Do your parents make you do everything!?
Roxie Faye replied to mononoke_man's topic in General Discussion
Okay, so I read it wrong. My bad!
Well, actually, that's what I was pretty sure he meant; I don't know if my interpretation's 100% correct. I happen to think it is. =P ^_~ *cough* I was referring to everyone in general, as well. >.> -
I think it's one of those philisophical things that humans cook up for themselves. Not to say it's a ridiculous idea - 'cause it's not, but perhaps literary writers decided that names were powerful things to be recokoned with? I've also read a book where this god-like being had two otehr names, a lesser and a greater, and if you said them, they would come to aid you (er... they aided this one character who knew their names). Also, look at Spirited Away. Yubaba took Chihiro's name, and it sealed a contract; only if Chihiro could remember her name could she leave. Actually, that's one of the premises of the movie - since Haku couldn't remember his real name. Names identify you, they set you apart from an immediate group (Immediate because there are tons of people who carry the same name as you). Humans have always liked being thought as separate individuals. It's our nature. Or it's probably something psychological. Ask Freud. I don't think names quite literally/physically hold power over people, but maybe on a deeper mental level they do. It is true that when somebody calls your name, you turn around to look; or you respond to it. And though I'd prefer not to share the details, know that my true name used to hold power over me in some weird way. :P

Do your parents make you do everything!?
Roxie Faye replied to mononoke_man's topic in General Discussion
Okay. Let me clarify that statement for everything: This topic isn't about doing for your parents, it's about what your siblings aren't doing. And it's also about preferential treatment. Er... That's what I think Okibi means. Why do parents single you out to do all the chores? See? Unfair treatment. And I have to agree; not that I've ever been subjected to it, perse, but the idea of preferential treatment is bizarre and unfair. Actually, no, I take that back. There's some of preterential treament in my family towards me (I'm the one who gets everything) and I'm still pissed off about it. For any of you with sarcastic comments right now, this doesn't mean I'm spoiled. It means I believe in being fair and just. I think it's totally unfair that my dad adores me and he doesn't like my sister. And I have a shrewed idea why, and it's even more unfair, then. I don't like to see people unhappy, or being treated unfairly, and that's why I don't like it. I'd like to say a couple things about chores: They're not so bad in themselves, but again, when you're the only one being made to do anything, it's pretty annoying. And yes, taking the trash out is a big deal, especially when there's rabid racoons situated near the end of the driveway and your parents, knowing this, still make you take our the trash. =P -
I presume it's because you're a "New Member" and not a regular one yet; though a mod will probably come along to clarify this. I do know you become a member after a certain number of posts, so if you just keep posting you'll get there soon.

Yes, I do. It's call being an optimist, you arse. Loving everyone is also called being Christian, so you can just forgive people for being that too. -_-; So maybe you aren't exactly as sunny and bright as No_Regrets. It doesn't mean you can go around attempting to instigate fights. 'cuz that's just annoying. _> Mmk? Cool. :) I've never been shunned for being Christian, but my mom freaked out when she found out that my friend uses magic, too. She's like "OMG IT'S BLASPHEMY B/C SHE WAS BAPTIZED CHRISTIAN!!11!!" -____-; Super annoying, totally not open to other ideas. She's sooo old Catholic with some nutty ideas; I just won't get into it. I've also noticed that the north east coast is very liberal, and as you go out west, towards the mid-west, everyone's really conservative; and some of what people have said, just prove it. It's amazing how close minded some people can be. O-o;

Well all of you suck, right about now, because i'm not even out of school yet! How early did you people (erm... those in public high schools) manage to get out of school so early? The feds require 180 days; y'all musta started really early. I still have tomorrow, and another week left of school. And three of those five days are FINALS, which I'm freaking out about because I'm an overachiever and a frosh. It doesn't help that I've been told "they're not so bad" by everyone; I'm still freaking out. I think I'll fill the endless hours of boredom with babysitting, friends, and writing stories. I plan to finish two novel length stories by the end of August. ¬.¬

