Plus... what's wrong with comedy?[/color']
Yeah, seriously. Just because a show plays for laughs a majority of the time doesn't mean that it has no inherent value... hell, I'd say that being honestly funny to watch immediately gives a show tons of value. Lots of the sharpest, most intelligent animated shows have been comedies: The Simpsons, Futurama (my favorite animated series), South Park, Family Guy, Rocko's Modern Life, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Daria, and so on and so forth. There's hardly a shortage of smart American animated comedies, much less shows in other genres lol.
i think that anyonw who calls anime and manga otakus losers are just self-absorbed,crazy, good-for-nothing-worthless,insolent, preppy scondrells(and/or refs) that think only their crap is worth anything and they need to shove all their rude unwanted remarks far, far up their anal canal!
Um, free country? If they call you that, so what. Who cares? Let them think what they want to think. I don't care much for anime. I think whomever is obsessed, and I mean really obsessed about anime are losers. I mean, get a life? There is far more to life than anime....that includes anything really. I'm not just beating up on anime otakus. Just using them as an example to disprove your point. Am I preppy? No. I think that anything to an extreme can be lame.

You calling them preppy scondrells is just as bad as people calling you a loser. So, don't lecture anyone, kay?
I'm going to go ahead and say sorry in case this response hurts your feelings! But really why do you care what they think of you or your hobbies? Get over it, it's life people will always judge you by how you act, look, and who you hang out with. If you don't like the way the talk about you because of the simple fact that you have a " loser" hobbie, stay the HE** away from them.[/COLOR']
I appreciate your honest opinions. :catgirl: Yeah, the only thing matter is what we love. Let's face it every where you go there will always be someone who judge you in some ways, but so what? As long as I like them nothing matters! :)

Unfortunately I think some people here have missed the point Charles was making. :animesigh

If someone makes fun of your hobbies and interests what should it matter to you. That is their opinion and they can have it. Just like you have your opinion on what you enjoy. If someone calls me an otaku, I just agree with them. I don't see that as an insult, I see it as my nerdy badge of honor. Heck yeah I'm an otaku! So what?!

Not everyone is going to think that anime is great. When they say something negative about it and a fan flies off the handle and becomes upset it just gives more power to those who say the negative stuff. They will say: "See how an anime fan acts, that is why they are so lame." All you do is give them entertainment (they probably just want a rise out of you) and verify what they already believe to be true.

No matter what your hobby is someone is going to think it is stupid. Watching professional sports, sewing, dog shows, cooking, gardening, collecting stuff....someone somewhere thinks it's dorky. So what. Do what you like, why should their opinion hold any merit when you are the one enjoying it.

Panda, you are fantastic.
Charles, I shortened the quote. Having a quote so ridiculously long compared to the main part of your post makes the boards messy and a pain to read. Just quote the part you need to. -r2
Oh r2, I'm so so so very sorry. I hadn't realized that I had quoted such a ridiculously long three paragraph post. Thank you for sweeping in and responding to this problem before it got out of hand. I definitely don't want to make a habit out of this reckless behavior. I in no way want to make users sift through posts of such unparalleled magnitude. I am eternally thankful for your extremely useful guidance.

Here's a tip for you. You may want to private message users when you make edits to their posts. Otherwise, there's the chance they may not re-enter the thread and see your valuable instruction. But then again, geez, what would I know.
Meh is that insult :animeangr I challenge you to a duel. LOL jk. Well aren't first impresions what make a person a loser/w/e else you are? I mean appearences make a big difference in what people think of you. If you knew everone in the world very well would you think of alot of them as losers? Not likely.
Well, that is true. But I guess I didn't make my point out completely. What I was trying to say was that people who aren't into anime/manga and sees these people who are gets this off bases thought on how everyone who likes it are losers.
It is the "image" other people set that sometimes sets off a kind of thought on everyone else.

I wonder if that makes sense... :animestun

I don't see why it's so hard to understand why people don't like anime. It's all in a matter of taste and / or preferences. Some people probably grew up not liking cartoons..... (it's possible) Other's probably grew out of it or got bored of it. Like Panda said. Everyone is not going to like anime.

In my opinion, let them say what they want beacuse at the end of the day if you enjoy anime and manga like I do and many others then thats all that matters...ignore those idiots who try to belittle you. what your interests are make you, you!! If they want to watch silly cartoons let them...you'll find plenty of people who have the same interests as you and want to be your friend. the way I see it...some people just dont want to embrace new cultures :haha:
and for the record I like pokemon and I shall ignore your flames >3

Comic books own!!!!!!! your a loser in my book for saying that :animeangr :animesigh Ok now to answer in a reasonable state of mind. Most people think "a hyperactive klutzy moron" is a loser. Oh and you like anime?Icing the cake. But whats wrong with beaing a loser? In the words of the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails "Im not concerned with fitting into the world" "Your world that is!" Lastly the only thing worse than a loser is a loser in denial.

