Though I'm still madly in love with AFI, I'm going to post about some of my other interests. At the moment, I think I'd consider Placebo my second favorite band. I've probably been listening to them for about two years now, and I have the Sleeping With Ghosts album and two other songs. I love Brian Molko's unique voice, despite it sounding like he has a very bad cold. Their songs are mostly upbeat and are a lot of fun to sing along with. One of my favorites would have to be "Pure Morning," because my friends and I sing it to each other a lot in that nasally voice Brian uses. Another favorite is the Misfits. I haven't been listening to them as long as my other most cherished bands, but they're really fun as well. Danzig's voice is one one of the best male voices I've heard, and his lyrics are very campy and dark. The songs are very simple to play, but they're really catchy. There's just something amazing about singing "I turned into a martian, wooooaahhooh, I can't even recall my name, WOAAH." Part of the reasom I love the Misfits is probably because of how much they influenced AFI in their earlier years, though. Now, my most recent favorite is Smashing Pumpkins. I was making a playlist for my friend, and she told me to put the song "Zero" on it. So, I downloaded it, along with "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight." I ended up loving Zero so much (having heard the other two on the radio several times) that when my cousin let me use his iTunes gift card, the first thing I bought was Smashing Pumpkins' Greatest Hits. Some favorites from that CD are "Zero," of course, and "Tonight, Tonight," but also "Ava Adore," "1979," "Disarm," and their cover of "Landslide." EDIT - Drat, I forgot some. London After Midnight - A very amazing goth band. I first heard their entire Psycho Magnet album on Launchcast Radio two or so years ago and I fell in love. The dark lyrics and cold ambience make them absolutely perfect to listen to when trying to write a story about vampires. My favorites include "Kiss," "Where Good Girls Go to Die," "Carry On Screaming," "Hate!" "Letter to God," and "Claire's Horrors" (which is cool because it has my name in it). Siouxsie and the Banshees - This band has been classified as pioneers of both punk and goth music. I think I first heard them on Launchcast Radio, too, back when I was in eighth grade. Siouxsie Sioux has a very memorable voice, and it's really just a great, fun band in general. Hands down, my favorite song is "Cities in Dust."

The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2006 (Nominations Thread)

What?: The Moderators Why?: These people are absolutely amazing (and not just because I'm one of them :P). Otakuboards is probably the smartest, most well-organized message board I've ever been to, and the moderator staff (and higher, of course) all help keep it together. It's not just work work work, though. Sure, we're like the police of OB, but there is a ton of hilarity and fun that ensues behind the scenes. I'm very happy to be on the team, and not just for the cookies and partying. Those are just a nice bonus. That might be the only one from me. I wish I could come up with more but at the moment I'm avoiding working on a research paper. -

"I've been to Ireland and there aren't any fricken' shamrocks." "The Crusades were basically just a bunch of peasants yelling 'Come guys, we gotta go get Jerusalem back!' and running all over the place." "Well, you could just wrap yourself up in fireworks and die." Student: "Don't you think it would be cool if they called you Kathy the Great?" Teacher: "They already do, I thought you knew that."
All of those courtesy of my AP World History teacher. She's absolutely amazing. There aren't really any famous quotes I really like.

Let's Abolish Profanity in Adventure Square/Reform thread
However I would disagree about merging it into the Media Otaku Category as it would seem to create one slightly mammoth forum containing gaming, art, literature, music, films and TV, which is a bit much.
I agree with this. In one of my earlier posts I mentioned thinking to call the addition of literary discussion to Music, Movies & TV "uninteractive entertainment" to differientiate between it and Play It and PC/Mac. Of course, that's a rather unwieldy name, but it summarizes the media that would be discussed in the merged forum. Reading books, watching TV and movies, and listening to music doesn't require the same human interaction as video games, so they'd probably be better to merge (if anyone revamps anything at all). -
I'm most excited for a couple of concerts and local shows this year. The one that tops the list is the AFI concert on February 2nd, which is sort of something I've been waiting for since I first heard them in 2003. I'm not sure if this is before or after my school's Battle of the Bands, which was amazing last year and I'm expecting it to be just as amazing this year. The last planned concert I'm going to is Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which will probably happen sometime in November, which is becoming a tradition between my father and I. Speaking of TSO, their next album "Nightcastle" is supposed to becoming out sometime this year. Of course, they said 2006 when I saw them in 2005, and they said 2007 when I saw them last year, so I don't know for sure. I really want this album mainly for their version of "Carmina Burana," but I'm sure it will have other great tracks as well. I think Rasputina's new album is coming out this year, too, so I'm going to have to save up for that.