Perhaps you live in NZ or Australia, Ocean? I'm assuming Emme lives in the USa (if i'm wrong, do correct me). Unfortunately, it's only Wednesday night, so you (and I) will have to wait another day to find out. ^^;;;; I'm really proud that you started to eat a lot more, again! It's like Harry said; you're so used to starvation, that your body can't handle normal quantities of food. But thats not an excuse to stick with 500 calories a day. Here's a suggestion (you don't have to follow it, though): Maybe aim to eat 750-1000 calories for two whole weeks, and try not to work out to burn all of it off (if you really want to excersize, don't burn it all off). Then, the next two weeks, go for 1000-1250, etc. I have no idea if that would work, and you don't have to, but you can try that approach. I do want to make clear, though, that I'm really proud that you've tried eating normal amounts. Score another one for Emme! ^_^ -
There's tons of characters I relate to. Somewhat. If any of you remember my early days, I was, and still am Mistress of Darkness, Tsarina of Hearts, and the Angel of Silence. And I've finally found anime characters that I think represent those figures (in looks, anyways). Miyu from Vampire Princess Miyu for Mistress of Darkness; Oruha from Clover as Tsarina of Hearts; and Subaru from .hack//SIGN as the Angel of Silence. As to characters who actually have my personality? Um... Doujima from WHR, because we're both chatty and very bubbly (although my work ethic is pretty much the opposite). I also identify with Mimiru for that reason; she's so upbeat, happy, and kinda naive - like me! And of course, Ken Ichijouji and Quatre Raberba Winner are my #1 and #2 Bishonen. I "fell in love" with them (you know, as characters), because of their personality. They're so kind and caring, which I think, is how I am. Ken is very considerate, and has the crest of Kindness (oh the irony! - for you Digimon fans). And Quatre? Well he could be lying half dead, and still fight because he wouldn't want anyone to worry about him. Okay, so maybe I'm not kind to that extreme, but extremely kind. And that about sums it up. :p

I'm really sorry to hear that things didn't work out with your boyfriend, but I'll tell you that I still stand by my advice. I think it's good that you found out where he stands - now you can find someone better who isn't so insensitive. I wouldn't go back to him if I were you. Lonliness is really tough (like I've said - trust me: I know), but why would you hang around someone who doesn't like you because of your problems? When someone likes you only when it's convinient for them, it's called a fair weather friend (or in your case, boyfriend). And if it's any consolation to you, Koreans > Chinese. And I'm half Chinese. I think they are too fierce in their cultural additude sometimes (they know when you're not Chinese - or even when you're ABC - American Born Chinese! ¬.¬). Besides, many Koreans are Christian, which is cool. (Not that Buddhism isn't, but I relate better to those who share my religion, for some reason. O.o;) As for the shrink part, don't be nervous. They're not there to intimidate you (and if they do, they're not the counselor for you). Some places have games in their office for kids, teens, and I guess, adults. Since I'm sure you don't know if the therapist has games, bring a deck of cards and ask if they will play with you for half the session. Or, if you and they are really good at multi-tasking, ask if you can talk over playing cards. =) If things don't seem to resolve themselves in the first couple sessions, be patient. Lack of self-confidence is the number one problem of women (....which can lead to Anorexia and other diseases). It took my sister three years to realize her self-worth, and I'm.still.working.on.it... V_V; -

I'm glad to hear you're getting help. If you don't like your counselor, ask your mom if you can go to another one. If she gets mad or anything, put it this way: why pay someone who's not helping you? exactly. As for marijuana, try to avoid situations where you know your friends will be using it. Yeah, that sounds pretty stupid, but if you know they always do it at a certain time or place, just don't go. If you meet them, and they're smoking, say no. Be casual about it. Just say "Nah, I'm trying to quit." and then of course, try to leave. Chances are, they won't push you to smoke anything. I've been told that drug users are somewhat greedy; they're rather keep their joints and pipes for themselves. I'm really glad that you took a step in the right direction to see a counselor. You're getting better by the minute, and I really admire that you were able to ask for help, to help yourself. I want your courage. ¬_¬ -
With this newfangled invention called ?cable?, and the 24-hour news networks it has spawned, there simply doesn?t seem to be enough real news to report. Celebrity antics fill the downtime, and apparently people care. I personally could care less who dumped whom or which actor got a role in which movie. The only reason I?d even think of paying attention to these silly people and their pathetic lives would be so that I can compete in the next edition of trivial pursuit.
Exactly. a couple years ago in music class (it's more music appreciation/ music through the 20th century), my teacher told me how one of those 24 hour news chanels were reporting on the case of a missing girl, around 11 or so. And right in the middle of it, they interrupted the story to cover live footage of the wedding of one of the Beatles! (I think it was Paul? o-o;) But I mean, imagine, that's the extent of how much the media is all over hollywood. They interrupted a legitimate story to broadcast some nonsense. Who CARES who Paul married - there's a little missing girl out there! How tradigic that our society cares more about celebrities than they do real people.