Agreed. Slightly...

Yes. American Comic books and animation are the original inspiration for manga/anime in the first place, so it would not make you seem all the wiser by saying such things. There are several american comic book series/graphic novels which often times, surpass the depth of manga. Examples: Sandman, The Watchmen, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City (and basically everything by Frank Miller), Green Arrow, Ultimate X-Men/Spider-Man/Avengers, V For Vendetta, John Constantine: Hellblazer, and etc.

I agree that it is reasonable for people to not like anime/manga. But I agree also that it's not other's place to ridicule a fan of it. I don't make fun of my girlfriend for liking Laguna Beach (well, actually I do) just like I wouldn't make fun of a person who enjoys watching football. So there really is no reason for a person to insult or other wise ridicule another for their fandom of a particular thing.

I again, quote myself to say that you just gotta shrug off any nay-sayers, and if they persist, then you could do what I do. Agree with them in what their saying (because I will be the first person to admit that I am a nerd) and tell them to piss off. It's not like their better than you anyways, so I don't see why you would have a reason to let them get a rise out of you. *insert middle finger* and be on with your life.

I agree on that.To tell the truth I have been watching anime for 7 years now.And I have gotten over the fact that not everyone is going to like it.And that people tell me to grow up.:animeangr Anime does have some good lessons to learn and the art is very beautiful. So if you like anime then keep watching it or reading it.And don't worry about anyone else. Can't please everyone.Heck I still like Yu-Gi-Oh ;) lol

A number of people are taking things in this thread way to personally. If you can?t discuss your views on this without insulting other members then don?t post. Since a good number of posts have already had to be removed, further flaming will result in the thread being shut down for good.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. If you want people to respect your point of view do them the courtesy of also respecting their views. So lets keep this civilized people. Thank you. ~indifference

At the end of the day it all comes back to the same simple fact, most any anime fan your going to meet is generally a dork. It's a stereotype, and it's not something that's going to go away. And it's not even that off on the true scale. A good chunk of anime fans are nerdy, out of shape, and lacking in any true social skills. I know because not only am I one, but I spend almost all my time with other anime otakus. We spend all our time talking about anime and manga.

That's not to say this is the only way you see anime fans. I have recently started to kick myself into shape and I even enlisted in the army, proving that not all amime fans are losers and geeks. There is that percentage that are, but you get that in almost anything, so it's easy to over look. For the most part you'll see the reason comic fans, gamers, and anime fans all seem to catch crap from everyone else has most to do with the fact of poor preconcieved notions that animation of all kinds is for children. I don't know about you guys, but I would never let a child watch something like "Elfen Lied" or read a comic like "The Watchmen".

In all honesty, most modern animation is begining to gear toward an older crowd and in japan it has already started securing prime time slots on major networks. It may take a few years, but I'm starting to see a similar movement here in the US. It's just a matter of time and soon anime fans will become the majority. It's already starting to happen. I've converted many friends to the anime ways and they have never gone back.

In short, we're not all nerds and losers, though some honestly are, and they know who they are. But soon we will rise beyond this lowly station to a much highed and largely excepted station.

The Nerds Shall Rise To Glory!

I think with a topic like this you're really just preaching to the choir here. Pretty much everyone here has the same opinion on the topic, but regardless if someone thinks anime/manga is stupid just tell them to F off. heh, thats what i do anyway, but maybe in a perfect world everyone would be completely accepting of all different views, opinions, etc. but we don't live in a perfect world so theres always gonna be someone who doesn't like something about you, or something you like or whatever, so the best way to deal with it is to just ignore it, suck it up and drive on. And don't let the opinions of others discourage you from doing something you love.

yeah! U don't know what u r saying!

Anyway, at my school (now, mind you, I've been here 2 months) everyone seems to get along, regardless of what they're into. The otaku slide right in with the goths and the juggalos like one big happy family. Unlike my old school where everyone hated people from other groups. I have noticed bitter relations between some groups though... perhaps otaku is a subdivision of the subdivisions here.

On Topic: Personally I could care less if some one were to tell me I was a loser for liking Anime and Manga. The truth is that whether it?s sports, classical music or any other thing you enjoy, there will always be people out there who think you are a loser for what you like. So I see no reason to get upset. Rather I think it?s sad since they don?t know what they are missing.