I don't really consider what I do in my free time to be hobbies, because most of my free time is spent on the computer, talking to my friends or cycling between here, myspace, and Livejournal. I've been slowly teaching myself guitar over the past six years, and I suppose I'm pretty good for having such an unqualified teacher. I write music using Power Tab Editor, and I occasionally write lyrics. At the moment I'm trying to get a band together, because it's been one of my goals for a long time. I'm constantly listening to music as well. 2. What do you think your best personality trait would be? My sense of humor, probably. I'm definitely not funny to the majority of people I try to make laugh, but I have a few friends who have died laughing at me in the past. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I think I'm overly sensitive to other people's feelings. I can't be mean or make fun of anyone, even if they're doing so to me. I can't really stand up for myself. I always try to cheer my friends up without lingering on their reason for being upset.

Let's Abolish Profanity in Adventure Square/Reform thread
Okay, obviously I didn't see her point. :animeshy: I thought she was referring to consolidation and the [Game] & [Story] tags, instead of adding a PG-13 type of rating to the mix. Perhaps I should just call it a night now, haha. ~Dagger~
Actually, I didn't know that the movie was out before the PG-13 rating was created, but I guess the example works either way. Since I'm not very organized, I can't really offer any new ideas as to what should be done, though reading some of the earlier posts it seems that adding a new rating might help clear some of the M's out of the Arena. As for what would happen to the literature discussions if the forum gets revamped, they could possibly fit in Music, Movies & TV. The forum is already a little on the slow side, and there doesn't seem to be much conversation about literature at the moment. I don't think it would be too much of a problem (for the mods, at least, I don't know how much work revamping would be for the technical staff and admins). Maybe MM&TV could be slightly changed into a kind of Media forum? (My first title was "uninteractive entertainment", but I think that one is a little more user-friendly). -

Personally, implementing a swear filter there really wouldn't affect me at all. I really like Shy's idea to redo the forums there to better fit the situation. To add on to the argument about ratings, I'll take two PG rated movies; Disney's Lilo and Stitch and Mel Brooks' Spaceballs. Now, I'm not entirely sure why Lilo and Stitch was even rated PG to begin with (the back of the box said something like "frantic space violence" or something like that), but it seems to me that Spaceballs is just a little bit more mature than that. There's definitely a lot of humor that would pass right over the heads of younger viewers, as well as suggestive content such as
the place Dark Helmet and what's-his-face (I'm having trouble remembering his name at the moment) have to hold in order to use the Schwartz
. I remember an 'eff' word and some other profanities that usually get blanked out on regular television, too. It seems like 'PG' is a gigantic pool that holds cute little cartoon characters, happy messages, adult humor, and foul language without clarifying which is appropriate for what audience. -
I just recently heard Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Landslide," originally written by Stevie Nicks and performed by Fleetwood Mac (I think). I've only heard the Dixie Chicks' cover and my semantics teacher playing it on guitar, but I'm pretty positive this is my absolute favorite version of the song. I just wish I had heard this cover first, because it's just stuck as a country song in my mind.

2006 was pretty good for me. It's been the most drama-tastic year so far, both in theatre and tension. I had a couple of small roles in a high school play in March, I was Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie this summer, and I was Veruca Salt's understudy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in October. I also switched from the high school I attended last year to the all my friends go to, which was the greatest thing that could've happened to me. There were a few low points, namely after the musical was over and when school started again. Regardless, I'm sort of sad that 2006 is over. Today is also my OB birthday. I've actually been here longer than a year, but under a different account.

The hardest tests ever were given back in Ming China as government examinations. People who took the exams had to take bedding, food, water, testing supplies, and even a portable toilet to the compound with them, because they weren't allowed to leave their cubicles until they finished the exam. Not only was the test brutally long, it was both mentally and physically exhausting. People even died, but that didn't interrupt testing. The bodies were just thrown over the compound walls and left alone. Gah, AP world history is a monster! Speaking of AP world, the semester exam for that class was kind of hard. I guessed on most of the forty questions, and there were two or three full-length essays to write after the multiple choice part. I didn't quite finish the second essay, which had something to do with similarities and differences between trade endeavors in Africa and Europe, or something like that. I'm not really worried about it, though, I'll still pass the course even if I got a D on the exam. Algebra tests in general are really hard for me, and Chemistry is no easy subject, either. It would probably help if I actually STUDIED, though. The only cramming I did for AP world happened literally twenty minutes before I took the test.