I'd like you to know that it's not your fault, and it's okay that you can't stop your Eds. I mean, the disease themselves are bad, but a lot of people have a hard time overcoming it themselves. It's not a weakness, it's nothing you should feel bad about; and whoever deserts you because of it is an arse. I would suggest going to back to therapy, to help you. If you didn't like your last therapist, find a new one. And yes, weed is most definately bad for you. Just don't do it. Really. Don't. >_>; I agree with what Dan L said; talk to someone you know, whether it's your mom, or a friend, or your boyfriend. It's no good to carry all this on your own, and you really need someone whom you can see on a regular basis. I understand how afraid you are of your bf or friends leaving you, if you told them. Really, I do understand what having no friends is like - I'm going through something with it, now; but I'd rather have no friends than ones who don't like who I am. There's my two cents. If you wanna talk privately, you can always PM me. =) -
Nobody[/i'] has perfect English, really. Even those of us who might be better with English in general (or more comfortable with it) will still make mistakes.
Very true. You've seen me in AIM chats, right, James? Anybody who has, knows I have NO grip on the english language. You're doing better than me, Ani_Freak. *laughs at self*
In terms of why people would want to be Mods...I can't answer that question. But I can tell you that whenever I ask someone to be a Moderator here, they usually don't see it coming and they are usually very humble about it.
That just about sums it up. In terms of my own modding experiences, most of the time I didn't see coming (except for the one, at another forum, that I applied for; duh). I'm always really shocked, and grateful. I remember the time I was freaking out, spazzing like a nut when someone asked me to be an admin. heh. (and no, I don't pride myself on that; if you'all knew the circumstances you'd understand.)
This is not to say that OtakuBoards has not had its share of staff-members-gone-wrong, or simply normal members who were rather abrasive in wanting to be a moderator, heh. I can think of a few names off the top of my head.
haha. The good ol days of people like that. I think the part in the rules about "report mod abuse if you see it" was added after a certain mod was un-moded (v4 or 5 I think). and I still have his ban thread. O_o; Yes, I have seen power hungry mods and admins on other boards, and really mean ones too. At one forum, I made a suggestion about sig image limit, in the suggestions forum, and they yelled at me. O_o They thougth they were so high and mighty, too, because one of the mods had a semi-large image. It wasn't the one I was referring to, but she took it that way, and in her "yell at Roxie" post, she asked me if I was referring to her in a way that implied "go one, I dare you to challenge a mod." Hookay. after a couple spats about that with them, I didn't go back.

Urgh, I know how you feel about Kerry. He's dawdling behidn in this campign trail. I mean, jeeze, this is what he's like: "I'm runnign for president, but I don't know where I stand on the issues. But vote for me!" I'd vote for him anyways because his name isn't Bush, but there's so many people who vote on the way they feel about the issues. Kerry needs to win those votes (that's my opinion), and he's being an idoit about running for Prez. right now.

