I think everyone knows who I am. It was the username I had used on an old HP message board that didn't let you use spaces or caps in your name, so I was "roxieortatiana." I remember Tony asking me about that like... last year. Oh gosh. lol. And also, I totally agree with Baron and Corey. That's all I have to say about that. *sad smile*

Yay! Witch witch witch! They are very cool, and now that you are thirteen you should definately be a witch for this Halloween. (The 13 bit makes it even cooler, since that's such a spookay number. lol. ^_^)
-
Rhian - oohh, dress up as Hermione! ^_^ I was a witch one year - I didn't look like Hermione, but I was inspired by her & Harry Potter. Yayness! ^^ Methuselah - you should totally dress up as Davis. Digimon is awesome, and Davis is one of my most favorite characters. He's such a vivid character with a grrreat personality! This halloween, I'm dressing up as Alice McCoy. Anybody care to venture a guess what anime she's from (fans of it should know - *looks at Solo, Shy, Baron, and others, hint hint*)? The total brightside is that Alice is such a goth character with all black, so it's kinda Halloween-ish, but not so outrageous that everybody would know I was an anime character. At least I'm not going to be B.T. (.hack//SIGN), which I had been debating. Here's a link to a picture of her (and if this doesn't give away the anime, you obviously have never seen it, which is a travesty. http://myladydragon.brinkster.net/~alicemccoy/im01.jpg ) I'm definately going trick or treating this year. Last year my mom wouldn't let me go. She said: "YOU'RE TOO OLD AND YOU'RE NOT GOING!!!1111 one!!11" but ALL my friends went, last year, so I'm still going to. Yay!!! ^___^

Yeah, I know, all the old members are like... gone. Ginny's gone, Sephiroth's gone (remember when we all said he couldn't leave? lol), and to make matters worse, half the people I've assumed are gone, are still thriving on OB, and are just being too annoying to inform everyone else of the user name they've assumed for the mext ten minutes - shorter (can you believe it), than J Lo's marriages. I barely remember you as a vague face, and I have no idea if you've been here longer than I have. You've been gone a long time. lol. Welcome back. This place is addictive, isn't it?

That was a very interesting take on death, and a well written short story. I agree that a lot of people unnecessarily fear death. I loved the mythological references to the river Styx. Does that mean you believe in the underworld/Hades, or was the boat in your story going to a more Christian-type-esque purgatory? Is that a dumb question to ask? I don't mean it to be, I was just interested. *_*;
