I found myself saying this to a colleague of mine. For some reason he didn't think it was as funny and nostalgic as I did. Thanks, Gavin. Thanks.

Boo, I think I need some marketing advice from you. :P
My career has been all over the place. I studied graphic design at University (while I was still active on OB years ago), but I ended up moving into the health industry (weirdly enough).
I got to a fairly senior point in that industry, and then I finally made a move I'd been wanting to do for ages; now I work in a software company, and I'm actually involved in software design (mostly business analysis and user experience).

Career path update: I got that agency job! I'm a designer at a small studio in Madison, Wisconsin now.
Dessert situation: apparently on Wednesdays everyone goes and gets really good malts, so I'd peg it at "agreeable".

I actually agree with much of what you're saying James. I get your perspective.

I wasn't really trying to debate here, but my point was just that God, if He is as Christianity says He is, will never be proven. Never; because in doing so would also be to tear down a lot of the core beliefs of Christianity at the same time. Either God doesn't exist, or He does and He can't be proven. That's how I see it, and I can't see how it could work that he ever could be proven. Not because it's too "difficult" to prove Him, but because of the repercussions of proving Him.

Again, I'm not speaking for all religions with this statement.

I can see how you'd think this is just a "scapegoat" philosophy - it's only a way for people to convince themselves of what they believe in. I'm not really going to be able to change that here, but I'm just saying people aren't trying to prove God because those who believe in Him also believe He's not something that can be proven on a universal basis.

    2. You may double post in this forum if you wish to add extra content to your work. If you reach the character limit within your post, you are welcome to double post. 3. If you are a very regular writer who creates lots of threads, we’d recommend that you limit your work to one thread, so that you don’t clutter up the forum with several threads at once. In the same way, if your story has multiple chapters, keep it in one thread.

Don't mind me, by the by, I was just being absurd.  It was just a very abrupt change, is all.
I do very much like how it automatically separates the unread posts from the previously viewed posts with that little blue line.  That's clever, and a lot cleaner than one might expect.
I would like the full size avatar back, though.  The porthole image is nice and clean and modern and chic, but I'd rather have the full monty, as it were.
Oh, and is there a straight WSYWIG post creator/editor mode, or do we just have the current postbox as is?  I noticed the new super-/subscript buttons and I like muery much but the thought does go tickly in the back of my brain bucket.
Look forward to seeing what the rest of it can do.

Fair enough. I think that the result (from what I've seen) is better overall. The gain is a much improved functionality I think.
Also, I know this is just the generic default skin...but I think it's better than the ones we had. We didn't have an in-house designed skin since v7.
Even with the tasks left to go, you've done a good job Petie. I don't know how much easier the upgrade process is these days, but I remember that it used to take a long time and there was a lot to clean up manually.

This question may be an exercise in nothing other than fantasy, but I thought I'd ask it anyway: do you guys (those of you who still browse and post) think that there's any chance of growing OB again?

I ask this question because even after all this time, it amazes me that there are still people who post and lurk here. In fact, I'm kind of amazed that OB is even still online. Considering the earliest version started circa-1998, that would make the community a whopping 16 years old!

That almost makes this place truly archaeological in Internet terms!

Clearly, we still have a huge history of great content on here (everything from Graphic Worm to our RPGs). It's great to preserve that, but is there anything we can do to build the site up again?

Bulletin boards seem to be a dying breed - or at least, that's what I first thought, except that there are still some great bulletin boards out there.

    What do you guys think?

    Hey kuji. ;-)

I think we were all very different. Things used to seem so much bigger - and I guess they were at one stage! I remember when I'd log into OB each day and find dozens (and, at times, well over a hundred) new posts across the forums. It really did feel like OB was a big community, but not as painfully big as a 4chan or something like that.

As it is, I never really got into message boards much after OB. I post occasionally on AppleInsider, but that's about it. I used to post on Steam User Forums, but now the Half-Life area has died down so much that I don't really bother anymore.