Are we talking about being mods in general, or on OB, specifically? I'm assuming in general, so I will base my post off that. If people knew that you had problems with the english language, I'm sure they would be more accepting, helpful, and less critical. I joined a Spanish message board, and I told them right off the bat that I'm "estado unidense" so they know, for the future. It is also quite unfortunate that some mods think they're the greatest person in the world, but I just shrug it off. You could always create stories in which they burn. :P P.S: did any mods criticize your posts on OB? If so, PM me with their names. I'll smack them silly. As to the answering the question in the title, first off, I love having power, I just do. To be able to help people out with that, however small, is a really great thing for me. It also irks me when I see really poorly constructed posts (I mean, people who's first language is English, but "takl liek dis"), so if I can help correct them in a courteus manner, that makes me happy. lol. And secondly, the staff forum. I guess if I never was a mod on a board, I could live without it, but if you join a board and get appointed mod instantly(by a friend, presumably), you live with the staff forum. I've had that happen, and then I've been fired or I stepped down (I don't remember, it doesn't matter), and I felt so empty without the staff forum. It felt like I was missing something, and I was convinced everyone was talking about me in the staff forum (sometimes I'm convinced they do that here to - "OMG, Roxie is sooo annoying. Can't we ban her for that, Charles?" lol). Besides, who would want to miss the chance to be able to see a whole forum of spam? Can't beat that! :)

I didn't meant that Bank Holiday was the same as memorial day, but just the event that people do sound the same. heh. I also kind of like the idea of a saints day, instead of a birthday. It reminds me of all souls and all saints day. We had to do a really big thing about El dia de los muertos (I think that's what it's called) back in October. It actually sounds pretty cool, to honor the dead of your family. I don't really remember too much about it, but I think you make bread for the dead, and you also make a three tiered altar for the desceased. I made one for a Spanish project, but the ones people make for real are amazing. I've seen picture of them, and they're so ornate. You decorated the tiers with three colors of tissue paper- white, purple, and pink (I forget why), and a cross of ashes, and there are four purple candles on the top tier, three little skulls on the middle tier, and a big skull on the bottom tier. You place fruits and flowers, alcohol if the deceased person liked it, etc. on the tiers of the alter (or on the top one), and a picture of the person goes at the top. It's really quite amazing. If you know anything about this day, I'd be delighted if you'd share. =)

Celebrities aren't so important to me, though I will not deny my obession with Gregory Smith or Chistopher Marquette (Ephram from "Everwood" and Adam from "Joan of Arcadia", respectively). To be honest with you, I never really understood why people piad so much attention to celebrities. And when I was younger, I didn't even know who Brad Pitt was (even now, my understanding of him is somewhat a rather vague notion). I think that because the media through TV and *cough* sometimes illegal downloads or boradcasting on the 'net, celebrities are seen so much. We seem them playing this fabulous role, and think they're the best actor or actress in the world, or we hear their music, and it's the most ingenious thing you've ever heard. So you say "wow, I think I'd like to know the person who plays this role/ plays this music". But there's close to 7 billion other people who see tons of OTHER actors/actresses/musicians and they say the same thing. And so it begins. Everybody wants to know about this person, or that person. That's where it all starts. Then you get the really obsessed people (the fans), and the news, by definition, is required to update you on anything new happening so you find out about celebrities from there. And then because everyone else wants to know about this fabulous actor/actress/musician/famous person, the paparazzi decides they can make money off of it/ Then children are born into the world of all thsoe who are "star struck" as this thread title suggests. So they accept it as a part of life and the cycle of obsession and privacy invasion by the media continues, and sometimes gets even worse. It starts by becoming mildy interested in someone because of something they've acted, sang, or whatever, and eventually, everything becomes encompassing. Well, that's what I think. P.S.: Welcome back to the OL forum. Your topic will most assuredly generate discussion, as they always do. =)
Education: Bush has a plan, Kerry does not.
Do the research and ask public school teachers what they think. They'll tell you that Bush has one of the worst education plans. The No Child Left Behind Act is not what this country needs. A while ago, and English teacher at my school submitted an article to the Newspaper. Here is a quote from it on the NCLB: "How dare you.......because we see through the sham that is the No Child Left Behind Act, because we realize that this is merely a smokescreen to push a voucher system throughout the country, because we choose to object to an unfunded mandate that depends solely on test scores and false adequate yearly progress indicators, because our lobbyists are working to make substantive changes to the NCBL that will make the law work for our children, because we realize that true form lies in the hearts and hand of America's Educators and not it's politcians? How dare you?" My mother is a teacher; I do not support Bush's stupid plan, and like TN said, Kerry with potentional for a plan is better than a bad plan already tried.
Morality: Bush is against abortion, gay marriage, irrational liberalism, ect. Kerry is for all of these things.
It's really a matter of opinion on those, and whether or not you follow the Bible down to every last punctuation mark. Your remark is not really...legitimate? o-o; I'm struggling to find the correct word for it.
By the way: THE UNITED STATES NEEDS NO ******* BACKING FROM THE "INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY" TO DO ANYTHING! We are the last super power! And we can do anything we damn well please! GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!
Hookay... Those are the kinds of statements that makes us all look like pompous morons to the rest of the world. And BTW, we are NOT the only superpower in the world, lol. N. Korea would probably wipe us out in a second. o-o; (not that we couldn't, but they're more likely to use their bombs), and then we wouldn't be a superpower. :D
I think that our government has gone to hell.
Wow. At least I'm not the only one who thinks that. Thank goodness. lol.
we have given up rights that never should have been taken away.