Aw, thank you both! I love to get comments from people who aren't friends or family; especially nice ones. :] Actually, these weren't actually inspired by AFI (is that a shock, or what?) I think I was constantly listening to Placebo when I wrote these, which played a little part in why some of the rhythms seem weird. I do have one recently written song, but I don't think I like it very much anymore. I wrote the lyrics, then I started working on the actually music part...and suddenly the words didn't work anymore. I never really finished the song, either. The midi version of the intro is located at this myspace, though. http://www.myspace.com/thirtysevenam

How do you feel about cover songs? Covers can be great if done properly. I love the Iron and Wine version of "Such Great Heights," and there's a String Quartet tribute to AFI that's very nice. On the AFI front, though, there's one CD full of AFI covers that are completely horrible. I understand that the point of covering a song is to remake it in a different style, creating new twists for it, but that album is just too too bad. I haven't heard the full songs, though, so maybe my distaste shouldn't just be based on thirty second samples. One of my favorite covers is AFI's version of "Jack the Ripper," originally by Morrissey. I also like The Pixies' "Where Is My Mind" by Placebo. Rasputina has several amazing covers as well. One of their EPs, the Lost and Found, is made up of only cover songs. They've done a range of different songs, from Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" to Marilyn Manson's "Tourniquet" to Melanie's "Brand New Key" (I couldn't remember the original artist at first). Finally, if you could have any band cover any song, who would you pick to do what song, and why? I would LOVE to hear AFI cover "Zero" by Smashing Pumpkins. It has a very AFI-like sound to it, and I think it would be amazing for them to perform it. I wonder if there's some kind of AFI Obsessors Anonymous...?

I can't have a tattoo since I'm not 18, but I'm not really sure if I want one or not. I have mixed feelings on the idea of putting something in my skin that will be there for the rest of my life. When I look at pictures of other peoples' tattoos, though, I get excited and think I do want one. If I ever got one, though, I think it would probably be something AFI-related in an obscure place, like some lyrics or artwork on my back. I'm not very original when it comes to designs, I guess. I plan on going into acting as a career, though, so I'm not sure if ever getting a tattoo would be a good idea.

I borrowed this game from my friend a couple of days ago, and I must say I'm addicted to it. There's something about being able to stuff kids in trash cans that's very appealing. I haven't been paying too much attention to the actually storyline because it's been too much fun just beating the crap out of whoever I feel like. I read that people were highly against this game, however, and that it ALMOST got banned in my state. I'm really glad it didn't, though, because it's sucking up time that would've been otherwise spent whining about how Christmas is taking forever to get here. Personally, I like to run around and find conflicts happening between bullies and nerds. When I see one of those green sweatered kids getting picked on, I'll pull the bully off and rough him up a bit, or maybe stuff him into a locker. Once I saw a bully stuff someone in a locker, and I let the kid out and put the bully in there instead. I love to taunt the prefects and even beat them up, because it's easy to escape from them and hide in a garbage can. Who else likes Bully, then?

I'm suddenly in love with "Samson" by Regina Spektor. I adore some of the lyrics; You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first, I loved you first Oh we couldn't bring the columns down Yeah, we couldn't destroy a single one and the history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us not even once. I wish I had written those lines before she did. It's a very pretty, very sad song.

Welcome to Otakuboards, Linkinpark27. Please try to improve your post quality. We encourage using good grammar, spelling, and punctuation here (basic English class stuff, and not internet speak like "ur" and "ppl." ) I'm going to leave the thread open for discussion. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or any other moderator, and be sure to check out the Rules. Enjoy your stay here! Personally, I find Christmas music to be a little bit annoying. A few radio stations are playing nothing but Christmas music until December 26-ish, and it seems they only have about five to choose from. I heard that Mariah Carey song twice in under thirty minutes on the exact same station yesterday. That's not to say I don't like Christmas music, though. Some of it can be really nice, such as Little Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells, and a lot of carols. I really like the music from the Polar Express; last year, the chorus I was in performed a medley from it, and it was a lot of fun. However, absolutely NOTHING can be compared to Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They've remade a lot of Christmas songs into metal masterpieces, such as Carol of the Bells and O Holy Night. Whenever I mention them to someone, though, they have no idea what I'm talking about until I mention the beer commercial featuring the house with the flashing Christmas lights playing Wizards in Winter, one of their greatest original songs.
-
I don't think they're celebrities, but when I went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert in November, they sat out after the show and gave autographs and stuff. I shook several hands (Anna Phoebe, the violinist, is the only one I remember) and got my Ticketmaster paper signed by everyone who was there. Angus Clark, one of the guitarists, commented on my shirt ("AFI is a good band!") and gave me a guitar pick, which I use every time I play.
1 ? Have you ever broken a bone? If so how? If not what was the next worse thing that happened to you? 2 ? What do you think of pets and do you have one? 3 ? If you were given several million dollars, what would you do with it?
1. I've never officially broken a bone. I THOUGHT I broke my left pinky finger twice; once in seventh grade when a basketball bent it all the way back, and once in eighth grade when I slammed it in the dryer and bent it again. Both times it swelled up to a size larger than my thumb and turned a sickening shade of bluish yellow. 2. I love pets, especially cats. My first pet was Goldy, who's now a 10 year old goldish American short hair. I used to love dogs more than cats, though, and the next pet was a springer spaniel mixed breed named Chipper. A couple of days ago, a kitten adopted herself into my family, and we decided to keep her. Her name's Charlotte, and she's white with grey spots. 3. I would go into Sam Ash and buy numerous amps, a bass guitar, new guitars, lots of spare strings, both a regular and electronic drumset, a vocoder, some keyboards, recording gear, and a cello. Since I'd probably have money left, I'd go to FYE and buy every AFI, Rasputina, Misfits, and Placebo CD they had, and probably a few movies. Assuming I'd STILL have money left, I'd probably get a laptop, and maybe even a car. --- 1. Do you play an instrument? If so, what, and if not, do you want to? 2. Pick three favorite movies and explain why. 3. Who do you think is the most attractive person ever?