OB was really the only place that had that really unique mix of topics (everything from political debate to video games to RPGs). :)

It's good to see some people still around. Although, there are a few people who just disappeared and I've always wondered what happened to them...

I think that trains are generally a good idea. Here in Australia, there has been a big push for a long time to build a high-speed rail line that would run along the east coast, from Melbourne to Brisbane. Apparently the flight corridor between Melbourne and Sydney is the busiest in the world; I can believe that. We have large numbers of people who need to travel between cities, but our continent is very large, and our major cities are very far from each other.

The problem has been that building a high-speed rail of that scale in Australia is astronomically expensive. So, that has really restricted governments in the past...who knows what will happen in the future.

But I don't think trains can outright replace aircraft, at least for a lot of things (especially overseas travel). But in cases where you're doing, say, only a one hour flight somewhere...then a high-speed train might be a better choice.

I also have some hope for the really advanced planes that various groups are researching at the moment. There's a plane concept (I forget the name), which involves very high-altitude flight and would apparently result in a Sydney to London flight of something like 4-6 hours (versus... maybe 24 hours at the moment!)

I think those are the kinds of technologies we should look at (unless someone invents teleportation...) ^_^

    [kuja]
I can't help watching the news on the latest Gaza conflict, man it's so heartbreaking. Hundreds of dead Palestinians, dozens of dead Israelis. Peace looks like a pipe dream at this point.
It's a tragedy that affects both sides, but you can clearly see that Gaza has paid a much higher price for this war. I think it's something like 80% dead in the Gaza strip were civilians who are counted as "collateral damage" and  all the Israeli casualties have been soldiers, occurring after the ground invasion into, and happening in, Gaza.

Do you think Israel is right to do this? Do you you think it has gone too far to defend itself?
I honestly think this  has gone way beyond self defense.  With the Israeli missile defense dome, It's kinda like the big kid, who can keep is attacker at arms length, but can't resist dishing out an absolute walloping at the same time. :/

    What can end this conflict?
Do you think that ending the Israeli occupation of Gaza, allow the Palestinians to leave, import food and medicines more freely than they can do at present, and engage in world commerce might go some way toward it? That's my thinking. Allow the Palestinian people to live freely, have a land to call home, and they might not be so desperate that it's leadership would attack the Israelis, foolishly, as a zebra poking a lion with a stick.

I am fairly certain my last post here was some kind of "omg, it's been so long!!1" type of deal, and now a few years later here I am again, haha. :) It's awesome to see some names I recognise--Shy, SaiyanPrincessX, James; glad to see you are all doing well. Speaking of the old guard, I can see it's PiroMunkie's birthday as I type this, so Happy Birthday if you ever read this, old chum.

So what am I doing, like, right now? Well, I can tell you I've just been on a massive nostalgia trip trawling through what used to be the Roleplaying & Storytelling forum--So many of our old threads and games are still there, frozen in time, it's surreal. Feels like I'm walking through the empty halls of my old high school or something. (By god, I wish we had finished Maverick Hunters: Personification!)

I won't bore you with the gory details of my sordid past so here's the synopsis--worked for the tax department, got fired for being a daydreamer who did no work and spent all my time writing stories, survived an earthquake, survived another much worse earthquake, got a graphic design qualification, met my long-term girlfriend of four years, got a design job with a big media company, moved around the country, survived ANOTHER earthquake....

And now most recently, my partner and I have moved back to our home city of Christchurch, and have just bought a house together! It's a pretty grown-up thing but I am still very much just a big kid--still playing way too many video games, still watching cartoons and anime (although I just watched Eva Rebuild 3.0!), still getting lost in my own imagination writing short stories and drawing maps and pictures that no-one else is ever likely to see, hehe.

To any other oldies who might stumble across this at some point in the future--Rahia, Rico, TN, Seph, Warwick, Neil, and the many others I've no doubt forgotten... I miss you guys, and I hope you are all doing well.