Which rights, out of curiosity?[/size']
I assume he's referring to the patriot act, which basically says the government can tap all phone calls on pay phones (haven't you seen the stickers on those things?) and hold a "suspected terrorist" longer than 48 hours with out an attorney, and a bunch of other ludicrious things that DIRECTLY violates right guaranteed under the constitution, I believe. Damn you Bush administration. Where do you get off violating our rights as citizens of the US? P.S.: Love your view on political mud slinging, DeathBug. =)

Ooo. Sounds like fun. Bank Holiday sounds like things like Memorial day weekend if you ask me. Memorial day is to commemorate those who've fought in wars (even those who've died). We get the last monday in May off. Not all but some families go down to the shore on Saturday, here in Jersey, and swim and then drive back on Monday. We never get cool fireworks except *sometimes* on Memorial Day and of course, the 4th of July, which is when we sing patriotic songs and have a barbecue at someone's house, and go swimming if they have a pool. Then after the fireworks, you say "God Bless America" and go home. English people have so many chances to look at fireworks and fire. You even get Guy Fawkes night. -.-; We can't even set off fireworks in New Jersey. Against the stupid law. Woo for holidays where you don't have to go to school! =)
-
Ugh. All of you are going to cool places, like foreign countries. My dad wanted to take me to Europe or Thailand but of course my mom's like "NO! YOU'RE NOT GOING!" which translates into "I'm spite-ing your father by not letting you go" which of course, isn't fair to me. And those stupid people had to bomb a train in Madrid, so that's her "other" excuse not to let me go. -__-; If you don't go anywhere on the 11th, you'll be fine! Hopefully the library will hire me this summer so I don't go out of my mind and so I make money. I'll probably go to Boston for a week to visit cousins, in August. BTW, I wish school got out as early as it does for you college kids. Finals are June 14, 15, and 16. Please pray I don't fail. v_v

As an ever-optimistic, maybe a third party will get an electoral vote in a state one day! Or not. But I do remember people doing "Nader traders" last year, so that Nader would gain more votes in one state, rather than random votes across the country. If John Kerry doesn't getting into office, I'm demanding a recount. Really. At least he never choked on a pretzel (though I guess it isn't really fair to bring that up. I do stupid things like that all the time. But then again, I'm not running the country, now am I...).
-
This is probably the stupidest thread in here in a while, but I've been dying to make this thread for a long time. I never seem to remember to make it. but now I have. (either that, or I made it and don't remember making it. in which case ya'll can close this). The thought occured to me a long time ago that America wasn't the only country in the world (*gasp!* I'm still trying to overcome my egotism [/sarcasm]). Actually, I wanted to know what sorts of holidays other countries celebrated. In fact, AJeh told me a few weeks ago about an English Bank Holiday Monday (er... is that it?), where you get a few mondays off every month, which is cool. And there's a Thai New Year in April called Sonkrahn, where you basically shoot everyone with water guns and smear their faces with talcom power for three days. So would anyone be kind enough to enlighten me on different holidays, other than American? ^^;;;;;;;;;;

My dad knows I like anime and he was telling me about a Japanese cartoon (what I interpreted to mean "anime"). He said it was called Mr. Ikkyu (ikkyu-san in Japanese, probably). I myself have never, ever head of it, so if you absolute otakus know about this, that would be great. Edit: well excuse me for not using a search engine. I just thought that someone on OB might know more about it.