AFI - Decemberunderground AFI has been my favorite band of all time for four years, and I love everything they put out. This album is extremely different from some of their earlier works, such as Black Sails in the Sunset and Art of Drowning which have more of a dark hardcore punk sound. DU utilizes electronic beats and synthesizers, somewhat akin to AFI's previously release, Sing the Sorrow. The band remains rooted in their darker lyrics, however, and the music is more than just plain amazing. However, if you've only heard Miss Murder, don't be turned off to the whole album. I don't think it's a very good representation of all AFI did this year, as it's probably the simplest and most radio-friendly song on the CD. My Favorite Songs: Kiss and Control, Endlessly She Said, Love Like Winter, The Interview (I adore all of the twelve tracks, but I decided to not be overzealous). AFI - I Heard a Voice (DVD) This just came out on the 12th of December, and it's AFI's first ever DVD. It was shot with over twenty cameras at their largest concert ever in Long Beach, CA. It's a great opportunity for people who haven't had the chance to see this band live to find out what all happens at one of their shows. I almost teared up several times during the performance (but managed to remain dry-eyed in a car full of family members)...so when I go to their concert in February I'll probably lose my mind completely. My favorite parts of this DVD would have to be the beginning, of course, because the excitement just builds as Prelude 12/21 slowly comes in, the band comes on stage and plays, then they go right into Girls Not Grey. Some more highlights include Nick 13 of Tiger Army providing guest vocals in a nostalgic performance of A Single Second, the emotional power in This Time Imperfect, Death of Seasons, and Silver and Cold, and Love Like Winter (which is just a great song to begin with). Also included on the DVD are interviews with members of the Despair Faction, as well as four creepy videos from the mystery AFI is running. It's also a really pretty package, and the disk has black ink on black. It's fun to look at, as well as watch over and over again. Unfortunately, I haven't been listening to any bands who have released any CDs this year, so I'll just spread my AFI obsession all over. EDIT: v - BANZORZED.

It's not much, but I did something. I was planning on making one with my cat, but I ended up not. Maybe I'll still do it. EDIT - The image only shows up for me when I preview the post, not when I view the regular thread...if that's the case for anyone else, here's the link.

If dead trees count as inanimate objects, they might have to be my favorite. I love how desolate and cold they look, all thin and barren. AFI may have had something to do with this, but I really love winter imagery like that. There's a huge dead tree on the back of the US Connecticut quarter, and when I had one I didn't want to spend it. I also really like fallen leaves, jackolanterns, and Christmas lights, 'cos they make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I can't really think of any other time I'd rather live in than now. My AP world history class is probably responsible for this; I've learned a lot about how poorly women were treated in a lot of cultures for a really long time. Also, I love technology a bit too much, and I don't think I'd be willing to give it all up just for a chance to live in a different era. If I could live during a time without worrying about my rights or not having technology, though, I'd probably have to say the Victorian Era. Something about that has always intrigued me...most likely the fact that it inspiried gothic music and fashion. Actually, a thought just popped into my head. I absolutely adore around 1900-1950, for the clothes, music, films, and general awesomeness during those times. I think the musicals Annie and Chicago have probably shaped that interest, being set around the 20's and 30's. I also think it would be pretty cool to be around when Wizard of Oz first came out in 1939... ...but watching it on DVD is a little bit more appealing. =/ The 80's seem sort of fun, too. There were some really good goth bands then, such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and Sisters of Mercy. Some of my favorite movies (Clue, Labyrinth, the Princess Bride) were made in the 80's, too.