Oh.My.GOD! *flips out!* Wai! It's a Digimon thread! I LOVE DIGIMON!!!!!!! WAH! ^_____^ Ken Ichijouji/ The Kaiser (Emperor) is my favorite character of all time. He's at the top of my Bishi list! Oh.MY.GOD! I'm sure some of you older (more like ancient, now, right?) fans remember my obsession with him! I believe my first banner ever was that made in MS Paint, and it said "Can you say Kenanne?" I remember thinking that was THE greatest banner EVER! XD Ken is like... TOTALLY mine (ooohh, remember Ginny, anyone? Lol). I am SO glad this thread was made. It reminds me of all the great times in the Digimon forum. I think Devidramon's rants finally convinced me that Season three was the best, and I believe it really is. Like Solo said, the feel was totally different from S1 or S2, and a refreshing change. And the characters all developed quite well, I'd say. The best part was when Myotismon DIDN'T appear. Actually, the best part was the ending. That was absolutely great when Takato, well.... you know, if you saw the last ep. ^^;;; I loved the way Rika developed, and Henry was just all around awesome. I loved the way Terriermon was so much opposite his personality, too. The only thing I think was a little too cliched was the hinting of a ryuki (Ryo x ruki/Rika) pairing. Not that I don't like the couple, but I like Jenryuki (Jenrya/Henry x Ruki/Rika) as well. They seem great together, to me. My second favorite season, was of course 02. It was quite dull, actually, but Davis was such a fab. character, and that's why I liked it so much. He wasn't just comic relief, but man, if you think about he, he's the one who saved the world not being caught in MaloMyotismon's trap. I feel that he got a very bad rap because of the way Kari treated him. If anything, I was mad at her. It seemed to me that she hung out with Davis before TK appeared, and when he got on the scene, she just totally pushed Davis aside. But hey, that's just my opinion. O.- Sorry if I was so scatterbrained during this post. I'm so excited to see a Digimon thread. DEJIMON FOREVER! ^_^

Bush is absolutely bonkers if you ask me, so I'd vote for Kerry, if I could. ^^;;; These are my.personal reasons. so don't start yelling at me for them, mmkay? (I mean, you can reply and we can debate it nicely, but I don't feel like having my head ripped off.) I don't quite like Bush because I feel that going to war was completely unjustified, and furthermore, he couldn't even wait for the international community's backing?!? I feel like we've totally isolated ourselves from every country besides England, because they're just cool like that. I think there's something wrong with that whole family. Jebb (sp?) has basically said that it's okay for illegal aliens to recieve the same benefits as citizens (I htink it's because of his wife, if you ask me). He's also said that it's okay for a family to adopt and be absolutely unfit to raise a child, as long as they're not a gay couple. -__-; Biggot. I think some of his cabinet members are nuts, too. Ashcroft is crazy (was he the one who put in the patriot act? Charles says it's Rumsfeld and I think he's right), and Rumsfeld is too narrow-minded for me, personally. I'm also very irritated at how Bush and his campaign is attacking Kerry's war record. How dare you even attempt to say he didn't earn those medals when daddy made sure you weren't sent over there! My mother and I, and I think my sister, as well, feel very strongly about this, because my uncle served in Vietnam. That's partly why my mother is voting for him. And because he's from Massachusettes, and she likes people from there. o-o; While I think Kerry looks very good compared to Bush, he needs to quicken the pace on his campaign. All he's doing is playing defense with Bush. He hasn't seemed to have an offensive, or more active campaign. Hopefully he'll pick up the pace, soon. Oh, and also, I'd vote for Kerry because he has the lucky initials. I forget what his middle name is, but they're JFK. =)
